How to install a thermostat from a Lada Granta car to a VAZ-2110

VAZ cars of different models differ in the operating principles of many systems. There is a difference in the engine cooling and interior heating systems.

The article describes how to install a Granta thermostat on a VAZ-2110.

The main differences between the engine heating systems of the two models will be described, as well as the best thermostats that can be used for replacement.

Why is a thermostat needed?

Its basis is a heat-sensitive element that is immersed in coolant. Under the influence of temperature, deformation of the bimetallic plate occurs. As a result, the valve opens and the fluid flow in the system changes direction. In fact, a VAZ-2110 thermostat is needed for one purpose - supplying hot liquid to the cooling radiator.

On older cars, the thermostat was connected to the engine block using a short rubber pipe. In newer versions, the device is secured using two studs. Between the engine block and the thermostat there is only a paronite gasket, which can be treated with silicone sealant. But this procedure is not always necessary. The outputs are connected to the pipes going to the stove, expansion tank and radiator.

Modification of the thermostat

On a VAZ 2110, it is quite possible to modify the thermostat by adding another hole to the 5-hole device. Why is this needed and what does it give?

  • In cars, in particular on the VAZ 2110, the injector becomes warmer with the advent of the sixth fitting due to the fact that the bypass channel decreases. For reference: a bypass is a pump for circulating liquid in a parallel pipeline;
  • For the stove to operate, it is necessary for the coolant to circulate in a small circle. This happens through the bypass channel. The smaller its diameter, the more liquid will flow through the stove;
  • An additional fitting, as a rule, prevents the heater return tee from leaking, since such malfunctions are not uncommon on “tens”.

An additional 8 mm hole is drilled in the body of the vehicle (thermostat). Install an additional pipe parallel to the same one going to the stove. It is needed so that the “waste” liquid from the heater enters the thermostat cavity, and there is no overcooling of the engine.

You also need a throttle washer - to increase the flow of fluid through the stove if the small circle is open, and an adjusting bolt resting on the leg of the element in order to regulate the opening temperature of the vehicle from the outside.

By the way, having modified it in this way, you can turn the carburetor TS 82, by drilling and tapping, into an injector suitable for the VAZ 2110.

How does a thermostat work? VAZ-2110

If we consider all types of devices, we can distinguish two main components - a sealed housing and a valve on a temperature-sensitive element. But there is a slight difference. With a carburetor power system, a non-separable thermostat (VAZ-2110) is used. The injector allows you to disassemble the structure and replace only the failed elements.

Of course, the second option is much better, since the cost of individual elements is much less. But in some cases, the VAZ-2110 thermostat valve (for injection engines) can also have a high cost - everything directly depends on the manufacturer. Preference should be given to companies that supply AvtoVAZ conveyors. Remember one thing: AvtoVAZ produces cars, not spare parts. Therefore, when you see a product on which an automaker is listed as the manufacturer, think about the quality of the product. It's hardly worthy.

How to replace a VAZ-2112 thermostat with 16 valves yourself

The main purpose of the thermostat is to control the heating of the 16-valve engine, which is installed in the VAZ-2112 car. The design of the thermostat includes a valve containing a special substance. As soon as the VAZ-2112 begins to heat up, the valve opens and liquid enters a large circle to cool the 16-valve engine.

If the coolant does not flow into a large circle, the car will overheat, which can lead to serious consequences. To avoid this, you should constantly monitor the technical condition of the machine; replacing a broken thermostat should be done in a timely manner.

How to remove an old-style thermostat?

In this case, everything is simple, the main thing is to let the engine cool. You will have to drain the liquid from the system, and it is at a very high temperature, so it can cause severe burns. When the temperature drops to 40-50 degrees, you can begin to drain the liquid. For this purpose, there are two holes - in the lower part of the radiator and in the cooling jacket of the internal combustion engine.

There is a plug in the first hole; it must be unscrewed by hand. If that doesn't work, you can use pliers. A bronze plug is screwed into the engine block. It is most convenient to unscrew it with a 13mm socket wrench. After draining the liquid (do not forget to unscrew the cap on the tank), you can remove the thermostat on the VAZ-2110. It is enough to loosen all the clamps that secure the pipes to it.

Installation of a modified vehicle

On a VAZ 2110 you can easily install a more advanced thermostat from Granta 2190. But you should still know a little about the design of the heating/cooling system in Granta. Its scheme can be easily implemented on the “ten”.

  • Original TS Grants 2190 from BEHR;
  • The lower radiator hose is from Granta, but the upper one 21214 will also work, or simply matched to size;
  • Tee from VAZ 2110 for the cooling system;
  • The studs are 8 mm in length - like from the camshaft bed;
  • Straight long stove pipe from the “ten”;
  • Gasket for thermostat.

We act according to this plan:

  1. We change the lower radiator pipe to the one from Granta (or similar). You can leave the original one, but connect it to a suitable diameter at a right angle using a piece of pipe. However, remember - the more connections, the more opportunities for leaks;
  2. We connect the expansion tank pipe through a VAZ 2110 tee: one end goes to the drain from the heater radiator, the other end goes to the supply pipe;
  3. Drain the coolant;
  4. We change the studs to longer ones and install the Granta thermostat;
  5. We twist the temperature sensor.

Next comes a check to see if the modified heating system is working properly. Typically, the Grant vehicle is more stable, provides faster heating of the air in the cabin, and is not subject to temperature fluctuations.

Removing a new sample element

If we draw an analogy with the previous guide, then you will need to perform almost the same steps. Drain all the liquid from the cooling system; for this purpose there are similar plugs in the block and radiator. The only difference is that not only will you have to remove the pipes, but you will also have to unscrew the two nuts that secure the thermostat (VAZ-2110 is the model in question) to the engine block. Just try not to damage the gasket. But if it is still torn (and this happens in almost 90% of cases), then be sure to install a new one during assembly.

Its cost is very low. And if you wish, you can even cut it out from paronite yourself (if you have one). To improve sealing, clean all adjacent surfaces. After this, degrease the metal and apply a thin layer of sealant to the gasket on both sides. When installing, it is necessary not to tighten the nuts to the end; give the sealant a little time to settle, then the connection will be more reliable. After 20-30 minutes you can tighten the nuts. It is recommended to fill the system with liquid after 1-2 hours.

Signs of a bad thermostat

If the thermostat on a VAZ-2110 is faulty, an increase in engine temperature will be observed. Unfortunately, if the sensing element breaks down, the valve switches to a position that corresponds to a small cooling circle. Consequently, liquid from the engine jacket does not enter the radiator. What to do in this case? Open the stove tap and turn on the fan at the highest speed. Even if it’s hot outside, this method should not be avoided - it will help save the engine from overheating.

Instruction No. 1

It often happens that the engine temperature does not rise to the optimal temperature during operation. For example, on the body of a thermostat device, 90 degrees is marked, and the temperature is not higher than 85. This problem can be solved with the help of a simple modification - modifying the rod. The fact is that in the process of opening the thermostat, the rod rests against the cover. If you expand the special recess in the lid, the thermostat will operate later. Therefore, it is easier to replace the rod with a bolt of the appropriate size.

  1. Pull the rod itself out of the cover.
  2. Drill a through hole at 4.5.
  3. Cut the internal thread to 5.
  4. Select the bolt length with a margin.
  5. Place a lock nut at 5 and a washer with an elastic band to seal.
  6. Reinstall the thermocouple.
  7. Fill with antifreeze.
  8. Check in practice, adjust the beginning of the opening of the large circle to 89 degrees.

Now the temperature will remain 90-92 degrees, as stated on the thermostat housing.

Stories from our readers

“Fucking basin. "

Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.

Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. You’ll laugh, but I work directly on the phone)) If If you want to change your life like me, then here’s what I advise you to do right now: 1. Register on the site 2. Practice on a Demo account (it’s free). 3. As soon as you get something on the Demo account, top up your REAL ACCOUNT and go to REAL MONEY! I also advise you to download the application to your phone, it’s much more convenient to work from your phone. Download here.

They are warmer not because a sixth fitting has appeared there, but because the bypass channel has been reduced. And the new fitting serves to get rid of the constantly leaking stove return tee.

Comparison of bypass channels of a 6-hole thermostat - 11mm (left) and 5-hole - 16mm (right)

What does bypass affect? Through the bypass channel, the coolant circulates in a small circle. And the smaller the diameter of the bypass channel, the more coolant flows through the heater. Because additional resistance is created when coolant flows in a small circle, bypassing the stove. That is, by reducing the diameter of the bypass you increase the flow through the stove, that is, the car interior will be warmer.

Reducing the bypass channel for a 5-hole thermostat:

I would like to note right away that when the bypass channel in a 5-hole thermostat (TC) is narrowed, problems may arise: Problems associated with washing the thermoelement . That is, if in a 6-hole thermocouple the bypass coolant and coolant of the outlet (cold) pipe of the stove are washed, then in a 5-hole thermocouple only the bypass coolant is washed.

In order to reduce the bypass to the required value, you can cut a plate out of an aluminum plate . The plate should fit exactly inside, as shown in the figure. Next, the plate needs to be secured ; for this you can use cold welding or rivets. Make sure that the rivets do not interfere with the closure of the small circle. Then we drill a new hole in the plate .

Reducing the bypass

One way to increase the efficiency of the thermostat is to reduce the bypass channel. This allows you to reduce the temperature of the liquid that passes through the thermostat, which means it will operate later. This approach allows you to speed up the heating of the stove radiator, which is actually the purpose of the modification.

In general, there are no particular difficulties when reducing the channel. This modification can be done in any garage with a minimum set of tools. The work is carried out in the following order:

  • We take a sheet of aluminum, a thickness of 1.5-2 mm
    . We cut out a plate of suitable size from it;
  • 5-6 mm
    hole in the plate , this is less than the standard for these thermostats;
  • Place the plate inside the thermostat and secure it. This can be done by riveting or cold welding.

This completes the hole reduction process. But, if you have a 6-hole thermostat installed, you will need to additionally connect the return from the stove to the thermostat. In this case, everything will work most correctly. As a result, you will get a warmer interior, as intended.

Thermostat design

Structurally, the “tens” thermostat consists of an aluminum housing with pipes for connecting hoses and a working mechanism (thermoelement) located inside. The latter is a brass or copper cylinder filled with wax with a built-in pusher - a pin, at the end of which there is a valve.

When the coolant is heated to a certain temperature (80-82 o C), the wax melts and expands, pushing this pin, which, in turn, moves the valve, opening it. As the wax cools, it hardens and shrinks in size, and the valve spring forces it back into the closed position.

What is a thermostat?

This is not a standard 6 "hole" thermostat

The thermostat itself is an important part in the engine cooling system. It is designed to ensure that the engine is cooled according to its needs.

For example, you started the engine “cold”, then at degrees from 80 to 90 a large circle opens and liquid enters the radiator and begins to cool the engine more intensively than in a small circle.

Thermostat operating principle

The thermostat itself consists of:

  1. Frame.
  2. Internal compartment.
  3. 2 pipes with valves.
  4. "Core". Thermoelement (copper powders, a mixture of granulated wax, graphite and aluminum in a special proportion).
  5. Valves.

How to identify a breakdown?

But there are also auxiliary signs: there is no heat in the cabin when it gets cold, a decrease in dynamic performance (power, speed), increased fuel consumption (about the passport consumption standards here).

Signs of a faulty thermostat

If your car's engine takes more than seven minutes to warm up to operating temperature, this is a sure sign that the thermostat valve is stuck open. In this case, the coolant will constantly move in a large circle. With such a malfunction in winter, the engine may not warm up even to 80 degrees.

If, on the contrary, the engine heats up very quickly and there is constant overheating, which can be determined by the readings of the temperature sensor and the frequent turning on of the radiator fan, this is a sure sign that the valve does not open and does not allow coolant into the radiator for cooling.

When should you change?

If you notice that the engine is heating up too quickly, while the coolant level is normal, then the first thing you might suspect is that the thermostat has stopped doing its job properly. In winter or simply cold weather, the opposite effect may occur - the car warms up slowly.

If the heater in your car is working, but the interior is still cold, it may be worthwhile to modify the thermostat. Details of the procedure are described here:

How to identify a malfunction

You can determine whether the VAZ-2110 thermostat needs to be replaced on your own.

To do this, start and warm up the car engine to operating temperature at idle speed. Next, in the engine compartment, find the radiator pipes. Touch them. If the device is working, they should both be hot. This is evidence that the coolant circulates freely in the system.

If one of them turns out to be cold, it means that the valve did not open and the thermostat did not work. But this does not mean that it needs to be changed immediately. For the VAZ-2110, replacement of the thermostat will be required only if its entire structure turns out to be unsuitable for further operation. In other cases, you can get by with repairing it.

Some important tips

Before replacing the element we are interested in, experts advise allowing the engine to cool completely after operation. And after the old thermostat has been removed, you should definitely check the new device for serviceability. This is done like this:

  • lower the thermostat into water heated to a temperature of about 80 degrees;
  • raise the water temperature by another 10 degrees (you need to stir the liquid);
  • observe the “behavior” of the new device: if you notice that the rod begins to extend from the silicone element, this means that the thermostat is operational.

And do not forget to pour liquid into the cooling system (into the reservoir) after finishing the work.

Removing the thermostat

To remove the device, you need to completely or partially drain the coolant. After this, it is necessary to dismantle the air filter housing and disconnect the hoses from the thermostat pipes. Next, you should unscrew the three bolts that secure the device body to the cylinder head.

When the unit is dismantled, unscrew the screws securing the thermostat cover and remove the thermocouple.

Checking the thermoelement

To check, we need a container of clean water, a liquid thermometer and a gas (electric) stove or boiler. To test the thermocouple for functionality, place it in a container of cold water and start heating it. When the liquid is heated to 80.5-82 o C for a working device, the pusher should move forward. If this does not happen, then replacing the thermostat for your VAZ-2110 is a necessity.

Additionally, inspect the device body and its pipes. If everything is in order with them, you can only get by by purchasing a thermoelement.

Functionality check

First of all, let’s not rush to remove the thermostat, because this requires a lot of fiddling. It may turn out that we are sinning against him in vain, but the issue is something else:

  1. Heat. We take hold of the lower radiator pipe and let someone start the engine. If there is no assistant, then start it yourself, you will have time to hold on to the hose. Please note that the car must be cold before this. At first the pipe is naturally cold, but when the engine is running it heats up very quickly. If this happens, it means that the thermostat is working properly, installing a new one is not required yet;
  2. Thermocouple. If doubts remain, you will have to disassemble. From the thermostat that has already been removed, it is necessary to remove the thermoelement - it is this element that is responsible for starting the cooler in a large circle, and it is this element that needs to be checked. This happens by lowering the thermoelement into fairly hot water (about 75'C) and then heating it. Naturally, you need to lower a thermometer into the water and monitor changes in temperature and the device itself. As it approaches 90°C, the thermoelement rod must extend. That did not happen? This means that this part needs to be changed. Most often, on a VAZ 2110, replacing the entire thermostat is not necessary - it is more expensive, and moreover, it is most often necessary only if some changes are detected in the “appearance” - such as a crack, chip, etc. ;
  3. Replacement. If we find problems or need to change the thermostat, we go to the car market or to the store where we buy a new one. Here, too, “pitfalls” may await us - the replacement will not bring the desired result if the new thermostat is, as they say, “flawed.” You need to blow hard into the fitting. If air does not pass anywhere, then the small circuit does not allow it to pass through, and its installation on a VAZ 2110 is possible.

Before replacing a broken thermostat, you need to remove it:

  1. Unscrew the cap from the expansion tank; this is necessary so that antifreeze flows normally out of the system;
  2. Remove the plug from the drain hole at the bottom of the radiator tank, first replace it with a clean container and drain the antifreeze;
  3. Remove the entire thermostat assembly. Or, if you prefer, just its thermocouple.

In the latter case:

  • Remove the hoses located on the thermostat cover pipes;
  • Remove the cover with the thermocouple. Now you can check it, as already described.

VAZ-2110: replacing the thermostat

After purchasing a new element, do not forget to check its serviceability using the method described above. Once you are sure it is working, install it in the housing and screw on the cover. The thermostat assembly can now be reinstalled.

To do this, secure it with three bolts to the cylinder head. Connect the cooling system pipes and fill the reservoir with antifreeze or antifreeze to the required level.

Start the engine and warm it up. Check the operation of the thermostat by touching the radiator pipes. If they are both hot, the device is working normally, and our work was not in vain.

Dismantling and replacement

Replacing the thermostat on a VAZ 2110 car will not be difficult, even without the help of specialists. You have checked its functionality and confirmed that it is faulty.

Removing the thermostat involves performing work in the following sequence:

  1. Take a screwdriver, an 8 key, a 6 hex key and other tools.
  2. Make sure the engine is cold. It is strictly prohibited to carry out work on a hot engine.
  3. Drain the coolant by unscrewing the plug.
  4. Remove the air filter.
  5. Locate the clamp on the radiator hose. Loosen it a little, you don't need to remove it completely.
  6. Disconnect the hose from the thermostat.
  7. Using the same method, disconnect the coolant pump hose.
  8. Using a 5mm wrench, unscrew the bolts that secure the thermostat. There are three of them on the VAZ 2110.
  9. Remove the thermostat cover.
  10. Remove the thermostat and rubber O-rings from the cover.

Installing a new component

Now let's figure out how to change the old thermostat from a VAZ 2110 to a new one.

As we have already noted, many craftsmen recommend using a thermostat from a VAZ 2111. It is more practical, more reliable, and more compact. Therefore, we offer recommendations for replacement with an eye to using just such a thermostat.

The installation process is not complicated, but it will require some care from you in performing each of the stages:

  1. First, cut a special tee into the supply hose from the stove. This is necessary because some thermostats have five fittings without access to the expansion tank. And we need six.
  2. Dismantle the distributor, which will make it easier to complete the following steps. But this is only relevant for a carburetor engine. In VAZ 2110 injection models, skip this step.
  3. Be sure to mark the position of the distributor relative to the body of the additional units to avoid mistakes during reassembly. Otherwise, you will disrupt the ignition and the engine will not start.
  4. Remove the tee from the cylinder head.
  5. Clean the mating plane head from traces of the old gasket.
  6. Get a new thermostat that fits your vehicle. Muffle the thin heating output using the throttle valve. You won't need it in the future.
  7. Unscrew the top pin and install a new, longer one in its place.
  8. Don't be alarmed, the new thermostat is shorter than the old one, the outlet and the pipe do not match. It's not scary. It is necessary to completely dismantle the pipe and put a new one in its place. An element from a VAZ 2112 is perfect. It is also advisable to find a new corner pipe.
  9. Install a new pipe, do not forget about the gasket.
  10. Shorten the elbow and screw it into place.
  11. Replace the standard heater hose with a new one that fits your thermostat.
  12. Connect the expansion tank, which is specially designed for this purpose, to the fitting.
  13. Check the quality of each connection so that you don’t have to do all the work again later.
  14. Fill with new coolant.
  15. Remove all air from the system.
  16. Warm up the engine until the fan comes on. To do this, it is necessary to warm up the power unit to approximately 85 degrees.
  17. If you don’t notice any traces of drops or leaks, it means you replaced the part correctly.

Whether it is difficult or not - decide for yourself. If such a procedure looks problematic for you, it is not recommended to take risks and change the thermostat yourself. Contact a trusted service station and make sure that the technicians use a high-quality new element of the engine cooling system.

To do this, every car owner is recommended to make good connections at trusted service stations. If you treat the craftsmen well, they will do a really high-quality repair. Don't forget how important human relationships are in solving many problems.
