Discs for Lada Granta - marking and replacement procedure

The main element of the wheel is the rim. It is designed to fix a car tire and attach the entire structure to the drive - transmitting torque from the engine and gearbox. Lada Granta wheels differ in production technology and materials used. The choice of wheels is determined by car enthusiasts based on the parameters of width, radius, and appearance.

What wheels were installed on different bodies and configurations?

In four different configurations of Lada Granta, the diameter of the wheels used ranges from 13 to 16 inches:

  • Standard - 5Jx13ET35, 5Jx14ET35, 6Jx14ET
  • Standard - 5Jx14ET35, 6Jx14ET
  • Lux – 5Jx15ET35, 6Jx15ET
  • Sport - 5Jx15ET35; in the sports package they also began installing wheels with a 16 radius and low-profile tires in size 195/50R

The first digital designation of these markings indicates the width of the rim in inches, the following indicators from 13 to 16 are the diameter of the disk, ET35 is the offset in mm.

The standard bolt pattern parameters are the same as those of old VAZ models - 4x98, that is, 4 holes, the centers of which are located along a circle with a diameter of 98 mm.

The diameter of the central hole according to the hub used is 58.6 mm. The most popular rim size among Lada Granta owners is considered to be R14, but many people prefer to drive on 15 rims.

Replacing disks on Grant

Before you start replacing wheels on your Lada Grant, you should prepare the following set of tools:

  • jack;
  • wheel wrench;
  • screwdriver;
  • pressure gauge and compressor or pump (may be needed if the tire pressure is insufficient).

Disk replacement is required in various situations. The wheel may be worn out, it may collide with an obstacle and, as a result, damage or deformation may occur. Wheels are also changed when tires are punctured. If the tire is tubeless, you can pump it up and continue driving to the nearest tire shop.

A deformed disc affects the car's handling for the worse - it holds the road worse, and you can feel the steering wheel wobbling. Alloy wheels can break, causing the car to fly off the road or cause an accident. Tubeless tires on warped rims are leaky and bleed air through uneven rim flanges. Driving for a long time with such problems is undesirable, so the wheels must be removed and replaced. Before starting work, it is better to wear protective gloves:

  1. The car must be installed on a level area and not interfere with other road users by its location if the replacement is carried out on the road. The procedure is dangerous to carry out on sharp turns, on ring roads, on descents or ascents. It is necessary to turn on the hazard warning lights and display a warning triangle, as required by traffic regulations.
  2. Now you should take out the spare wheel if you are replacing a punctured or damaged element. On the Grant, the spare tire is located under the carpet in the luggage compartment. You need to lift the mat by the loop and remove the spare wheel mounting bolt; this usually does not require additional tools. After unscrewing the bolt, you can take out the spare tire and lower the trunk mat.
  3. If a stamped disc with a decorative cap is installed, you will need to remove the cap first. If a decorative trim is installed, you will need to unscrew the fastening screw with a screwdriver and remove it. There may not be a cover or a cap, besides, there are different fastenings, the most common are plastic latches, you just need to pry them off with a screwdriver and remove the cover by moving it towards yourself.
  4. Using a wheelbrace, loosen, but do not unscrew, the 4 mounting bolts. It may take considerable force to break them off.
  5. After this, the jack is installed in special places under the thresholds. If the jack is standard, it should fit into the rib with its groove; if an alternative tool is used, it is recommended to place a board or mitten under it so as not to damage the anti-corrosion coating. When replacing on soft ground, be sure to place a board under the jack, otherwise it may fall off.
  6. Now you can unscrew all four bolts and remove the wheel.

The new wheel is installed in the reverse order of removal. In this case, it is necessary that the guide pins coincide with the grooves on the disk if it is stamped. The bolts are tightened “by hand” so that the wheel is firmly held in place. Now you can lower the jack and tighten all the bolts crosswise. To prevent damage to the discs, it is not recommended to use metal pipes for reinforcement or tighten bolts by pressing the wrench with your foot.

It is important to tighten the bolts exactly crosswise - this way the disc snaps into place exactly in the center. If you tighten the left and then the right bolts first, the wheel may move slightly, which will lead to poor handling and wobbling of the steering wheel.

After installing the wheel, it is recommended to check the tire pressure using a pressure gauge and, if necessary, inflate them. All industrial compressors have a built-in pressure gauge, so the task is simplified.

Standard disk sizes

When talking about wheel sizes, it is not enough to just mention their diameter. The remaining parameters are important for understanding whether they are comparable to the hub of a Lada Granta car, as well as what type of tire they are intended for.

For example, rim width is the size of the tire seat. The mounting hole pattern gives an idea of whether additional spacer adapters will have to be used. As noted above, this car uses a 4x98 wheel installation scheme with a center of 58.6 mm.

Disc offset is a fairly important indicator, especially when using wide wheels. It reflects in mm the distance from the hub mounting pad to the plane that visually divides the rim into two rings of equal width. Disc diameters are measured in inches.

As standard, the Lada Granta is equipped with sizes R13, R14, R15. It is rare to find a model with 16 discs.

The table shows the recommended tire sizes and the corresponding wheels.

TiresDiscs
175/70R135Jx13ET35
175/65R145Jx14ET35, 6Jx14ET35
185/60R145Jx14ET35, 6Jx14ET35
185/55R155Jx15ET35, 6Jx15ET35
195/50R166.5Jx16ET29

The numbers indicated through a fraction in the tire size mean: tire width / profile height as a percentage of the width. The Latin letter “R” indicates the type of tire - radial. The last numbers correspond to the diameter of the disk.

Standard and alternative disks

In the basic configuration, the Lada Granta is equipped with stamped rims, and every car owner thinks about replacing them with alternative ones. The appearance of the car, road stability, handling, degree of tire wear, and fuel consumption depend on these elements. When installing certain wheels, you need to understand which parameters are more important. This is clearly shown in the table:

The choice is influenced by the material from which the product is made. Metal stamped disks are resistant to damage and reliable, but their main drawback is their heavy weight.

R14 “stamps” are installed on the Grant from the factory.

Wheels made of light alloy materials are much more popular. Their main advantage is the variety of designs, but the cost is higher than stamped ones. According to the manufacturing method, they are distinguished:

  • forged;
  • cast;
  • prefabricated

Of these, cast ones are the highest quality, popular and reliable.

Parameters of standard nuts

One of the main parameters of nuts or bolts is the shape of their pressing surface, which can have several varieties. When selecting the necessary nuts, you should proceed from the shape of the recess in the mounting hole of the disk.

Most often it is necessary to use bolts or nuts with a cone-shaped clamping part. As a rule, the cone has an angle of 60°. Sometimes such bolts may have a 1.3 mm head and a nose at the end of the nut.

The clamping surface of the fastener can also be flat or hemispherical. It is important that the clamping planes of the fastener and the disk fully correspond to each other. Otherwise, over time, as a result of strong dynamic loads, the attachment point will weaken. When choosing nuts with closed heads, you should pay attention to their length.

If the pin prematurely rests on its inner part, then it will not be possible to fully tighten it. Also, nuts that are too short may not leave room for the socket head of the impact wrench. Some wheel models only allow the use of hex or star nuts.

When choosing bolts, you need to consider their length. A reliable connection can only be achieved if the bolt is screwed in to the entire threaded thickness of the hub. However, if it is too long, then when the car moves, such fasteners will begin to cling to internal structures.

Ideally, the tip of the bolt should only protrude a couple of threads when fully tightened. Bolts are made only from steel, but nuts can be steel, aluminum or titanium.

What is a bolt pattern

The bolt pattern, or drilling of the new “Granta” FL, is the number and location of the mounting holes for the bolts in the disk, as well as their diameter. Since these indicators must match the dimensions of the guides on the car hubs, they are very important. After all, it won’t be possible to install disks on the machine otherwise. Therefore, they must be taken into account when selecting these parts.

These sizes differ for different car models and brands. However, for some machines they may be the same. It is noteworthy that this parameter does not affect the choice of disk radius or the selection of tires.

What drives can be installed

It is clear that any car manufacturer, just like AvtoVAZ, always recommends installing only its original sets of spare parts. But replacing a wheel rim with non-standard samples has long been considered completely commonplace.

Often such a replacement can even improve handling characteristics and reduce financial costs. The wrong approach to this issue can lead to the repair of suspension elements and the entire chassis of the car.

Owners of Grants sometimes notice that the standard set with winter tires copes with its functions worse than the less wide non-standard options. Wide wheels are prone to skidding and hydroplaning.

Regardless of the reasons why the discs are replaced, inexpensive stamped products, cast or forged options can be installed on the Lada Granta. If the stamp is made only of steel, then the material for the production of light alloy wheels can be aluminum, titanium and magnesium alloys.

Stamped wheels, despite their unattractive appearance, are in high demand due to their practicality. Firstly, this is the cheapest replacement option, and secondly, with strong impacts such a product will only bend, which can always be fixed, and the unattractive appearance can be easily hidden with inexpensive plastic caps.

But their high weight reduces the dynamics of vehicle acceleration and increases fuel consumption, which often tips the scales towards the purchase of cast and forged wheels, which, due to their lightness and high thermal conductivity, improve dynamics and contribute to faster cooling of the brake elements. Products made from titanium alloy have the most attractive appearance and have the best strength, but they are also the most expensive of this product segment.

Their aluminum counterparts are more popular. They are not as expensive as titanium, but in terms of strength they meet all safety requirements, and, moreover, they look great. The disadvantages of cast wheels include their worse strength characteristics than stamped steel options and high cost. A strong blow can permanently damage the disk.

Selection of wheels for Lada Granta

Car owners prefer to install cast wheels made of light alloy materials. The most common sizes are R14, R15, R16. Wheel rims with sizes R13 and R17 are less common. In the first case, the wheel is too small and does not look good, and in the second, it is too large and can cling to the fender liners and arch when performing various maneuvers. All-season, summer and winter tires for Lada Granta are suitable for standard sizes.

Tire size chart

Unlike the standard sedan, the Lada Granta Sport is already equipped as standard with 16-inch cast multi-spoke wheels, complementing the appearance of the sports version. The liftback is also complemented by these rims, but only in smaller sizes (R14, R15) and exclusively in the “Lux” trim levels. In all cases of changing wheels, you should follow some rules:

  1. When choosing new rims, the main criterion should be adhered to not so much changing the car’s exterior for the better, but rather the design features of the car’s chassis, the quality of the road surface and the driver’s driving style. The maximum permissible wheel diameter on low-profile tires will look out of place on poorly surfaced roads. The assembled product will quickly fail on bumps and holes.
  2. If wheels are selected for the Sport version of the Grant, then the size of the brake discs and calipers should be taken into account. Since these cars have larger brake mechanisms, in order to avoid touching the wheels, it is better not to install rims smaller than 16 inches.

Low-profile tires have higher dynamic characteristics, but are inferior in driving comfort to high-profile tires. For everyday driving, you should choose standard tires on a standard rim.

How to choose stamped products

The version of the Lada Granta Sport under consideration can only be equipped with alloy or forged wheels. Installation of stamped products is not provided by the vehicle manufacturer. However, if necessary, such wheels can be installed; to do this, you should adhere to the listed parameters.

They are not very attractive in terms of appearance and are absolutely not suitable for a sports car. If the decision to install stamping has been made, then it is advisable to operate it in the cold winter season. Such wheels will significantly worsen the technical and dynamic characteristics of the car.

Alloy wheels

When choosing wheels for your car, the buyer needs to clearly understand the difference between them. If the question is about choosing between metal and alloy wheels, then cast aside all doubts and take alloy wheels, as they are better in almost everything.

The weight of the disc is reduced by almost half, which affects the quality of control and reduces the load on the suspension, and the appearance will delight the car owner with beauty. They do have one drawback: the quality directly depends on its price. Cheap discs are easily deformed when impacted, and it is almost impossible to repair them.

Grant wheel caps as a low-cost but effective way of wheel tuning

The presence of cast or light alloy (whatever you like to call them), as well as forged wheels on Grants is perceived by the ambitious audience of our garage grant community as a sign of the financial well-being of the owner of such a car.

However, the use of caps on stamped-welded wheels can not only neutralize the value of both self-affirmation and self-expression of owners of top-end assemblies, but also significantly save on wheel restyling, without reducing the safety of using the car.

One of the significant disadvantages of stamped discs is the fact that they have low cooling capacity for the brake mechanism due to the fact that they almost completely cover it without providing proper airflow. While caps, with the appropriate aerodynamic configuration of the slots, can eliminate these disadvantages of steel disks.

Danger of using non-standard wheels

This threat lies in the fact that the load on the Granta FL was calculated using 15-inch wheels, with optimal influence on the body suspension system, which affects the handling, and the transmission of the Granta FL. What determines the dynamic and economic characteristics of equipment. And all this together directly affects the safety of the machine.

In short, the use of non-standard 16- and 17-inch wheels for restyling face-listed Grants is dangerous for the elements of chassis suspension to the bodies, and such a visual improvement also threatens to reduce vehicle handling. Especially in the presence of severe weather and road conditions with a high probability of emergency situations.

Regarding the 16-, and even more so 17-inch wheel restyling of Grants FL, such an improvement by the same AvtoVAZ, let’s say, is not welcomed because these standard sizes are not mentioned in the Operating Manual. This means that such restyling leads to a direct violation of traffic rules, and this in turn leads to penalties from the vigilant sovereign traffic police.

However, as practice shows, this government service responsible for road safety is not so vigilant, because it turns a blind eye to the almost complete pandemic of wheel restyling of passenger vehicles.

Wheels for cars

Immediately after its release, the Grant model gained great popularity among consumers. In connection with this, the manufacturer decided to expand the model range and release the Granta Sport sports modification.

Wheels "Lada Granta Sport" R16, original

Due to its great popularity and domestic production, there are a huge number of offers on the market for the sale of components and spare parts for the car. These include Lada Sport wheels. The sports version of the car is equipped only with alloy wheels of only two sizes, 15 and 16 inches.

Note!

The manufacturer, the Lada concern, recommends installing only original spare parts and wheels.

However, it often happens that the owner of the car wants to stand out. In such cases, installing wheels from various brands, the products of which are widely represented in stores, will help. For those who want to save money, buying replicas or used products is suitable.

Important!

If you want to get maximum sportiness, you can install R17 size wheels on the Granta Sport.

On such large rims, you can forget about smoothness and comfort, but you can get maximum controllability. There is also a risk of not meeting the permissible dimensions. In this case, the tires will rub against the wheel arches and other structural elements when cornering. This will increase wear on both all chassis parts and the wheels and tires themselves.

If, due to various reasons, the car owner is faced with the question of replacing disks, then it is necessary to take into account many different parameters. Among them, you should take into account the dimensions of height and width, wheel offset, drilling and others. If the selected products have the following characteristics, they will definitely fit the car:

  • Cast wheels with dimensions 185/55 R15 and 195/50 R16;
  • Large products with dimensions 175/55/R17;
  • The company that produces Granta Sport, the AvtoVAZ concern, has an agreement with the manufacturer K&K. The products of this brand are unified for the machine and have all the suitable sizes and necessary parameters.

If the car is operated on original or any other wheels, the manufacturer indicates that during cold periods it is advisable to install narrower wheels and tires. This helps provide greater stability in poor conditions such as snow, ice and other slippery surfaces.

"Lada Granta Sport" on individual forged wheels

Among auto athletes and simply tuning enthusiasts, it is common to replace wheels with larger ones and rework wheel arches and other structural elements. In this case, it is important to remember about the possible loss of warranty, since the manufacturer declares certain dimensions that should not be violated. In addition, increasing the size greatly affects ride comfort, although it improves handling.

Alloy wheels R15 for Lada Granta

The optimal wheel size for the Lada Granta is 15 inches, which gives car owners the right to choose any wheel characteristics within this parameter. So, before purchasing wheels for their “iron horse,” owners should know the following features:

  • Wheels purchased for a used car must be replaced as a set or in pairs, because otherwise the car will skid and become less controllable on the road. Replacing all 4 products is not a problem if the owner wants to improve the appearance of the car. It is not advisable to purchase only one wheel to replace a deformed one if the old one has been in use for more than a year.
  • When choosing the required width of the product, the driver needs to be guided by the place where the car is used, since when driving on good asphalt at high speeds, excessive grip on the road can reduce the speed of the car, and a width of 185 mm will be quite enough, that is, you should not take wheels wider than 5, 5J-6.0J.
  • If the driver uses his Granta in winter, he can install wider wheels, increasing the grip to 195 or 205 mm, which will correspond to a rim size of 6.0J-6.5J.
  • R15 is the optimal size, and it can be used for installing all-season tires, which will significantly save the owner’s money on tire fitting during seasonal “change of shoes.”
