Throttle valve for VAZ (Lada)
The throttle valve is an element of the fuel system of a gasoline engine. These devices supply metered air into the cylinders of the internal combustion engine, thereby taking an active part in the “preparation” of air-fuel mixtures. Their location is between the air filter and the intake manifold.
Uninterrupted operation of a car is impossible without constant “feeding” of the engine with the required volume of oxygen. Note that different power and speed of the car are provided by different amounts of gasoline and fuel. This regulation is precisely what the chokes do. Essentially, they are used as air bypass valves. The designated devices are controlled mechanically or electrically. Throttle valve for mechanical (cable) gas pedal
In mechanical control drives, cables are attached to the gas pedals. The driver, by pressing the indicated pedal, forces the cable to stretch and pull behind it a semicircular metal part connected directly to the damper and located, as a rule, on the same axis of rotation with the latter. As a result, the throttle opens slightly or, on the contrary, closes, thereby supplying air or blocking its supply to the pipeline through which it enters the engine. Drivers of cars equipped with mechanical dampers have to regulate the volume of the air-fuel mixture entering the engine, and, accordingly, its power “outside”, that is, by pressing the accelerator pedal. Only low-budget cars can boast of this principle of operation.
Throttle valve for electronic gas pedal (E-Gas)
All modern cars are equipped with electronic throttle valves, which are characterized by the absence of a cable drive, replaced by the so-called electronic gas pedal. Essentially, the operation of the throttle is controlled electronically. When you press or release the gas pedal, the signal from the corresponding sensor enters the electronic control unit - the “brain” of the car, where it is processed and adjusted, after which a command is sent to the throttle model. As a result, the damper changes position, opening or closing the pipeline through which the air-fuel mixture enters the engine. In addition, the throttle changes positions:
- at the moments of injection and ignition;
- when the required torque is achieved;
- at moments when cars start moving or accelerate.
The advantages of a throttle valve for an electronic gas pedal (E-Gas) are obvious. They are due to the fact that the electronic control unit, constantly receiving information from all sensors, promptly responds to the slightest changes in any parameter. As a result, the operation, in particular, of the engine is optimized, which manifests itself:
- achieving the required torque;
- economical fuel consumption;
- stable operation of the engine at idle speed.
In addition, optimal environmental performance of the vehicle is ensured, as well as the safety of its movement.
Large diameter throttle body, 52mm, 54mm, 56mm, 60mm
Before discussing larger diameter throttle valves, we note that the standard unit has a diameter of 46 millimeters. However, larger dampers are available on the market. They are used when tuning the exhaust system of cars in order to increase engine power. A larger throttle diameter allows you to increase the amount of air entering the internal combustion engine cylinders. This entails an increase in the volume of the air-fuel mixture, an improvement in the dispersion of gasoline, as well as its uniform diffusion in the air. As a result, there is a slight increase in engine power. Note that the devices discussed are most effective when installed in conjunction with a zero-resistance filter.
Does it make sense to install a 54mm throttle body?
Online stores often suggest installing 52, 54 or 56mm instead of the standard 46mm throttle body. The product description states that an enlarged throttle body (throttle body) reduces the air flow rate and increases the air flow rate of the intake system. The effect of the installation will be especially noticeable if the system uses a zero resistance filter. It is recommended to install a throttle with a diameter of 52 mm, because The diameter of the air inlet of the standard receiver is 53mm.
To install a throttle assembly of a different diameter, as a rule, nothing needs to be modified. The maximum that needs to be done is to trim the gasket a little (most often when installing a 56mm throttle body). After installation, many notice positive effects:
Cleaning Rules
Before removing and cleaning the throttle valve, you need to buy a special cleaner for it. There are many manufacturers, there is enough choice. Among the inexpensive ones, Abro is effective.
- You need to remove the engine cover (decorative plastic);
- Reduce the pressure in the cooling system by unscrewing the expansion tank cap;
- Loosen the clamps and remove the hose from the forced ventilation air pipe;
- Use a screwdriver to remove the heating hoses for the remote control (it is advisable to plug them for now);
- Disconnect the cable and unscrew the fastening nuts. Now removal of the throttle assembly is possible;
- Use a cleaner to wash everything very thoroughly. Most often, it is necessary to use a needle to check whether the forced ventilation channel is coked, and also to clean it;
- Cleaning is necessary for the idle air regulator, for which it must be removed and inspected. If you find that it is jamming and adjustment is impossible, then it needs replacement;
- After washing, reassemble everything as it was. Please make sure that the gasket is intact and in good condition, then you can leave it. If this is not the case, then only replacement.
Stories from our readers
“Fucking basin. "
Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.
Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. You’ll laugh, but I work directly on the phone)) If If you want to change your life like me, then here’s what I advise you to do right now: 1. Register on the site 2. Practice on a Demo account (it’s free). 3. As soon as you get something on the Demo account, top up your REAL ACCOUNT and go to REAL MONEY! I also advise you to download the application to your phone, it’s much more convenient to work from your phone. Download here.
- The car becomes more playful.
- Problems with idle speed disappeared.
- The gas pedal becomes more responsive.
There are also disadvantages:
- Fuel consumption according to the BC increases and supposedly the readings are incorrect, the consumption has not changed.
Other owners of “ten” cars see the effect only at 16kl. motors.
In fact, the picture described above may be presented somewhat differently. The positive effect that many people notice when installing a larger diameter throttle body is due to the fact that the old throttle body needed cleaning and the engine was not working properly. After installing the new remote control, the motor begins to operate normally, which was presented as a “new breath”. In other words, the car would become more playful and the pedal more responsive after basic cleaning of the remote control.
What does a big throttle do?
The factory throttle valve in the VAZ 2114 has a diameter of 46 mm. This is the best option for ensuring proper air flow passing through the carburetor and blowing the finished fuel mixture (atomized gasoline with air) into the cylinder, where it is burned.
That is, if you undertake such a modification, you will have to modernize the entire intake tract of the VAZ 2114, starting from the air inlet pipe and ending with the nozzle and the carburetor itself, the fuel mixture injection system into the cavity of the cylinder block. In this case, productivity will indeed increase by almost 30-40%, but at the same time fuel consumption will also increase (by about 15%). Should this modification be made? The decision remains with the car owner.
How to install a wider throttle body?
So, to install a throttle with a larger diameter, you will need:
- disassemble the carburetor;
- remove the old 46 mm damper;
- put a new one at 54, 56 or 52 mm;
- manually bore (cut) the gasket;
- Reassemble everything by lubricating the gasket with automotive sealant (usually red or gray).
Or you can simply replace the gasket with a new one, taking it from the LPG system under 2110; these are sold in almost every automotive parts store and are cheap. But everything will be aligned, smooth and without burrs or oil leakage.
But a 56 mm damper is not recommended. It greatly reduces the speed of air flow, causing insufficient oxygen to enter the cylinder to burn fuel. The 56 mm damper will only be relevant in cars with a gas cylinder equipment system. The throttle itself is installed using a similar method - removing the old one and installing a new one.
And again, the increase only from such a modification in the operation of the car will not give a fundamental change in power. It is better to perform the installation in combination with other methods of tuning an internal combustion engine. Installation on the Priora will not bring any changes, because they already use a 16-valve system. That is, the fuel mixture burns perfectly without unnecessary modifications. A larger diameter throttle valve is simply a waste of money and time for installation work. It is better to modify the factory firmware installed on the on-board computer, and also install a “spider” - there will be more advantages with approximately the same expenses.
Evidence of pollution
Don't forget that the throttle valve can become dirty. Signs of this are the following criteria: the engine begins to stall, lose speed, the engine starts with difficulty, at the minimum speed of the car, jerking begins. Always check the throttle assembly for causes of problems. Damper contamination occurs in many cases. Settlement occurs on the walls of the mechanism, entering the assembly due to ventilation of gases. Another reason is poor filter performance.
What modifications can be made to complement the installation of a wider throttle body?
If possible, you should install modified firmware of the on-board computer, where the ignition start time will be reduced, and the automatic adjustment of the damper will be increased to a more open position when certain engine speeds are reached. You can also install a 16-valve system, like on the Priora. Then it will be possible to regulate the moment of spark supply and opening of the valves for exhaust. These are additional chip tuning capabilities (modifications by changing and upgrading the software of the electronic control unit). And also, if possible, it is better to test the damper in 52 mm, 56, 50. Auto repair shops are sure to have these, and the tests will take at most 20 minutes.
So, installing a new damper is not difficult. But simply replacing it will practically not change anything in the operation of the engine. However, if you expand the receiver and, in general, the entire intake to a wider one, this will already be a major modernization of the engine. Not only the power will increase, but also the speed of acceleration and smoothness when changing gears.

Checking the functionality of the sensor
With the ignition on, use a voltmeter to check the VAZ TPS voltage between the “minus” and the slider contact (it should not exceed 0.7 V). Open the damper by turning the plastic sector and measure the voltage again.
This time the sensor should output at least 4 V or a little more. With the ignition off, you need to pull out the connector and check the resistance between any terminal and the slider contact. As you turn the sector, watch whether the voltmeter readings change smoothly.
If they “jump,” then a replacement is necessary, preferably with a non-contact TPS.
As evidenced by the practice of a huge number of VAZ car owners, a contactless sensor will last much longer, it does not require additional adjustments, modifications, and inspection will be needed much less often.

Big throttle on LADA. Does it make sense to install it? Owner experience
Hi all! In this text we will talk about such easy tuning of the intake system as installing a throttle valve of increased diameter.
What does this give us? It allows the engine to pass the greatest amount of air. And the easier it is for him to do this, the greater the output power will be. Let me remind you that the diameter of the stock damper on VAZ 2108-2115 cars is 46 mm. Accordingly, when installing a throttle with a diameter of 52-56 mm on a car, in theory, the power should increase, which we will check later.
What size should I install the damper then?
By installing a throttle with a diameter of 56 mm on the “stock” motor, we will give the motor the opportunity to process air even more easily, compared to 52 and 54 mm, and even more so 46 mm. After all, with the same pressure on the gas pedal, much more air enters through 56 mm than through 46. But comfort in the cabin will be lost, a jerk will appear at the bottom, and you will also need to work more carefully with the accelerator pedal. In general, without a habit, it will be difficult at first.
52 mm is “neither two nor one and a half.” The effect will be practically unnoticeable! Since the difference with the “stock” one is only 8 mm. Money down the drain, so to speak.
It's best to set it to 54 mm, which is what I did. Some kind of golden mean. But this is all theory. Let's move on to practice.
Unfortunately, I myself forgot to measure the acceleration “before and after”. But on the well-known YouTube site I found a video of one guy who was just doing this procedure. At first he had a completely stock VAZ-2112 coupe. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h was around 11.9 seconds. Then he installed a larger throttle (56mm) and it turned out that the acceleration from 0 to 100 took one second less than before, namely 10.9 seconds.

A little theory
Using a standard throttle valve, air consumption measurements showed that the engine consumes approximately 14 kg at idle, and about 22 kg at 3000 rpm. All this, of course, only applies to a fully functional engine. If we take measurements with a modified damper, then consumption at idle speed remains the same, but at the same 3000 revolutions it increases from 22 to 33 kg. This means that the increase in power is only felt at rpm of 2500 and above.
In a word, such tuning of the throttle valve on the VAZ 2110 takes place if the car often moves along the highway. In the city you won’t be able to experience all the delights of the modification.
