In the VAZ 2114 device, the IAC (idle speed regulator) is a mechanism that allows you to automatically stabilize and regulate the idle speed of the vehicle’s internal combustion engine. The XX VAZ 2114 sensor is essentially an electric motor with a conical needle mounted in the housing.

Where is the IAC located on the VAZ 2114?
The idle speed sensor on the VAZ 2114, as on any other car, is used to automatically regulate engine speed in neutral gear or when changing gears. The valve ensures that the required amount of air enters the combustion chambers. The element opens or slightly opens the throttle valve when it is necessary to lean the fuel mixture. This allows you to increase the speed to XX.
The regulator, located on VAZ 2114 injection engines, is installed in the mounting hole on the throttle body. As you can see in the photo of the IAC, it has the shape of a cylinder with two lugs for fastening.
It is worth noting that the part is only present on cars with a mechanical throttle assembly. On cars with an electronic gas pedal produced from 2010 to 2013, its function is performed by electronics.
A LITTLE ABOUT THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF THE SENSOR
The main task of such devices is the dosed supply of air to form a working mixture. The cone-shaped needle acts as a locking device.

The needle is clearly visible in the photo. When the ignition is turned on, the needle cone completely rests against the calibration hole and closes the flow of the air mixture. When starting the engine, the DHX drive opens the channel in steps, and the motor receives the amount of air required at the moment. The opening size of the device depends on the firmware of the electronic control unit.
The VAZ 2114 idle speed regulator regulates the air flow, bypassing the throttle channel, and also adjusts the engine speed in idle modes.
Symptoms of a problem
You can understand that the IAC has failed by the following signs:
- The engine is running at idle. With this phenomenon, shaking and rattling of the car is felt;
- The car stalls at idle. The engine may suddenly stall in neutral or when changing gears;
- When starting a cold power unit, the speed does not rise. If the valve is working properly, they grow quite quickly as they warm up. If it breaks down, the tachometer needle remains at the same low level for a long time;
- The revs fluctuate at XX. The instrument needle may rise and fall involuntarily.
These symptoms can sometimes signal not only the breakdown of a given unit, they can also be caused by other reasons. For example, a defect in the throttle position sensor (TPS). But when they appear, you should first check this valve. Another indicator of this malfunction is a drop in the speed of the power unit when the headlights or heater are turned on. The car may suddenly stall when starting, which sometimes also indicates this problem. But only diagnostics of the part will help to accurately identify the problem.

How to check the idle speed sensor on a VAZ 2114?
The peculiarity of this valve is that its failure cannot be determined by the on-board computer or, for example, by a burning Check Engine icon on the dashboard. Let’s say that an ordinary on-board vehicle can report a failure of the TPS. Therefore, you can only check its performance manually, knowing where the idle speed sensor is located. You will also need a multimeter for this. To check the element, open the hood and disconnect the block that provides power from it. To test the idle speed sensor on a VAZ 2114 injector with a 1.6-liter 8-valve engine, you also need to remove the throttle mount, moving it some distance from the assembly. When diagnosing, it is worth initially checking the condition of the regulator circuit, since problems often arise with it, and not with the part itself. Also, sometimes you may encounter a dead or faulty battery or a breakdown of the power unit control unit. Checking with a multitester will help identify such problems. It is advisable to perform it with an assistant. And it is carried out in the following sequence:
- Select the “Voltmeter” mode on the measuring device.
- Connect the black probe to ground, and secure the red one to the outer side terminals of the block. They are indicated in the figure by the letters A and D.
- Ask an assistant to turn on the ignition and check the multimeter readings. At least 12 volts should appear on its screen. At lower values, the battery or generator should be tested. When the device does not show any values, the wiring or engine control unit is faulty. In this case, diagnostics of these nodes is carried out.
If no problems have been identified in the circuit, then diagnostics of the regulator itself will be required. It can also be checked with a multimeter. To do this, the device is switched to ohmmeter mode. The sequence of operation is as follows:
- Connect the probes of the device to the terminals on the left side of the valve, marked in Figure A and B, and then to the right ones, marked in Figure C and D. If the stabilizer is working properly, the device will show about 53 Ohms.
- Then connect the probes to terminals A and C, then B and D. In this case, the infinity symbol should appear on the ohmmeter.
If the multimeter readings are abnormal, the valve is faulty. Most likely it will need to be replaced. But in some cases the element can be cleaned with carburetor cleaner.
Device
Modern automakers use 3 types of idle speed sensor: solenoid, rotary and stepper. For VAZ 2114–2115 the latter type is used. IAC is a stepper mini-electric motor that opens/closes the air duct of the intake manifold of the internal combustion engine, thereby regulating the speed (similar to a bolt on a carburetor).
The IAC design has a ring magnet, a lead screw (needle) and 2 windings. When voltage is applied to the magnet and windings, an electromagnetic field appears. As a result, the lead rotor begins to rotate, thereby driving the lead screw through the worm gear. Depending on the position of the rotor, the needle valve is able to control the opening/closing of the air duct of the intake manifold.
For reference. What is a step? This is the distance between the conical shut-off valve (IAC tip) and the intake manifold. It is measured by the number of full rotations of the rotor.
Replacing the IAC on a VAZ 2114
In order to change the IAC, you need to purchase a new part from a car store. For different motor models, its catalog number is different. But many craftsmen claim that the elements are interchangeable. Replacing it on a 1.5-liter power unit is very simple, but on a 1.6-liter engine it has some difficulties. The algorithm for performing the work is as follows:
- Remove the casing protecting the power unit. When working, it is advisable to disconnect the battery terminals.
- Disconnect the air filter pipe.
- Remove the throttle cable.
- Unscrew the two nuts with a size 13 wrench and remove the throttle assembly.
- Unscrew the two screws and disconnect the wires from the regulator.
- Remove the stabilizer from its seat.
- Install a new regulator and carry out the above operations in reverse order.
Upon completion of work, the new valve should be checked. To do this, you need to turn on the car’s ignition and, after waiting a few seconds, start the engine. Its idle speed will change smoothly as it warms up. Previously present problems at XX should disappear.
Replacement
Replacement is quite simple and does not require special skills in car repair. You just need to prepare a Phillips screwdriver with a short shaft and you can start replacing.
- Remove the connector from the IAC;
- Unscrew the two IAC fastening bolts using a Phillips screwdriver;
- We take out the IAC
- We install the new IAC in the reverse order, not forgetting to put a new O-ring on it;
Repair
It is not always possible or even the desire to spend money on buying a new device. Regardless of the reasons, it is quite possible to try to solve the problem of a failed or poorly functioning idle speed sensor using a repair method.
- Try cleaning the old sensor.
- To do this, you should dismantle it and thoroughly clean all contacts using a cotton swab soaked in carburetor cleaner.
- Next, the rod, needle and spring are generously treated with cleaner.
- A toothbrush can easily clean areas smeared with carburetor cleaner.
- Rinse the device again and then return it to its place.
- Not infrequently, such events made it possible to achieve excellent results; idle speed began to work again as before.
But this is the simplest repair option, which is not always worth counting on. There is a more complex, but at the same time more effective option for self-repairing a failed idle air control:
- Remove the sensor, clean its external elements, as indicated in the previous repair method;
- Remove the three pins securing the sensor housing;
- Remove the regulator housing as carefully as possible. Really slow and careful not to damage the contacts;
- After disassembly, you may notice the presence of broken solder. In this situation, the wire is soldered in place, and the soldering area is treated with a special anti-corrosion varnish;
- If there are gaps in the body of the gap adjuster, they are eliminated using sealant. This will prevent air from being sucked in through the valve.
If, when disassembling the device, problems are discovered on the winding or the needle is worn out, repair will not help. You will have to change the IAC completely.
The issue of malfunctioning idle air control is quite common in the case of the VAZ 2114. This element cannot be called the weak point of the car, but no one wants to face such a breakdown. As, indeed, with any other malfunction. But where can you get away from them?!

Preparing for replacement: choosing a sensor and the necessary tools
Before you begin replacing the sensor, you need to carry out some preparatory measures. First of all, this is the purchase of a new spare part. You can find quite a lot of sensors on the market that are suitable for the VAZ-2114, but there are two of the most proven and affordable :
