How to replace the constant velocity joint on the “nine” yourself?

A CV joint is a constant velocity joint. It is a loaded, very significant element of the chassis for front-wheel drive VAZ 2109. Under ideal operating conditions, the resource of the element is designed for a long service life, almost equal to the service life of the car itself.

Signs of failure of the outer grenade (CV joint).

There are two options here:

  • signs that your grenade has already broken,
  • signs that the grenade will soon come out and break.

How to understand that a grenade will soon break.

Of course, the first sign of a malfunction of the external grenade is a crackling sound. If you hear a crackling noise while driving with the steering wheel turned, it is definitely a CV joint. The greater the angle of rotation of the wheel and the harder you press on the gas, the louder the clicks. Another sign that does not always appear is vibration on the steering wheel at speeds above 80 km/h. The vibration is only slightly similar to the vibration from an unbalanced wheel. It usually manifests itself as a slight twitching of the steering wheel.

How to understand that the outer CV joint has broken.

If the CV joint breaks, the car will stop moving. In any gear engaged, press the gas, the speed increases, but the car does not move.

How to understand that it is the outer CV joint that has broken, and not the internal one or the clutch in general (the first signs of failure are similar to the signs of a clutch failure)? First of all, start the car and put it in any gear. Next, open the hood and look in turn at each of the shafts going from the box to the wheels (one short, the other long). If any shaft is spinning, it means that the CV joint has broken on this side.

I recommend not just visually looking at the shaft, but touching it with some long, hard object, such as a stick. The main thing is that there is nothing on it that can wrap around the shaft!!! When you touch the shaft with a stick, if it is spinning, you will feel a slight vibration. This is usually done in the dark, because it is difficult to understand whether a cylindrical object is spinning, especially in the dark.

How to independently determine problems with the constant velocity joint on the “nine”?

Lubrication Both types of hinges are structurally one unit, but the outer one breaks much more often due to high loads and rotation angles. Let's look at some signs of identifying a malfunction and ways to detect it:

  • when trying to move the wheel hub in different planes, play is felt;
  • when changing speed or starting off, the car moves jerkily;
  • with the steering wheel turned to the maximum, start moving - the faulty outer joint makes a certain crunching sound;
  • extraneous noise in straight-line motion indicates a problem with the internal joint.

Good diagnostic results are obtained by a technique that allows you to lift the car (at least jack it up). Here it is possible to rotate the wheel when the internal joint is maximally curved. It is in this way that you can hear the so-called hinge “crunch”, which allows us to speak with absolute certainty about the breakdown of the constant velocity joint.

Replacing CV joints

The most important thing now is to knock down the old hinge (or both, if you are also changing the internal one). To do this, you will need to firmly clamp the drive itself in a vice so that the hinge to be removed is directed downward. Apply sharp and strong blows with a hammer to knock down the hinge. If you are only replacing the anthers, try to carry out all work carefully so as not to damage the elements.

But if troubles arise when replacing a VAZ-2109 CV joint and the old joint does not want to come loose, you will need to take extreme measures. Using a grinder, you need to cut the outer casing to free the entire inner part. After this, you will have access to the retaining ring on the drive, removing which you can completely disassemble the element.

Installing new hinges is done in the reverse order. First, install the anthers, then the locking ring and put on the grenade. Gently hit it through the wooden spacer so that it locks onto the ring. The drive is installed without any special features.

The video tutorial is suitable for VAZ 2109.

1. Remove the wheel and unscrew the hub nut. It is not easy to unscrew the hub nut. We call an assistant to press the brakes, and you unscrew the nut with a large wrench.

2. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the ball joint and remove the CV joint from the steering knuckle.

3. Before dismantling the drive, you need to drain half the oil from the gearbox.

4. We knock the inner CV joint off the splines and remove the drive. Usually it is easily removed, 2-3 blows and can be removed by hand.

5. Fix the drive in a vice and remove the outer CV joint.

6. We use new CV joints from GKN. The kit includes a CV joint, boot, lubricant, clamp and wheel nut.

7. Install a small clamp and put on the boot.

8. Fill the CV joint with lubricant.

9. With light blows of a hammer, we put the CV joint in place.

10. Straighten the boot and close the two clamps.

11. We install the clamp in the direction of rotation, otherwise the clamp itself may open.

12. Add oil to the box, install the drive and put everything back together.

Replacement

If problems arise with grenades, you should determine which ones have problems. Next we will look at how to change the drive and how to remove it. Additionally, we recommend watching the repair manual video.

The procedure for replacing inner and outer CV joints differs from each other, therefore each stage should be considered separately.

Let's start with the internal.

Inner CV joint

Rubber boots are a vulnerable element of the grenade design. It is not uncommon that by replacing the boot, washing the grenade with gasoline and applying new lubricant, it is possible to solve the problem. If the wear of the CV joint is insignificant, such measures can replace a full repair.

But if you discover the breakdown late, you will have to completely replace the inner CV joints.

  1. Apply the handbrake and install chocks under the wheels.
  2. Unscrew the hub nut using a wrench and a socket. Carefully remove the punching elements from the nut with a punch. This way you will be able to preserve the carving on the garnet. The nut itself will need to be replaced with a new one during reassembly.
  3. The main thing here is to unscrew the nut, lowering the wheels to the ground. Otherwise, you risk breaking the differential and other gearbox components.
  4. Raise the car using a jack on the desired side, first loosening the wheel nuts. Remove the wheel.
  5. Drain the gearbox oil. This can be done earlier, at your convenience.
  6. Release the steering knuckle from the ball joint at the bottom. To do this, unscrew a pair of mounting bolts.
  7. Since you have already removed the hub nut and unscrewed the ball joint from the steering knuckle, proceed to removing the splined part of the grenade. To do this, pull the brake disc and strut assembly towards you. She has a decent ride. Just remember to turn the steering wheel all the way so that the tip of the steering wheel extends as far as possible.
  8. Pry the inner grenade with a pry bar, which will allow you to remove the drive.
  9. Having taken out the CV joint, look at the condition of the oil seal in the gearbox. If you find traces of leaks, be sure to replace the element.

The internal drive (CV joint) is designed to work with smaller angles, its boot is less susceptible to negative influences. Therefore, the internal grenade is changed quite rarely.

Tools for repairs

The procedure for replacing VAZ grenades is quite simple, but you will have to suffer a little, since knocking the old element off the drive is problematic. You need these tools:

  1. Set of sockets and keys. In particular, you will need a socket wrench or a “30” socket.
  2. Jack (it is best to use a hydraulic one paired with a support).
  3. Hammer.
  4. Chisel. Before replacing the grenade on the VAZ-2109, it must be removed; to do this, you will need to loosen the nut.
  5. Capacity 4-5 liters.
  6. Puller for retaining rings.
  7. Vise.

You will also need a new repair kit. It consists of a grenade, a locking ring, lubricant, a nut, a boot and two clamps.

Installation

We take out the boot and put it on the drive shaft, after which we fix its inner part with a small clamp. The fixing process is very simple - after the hole gets into the recess, we tighten the clamp using wire cutters. Inside the boot we place at least 40 cm3 (the equivalent of two matchboxes) of CV joint grease-4, which comes complete with the new hinge.

Rice. 11 — Installing the boot and clamp tie

Attention! Never reuse parts such as clamps and hub nuts, as these parts are disposable!

After this, we put on the hinge and, with light blows of a hammer, hammer it in until it stops. We put on the boot and secure it with a large clamp, similar to the small one. Now you need to get the hinge splines into the spline hole of the hub, and then put on the washer and hub nut. Next, we bring the strut into position above the ball joint and tighten the pre-oiled bolts.

Rice. 12 — Installing a new hinge

Rice. 13 — Clamp tie

Note:

It is recommended to lubricate all bolts discussed in this article. This will slow down the oxidation of the bolts, and in the future will allow you to unscrew them with less effort.

We put on the wheel and first tighten the oiled wheel bolts. Next, you need to lower the car onto the wheels, and then place bricks under the “operated” wheel. Tighten the wheel bolts with normal force and the wheel nut with a torque of 220 Nm. If there is no special wrench, tighten the nut with maximum force, after which you need to lock it using an impact screwdriver and a hammer.

After the car has driven 500-1000 km, re-check the tightness of the ball joint bolts and, if necessary, tighten them.

Installing new hinges

And the final stage remains - installing new hinges on the drive. You already know almost everything about how to change a grenade on a VAZ-2109. All that remains is to install a new element.

First, wash the shaft, get rid of dust and lubricant residues, then put on a new boot. Next, perform the following manipulations:

  1. Install a new retaining ring.
  2. Carefully, trying not to damage it, place the grenade on the shaft. To make it sit down, you need to apply several sharp blows through the wood spacer.
  3. Apply lubricant under the boot and on the inside of the hinge. By the way, the kit comes with a small amount, it is recommended to add a little more.
  4. Secure the boot with two clamps.

Once you have assembled the entire drive, you can begin installing it on the car. The work is done in reverse order. First put the inner CV joint in place, then the outer one.

Tighten the nut and secure it with a chisel. To prevent corrosion, you can apply a small amount of Litol to the nut and close it with a cap. Now you know how to change a grenade on a VAZ-2109 yourself. The procedure will not take much time, but you can save a lot of money. Workshops will charge about the same amount for repairs as a set of hinges costs (about 1,000 rubles).

How to install a new CV joint on a VAZ.

Be sure to follow this sequence for installing new parts:

  1. Small clamp.
  2. Grenade boot.
  3. Large clamp.
  4. Retaining ring.
  5. The CV joint itself.

First, we clean the drive shaft from dust, dirt and old grease. Most CV joints come with lubricant, a boot, two clamps and sometimes a new hub nut. If suddenly there is no lubricant in the kit, it is better to use graphite lubricant, and if it is not available, then simple lithol. First of all, we put on a small collar. Then the boot (it should go behind the limiting washer) and a large clamp. Then we put a retaining ring on the drive shaft. Now open the tube of lubricant and completely squeeze it into the grenade. Now it's time to put the CV joint on the drive. Because of the locking ring, it will be difficult to insert the drive into the grenade, so we take a hammer and lightly, trying not to damage the thread, press the grenade into place. Now you need to put the boot on the CV joint and tighten the clamps. Assembly occurs in reverse disassembly sequence, but there is one nuance! Do not overtighten the hub nut! This may cause the bearing to hum. The hub nut must be tightened with a force of 225.0–250.0 N*m. Of course, few people have a torque wrench. So, tighten the nut tightly, but not with all your might. In theory, a force of a maximum of 25 kg will need to be applied to a meter-long knob. But, the extension pipe will spring back under such force, so how can you describe it exactly? But obviously there is no need to jump with weight.

I hope I helped you. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments.

Replacing the CV joint and boot on a VAZ-2109 - what is needed for this and how the replacement is carried out

Hello, dear car enthusiasts! Greetings to all car enthusiasts, happy owners of the VAZ “Nine”! With the start of VAZ's production of eighth and ninth series vehicles, a change in priorities occurred on the domestic passenger car market.

The rear-wheel drive “classics” now have worthy competitors, whose chances of getting higher positions in the sales rankings increase every day.

A more modern design, an economical and dynamic engine and, of course, front-wheel drive, became the distinctive features that allowed the new models to become the object of dreams of thousands of car enthusiasts.

The new car required car service technicians and their owners to gain knowledge and completely new skills in repairing components that were not found on previous models. One of the most mysterious parts that is often a dead end is the VAZ 2109 CV joint.

CV joint 2109 – the basis of front-wheel drive

Thanks to the fact that the front wheels became the drive wheels, the “Nine” gained excellent maneuverability and significantly reduced fuel consumption. For all good things, sooner or later you have to pay.

The ability for the front wheels to be driven was given by a special device - CV joint 2109. Constant velocity joint - this is how the mysterious set of letters is deciphered.

Internal CV joints of the VAZ 2109 transmit rotation from the gearbox to the axles, at opposite ends of which external CV joints are installed. They are the ones who spin the wheel and allow it to turn.

The importance of CV joints cannot be underestimated

In this regard, it is important to constantly take care of their condition

Constant operation of a car requires, in relation to CV joints, the implementation of several simple rules, namely:

  • periodically inspect the condition of the CV joint boots and internal lubrication;
  • immediately replace the VAZ 2109 CV joint boot if it is damaged;
  • If such signs as impacts or “crunching” of the CV joint appear, the CV joint must be immediately replaced with a VAZ 2109.

What is needed to independently replace the CV joint on a VAZ 2109?

In order for the repair work to go smoothly, you need to be properly prepared. It should be noted right away that it is only at first glance that replacing the VAZ 2109 CV joint boot or the hinge itself (both external and internal) seems like a difficult undertaking.

Having carried out the procedure of replacing the CV joint or boot once, any car enthusiast will be able to repeat everything, as they say, with his eyes closed.

Preparation for CV joint repair includes the following steps:

  • purchasing a new CV joint, boot, lubricant, clamps and other accessories, which, as a rule, are included in one repair kit;
  • the car is installed on an overpass or inspection hole, but in addition, a jack and “goats” should be prepared for the safety of the repair work being carried out;
  • You should have a set of standard tools on hand, including: socket wrenches with extended handles or attachments, a hammer, brass or wooden spacers.

You need to start by putting the car on the parking brake and fixing the rear wheels with stops. After the hub nuts and wheel bolts are loosened, the front of the car is raised and placed on racks so that the wheels are suspended.

The wheel must be removed, as well as unscrew the hub nut and remove the lock washer. The preparation ends by unscrewing the two bolts securing the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle.

How is the outer CV joint of a VAZ 2109 replaced?

Before we begin describing the repair process, we note that regardless of whether it is necessary to replace one CV joint or both, and also how many boots need to be replaced, the shaft with two CV joints must be removed.

First, let's look at how to do this. Having turned the hub using the steering wheel, using gentle blows through the spacer, knock out the axle shaft of the outer CV joint from the splined joint of the hub.

Then, using a pry bar, you can remove the inner CV joint. All. The shaft with CV joints is ready for repair. If CV joints are removed from both sides at once, it is strongly recommended to insert old hinges into the gearbox mounting sockets so that the gears do not move.

For convenience, the shaft is clamped in a vice. Now you can remove or cut off the old boots and lightly hit the CV joint body with a hammer to remove it.

A similar algorithm of actions will always be used if it is necessary to replace the CV joint boot or the hinge itself.

If one CV joint is being repaired (changed), you should never be too lazy to disassemble, wash and re-lubricate the second one. It is better to change the anthers at the same time.

The shaft is installed in the reverse order.

Replacement instructions and Video!

The reason for replacing a part of the internal CV joint on your VAZ-2109 may be the sound of a “crunch” heard when turning on the highway. A part of constant velocity joints - CV joint, like any car component, has a tendency to wear out. You can check the condition of the CV joint by bleeding the drive axle shaft. If you feel noticeable play or find damage to the CV joint cover, this part will have to be replaced.

A CV joint can only be disassembled and repaired if you are very poor and have solid technological skills. In all other cases, it is recommended to replace this part as a whole, assembled. Damage to the CV joint can be caused either by natural wear or as a result of foreign objects getting inside after its cover is damaged. It is worth noting that the components of this assembly are not mutually interchangeable. Also, a sign of the need to replace the CV joint may be traces of grease on its cover or on the area connecting the gearbox and the drive half of the axle. Let's look at how the operation to replace a CV joint on a VAZ 2109 model is performed:

Before starting work on changing the CV joint, remove the entire front drive assembly of your wheel.

Fix the removed axle shaft in a prepared vice. This way you will get ample access to the parts of the fastening clamps (internal and external) of this unit. Remove the mounting clamps.

Move the protective cover towards the inner end of the axle shaft and turn the cover over to the reverse side.

The entire CV joint must be removed from the axle shaft using a knockout device. Force must be applied to the clip of the part being removed.

Please note that there is a plastic plug at the end of the inner end of the axle shaft. Do not forget to check for its presence when reassembling the unit, when you install the drive shaft in its place.

Check the presence and level of lubricant in the CV joint assembly being placed. Its quantity should be about 80 cm3. If the amount of lubricant is low, replenish it.

It is necessary to install the CV joint assembly without hitting it very hard with a hammer through a wooden spacer. The direction of influence should be directed towards the outer end of the axle shaft. The signal for the end of the impact will be the fixation of the CV joint assembly. During installation, do not allow dirt to enter the CV joint assembly.

Before installing the CV joint protection cover, use a flat blade screwdriver to press out its edge. Once air gets inside, the cover will expand.

When installing the boot of the inner CV joint, maintain a distance of 21 centimeters between the near edge of the boot and the inner edge of the shank. Tighten the fixing clamps using special pliers.

How to remove a vaz shruz

Having determined that it is the external grenade that is broken, we begin to remove it.

How to unscrew the hub nut on a VAZ?

First of all, unscrew the hub nut. To do this, take a 30mm head and a lever, the larger the better. We put bricks under the wheels to prevent the car from rolling (simply putting it in gear is not an option, the wheel will spin) and begin to unscrew the hub nut.

In this matter, the more you weigh, the better, since I very often lacked my weight and leverage of about one and a half meters. I got out of the situation in the following way: I stood completely on the lever, as close to the edge as possible, thereby giving maximum tension to the nut, and hit the lever with a hammer. Usually this method helped me unscrew even the most soured wheel nuts.

One more nuance: if the outer walls of the head come into contact with the walls of the hub, it is better to lubricate the head with mining or lithol, or, in extreme cases, with silicone grease. Thanks to this trick, the head will not bite in the hub.

How to remove a grenade?

The hub nut is unscrewed, now we remove the wheel, unscrew the two bolts that hold the ball joint, disconnect the suspension arm and the hub, move it to the side of the car while lightly tapping the grenade, remove it from the hub. At this point, two options are possible:

  1. The grenade is already broken.
  2. Replacing the grenade due to its crunching sound.

In the first case, you simply remove the outer part of the CV joint from the shaft, then the retaining ring from the drive shaft and knock off the cage with a hammer.

In the second case, removing the CV joint becomes more difficult. You need to deflect the grenade relative to the shaft at the maximum angle so that the bearing balls and their cage are visible.

Now use a hammer to break the jumpers of the cage between the bearing balls and take out the balls one by one. When you take out the last ball, you can remove the body of the grenade, and then its inner part sitting on the shaft, after first removing the locking ring from the shaft.

Of course, you can simply try to knock the grenade off the shaft, but due to the locking ring this will be problematic.

That's it, the CV joint is completely removed. Now let's start installing the new part.

  • Jack;
  • Wheel bolt wrench;
  • Power wrench;
  • Ratchet driver;
  • Steering and ball pin remover;
  • Head at seventeen, thirty;
  • Magnet;
  • Hammer;
  • Oil collection container;
  • Mounting lever;
  • Vise;
  • Slotted screwdriver;
  • Dull wire cutters;
  • Engine cleaner in aerosol;
  • The extension is sharpened to a cone;
  • Torque wrench.
  1. Loosen the wheel bolts, jack up and remove the wheel.
  2. Remove the cap and unscrew the hub nut using a 30 mm socket. When unscrewing the nut, ask an assistant to press the brake pedal. You can also remove the nut while the car is on its wheels.

Use a magnet to remove the washer that is placed behind the hub nut.
Unscrew the nut securing the steering joint to the shock absorber. Head nut for seventeen. Use a puller to squeeze your finger out of your ear. If you don’t have a puller, you can hit the end of the eye where the finger is inserted several times with a hammer. Unscrew the two bolts securing the ball joint to the steering knuckle and move it to the side.

Remove the outer grenade from the splined part of the wheel bearing.

Place a container to collect the oil and remove the internal grenade from the manual transmission. To remove the grenade, insert the mounting lever into the cut in the drive housing and manual transmission. Next, tap the lever with a hammer until the grenade moves.

Pull the inner grenade out of the box and remove the drive shaft.

Remove the boot from the grenade by opening the clamps in advance. The clamps can be opened with a slotted screwdriver.

Grab the slotted part of the grenade with one hand and use a hammer to hit the outer body of the grenade with the other hand. After two or three hits the grenade will be in your hand.

Remove the old boot from the shaft and clean the spline part of the old grease. Fill the new CV joint with grease and, if necessary, replace the retaining ring on the shaft. Place the boot on the shaft with the narrow side facing inward.

VAZ 2109 - grenade replacement, photo, video

The “Grenade” (as it was popularly called) was called a constant velocity joint (or, as it is correctly called, a constant velocity joint). It is designed for mechanical transmission of torque from the gearbox drive shaft to the wheels and ensures uniform rotation (without jerking) of the wheels when turning at angles exceeding 70 degrees. The breakdown of this important organ, most often caused by dirt getting under the boot (rubber protection), is serious and must be fixed as soon as possible, because it is the most important element in the front-wheel drive.

To find out whether this mechanism requires repair, you need to find a sufficiently large area, turn the steering wheel in any desired direction until it stops, and move off very sharply. If during a maneuver you hear a characteristic crunch in the front of the car, it means that the grenade requires immediate repair. The side that requires repair corresponds to the side to which you turned the steering wheel during the maneuver.

The choice of the repair side (if both are worn out) is yours, but it is recommended to replace the grenade first on one side and then on the other. However, if you are replacing more than one, you can do the work on both sides.

  1. First of all, remove the boot from the hub nut on the wheel and loosen the nut. It's worth noting that you will need plenty of force, so it is recommended to use all possible leverage.
  2. Loosen the wheel bolts slightly, jack up the car, place a stump with a diameter of at least 30 cm under the body and remove the wheel. Then you can finally unscrew the hub nut and throw it away, because it can always be replaced with a new one.
  3. Now you need to remove the brake caliper so that it is not in the way, which is held on by two 19 bolts. There is no need to unscrew the brake hose; it will be enough to hang the caliper on it in the engine compartment.
  4. Using a 17mm wrench, also unscrew the two bolts that hold the lower ball joint and move the lower arm down so that it is out of the way.
  5. Place a small wooden block against the hub and, with sharp blows of a hammer, knock out the CV joint inward.
  6. Remove the clamp from the boot, then remove the boot itself, clamp the drive shaft with a gas wrench and knock out the outer grenade with a hammer. If it is necessary to replace the internal CV joint, then drain the transmission oil from the gearbox in advance and, using a chisel and hammer, remove the internal grenade.
  7. Next, first of all, a boot is installed on the drive shaft, then the outer grenade is lubricated at the junction with the drive shaft, a clamp is secured to the boot and a retaining ring is installed. The drive shaft must be hammered onto the grenade with a hammer made of soft metal or with some kind of lining (the same block).

  8. The remaining lubricant is squeezed out inside the boot, which then must be placed directly on the grenade.
  9. Now all that remains is to carefully drive the drive shaft with the grenade into the gearbox and drive the grenade itself into the wheel hub using shims.
  10. Insert the ball joints into place, or, best of all, replace them with new ones while you still have the opportunity. After this operation, tighten the two ball joint bolts.
  11. Attach the caliper to the hub. The pads can also be replaced if they are worn out.
  12. We install a new hub nut and tighten it until it stops, after which we install the wheel, tighten it, remove the car from the jack and, using an additional lever, tighten the hub nut as tightly as possible. Don't forget to also wear a duster.

As you noticed, there is nothing complicated in this process! Good luck on the roads!

Causes and malfunctions of the CV joint

The reason for replacing the “grenade” (as motorists nickname the CV joint due to its external similarity) is usually the ingress of sand and dirt through a torn boot (cover).

A damaged boot can often not be detected immediately, and when operating a unit with this fault, 200 km of run is enough before it completely fails.

The nature of the malfunction is probably familiar to all motorists; it is a strong crunching sound when turning, while simultaneously accelerating. If you discover such a symptom, it is necessary to repair the drive as soon as possible.

The constant availability of spare parts for domestic cars in stores, as well as their affordable price, makes it possible to make CV joint repairs not too costly in financial terms.

But you should know that, for example, replacing a CV joint boot on a VAZ 2109 in terms of the scope of work is practically no different from replacing an internal or external drive.

Therefore, in practice, in terms of labor intensity, repairing a CV joint cannot be called easy; moreover, skills in working with metalwork tools and compliance with all safety regulations when performing such work are required.

A little about the device

Two VAZ 2109 drives consist of four CV joints, two of which transmit torque to the axle shaft directly from the gearbox and are called “internal”.

The other two are installed at the ends of the axle axles and transmit torque directly to the wheels, being called “external”.

This scheme allows the rotation of the wheels when turning and simultaneous (constant) operation of the car’s suspension, so we can simply say that the external drives are responsible for transmitting torque during turns, and the internal drives are responsible for the vertical movement of the wheel (hitting an obstacle, roll, etc.) .P.).

Possible causes of crunching

An experienced driver can by ear determine the location of a car malfunction. This quality comes with age. However, it is very difficult to confuse the crunch of a grenade with another sound. Let's figure out what a CV joint is. On the outside it is made in the form of a bowl, and on the inside the body has semicircular grooves. There are six of them.

In the internal space there is a spherical fist (clip) with 6 grooves and a splined connection for the axle shaft. Rotation occurs through the force that the cage transmits to the body through the balls located in the separator. The balls, moving along the grooves, change the angle between the axes.

  • low-quality or defective products, including counterfeit ones, have been identified;
  • low-quality lubricants are used or they are absent;
  • boot damage;
  • driving on bad roads or aggressive driving style.

Each part has its own production resource. And over time, play appears in the hinges. The rolling of the balls, now more free, produces a sound reminiscent of crunching. It may appear when turning, sharp acceleration, or overcoming obstacles.

There are 2 grenades installed on the drive wheels (internal and external): the first transmits rotation from the gearbox, the second - from the axle shaft to the wheel hub. Therefore, if an extraneous sound occurs, you need to determine which CV joint is making the sound (located on the left or right, inside or outside).

Types of CV joints

Before you begin repairs, you need to find out exactly how the unit is designed.

The pair of drives on the VAZ 2109 is equipped with a total of 4 CV joints.

CV joint type

Peculiarities

There are 2 of them. They transmit torque to the axle shaft from the gearbox

There are also two of them. Installed on the ends of the axle shafts and transmit torque directly to the wheels

This arrangement of grenades allows the wheels to rotate during turns and constant operation of the suspension system. To put it simply, the outer CV joints are responsible for transmitting torque when cornering, and the inner ones are responsible for the vertical movement of the wheels. These are collisions with bumps, holes, roll in turns, etc.

This service will not empty your pocket if you contact one of the DDCAR service stations. The cost of replacing a CV joint depends on the make and model of the car and whether the inner or outer joint needs to be replaced. It also consists of the number of standard hours spent on work.

DDCAR craftsmen have already replaced hundreds of hinges and done it well, which has earned them numerous positive reviews from customers. Using modern equipment, we will carry out this work in approximately 2-3 hours, the price will not go beyond reasonable limits (from 1,700 rubles). To find out how much it costs to replace a CV joint in Moscow on your specific model, call the number.

How to remove the drive

In order to remove the drive assembly, you need to perform the following steps:

  1. Completely unscrew the nut on the outer joint to free the hub.
  2. Remove the nuts from the bolts that secure the strut to the hub steering knuckle. This will allow you to move the hub to free the joint. But it will be much more efficient not to unscrew the nuts on the strut, but to disconnect the ball joint.
  3. If you unscrewed the ball joint, you need to remove the tie rod end pin from the hole in the strut knuckle. This is done using a special puller.
  4. Now you need to pull the outer joint out of the hole in the hub. How to do this depends on the situation. You can use a thin drift, but without fanaticism, so as not to damage the mechanisms. You should also not hit the CV joint axle with a hammer - this will cause the edges to flatten and make it impossible to remove the element.
  5. After you pull out the outer joint, you can proceed to the inner one - to remove it from the hole in the gearbox, just apply a few light blows with a small chisel. You can also use a mounting spatula.

That's all, now the drive has been completely removed, you also need to learn how to remove the CV joint on a VAZ-2109.

Causes and breakdowns

In reality, the resource of the CV joint turns out to be significantly less, which is caused by operating conditions, poor quality of roads, driving habits and other factors.

The CV joint is popularly called a “grenade,” which is due to the external similarity of the element to this explosive device.

Here's what you should know about grenade malfunctions:

  • Practice shows that the most common cause of CV joint failure is dirt, dust, and sand that enter the mechanism through a damaged boot;
  • Sometimes the problem of a non-functioning grenade can be solved by replacing the boot. This is possible if the CV joint itself has not yet worn out due to exposure to contamination;
  • If the damaged boot is not detected in time, the grenade will be completely worn out within literally 200 kilometers;
  • If the CV joint fails, a strong crunching sound appears when cornering and accelerating. Such a symptom indicates the need to urgently replace the CV joint;
  • The cost of new grenades is quite affordable; they are available at any auto parts store. But you should purchase those that meet the technical requirements of the VAZ 2109;
  • If you have at least a little experience in repairing cars yourself, it is quite possible to replace a grenade with your own hands.

Old and new element

Replacement frequency

It is hardly possible to name the exact mileage after which it is necessary to replace the 2114 grenade. In many ways, the service life of the elements depends on the following factors:

  1. Director. Domestic and European grenades last much longer than the Chinese ones that have flooded the market in recent years.
  2. Metal quality. The main thing is that the metal is hardened, otherwise production will happen very quickly.
  3. Driver's driving style. If you are used to an aggressive style, then you won’t envy the grenades, much less the whole car. The resource of elements decreases.

Replacement of outer and inner CV joints

The VAZ 2109, unlike its predecessors, has front-wheel drive. In its design, to transmit torque from the gearbox to the wheels, instead of a rear axle gearbox, the so-called CV joint (colloquially “Grenade”) is used. Since this mechanism is constantly in motion, its components quickly heat up. Therefore, to remove the temperature in the “grenade”, a special lubricant is used. And to ensure that dust does not fall on the part and the lubricant does not quickly become clogged, special boots are used - casings that protect the “grenade” from contamination.

By design, the car has two CV joints and two boots - external and internal. The external ones are installed on the hub, and the internal ones - in the gearbox mechanism. In general, this part is designed for quite a long service life, but, like all parts and mechanisms of a car, it may require repair or replacement. Read on to learn how to make the replacement yourself.

Symptoms and causes of failure

In order to determine without diagnostics whether the “grenade” is broken or not, you just need to listen to the car. If while driving, especially when turning, you hear a characteristic noise or knocking noise from the front wheel, then your “grenade” needs replacement. And it needs to be done as soon as possible, otherwise the consequences could be catastrophic.

In order to make sure that the “diagnosis” is correct, you can check the play on the drive shaft. Try to rock it a little with your hand, and the play will be immediately noticeable. When checking the boot, everything is much simpler. Turn the front wheel in any direction until it stops and inspect it for cracks or leaks. If they are, then both boots must be replaced.

Interior

Replacing the internal CV joint of a VAZ 2109 is carried out if the following parts and tools are available:

  • Vise;
  • A set of keys;
  • Hammer;
  • Jack.

Before replacing, all fasteners, and the CV joint itself, must be lubricated with a special lubricant. Next, carefully put the new part back onto the drive. To do this, use a hammer and a wooden block so as not to damage the part.

Next comes the installation of the boot. It must be installed at a distance of approximately 20 mm from the “grenade”. After installation, secure with clamps.

External

Replacing the outer CV joint of a VAZ 2109 is mainly done without removing the drive. To do this, the front wheels need to be jacked up and the front of the car placed on special supports. The wheels must be suspended so that the drive can rotate freely.

Next, unscrew the screws securing the wheel, remove it, and turn the steering wheel all the way in any direction. Disconnect the pivot pin from the splined end of the grenade. Unscrew the nuts securing the boot and remove it. Carefully knock out the inner CV joint from the gearbox, followed by the outer one. The drive must remain in place and locked.

Now, the CV joint can be replaced, or preventive maintenance can be done by washing it with gasoline. If damage is visible on it, then replacement is simply necessary. While replacing the internal grenade, insert a temporary plug into the gearbox hole, but do not secure it. After the replacement is completed, remove the internal “grenade” and install the external one in its place. Reassemble completely and insert the CV joint back.

After everything is in place, put the wheel back, and before driving, check the operation of the steering wheel. If the steering wheel turns normally, all the way, and is not accompanied by a crunching sound, then you have done everything correctly.

Methods for diagnosing CV joints

Grenade structure: 1 - body with outer clip; 2 - separator; 3 - inner race; 4 — balls (6 pcs.); 5 — drive shaft; 6 — retaining ring; 7 — corrugated cover; 8 — cover clamps

How to determine which grenade is damaged and needs to be replaced? There are several diagnostic methods.

  1. First, let's try to determine the crunch of the external grenade. The car is stationary. We pull the axle at the hinges one by one and listen. A knocking sound appears, which means there is play in the CV joint, which indicates that the grenade is damaged.
  2. Now let the car drive on a flat area. To install, what kind of grenade crunches, how to proceed, you need to turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, then do the same to the left. There was a crunch when you turned to the right, which means the right outer grenade is faulty, a crunch when turning left means the left outer grenade.
  3. If the internal grenade malfunctions, the question arises: which one, how to determine the failure? To do this, we choose a road surface with bumps and holes so that the wheel drops as low as possible, and drive the car straight. We listen to the sounds, alternately driving either the left or the right front wheel into the hole, and by ear we determine which grenade is crunching.
  4. Raise the car on a lift. Engage first gear so that the wheels can rotate while suspended. If the grenade malfunctions, you will hear a hinge crunch.

We found out what, how and in what place a grenade “clicks”. All that remains is to start replacing the damaged CV joint. This can be done at a car repair shop or you can carry out the repair yourself if you have the appropriate experience. There are three basic rules, when followed, the car’s drive will last a long time.

  1. Avoid jumping off.
  2. Do not accelerate by turning the steering wheel.
  3. Inspect the anthers periodically.

The CV joint wears out quickly under significant loads and dirt. Take care of your car.

Front-wheel drive cars have in their design such elements as constant velocity joints, or, in short, CV joints. On the VAZ-2109, replacing these elements is quite simple, but you will need a little experience and special tools. Without this, repairs are unlikely to be possible. It is also advisable to purchase new elements in advance - depending on what financial capabilities you have, you can buy complete drives or separate CV joints (they are also called grenades for their external resemblance to this weapon).

Types of auto parts

Various types of CV joints are sold. Among all the diversity, it is worth highlighting the following types:

  • Twin cardan joints (these are two cardan joints mated to each other).
  • Tripod (allow large axial movements).
  • Ball ones (are the most common).
  • Cam-disk (KrAZ-255B, Ural-4320).
  • Crackers (prone to overheating at high shaft rotation speeds, installed more often on cargo vehicles).

A grenade can also be:

  1. Internal (connects the axle shaft and gearbox).
  2. External (connects the wheel hub to the axle shaft).

Depending on the condition of the CV joint, you can purchase:

  • New.
  • Old, in working order.
  • Used, requiring replacement of individual components.

Different factories can produce grenades for the VAZ 2109. Based on this, parts are classified into two types:

According to the manufacturer, CV joints can be of the following brands:

Grenades for VAZ 2109 are sold at various sales points. Therefore, you can buy a car part:

What is a grenade?

A grenade is the colloquial name for a constant velocity joint that allows motion to be transmitted from the vehicle's gearbox to the wheels. Pay attention to the design of the car guide. Two rods extend from the gearbox, consisting of shafts and a differential, at the ends of which there are moving elements (CV joints). They allow movement to be transmitted to the lower wheels of the differential axle.

It is with the help of movable hinges that the front wheels can rotate. Indeed, this is a kind of cross that is installed on cardan shafts. But the grenade is much stronger and more durable. Why pomegranate? It’s just that this element is very similar to this bullet and nothing more. It consists of three parts: outer and inner races, with balls between them. A special lubricant is pressed inside.

Replacing a CV joint on a VAZ-2108 car

VAZ-2108 is the first car produced by AvtoVAZ, equipped with front-wheel drive. This type of drive has a less metal-intensive design, since the need to use a cardan transmission and a drive axle with a gearbox has completely disappeared.

The transmission of rotation from the gearbox to the drive wheels is carried out using two drive shafts. Since the drive on front-wheel drive cars operates in difficult conditions (they not only transmit rotation, but also do not interfere with the suspension to do its job, and also allow the wheels to turn), constant velocity joints (CV joints) are used in the drive device.

The installation of CV joints began to be performed on front-wheel drive cars. This is due to the fact that the use of a crosspiece in the cardan transmission, with four needle bearings, as in rear-wheel drive vehicles, does not ensure the required equality of the angular velocities of the shafts - driven and driven. When using such a device, it will be associated with an increase in the dimensions of the unit, the price of the product will increase, and the torque will be transmitted with a large pulsation, which will increase with an increase in the angle between the shafts.

It is greatly influenced by constant deformation, large amounts of abrasive and moisture. In addition, during repairs or long-term operation of the car, the boot may become damaged, and cracks may appear on the protective rubber, which will lead to failure of the element. The shaft leading to the CV joint may also be damaged.

In order to determine the structure of the CV joint, it can be disassembled. For this:

  • The hinge moves and is removed from the spline shaft.
  • Use a screwdriver to pry up and remove the plastic stop, as shown in the photo.

Removing the retaining ring

  • Using pliers, the separator with the cage and balls is removed.
  • Six balls are pulled out with a screwdriver.
  • The clip is disconnected from the separator.

If, after dismantling, all parts are in good condition, the assembly can be assembled by first putting 80 cm3 of lubricant into its cavity. Such a complex design of the internal CV joint on the VAZ 2109 shows how difficult it is to disassemble and repair it. And if dirt gets in and the protective cover is damaged, other parts of the CV joint may become unusable.

The component elements of the product are not interchangeable, so the best option for a VAZ 2109 car would be to replace the internal CV joint along with the boot (see How to replace the boot). Traces of grease visible on the joint body indicate a break in the boot. If oil leaks at the junction of the gearbox and the drive axle shaft, this indicates wear of the inner “grenade” oil seal, which requires replacement.

  • The hub nut is unscrewed.
  • You need to remove the wheel.
  • Unscrew the ball joint, which will free the strut from the lower arm.
  • To ensure free movement of the outer CV joint, the wheel must be moved to the side.
  • The outer grenade is knocked out of the wheel.
  • Both grenades are knocked out of the gearbox.

Carefully, to avoid damage, the drive shaft is clamped in a vice. The clamp that holds the boot on the body of the inner CV joint is released

A screwdriver is used for this. The boot is removed. It can be cut if further use of the element is impossible due to breakage. The old CV joint is knocked off the drive shaft using a special guide made of bronze. The CV joint and a new boot are put on the shaft.

  • The inside of the CV joint is generously lubricated with grease.
  • It is necessary to ensure that the direction of the drive and the seat of the product coincide.

How to replace the internal CV joint on a VAZ 2109 can be clearly seen in the video.

  • New retaining and thrust rings are installed.
  • After applying graphite lubricant to the joint splines, the drive shaft is placed in the gearbox housing.

Installation of the drive shaft in the gearbox

  • Fixing the shaft in the side gear.
  • Installing the unit into the wheel hub.
  • Final assembly is performed in the reverse order of disassembly.

There is practically no point in disassembling the hinge: if the cover is torn, the dirt that has got into the hinge has already rendered the CV joint parts unusable. Hinge parts cannot be replaced individually.

Signs of failure of the outer grenade (CV joint).

Most often, the outer CV joint of the VAZ-2109 is replaced, since its resource is approximately three times less than that of the internal one. But the repair algorithm is generally similar.

Even to install new boots, you will need to completely dismantle the drive - it’s much more convenient to work this way. To determine if grenades are damaged, you need to do the following:

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the left all the way.
  2. Drive away and listen for any extraneous sounds.
  3. Turn the steering wheel to the right all the way, then drive off again and listen to the sounds.

If a characteristic crunch appears, you need to change the grenade. It is useless to repair it - these elements cannot be restored. If both CV joints are faulty - internal and external, then it will be easier to install a new drive assembly. At least there won't be any problems knocking down old grenades.

Unlike other cars, it is especially difficult for the VAZ-2109 to keep the grenade boot in working condition for a long period. The main reasons for its failure, first of all, can be unfavorable climatic and external factors. As a result, cracks will form on the parts, and further operation will be impossible.

There are two options here:

  • signs that your grenade has already broken,
  • signs that the grenade will soon come out and break.

The hinge components are made of high-quality materials, and the working surfaces have high-quality processing. Therefore, VAZ-2108 CV joints can work for a significant period without any intervention or maintenance of the unit itself.

But there is one caveat - the reliability of the unit is maintained only if there is no contamination. The ingress of sand and dust, which are abrasives, intensively wear out the working surfaces, which leads to the destruction of the hinge.

The assembly is protected from contamination by anthers - special rubber elements, fixed on the shaft with a clamp on one side, and on the outer race on the other.

But the resource of the anther is limited. Due to constant contact with the external environment, the rubber “ages”, which leads to the formation of cracks through which sand and dirt penetrate into the unit.

Diagnostics of the drive comes down to inspecting the anthers. If even minor cracks are detected, an immediate replacement of the CV joint boot 2108 is required. Additionally, the element is washed and fresh lubricant is added.

A sign that a VAZ-2108 CV joint needs to be replaced is the appearance of a pronounced crunch and clicking sound when turning the steering wheel. With slight wear, third-party sounds appear only at the extreme positions of the steering wheel, but as wear progresses, a crunching sound appears at lower turning angles.

At the initial stages, you can still try to extend the service life by washing, adding lubricant and replacing the boot. But we note that if a crunch appears, it means that the working surfaces have already begun to wear out, and these procedures will only delay the replacement of the unit, but in the end it will have to be done.

First of all, when driving, there may be extraneous noise from the front. First you need to make sure that the CV joint boots are not torn and there are no cracks or oily marks on the surface. To check, just turn the steering wheel all the way and carry out a visual inspection behind the wheel.

Found any damage? Change the boot immediately so that stones, small particles, and water do not subsequently get into the CV joint mechanism. Otherwise, the hinge will quickly become unusable.

It is quite easy to determine the need to replace the hinge itself - during turning maneuvers the driver notices characteristic knocking noises. The presence of play during swinging of the drive shaft will help confirm this fact.

DIY grenade replacement

The CV joint (in common parlance a “grenade”) is the most important component of a car’s chassis, but its service life, like any other part, sooner or later ends. Naturally, timely replacement of the CV joint is a necessary procedure that can be entrusted to car service specialists, or you can try to do it yourself. Well, to be sure that it is the grenade that needs replacing, you just need to turn the steering wheel left and right. If, during such turns, a distinct crunch and crack is heard, then the unit is out of order, and the grenade needs to be replaced - there are no options. Watch the video below: “Replacing a grenade on a VAZ 2110, 2112, Kalina, Granta, Priora, 2109, 2114”

Why does a grenade fail?

As a rule, grenade failure occurs due to damage to its boot. A leaky boot allows dust and dirt to penetrate into the CV joint separator, which causes rapid wear of the joints. How to replace a CV joint boot

In addition, the time for the end of operation of a grenade, which has already completely exhausted its resource, may simply be approaching.

Another reason that leads to grenade failure is damage to the locking ring. Because of this damage, the axle shaft can partially fly out of the cage during sharp turns, gradually breaking the entire CV joint.

Grenade replacement process

To replace a grenade with a new unit, you will need the following tools and equipment:

  • Three socket heads (“13”, “17” and “30”);
  • One wrench (“17”);
  • One mounting blade;
  • A driver with a long handle;
  • Wheel bolt wrench.
  • Flat head screwdriver;
  • Mallet;
  • Jack;
  • New grenade;
  • New boot;
  • A set of new rings for the shaft.

REMOVAL OF AN OLD GRENADE:

  1. We tighten the handbrake;
  2. We lock the rear wheels with clamps;
  3. Using a screwdriver, remove the cap located above the hub nut and loosen it slightly;
  4. Using a jack, we lift the side of the car on which the CV joint will be replaced;
  5. We dismantle the wheel;
  6. Remove the thrust washer from the hub.
  7. Unscrew the fastening bolts holding the lower ball joint;
  8. Using a wrench, move the steering knuckle to remove the ball pin;
  9. We continue to shift the steering knuckle and the strut, and dismantle the splined component of the outer CV joint;
  10. We remove the clamps from the outer grenade (this is done by fixing the drive shaft).
  11. We remove or simply cut off the old boot;
  12. We knock the grenade out of its mounting location with the shaft using a drift.

Installation of a new grenade and boot is preceded by thorough lubrication of these parts. This procedure is done only with the help of a special graphite lubricant. The main thing here is not to overdo it, since excess lubrication can harm the elasticity of the boot, but for a grenade, abundant lubrication will only be beneficial.

INSTALLING A NEW GRENADE looks like this:

  1. We install a new boot;
  2. We put the rings on the shaft (in the reverse order of their removal);
  3. After thoroughly lubricating the grant, we join it with the shaft splines and hammer it onto it using a mallet;
  4. We fix the assembled structure with clamps;
  5. We mount the drive on its seat (first we screw the hub, then we install the ball pin, after which we tighten all the fastening bolts and nuts).

Outer

This arrangement of grenades allows the wheels to rotate during turns and constant operation of the suspension system. To put it simply, the outer CV joints are responsible for transmitting torque when cornering, and the inner ones are responsible for the vertical movement of the wheels. These are collisions with bumps, holes, roll in turns, etc.

Interior

Before starting work, you should find out which CV joint has failed. Replacing an internal element is noticeably different from a similar procedure regarding an external one.

As noted above, by changing the anthers in a timely manner, in most cases it is possible to avoid the need to install new grenades. If the moment is not missed, then it will be enough to remove the hinges, and then:

  • wash in gasoline;
  • lubricate;
  • return to place.

However, if the problem was detected late, then the CV joints will probably have to be changed.

The procedure is as follows:

  • set the car to the handbrake and additionally place stoppers under the wheels;
  • slightly lift the car with a jack and remove the wheel;
  • Use a socket wrench to unscrew the nut from the hub (sometimes you will need to hit it several times with a pry bar to get it out of place);
  • disconnect the ball joint (held from below with two 17 mm bolts);
  • pull out the steering tip from the rack;
  • turn the steering wheel so that the old joint can come out without difficulty;
  • use a hammer to knock the CV joint bushing out of the hub;
  • just cut the old boot and remove it;
  • remove the inside of the grenade (if it has fallen out) from the drive using a pry bar;
  • Pull the boot, helping it into place with a thin screwdriver, and bend it onto the drive so that it does not interfere;
  • place the retaining ring from the new hinge onto the drive (there is a special groove at its end);
  • squeeze half a packet of lubricant into the grenade (included in the kit);
  • screw the old nut onto the bushing of the assembly (it will protect the thread from damage);
  • With several strong blows, place the CV joint on the drive until it stops;
  • place the remaining lubricant at the base of the boot;
  • pull the rubber band onto the CV joint;
  • press the boot with one hand and rotate the grenade with the other so that the lubricant spreads throughout the part;
  • secure the outer and inner edges of the rubber protection with metal clamps (not included in the kit);
  • unscrew the old nut;
  • return the hub to its place;
  • screw the ball joint;
  • install the wheel.

Removing the drive, replacing the boot, CV joint

Next, we will consider how to replace the outer CV joint, and this will be a simplified version that does not require complete removal of the drive shaft.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  • We put the car on the inspection hole, because it will be easier to do everything on it. We immobilize it with anti-recoil supports;
  • Immediately use a 30mm socket with a wrench to loosen the hub nut (drive mount). While the car is not jacked up, this is easier to do than when the wheel is removed. It is difficult to remove the nut because it is cored, so you will need to extend the wrench with a pipe;
  • We jack up the required wheel and remove it from the car;
  • Unscrew the fastening bolts of the ball joint of the lower arm to the wheel hub;
  • Use a puller to press out the tie rod end;
  • Completely unscrew the drive shaft mounting nut;
  • We take the brake disc with our hands and pull the shock absorber strut towards us, pulling the hub from the end of the outer CV joint;

And then we carry out work to replace the boot or hinge. This is where you should climb under the car. To remove the outer CV joint 2108, first disconnect the boot clamps (you can simply bite or cut them). We cut off the boot with a knife (even if it is whole, it is better to replace it with a new one).

Wipe the hinge with a rag to remove grease. We take the attachment, rest it against the end of the CV joint from the shaft side and strike it with a hammer. Moreover, they should not be strong, since it is only necessary to knock the inner race off the retaining ring mounted on the shaft.

If you plan to replace the boot, you should first wash the joint in kerosene to wash out all the dirt from it.

We are starting renovations

So, the first thing you need to do is dismantle the old grenade. By the way, before changing the boot on the VAZ-2109 grenade, the same manipulations are performed. The thing is that it can only be replaced after the removal has been carried out.

Without this, installing a new boot simply won’t work. You will need to perform the following manipulations:

  1. On the side to be repaired, loosen the wheel fastening.
  2. Using a drift, you need to straighten the edges of the nut.
  3. Place chocks under the rear wheels to prevent the car from rolling away.
  4. Use a 30mm wrench to remove the nut.
  5. Raise the side of the car that is being repaired with a jack, remove the wheel, and place the car on a support.
  6. Completely unscrew the nut from the grenade. Please note that the washer is used when installing a new grenade - do not lose it!
  7. Drain the gearbox oil.
  8. Remove the two bolts that secure the ball joint to the suspension arm. Check the condition of the hinge - if it is deplorable, you will have to change it.
  9. You will most likely have to pull the pin out of the steering knuckle. The tip may interfere with the removal of the grenade.
  10. Now that everything is ready, you can pull the hub along with the strut to release the CV joint.

CV joints in a VAZ 2109 car

After front-wheel drive cars began to be produced, the question arose about effectively ensuring equality of angular velocities of the shafts - driving and driven. Further use of a crosspiece with four needle bearings in the cardan drive led to an increase in the dimensions of the unit, the price of the structure increased, and the torque began to be transmitted with great vibration; the greater the angle between the shafts, the stronger it was. Initially, the intended service life of CV joints is similar to the service life of a car, but after the start of operation it was revealed that wear still exists and the outer part of the unit wears out more. The use of a moisture- and frost-resistant material with good flexibility for the manufacture of the CV joint boot made it possible to protect the CV joints from rapid wear. But, nevertheless, the action of external factors, such as moisture, abrasive, constant deformations lead to a limitation of the service life of CV joints. In addition, there is a possibility that during operation and repair the boot may be damaged. Cracks may form on the protective rubber band, which is unacceptable for normal operation of the unit. The defect of the shaft and its curvature are less noticeable to the naked eye, but the use of the part in the future is unacceptable. Therefore, it is periodically necessary to monitor the condition of the outer CV joint on a VAZ 2109 vehicle, and, if necessary, carry out its timely repair or replacement.

Checking the condition of the CV joint

To carry out diagnostics it is necessary to use several methods. After all, you need to determine whether the VAZ-2109 CV joint needs to be replaced. The very first is the appearance of a crunch when cornering. As a rule, this is a sign that the outer hinge is very worn and requires replacement. In addition, a similar crunching noise may occur when reversing. This is not fatal, but it is also not very pleasant, since you have to forget about a comfortable ride.

The main thing when diagnosing is not to confuse the symptoms with those that occur when certain suspension elements break down. For example, when moving in a straight line, only heavily worn joints will crunch. The most common cause of such sounds is the ball joint. A more detailed picture can be obtained if the car is placed on a lift and the entire suspension is suspended. In this position, you can determine what kind of play the hinge has, and whether there is a knock in the ball joint. In addition, this position is most convenient when replacing the outer CV joint of a VAZ-2109.

You can talk endlessly about how to change joints correctly, what lubricant to use, which manufacturer you should trust. In fact, the most suitable components are those whose manufacturers supply them to the AvtoVAZ plant. When replacing the external CV joint of a VAZ-2109, preference should be given to the manufacturer who supplies them to the plant. Where does the repair begin?

First, you need to drive the car onto a viewing hole or overpass, place safety chocks under the wheels and secure the hand brake. After this, unscrew the drain plug on the gearbox housing and drain the oil (a good reason to replace it) into a suitable container.

Removing the wheel and lower support

Before lifting the front of the car, you should remove the wheel bolts, since this will be quite problematic after lifting. Next, using a jack, raise one side or the entire front of the car.

Attention! Do not forget to place a reliable support under the body.

After this, unscrew the bolts and remove the wheel. Now you can begin dismantling the hub. To do this, carefully remove the protective cap with a screwdriver, unscrew the nut and remove the lock washer. To prevent the hub from turning, it is necessary to push the brake pedal all the way down and secure it with a block or get an assistant to do this.

Removing the support is quite simple: using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the two mounting bolts. It is recommended to use a spanner or socket wrench rather than an open-end wrench. Since the bolts can become very rusty during operation, you should use a “Vedashka”. After 5-10 minutes of treatment, they will turn away quite easily.

How to increase service life?

Sufficiently high-quality grenades can last 30-60 thousand km. In some cases, the resource increases by 2-3 times. To do this you need to follow these rules:

  1. Do not stress the elements - sudden accelerations and decelerations increase wear.
  2. Monitor the condition of the anthers - if they break, dust and water will get into the hinge. This will destroy the metal.

If you change the boots in a timely manner and apply new lubricant, the grenades can last much longer. It is worth paying attention to the fact that the elements installed at the manufacturer are of much better quality than those sold in stores.

Therefore, if you are lucky enough to become the first and only owner of a nine, just check the condition of the anthers and replace them in a timely manner.
