If you install a 54 throttle on a VAZ 2114, according to the manufacturers of such components, this makes it possible to increase the performance and power of the engine by reducing the air flow speed and better combustion of the fuel mixture. In reality, everything turns out to be not so rosy. The survey shows that only 12% of owners of the 14th VAZ saw positive changes in engine performance. 20% observed deterioration. What is the catch and how to properly install a wider throttle so that it really increases the performance of the car and improves its acceleration?
What is a throttle?
The part is used in creating an electrical circuit to prevent heating and overload. The inductor delays the influence of the current, while sudden changes are eliminated due to the law of self-induction. This creates additional tension.
The throttle consists of only 4 elements:
- wire, which is fixed in insulation;
- core, the material for it is selected based on the use of the device;
- potting mass, which includes substances that are resistant to combustion, thus providing additional insulation;
- housing, it is made of heat-resistant material.
An electronic choke is similar to an iron transformer, but differs in winding. The core is made of steel, and the plates are arranged so that they do not touch each other. The inductance reaches 1H, the coil limits sudden current surges in the circuit. If the level decreases, the part maintains it at a minimum level, and if it increases strongly, the throttle in the device limits the jump. The element is also used for smoothing, separating certain areas of the circuit, storing energy and eliminating interference.
Understanding what a choke is, it is worth clarifying that it is mainly installed to collect energy and delay the current in a selected range. Some types of fluorescent lamps are unable to work without such a part. This applies to street lamps and home lamps. The choke in contact with them acts as a limiter that transfers the electrodes to the lamp.
Mechanisms created on this principle generate voltage, which is necessary to obtain a discharge. After this, the lamp lights up. The process proceeds so quickly that voltage is created in just a few fractions of a second; without the part, stable operation and switching on of the item is impossible.
How to install a wider throttle body?
So, to install a throttle with a larger diameter, you will need:
- disassemble the carburetor;
- remove the old 46 mm damper;
- put a new one at 54, 56 or 52 mm;
- manually bore (cut) the gasket;
- Reassemble everything by lubricating the gasket with automotive sealant (usually red or gray).
Or you can simply replace the gasket with a new one, taking it from the LPG system under 2110; these are sold in almost every automotive parts store and are cheap. But everything will be aligned, smooth and without burrs or oil leakage.
But a 56 mm damper is not recommended. It greatly reduces the speed of air flow, causing insufficient oxygen to enter the cylinder to burn fuel. The 56 mm damper will only be relevant in cars with a gas cylinder equipment system. The throttle itself is installed using a similar method - removing the old one and installing a new one.
And again, the increase only from such a modification in the operation of the car will not give a fundamental change in power. It is better to perform the installation in combination with other methods of tuning an internal combustion engine. Installation on the Priora will not bring any changes, because they already use a 16-valve system. That is, the fuel mixture burns perfectly without unnecessary modifications. A larger diameter throttle valve is simply a waste of money and time for installation work. It is better to modify the factory firmware installed on the on-board computer, and also install a “spider” - there will be more advantages with approximately the same expenses.
It does not matter what type of inductor itself will be used. The main thing is not the cheapest one, which is made of low-quality steel - it wears out quickly and bends (the highest load is generated at the moment the ignition is turned on).
There is another option - to install a two-throttle valve on the VAZ.
Naturally, along with them you will also need a primary factory receiver with an increased diameter (you can do it yourself by modifying the old one, or you can purchase a new one, already prepared for installation). This will actually give the 2114 an increase of about 15-20% in power. Fuel consumption will remain virtually unchanged. In addition to traction, acceleration and idling will also improve (it will stop stalling, even if the engine is cold). But such modifications should already be installed in a workshop. You can purchase all the necessary components, and then deliver them to any auto repair shop for a fee. Installation here is complicated by the fact that you will have to slightly modify the standard mount.
Operation
The electrically conductive coil that limits the ferromagnetic core operates on the principle of self-induction. Upon closer examination of the device, it becomes clear that it functions as an electrical transformer, but is equipped with an additional winding. The core is specially insulated so that additional interference is not created in the electronics.
The coil has high inductance, but the entire mechanism is considered low frequency. The current fluctuation range is from 20 to 100 kHz. According to this criterion, chokes are divided into low, ultrasonic and ultra-high. The latter do not have a core; instead, a regular resistor or plastic frame is used.
What modifications can be made to complement the installation of a wider throttle body?
If possible, you should install modified firmware of the on-board computer, where the ignition start time will be reduced, and the automatic adjustment of the damper will be increased to a more open position when certain engine speeds are reached. You can also install a 16-valve system, like on the Priora. Then it will be possible to regulate the moment of spark supply and opening of the valves for exhaust. These are additional chip tuning capabilities (modifications by changing and upgrading the software of the electronic control unit). And also, if possible, it is better to test the damper in 52 mm, 56, 50. Auto repair shops are sure to have these, and the tests will take at most 20 minutes.
So, installing a new damper is not difficult. But simply replacing it will practically not change anything in the operation of the engine. However, if you expand the receiver and, in general, the entire intake to a wider one, this will already be a major modernization of the engine. Not only the power will increase, but also the speed of acceleration and smoothness when changing gears.
Device
The transformer choke has the form of a conductor that is wound in a spiral. Depending on the scope of use, it is made single- or multi-core. Sometimes a dielectric frame is added to the device or the part is left without it. Some elements additionally use a base with a round, square or rectangular cross-section.
The part consists of many turns; during creation, progressive or universal winding is used. When using the first type, they change smoothly along the entire length, while the second type - the distance between the turns remains the same.
Progressive winding is used in electrical engineering when it is necessary to construct a high-frequency device. To achieve the result, it is necessary to reduce the parasitic capacitance. Winding is carried out in one or several layers; only copper is suitable as a material, since it acts as a conductor.
To increase the inductance, a ferromagnetic core is used. Depending on the application, different types of material are used, since some of them are suitable for suppressing strong interference, while others are used for filtering sound. When throttling of mechanisms at ultra-high frequencies is required, brass is mainly used.
During production, the manufacturer takes into account the required inductance, current carrying capabilities and induction features, since otherwise saturation will occur. First, the size of the gap, the number of turns and the current strength are determined, and then the diameter of the wire is calculated. In small machines or electronic devices, the inductor is made flat, then the conductor is arranged in a circle or zigzag.
Before training, fulfill the following conditions:
- Warm up the engine. The engine temperature is 70-95 degrees, otherwise it won’t learn (this is hard to catch!). The coolant temperature should be 70-99 degrees, about 72* in the cooling system already gives 90* on the dashboard
- Warm up the gearbox, drive for 10 minutes. The radiator fan should not work.
- After warming up, turn off the engine for at least 10 seconds.
- Battery voltage is more than 12.9V (with the engine not running);
- Selector in P or N (automatic transmission).
- Electrical loads are turned off (air conditioning, headlights, heated rear window, cars with “Eurolight” - turn on the dimensions )
- Steering wheel in neutral (zero) position;
- Vehicle in a nearly horizontal position
Kinds
Choke transformers are produced in two variations:
- Low frequency. They are almost no different from an iron transformer, they just have one additional winding. The coil is a stabilizer, so when the current decreases, it maintains the required level, and when it increases, it reduces it to normal levels.
- High frequency. More common due to its stable, long-lasting performance. They use a core made of steel or ferrite; cheap analogues use plastic. When working with long or medium waves, sectional winding is used.
Parts with cores take up less space and are therefore suitable for small-sized devices.
Elements are also classified according to their purpose:
- To start engines. It is used as a limiter for starting and braking current. Sometimes the part is replaced with a three-phase transformer because it performs the same functions.
- For saturation. Installed in converters or stabilizing devices. Suitable for magnetic amplifiers because the core changes resistance.
- For smoothing. Installed to eliminate sharp ripples, often found in tube amplifiers.
In addition, there are models that operate on secondary pulse sources. To do this, the device first accumulates energy in its field and then transfers it into a load.
Symptoms of DZ malfunction
The throttle mechanism quickly becomes dirty due to the fact that it is located in direct contact with combustion products. Plus, during the operation of the car, natural contamination of the internal protection occurs with various inclusions that enter through the filter membrane. Dust and dirt reduce the movement of the damper, the thermal gap decreases, and in turn the channel capacity decreases.
You can understand that the throttle valve needs cleaning by the following signs:
- During frosts, starting the VAZ-2114 engine is very problematic, and when starting the engine you can’t hear the smell of exhaust gases. In a closed room you can often hear the strong smell of gasoline.
- Due to the lack of air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders, vibration occurs when the power unit is started, and at low speeds the vehicle jerks.
- There is no smoothness when releasing the gas pedal and when switching from high to low speeds.
If similar symptoms of a malfunction begin to appear, then it is likely that the throttle mechanism has reached its critical level of contamination and requires prompt cleaning.
Throttle designation on the diagram
Such details are always depicted according to a single principle, so it is enough to understand it once in order to then regularly read such diagrams. In this case, the number of semicircles can be chosen almost arbitrarily; more often it is 3 or 4 units for convenient pairing with other elements. The winding leads are directed in one or different directions, it all depends on the configuration of the circuit. If you need to depict a bend, then draw joints of semicircles next to each other, without putting a dot between them.
There is also color marking of parts that corresponds to inductance values. The first few marks indicate inductance values in µH. The third is the multiplier, and the last is the available tolerance. Chokes are marked using 3 or 4 stripes, sometimes they are changed to dots. If there are three marks on a part, the default tolerance is 20%.
Chokes are used not only in different types of light bulbs, but also during the assembly of switching power supplies, in which they act as a filter. In electrical circuits it is more often called a reactor, but the principle of the device remains the same. The part is also put into welding machines and used for industrial purposes.
What does a big throttle do?
The factory throttle valve in the VAZ 2114 has a diameter of 46 mm. This is the best option for ensuring proper air flow passing through the carburetor and blowing the finished fuel mixture (atomized gasoline with air) into the cylinder, where it is burned.
If the throttle valve is larger in diameter, then in theory it will produce air flow at a lower speed.
Due to this, combustion in the cylinder should occur more thoroughly and less fumes will be released. In reality, it turns out that this is not entirely true. The power practically does not increase, because the amount of fuel and air entering the carburetor is the same.
That is, if you undertake such a modification, you will have to modernize the entire intake tract of the VAZ 2114, starting from the air inlet pipe and ending with the nozzle and the carburetor itself, the fuel mixture injection system into the cavity of the cylinder block. In this case, productivity will indeed increase by almost 30-40%, but at the same time fuel consumption will also increase (by about 15%). Should this modification be made? The decision remains with the car owner.
