The module for controlling internal combustion engine parameters on any car (VAZ 2114 as an example) requires a lot of data for processing. For example, to correctly formulate the composition of the fuel-air mixture, the following information is required:
- ambient temperature;
- engine temperature;
- the volume of air passing through the intake manifold;
- oxygen saturation of air flow;
- vehicle speed;
- degree of opening of the throttle curtain.
The VAZ 2114 throttle sensor is responsible for the last point. It determines how open the channel for fresh air entering the intake manifold is. When the driver presses the gas, the throttle assembly opens.

TPS on VAZ 2114: signs of malfunction, checking operation and procedure for replacing the sensor
The VAZ 2114 “nines” that appeared after modernization are equipped with an injection engine. To ensure stable operation of such a motor, a large number of automatic devices are installed; they independently control and regulate the uninterrupted operation of absolutely all systems of the power unit.
Disassembled throttle position sensor
The principle of regulating the supply of gasoline to the engine has been radically changed. Previously, it was mechanical, but now the fuel supply is controlled electronically. The mechanical connection of the gas pedal with the throttle valve is eliminated. To adjust the idle speed, the damper itself moves.
Fuel supply and consumption are controlled by a control unit, which receives signals from sensors from different engine systems. One of them is the throttle position sensor, or TPS, as mechanics call it for short.
Throttle sensor diagnostics
You can perform diagnostics yourself without calling technical assistance for help. Testing the effectiveness of the 2114 throttle sensor requires a voltmeter and two insulated wires. Next, the block with wires from the TPS is released, the “plus” on the voltmeter is connected with a wire marked “A” on the block. “Minus” - with a car body.
Turn the key to “ignition” and look at the voltmeter reading:
- a value close to zero or “zero” means that the TPS is in good condition and you need to look for the cause in the electrical circuit or in the electronic engine control unit.
- voltage reading is close to 5V - faulty sensor.
The cause of a part malfunction may be corrosion or incomplete closure of the damper. Before changing the TPS on a VAZ 2114, there is an option to check the mobility of the damper (it is possible that due to microcracks, the dynamics at the tip disappear).
Mechanism of action of the equipment
The TPS works like a potentiometer.
- Each output of the mechanism has its own channel - a 5V electrical signal goes to one contact, the other is connected to ground, the third is connected to the controller. When the gate is turned, the voltage from the current collector slider to a specific output changes.
- With the ignition on, you can check it with a special device by installing probes on the input contacts of the unit. When the throttle shield is closed, the readings will be in the range of 0.5 - 0.7 V. When open - up to 4V.
- The VAZ 2114 throttle valve is in contact with the idle air control mechanism. When the shutter is closed, the IAC comes into operation, and the engine is filled with additional air, bypassing the TPS.
You can check the performance of the valve sensor by measuring the resistance - with an ohmmeter. If the mechanism is working properly, the indicators should be zero.
Setting the throttle position sensor
Now it's time to configure the sensor. With the throttle open, we try to turn the device drive or pull the accelerator cable. If it doesn’t work, it means the sensor was installed incorrectly. We remove it again and mount it at a right angle to the damper axis. It is adjusted manually. Often the controller's memory retains the same data that does not allow the valve to open completely. Then you need to disconnect the battery terminals for a while or reset the settings on the on-board computer.
After the above actions, if the valve is open by at least one degree, then the TPS must be replaced. This will be the best decision.
Replacement is performed with the engine turned off. It is necessary to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and the sensor clamp. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the two screws that secure the sensor to the throttle. The sensor has been removed.
Make sure that the throttle valve is closed. Don’t forget about the O-ring; as a rule, the “new” spare part comes with it. We put the ring on the throttle pipe, do not forget to remove the old one, tighten it with screws until it seals. All that remains is to connect the connector and secure it with a latch. To reset the old sensor parameters to the ECU, disconnect the battery terminals.
Device
1 - Shaft;
2 - Housing; 3 - Connector; 4 - Contacts; 5 - Resistor; 6 - Ring; 7 — Spring stopper; 8 - Spring; 9 - Cover; This component of the system is a fairly simple electrical resistor, which changes the resistance when the axis is rotated.
The sensor is located on the damper shaft and, when it opens, performs the function of turning together with the damper. Due to the fact that the design is quite primitive and unreliable, the sensor often fails, resulting in certain problems with the formation of the fuel mixture. So, in most cases, the problem is the rubbing of the tracks, but the possibility of other problems with the condition of the resistor cannot be ruled out.
Coolant temperature sensor (DTOZH)
The coolant temperature sensor is installed in the thermostat housing and is used to turn the engine cooling fan on and off. It should be noted that turning on the fan is not the only task of this sensor. DTOZH adjusts the fuel mixture to maintain higher engine speeds when warming up, that is, if the coolant in the car is below operating temperature, the sensor will give readings about the enrichment of the fuel mixture to warm up the engine faster.
Signs of a malfunction of the TPS
If the VAZ 2110 DPS is broken, the following signs of its breakdown appear on the car:
- Increased speed XX;
- Spontaneous increase in speed when starting up to 2500 rpm;
- The car stalls on its own when you release the gas pedal;
- Fuel consumption increases;
- Engine power is lost;
- Starting the engine becomes more difficult;
TPS: malfunctions
Like any other part, the throttle position sensor tends to fail. In this case, you need to know the main symptoms of its breakdown. So, what are the signs of a malfunction in the TPS?
First of all, you should pay attention to the engine's idle speed. If its speed “floats”, this may indicate that the sensor is not working properly. Also, a symptom of its malfunction may be the engine stopping when the gas pedal is suddenly released. The malfunction of the sensor is very noticeable when accelerating the car. In this case, there may be failures when accelerating (it seems as if no fuel is entering the engine at all). Sometimes when driving, the car may not respond to the gas pedal. In addition, the engine speed may freeze at 1.5-3 thousand and not drop even when the gear is off and idling. That is, signs of malfunction of this element are directly related to the operation of the engine, and any incorrect operation may indicate a malfunction of the sensor or damper. If you notice at least one similar symptom, then you need to check the performance of the TPS. VAZ-2114 “Samara” and its successors are diagnosed almost identically. Therefore, the instructions outlined below can be used on all domestic (and even foreign) cars.
Throttle Position Sensor Repair
You have decided to repair this sensor, for example, to fill a microcrack in one of the contacts with conductive glue. Theoretically, this is doable, but if the problem is in the resistive layer, then it is impossible to restore it.
One of the options for extending the life of the unit is cleaning and flushing. Gasoline, WD40, and carburetor cleaning fluid are used for operation. Cleaning dirt from the outside is not difficult. But the assembly itself, its internal part, with its contaminated channels remains untouched. Therefore, it is necessary to completely disassemble and wash the part.
It is recommended to carry out this procedure periodically. Using cleaning sprays, a Phillips screwdriver, a throttle gasket (for a 1.5-liter engine), O-rings for the receiver (for a 1.6-liter engine), and keys, perform the following steps:
- We completely dismantle the module - remove the corrugation and the pipe channel from the filter. It is recommended to drain the antifreeze
- pull out the adsorber with the pipe (remove the fasteners of the unit, disconnect the cable from the accelerator, thereby removing the throttle valve)
- Having removed the unit, we disassemble it into components, first the meters - TPS and IAC. We clean it using WD40 or its equivalent, wash the damper on all sides, blow out the holes so that no moisture remains, and assemble the assembly in the sequence, but in reverse.
This is not at all difficult to do if there are no problems with disassembly. Gaskets and rings are replaced with “new” ones.
Location and principle of operation of the element
All cars of the “tenth” family with an injector, including the latest VAZ 2115 models, are equipped with a variety of sensors. They are located at various points and are busy measuring various parameters, transmitting data in the form of electrical impulses to the processor that controls the operation of the engine. The location of the meters depends on their purpose, so the VAZ 2110 throttle position sensor is not difficult to find; it is located in the same block as it. The same element is installed in the Lada Priora car.
Replacement
In fact, changing this sensor is insanely easy. So don't rush to send your car to a service station. Everything can be done with your own hands, the quality will not suffer from this.
- To remove the throttle position sensor, you first need to find it.
- As we have already noted, the desired unit is located on the side of the throttle pipe on the throttle valve axis.
- Having found the element, pick up a shaped screwdriver.
- Using this simple tool, unscrew a couple of bolts that hold the device.
- Pay special attention to the gasket that is available under the old regulator. We do not recommend using it again; it is better to immediately buy a new one. Often the gasket is already included with the throttle sensor itself.
- After removing the old sensor, you can slightly clean the place where it is installed if there is dirt there.
- Next, a new sensor is installed along with a new foam gasket and the bolts are tightened.
- Try to tighten the fasteners as far as possible, otherwise the new throttle sensor will quickly lose its effectiveness. The work will have to be done again.
- There is no need to make any adjustments after replacement.
- The zero mark on the controller will determine that the throttle is completely closed.
