Compared to the sedan, the five-door of the twelfth model turned out to be almost 10 cm shorter, but solely due to the shortening of the rear overhang. The exterior of the car can be described in one word: archaic. True, if you are buying a budget car, and not a new one at that, this factor fades into the background. Moreover, even here there are some possibilities in terms of tuning: enlarged wheel arches allow you to safely ride on 15-inch tires. A hood with two shock absorbers is another innovative solution for the domestic automobile industry.
But there are also obvious design flaws - the radiator is partially located behind the air intake, which makes it vulnerable to stones.
The profile view has hints of sportiness and looks much more attractive than the front of the hatchback. At the rear, the only highlight is the taillights that run the entire length of the stern. But this, as they say, is a fact that has already become history. If at the beginning of its career the VAZ 2112 could pass for a foreign car, today such a comparison is clearly not enough to attract a buyer.
The Priora hatchback appeared only in 2010, three years after the sedan was released. At first it was a three-door version, a five-door version appeared a year later. If you believe the manufacturer's data, over one and a half hundred new parts were used when developing the exterior, which allowed the car to be similar to the 2112 except from the side. The rear and front end turned out to be really new and look more fresh and modern.
In particular, a teardrop-shaped head optics appeared at the front, a chrome trim appeared on the radiator grille, and the air intake at the bottom received a different shape and design. The rear of the Priora is notable for the presence of lights with LED components, as well as a bumper with a plastic insert in its lower part.
In a word, there is a difference in appearance, it is not too big, but not in favor of the Lada 2112.

There is no need to talk about any compliance of the interior of the twelfth model with current standards, but it makes sense to talk about the ergonomics of the internal space. Alas, in this regard there are few reasons for optimism. One of them is the ability to adjust the steering wheel angle. But due to the lack of space in the driver’s legs, the distance between the pedals is quite small. So there is a high risk that when you press the brake pedal, you will also engage the accelerator, and vice versa. To improve aerodynamics, a rear wing is standardly installed on the car. It is unlikely that it will save much fuel, but visibility deteriorates quite noticeably, so many car owners decide to dismantle this element.
The VAZ 2112 torpedo partially resembles the front panel of the V8, but here the plastic is worse, but the arrangement of the instruments is more thoughtful. True, the steering wheel is located in such a way that it can overlap some control keys (turning on the foglights, buttons for turning on the lights and heating the rear window).
The door cards, unlike the Priora, have fabric upholstery. There is not enough legroom for rear passengers, but the sofa itself is quite comfortable, and the ceiling is not low either.
There is nothing special to say about the trunk of the 12th model: 350 liters for a hatchback is a completely satisfactory figure, which can be increased to 7840 liters with the seats folded (they can be lowered in a 2:1 ratio). Traditionally for the tenth family, the car has a low seating position, which makes boarding somewhat more difficult, especially for summer passengers.
The Priora's interior looks much more modern. It is distinguished by a more convenient location of control buttons, a developed central console, and a successful profile of the front seats, which could be called ideal if they did not have weak lateral support. But as for the quality of the finishing materials, it clearly let us down, and the plastic here is even tougher than that of the VAZ 2112. At the back, the situation is about the same - a quite comfortable sofa and a lack of legroom.

The trunk of the five-door Lada Priora is slightly more spacious - 360 liters, but here it is also possible to fold the back of the rear sofa. In this case, 705 liters will fit in the back. That is almost twice as much.
In a word, if you are not particularly picky about design, then the question of which is better, the interior of the VAZ 2112 or Priora, should not particularly bother you, but from the point of view of ergonomics and practicality, the advantage is still on the side of the latter model.
Engines and transmissions
Since the VAZ 2112 is a continuation of the tenth family, the same power units were installed here. These were mainly four-cylinder engines, starting with carburetor 73-horsepower one and a half liter engines. The engines were gradually modernized, sixteen-cylinder injection versions with a volume of 1.5-1.6 liters and a power of 79-89 horsepower appeared.
Among the innovations of the new range of engines, it is worth noting the use of four valves per cylinder, as well as the appearance of a second camshaft - this made it possible to increase the volume of fuel assemblies supplied to the combustion chamber and ensure high-quality and faster removal of exhaust gases. Moreover, such engines turned out to be more economical than eight-valve ones.
Along with the power units, the five-speed gearbox also evolved, which on 2112 was one of the best.
Since the start of production of Lada Priora falls on the period when there was a year left before the VAZ 2112 was discontinued. It is not surprising that this model was equipped with more advanced engines - 1.6-liter with eight- and sixteen-valve heads. Their peculiarity is the appearance of a receiver that more accurately regulates the air supply to the cylinders. Controllability and safety
You cannot expect from a car representing the domestic auto industry the driving characteristics of premium sedans and SUVs, but for our conditions, the suspension of the 2112 family, like its factory counterparts (nine and Samara), is adapted quite well. However, the turning angle of all ten, including the hatchback, is too large, and even without power steering, maneuvering at low speeds will not give you much pleasure. As for safety, there is nothing to say here at all - there are no active systems, and the visibility of the VAZ 2112 suffers due to the presence of a spoiler and rather wide side window frames.

Sometimes while driving a Priora you feel the urge to rev the engine and press the pedal to the floor. Not every car with such volume could compete with Priora. Comparison: Ergonomics and safety of Priora and Kalina
Regarding safety, the domestic automobile industry has always had serious problems. Actually, according to EuroNCAP, it’s impossible to choose which is better than Kalina or Priora - both cars failed the tests.
According to the standard rating table, 21127 scored 1 star, and the version after restyling 2.5 points out of 5 possible, which does not even reach “acceptable”. The “tuned” version of the ten or Priora received a mark of 3, a little better, but still far from ideal.

With Priora the situation is worse. In general, the VAZ 2170 is a redesigned version of the dozen, which negatively affects the interior decoration and design as a whole. Outdated panels, wide gaps, in some places the torpedo joints do not meet or are not combined correctly.
Facts about Lada Priora that you didn't know
At the end of July 2015, we visited the Priora production site, made sure that the latest Renault-Nissan standards had reached it, and conducted a survey of our readers - is it necessary to continue producing the Lada Priora? Answers to the question “to be or not to be” were split almost exactly down the middle, but with a slight bias towards “to be.” Reflecting on the results obtained, we remembered the history of this car - in ten short paragraphs.
Fact No. 1
The first prototype of the Lada 2170 was presented in August 2003 at the Moscow Motor Show. Even then, this concept clearly resembled the current Priora, except that a number of exterior details had not yet been worked out. But the car went into production only 3 and a half years later, in March 2007 - the plant was busy launching another model, which was also slow to reach the assembly line and only reached November 2004 - Lada Kalina. By the way, compared to the Kalina (not to mention the ancestor of the Priora, the “ten”) the Lada Priora project was implemented quite quickly.

Lada Priora did not get its name right away. The sedan shown in 2003 appeared only under the index 2170, and the name “Priora” appeared only on the hatchback, which was shown, like the sedan, at the Moscow Motor Show, but a year later - in 2004. A year later, the station wagon concept was presented. At the start of sales, the entire family of new cars was called Lada Priora. The name has not had and does not have an official decoding or translation into Russian (except for the self-evident connotation with “priority”), some sources interpret it as “primacy,” and a popular online translator somewhat unexpectedly translates this word from Italian as ... “abbess.”

Lada Priora is a deep modernization of the VAZ-2110 (or Lada 110) family, which went into production in 1996. On the way from the “ten” to the Priora, engineers made about 1000 changes to the design; At that time, AVTOVAZ was introducing computer design methods, “testing” new technologies on the Lada Kalina project, and the accumulated experience was very useful at Priora.

Sales of the Lada Priora sedan (VAZ-2170) began in April 2007. The first to go on sale was the “Norma” package with a driver’s airbag, front windows and electric power steering. The first batch of goods was sent to dealers in advance, and they sold it completely on the first day of sales.

At the very start of production, Priora had only one engine - a 1.6-liter, 16-valve, producing 98 hp. A year and a half later, in September 2008, a more budget version of the car appeared - they began installing 82-horsepower eight-valve engines on the Priora. At first there was also only one gearbox - a 5-speed manual, which was subsequently modernized. Now the Priora engine line consists of two “16-valve” engines (98 and 106 hp), and there are also two transmission options - manual transmission or robotic AMT.

On the first Priors, the door handles were like on the “tens” - to open the door, you had to lift the handle. Priora acquired the now more common “pull” handles only in February 2008. At the same time, it became known that Priora and Kalina would be the first production Ladas to receive air conditioning. In May 2008, the first Lada Priora with air conditioning went on sale. But with a standard audio system - only a couple of years later, in April 2010. But the ABS system and parking sensors appeared on the Priora much earlier - in October 2007 and February 2008, respectively.

After the launch of the new model, cars of the Priora and Lada 110 families were produced in parallel for some time, but Priora quickly supplanted its predecessor model: in March 2007, the Priora sedan, VAZ-2170, was launched, in February 2008, the VAZ-2172 hatchback, and in May 2009 – station wagon VAZ-2171. Later, small-scale modifications were also produced - the extended Priora Premier, the three-door Priora Coupe and the sporty Priora TMS.

The Priora developers were faced with the task of bringing the car to a new level in terms of passive and active safety. And it was a success - in comparison with previous AVTOVAZ models, it was an unconditional step forward. It is impossible, however, not to remember that the Lada Priora reached 3 Euro NCAP stars while already being a production car - in October 2008, after the introduction of a number of body improvements that increased passive safety. Plus, there were airbags (one in simple configurations, two in luxury, and later side airbags in the front seats) and belts with a pretensioning mechanism. Priora received several important elements for active safety - ABS, parking sensors, light and rain sensors...
Fact No. 9
It so happened that Priora, as if thanks to the name, in some moments really became the first for AVTOVAZ. The first Lada with an airbag as standard, the first Lada to successfully pass international pedestrian safety tests, the first Lada with an AMT robotic gearbox.
A sedan with a black roof is already a reality, and the other body types in the special version are still our fantasy. We conducted a survey on which Priora with a black roof would be the most in demand - the first place was practically shared by the sedan and the station wagon.
