Overview and functionality of sensors installed on the Lada Granta Liftback

Electronic engine control unit (ECU)

The ECU is responsible for the entire operation of the engine; it is in this block that the processes of calculating the fuel mixture, supplying a spark to the desired cylinder, and much more take place. Sensors installed in the car are directly connected to the ECU. Each sensor reads the readings and transmits them to the internal combustion engine control unit. Failure of the ECU makes it impossible to operate the vehicle.

Reviews

Positive
1.Vladimir: for a year and a half of Grant’s operation, there were no problems with the performance of the sensors. Everything is in good condition.
2.Kirill: I corrected the contact on the mass air flow sensor once. The reason is not the meter, I just caught the block with the wires with my hand while replacing the air filter. No complaints, the quality is good.
3.Vasily: in two years of using Granta, I replaced the antifreeze temperature meter once. In all other respects, no comments, satisfied with the quality.
4.Gregory: after buying the car from the dealership, I checked all the terminals and wires myself. Some tightened up, now the machine works like a watch.
5.Vyacheslav: I have no complaints, the car is three years old, I haven’t made any investments. I believe that systematic inspection helps prevent large-scale breakdowns.
6.Vladimir: The electronic control unit is working properly, there are no comments. Digital sensors transmit information in a timely and complete manner.
Negative
1.Alexander: I can’t speak positively about the factory devices, since I replaced three of them in two years. They fly like air.
2.Ignat: no matter what I do, the fuel sensor incorrectly displays information about the amount of gasoline. I'll buy another one.
3.Ivan: the manufacturing quality of digital equipment is poor, it breaks down every six months.

Conclusion Despite the negative reviews about the digital sensors on the Lada Granta Liftback, their manufacturing quality is decent. Subject to systematic technical inspection and careful handling of the machine, the service life exceeds the warranty period.

Premature wear of digital equipment can be caused by a short circuit in the circuit, damage to the cable insulation layer and other factors. However, this does not indicate defectiveness and poor manufacturing quality of the scanners.

To ensure the normal operation of all vehicle components, modern cars use many different regulators. In this article we will talk in more detail about domestic Lada cars. Where is the speed sensor, coolant and other controllers on the Lada Granta and what functions do they perform - read below.

Knock sensor

The knock sensor of the Lada Granta is responsible for detecting detonations in the engine during its uneven operation. Engine detonation can be caused by poor quality fuel with a low octane number, which will lead to uneven operation of the internal combustion engine. The sensor detects detonation in the engine and transmits readings to the ECU, which in turn changes the engine operating parameters to dampen detonations. Located between cylinders 2 and 3.

Symptoms of malfunction:

  • Knock of “fingers” under load;
  • Increased fuel consumption;

Recommendations for selecting sensors

In order not to delay the repair time due to the purchase of low-quality spare parts, service station technicians recommend purchasing only original parts.

When choosing a component manufacturer, always give preference to factory parts. Check the index matches carefully. An exhaustive list is provided in the operating instructions.

Buy analogues less often, even if they are more expensive than the “originals”. Do not use the services of dubious suppliers who sell spare parts at unusually low prices. If you do not have personal experience in servicing a technical device, install the components at a service center, where they provide a quality guarantee for the work performed.

Coolant temperature sensor

The DTOZH in Grant is located in the thermostat block and serves to read the coolant temperature. The sensor is also responsible for the operation of the engine cooling fan and for the presence of warm-up engine speed. When starting the engine, you will notice that if the DTO is in good working order, the speed is slightly higher than the working idle speed; as soon as the internal combustion engine warms up, the speed returns to normal.

Symptoms of malfunction:

  • There are no increased speeds to warm up the internal combustion engine;
  • The engine cooling fan does not work;

Replacement

If you have the skills to handle simple tools, then replacing a damaged device with a new sensor will not be difficult. Before starting work, you need to make sure that the engine is cold, the car is located on a level surface on the handbrake and with the negative terminal removed from the battery. After this proceed as follows:

  1. Remove the contact chip with the cable from the head of the DTOZh connector.
  2. Drain part (about ½ liter) of the coolant into a suitable container by unscrewing the bolt at the bottom of the engine block.
  3. Use an open-end wrench to “19” to unscrew the old meter.
  4. Install a new sensor and insert the contact chip into the DTOZH connector.
  5. Antifreeze is added to the expansion tank to the required level.
  6. The terminal is returned to its place on the battery.

With some skill, draining the coolant will not be necessary. If you quickly press the hole with your finger and then just as quickly insert and turn the new controller 1-2 turns, the loss of antifreeze will amount to a few drops. This will eliminate the “tedious” operation of draining and then adding antifreeze.

A guarantee against troubles on the road will be caution when choosing a new coolant temperature sensor. You need to purchase devices only from branded, trusted manufacturers. If the car is more than 2 years old or the mileage is already 20 thousand km, then a spare DVT in the trunk of the Lada Grant will not be superfluous.

Mass air flow sensor

The mass air flow sensor is designed to count the air sucked into the engine to adjust the fuel mixture. The readings from the sensor are sent to the ECU. This sensor is one of the most expensive on Grant. It is installed on the air filter housing and secured with two 6mm bolts.

Symptoms of malfunction:

  • High fuel consumption;
  • Uneven engine operation;
  • Floating XX;

Functionality check

To check the functionality of the controller, you need to remove it (see how to do this below) and prepare the following:

  • sensor cleaned of dust and dirt;
  • digital multimeter;
  • thermocouple with sensor or thermometer;
  • open container for boiling water.

Multimeter:

Check procedure

The DTOZH check is carried out as follows.

  1. The dishes with water are placed on the stove and the gas burner is lit or the electric stove is turned on.
  2. The multimeter is set to voltmeter mode. One probe makes contact with “0” of the meter. The second probe is connected to another terminal of the sensor.
  3. The controller is lowered into the container so that only its tip is in the water.
  4. During the process of heating water, changes in temperature and the value of the sensor resistance are recorded.

The data obtained is compared with the indicators in the following table:

Water temperature in the container, °CSensor resistance, kOhm
09.4
105.7
203.5
302.2
351.8
401.5
500.97
600.67
700.47
800.33
900.24
1000.17

If the readings differ from the tabulated data, this means that the coolant temperature sensor must be replaced, since such devices cannot be repaired. If the readings are correct, you need to look further for the causes of the malfunction.

Oil pressure sensor

Oil pressure is a very important factor in engine operation; if it is lost, oil will not rise to the top of the engine, which will lead to loss of lubrication of rubbing parts. To indicate and notify the driver of a loss of oil pressure in the engine, an oil pressure sensor is used to indicate a malfunction. The sensor is installed on the cylinder head on the right side.

Symptoms of malfunction:

  • The oil pressure lamp does not light up when the ignition is turned on;

Clutch and brake sensors Lada Granta

Thanks to the signals sent by these sensors, the controller receives information about whether the corresponding pedals (clutch and brake) are pressed or not pressed. Both elements are located in the area of the pedal assembly.

The clutch sensor is a stabilizer, which from a design point of view is a limit switch. Its failure will lead to surges in speed and unstable operation of the engine. The car owner will be informed about the breakdown by the illuminated Check Engine; in addition, problems will appear with sudden jumps in speed during gear shifts.

The above is evidence of the following malfunctions:

  • the height of the pedal is incorrectly positioned relative to the floor;
  • clutch sensor is faulty;
  • there are disturbances in the circuit.

They also began installing brake pedal sensors on Grants. However, many owners of this car, after only using it for a short time, notice error P0504, indicating a breakdown of this sensor. In most of these cases, the above error occurs due to incorrect adjustment of the element. For this reason, car owners report symptoms such as:

  • unstable engine operation;
  • instability of speed.

Functionally, the brake pedal sensor is responsible for the position of the pedal itself and turning off the brake lights. In addition to its misalignment, problems with this part can be caused by a breakdown of the spring located inside the sensor.

The presence of a malfunction will be confirmed to the owner by the illuminated Check Engine and the already mentioned error P0504. This error is a consequence of a breakdown of either the sensor itself or its wiring. In addition, the cause of the error is often the misalignment already mentioned above. The new element will cost the car enthusiast approximately 180 rubles.

Oxygen sensor

This sensor is located in the exhaust pipe near the outlet manifold. Designed to capture exhaust gas vapors and determine the quality of the fuel mixture. If there is a large amount of gasoline in the vapor, then the fuel mixture becomes leaner and vice versa.

Symptoms of malfunction:

  • Loss of power and vehicle dynamics;
  • Black smoke from the chimney;
  • High fuel consumption;

Description of the Lada Granta instrument panel

Hello everyone dear friends.

Today we will look at a detailed description of the instrument cluster in the instrument panel of a Lada Granta car.

This article will be useful to those who have just purchased this car and have not yet had time to study the designations and icons in the instrument cluster. It is imperative to monitor the dashboard readings, as it signals possible malfunctions, a kind of main driver’s assistant.

1. Speedometer, shows how fast the car is currently moving

2. Tachometer, shows the speed of the engine crankshaft, the red scale zone indicates a dangerous operating mode for the engine

3. Liquid crystal display of the on-board computer, displays information from the BC

Crankshaft position sensor

DPKV is used to read readings from the crankshaft pulley. This is necessary so that the ECU can understand what position the pistons are currently in and which cylinder needs to be supplied with fuel by opening the injector. A sensor failure makes it impossible to start the engine. The sensor is located near the crankshaft pulley, slightly below the oil filter.

Symptoms of malfunction:

  • The internal combustion engine does not start;

Where is the crankshaft sensor located in Grant?

The device is located next to the oil filter in the left, rear part of the car engine. More precisely, on the generator drive pulley.

Functionality check

  • destruction of electrical wiring due to corrosion;
  • break, short circuit of the DPKV coil winding.

Main symptoms of a malfunction:

  • problems with starting the engine (including inability to start);
  • stalling motor after it reaches operating temperature;
  • unstable operation of the internal combustion engine, its detonation and loss of power.

How to identify a faulty DS?

The speed sensor is based on the following simple principle:

  1. The gear wheel of the transmission unit has a special mark that generates impulses through the DS during the rotational movement of the wheel.
  2. The speed of movement of the Lada Granta car is currently recorded by the frequency of the read pulses.
  3. As the speed increases, the pulse frequency increases.
  4. The information is supplied directly by the speed sensor, like from some others, and is displayed on the dashboard.

Due to the unfortunate location of the sensor in question, where is it located? Low and close to the road surface, it becomes subject to dirt and moisture. This causes it to malfunction.

If an element fails, the following factors may indicate this:

  • the arrow on the speedometer is located at zero or the device operates periodically;
  • the engine runs intermittently at idle;
  • the readings on the speedometer do not correspond to the actual speed;
  • fuel consumption increases;
  • engine thrust decreases.

Here you should pay more attention to the correct identification of this malfunction, since similar symptoms (unstable engine operation during idle and increased fuel consumption) may be present with a faulty LADA Granta oxygen sensor. Let us remind you that the Lada Grant has two lambda probes. One is the control one (in front of the catalyst), the second is the diagnostic one (behind the converter). The functions of the first include monitoring and adjusting the composition of the air-fuel mixture, and the second is necessary to register the presence of oxygen in the exhaust gas.

Tidy reset

To perform the procedure, you should scroll the shield regulator until the dial is reset to zero. If you need to perform a full reset of the panel, you need to disconnect power from the battery for 15 minutes and reconnect the wires.

The Grants panel is quite advanced and easy to understand for the driver. The indicators are intuitive, making it easier for novice drivers to learn.
