The Lada Granta is a budget front-wheel drive car that was developed on the basis of the Lada Kalina. Sales of the car began at the end of December 2011. Currently, 5 types of engines are installed on Lada Granta/Kalina 2:

And this is just in the trunk; I can imagine how much it will be possible to load into the Granta Universal when it comes off the assembly line. We can already say that the Lada Granta Sedan fits into the trunk even more than the Kalina Universal, although in height, of course, the Kalina has an advantage over the Granta.
I recently had to test my Grant a little for the carrying capacity and behavior of the car on the road at maximum load. There were 4 sugars in the trunk, that’s 200 kg, and + 4 more people in the car. With such a load, I drove 300 km on not the best roads in Russia, and I can say that the Granta’s suspension coped with this task with dignity, not a single knock during the entire trip, and there were no breakdowns in the suspension either. And a loaded car goes along the highway much more pleasantly and softly than an empty one. On the contrary, when traveling lightly, the suspension seems simply terribly stiff to Grant, and the car rides like a stake on the road. But Grantu’s very large trunk also has its drawbacks, for example, the huge trunk lid, due to its size, closes very poorly, and the sound when closing is not very pleasant, one might even say it’s a roar. The trunk of the Lada Granta opens with a button from the interior and has an electric lock. But this lock also has its drawbacks: If you open the trunk and it remains open for more than 3-5 minutes, the lock will work automatically, and you can close the trunk only after pressing the button in the cabin again.
Most likely, it was for this reason that when Prime Minister Vladimir Putin tried to close the trunk, he failed. But, let's hope that in the future, the designers will make changes and refine some components and parts of the Lada Granta.
By the mid-2000s, old VAZ models - the classic Zhiguli and the updated Samara family - were hopelessly outdated and required urgent replacement with a new car. Other models, Kalina and Priora, were good, but poorly suited to the role of a truly budget car. Therefore, the plant began to develop such a car, taking as a basis the rather successful design of the Kalina, which resulted in the Lada Granta sedan, which entered the assembly line in 2011. The car immediately became a bestseller, and huge queues formed at car dealerships. Over the 4 years of production, the car was regularly modernized, receiving new gearboxes, a “Sport” version with a more powerful engine, a “liftback” body option, an updated appearance, etc. Today we will tell you in detail about the Lada Granta family, the technical component of these cars, equipment and prices.
Characteristics of the Lada Granta interior
The interior is typical for a budget car. The gray plastic of the dashboard doesn't even try to seem soft. There is nothing superfluous on the dashboard - a speedometer, a tachometer, a scattering of pentagrams and a trip computer screen. It is simple and informative. The same can be said about the “twists” who manage the operation of the stove and air conditioner. The only thing that stands out on the front panel is the screen of the multimedia system equipped with a touchpad. It has good performance, but mediocre brightness: when exposed to sunlight, it becomes impossible to read data from the screen.

But the rear passengers have practically nothing except seats and a roof over their heads - no ashtray, no USB connector, no niches in the rear doors where they could put anything, only pockets on the backs of the front seats. However, this is normal for a budget car.

The entire Lada Granta family is class B in size. If we talk about the sedan, the length of the Lada Granta sedan is 4.26 m, the width reaches 1.7 m, and the height is 1.5 m. The liftback has a length even smaller - 4.246 m, height and width remained unchanged. The wheelbase of both cars is the same: 2.476 m. The front track of the car is larger than the rear: 1.43 m versus 1.414 m. The clearance of the Lada Granta when fully loaded reaches 16 cm. As for the curb weight, it is 1.075 tons (for the liftback - 1.085 t.), and the total is 1.56 t. for both cars.
Naturally, the trunk volume of Lada Grants also varies. Oddly enough, the sedan has more - 480 hp, which is 40 hp. more liftback indicators. However, everything changes if you fold the seats: then the volume increases to 760 liters. All cars in the family are front-wheel drive, with a transverse engine. The steering is a classic rack and pinion design. The front suspension is independent, made according to the MacPherson pattern. The rear design is simpler - spring, semi-independent. The front brakes are disc brakes, with ventilation, and the rear brakes are traditional for budget VAZs - drum brakes. The gas tank of all cars is the same - 50 liters.
Lada Granta - engine specifications, fuel consumption
The engine line of the Lada Granta family includes 5 power units. All of them run on gasoline and have a working volume of 1.6 liters. 2 of them have the old 8 valve design, all the others have 4 valves per cylinder.
The first engine has a power of only 82 hp. and a torque of 132 Nm. Naturally, the dynamics of a car with such an engine are far from impressive: acceleration to “hundreds” takes 12.6 seconds, and you won’t be able to go more than 165 km/h. In mixed mode, fuel consumption per 100 km of the Lada Granta is 7.4 liters.
The second motor is 5 hp more powerful than the first. (87 “horses”). Its torque reaches 140 Nm. This has little effect on the dynamic characteristics: acceleration to 100 km/h takes 12.4 seconds, and the “maximum speed” is almost the same – 167 km/h. Gasoline consumption is exactly 7 liters. per 100 km. ways.
The third engine boasts a power of 98 hp. and a torque of 145 Nm. With it, the car reaches “hundreds” much more vigorously, spending 11.4 seconds, and the maximum speed increases to 172 km/h. The “appetite” of this unit is very moderate: only 6.8 liters. in mixed mode.
The fourth engine is a modernized version of the third. Thanks to some changes in the design (primarily, a different connecting rod and piston group), it already produces 106 “horses” and the torque reaches 148 Nm. With this engine, Granta reaches 100 km/h in 10.9 s. and can accelerate to 183 km/h. The unit consumes only 6.7 liters. per 100 km.
The fifth power unit is installed only on the Granta Sport. The motor generates 118 hp. and 154 Nm of torque, as a result of which the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.5 s. and demonstrates a top speed of 197 km/h. Fuel consumption is higher than other engines: this unit will require 7.8 liters. gasoline per 100 km.
It should be noted that the above dynamics data is valid for a sedan car equipped with a manual transmission. As for fuel consumption, we mean mixed mode. The parameters of cars with other gearboxes and/or with a liftback body differ slightly.
Transmission Features
To date, the Lada Granta family is equipped with 3 types of gearboxes. Firstly, it is a 5-speed manual transmission with cable drive. Secondly, it is a robotic transmission created on the basis of a manual transmission with the same number of gears. And thirdly, a licensed automatic transmission “Jatco” with 4 steps. Of course, “robot” and “automatic” are not installed in all trim levels. However, more on this below.
Body characteristics of Lada Granta
VAZ pays close attention to the long-standing problems of domestic cars - low corrosion resistance of the body.
