Excellent reliability, amazing engine life, despite their age. You won’t be able to install engines from the latest versions of these German cars, because then you’ll have to redo literally everything. But engines from the 90s will take your VAZ 2109 on board very well

Another example of the excellent German quality of the engine that can be installed on the nine. Replacing a motor is a complex operation that requires the participation of an experienced specialist. It is strongly not recommended to change the engine yourself in a garage environment.

There are several important, interesting and simply useful factors that must be taken into account when making a decision regarding replacing the engine on a VAZ 2109.

  • Re-registration. Decide for yourself whether you will register the converted car with the traffic police. Experts advise contacting the appropriate authority so that you can get a new motor. This way you can avoid many problems and misunderstandings on the roads when an inspector stops you.

The best options for installing an alternative engine from foreign cars

Now that the prelude is over, we can consider in more detail the question of which engines are suitable for the VAZ-2114. Of course, first of all, let's discard SUVs and sports cars. Secondly, when choosing the ideal alternative, it is necessary to understand the design features of the car, as well as the needs.

The main advantage of the solution: the engine can be installed almost new, while from foreign cars you will get ones that are already well-worn. For more modern models (VAZ 2108-2170), it will be necessary to cut the body and think through the fastenings, although even here there will not be so much hassle.

Niva 1.7 will give good power. Only here you need to be careful and install the new engine with the original oil pump and sump: in the Niva they hang lower, and when installed on a “penny” there is a high probability of snags.

Motor VAZ-21126

from Lada Priora is also a good solution. With a volume of 1.6 liters. and a power of 98 horses, the VAZ 2101 will run like a young one.

It’s especially nice that you don’t have to change the box - all gearboxes can be easily connected to the new engine.

Modification of VAZ 21114

This type of device is almost identical to the 2111 in terms of design, but has an increased volume to 1600 cm³ and a power of 81 hp. The engines are very good down low, with good thrust, but the throttle response isn't as sharp as the 1.5-litre version. This is due to the “fragmented” euro norms.

This type of internal combustion engine does not bend the valve, so you don't have to worry about the belt breaking, although you don't have to recognize it again. It should also be noted that this type is equipped with phased injection, respectively, with phase sensors installed in the cylinder

Motors from foreign cars

If you want to install an engine from a foreign car, get ready for a more labor-intensive process and the need for additional modifications.

The most popular engine in terms of cost-effectiveness is the Fiat Argenta 2.0i. Approximately 60% of VAZ 2101 owners replaced the factory engine with a unit of this particular model. Nothing surprising: the “penny” is almost completely copied from it, so there are fewer problems with installation. Another thing is that the engine will clearly not be new, produced between 1966 and 1984, which is unlikely to please.

We can also recommend BMW M10 engines (volume from 1.6 to 1.8 liters) or M40 of the same capacity. Extreme sports enthusiasts also bet on the BMW M20

, but its power is rather high, which requires modification of the racks and replacement of the axles. In the proposed options, you will only need to digest the flywheel.

Craftsmen praise the replacement of the standard engine with an engine from Renault Logan and Mitsubishi Galant. True, in both cases the box will have to be taken from the same models.

We really approve of the engine with Volkswagen 2.0i 2E

, however, buying it (and even converting it for it) is no longer very budget-friendly. A successful and not too troublesome task would be to install an engine with a Lancia Thema - also a very popular engine among owners of “kopeck” cars. So the choice regarding which engine can be installed on the VAZ 2101 is quite wide. The main thing is to plan on your efforts to modernize the associated components, so that the restoration process does not take too long and is not too expensive.

Engine tuning

The procedure is not complicated and does not require a long wait for the work to be completed. Mechanical boring and electronic finishing are carried out. Many owners prefer to only chip the engine.
