Thermostat for VAZ 2107 carburetor which is better. Auto systems

In any power unit, the cooling system performs one of the most important functions. When the engine overheats, very disastrous and sometimes irreparable consequences arise - from the combustion of the cylinder head gasket to the deformation of the head itself. But in both cases, repairs will cost you a pretty penny.

Even when the car operates in less aggressive temperature conditions, but still at a level below acceptable levels, it will have a detrimental effect on many resources, and in winter it will also result in a cold interior.

That is why correct and stable operation of car cooling is very important. One of the devices that guarantees optimal operation of the cooling system is the thermostat. This relatively small unit monitors and adjusts the temperature of the antifreeze in the cooling system.

The main function and principle of operation of the thermostat on the VAZ 2107

The main task of the thermostat is to prevent the engine temperature from going beyond the specified limits. If the engine heats up above 90°C, the device switches to a special mode that helps cool the engine.

All thermostats on the VAZ 2107 are equipped with three pipes

If the temperature drops below 70°C, the device switches to the second operating mode, which promotes rapid heating of engine parts.

How does a thermostat work?

The “seven” thermostat is a small cylinder, three pipes extend from it, to which tubes with antifreeze are connected. An inlet tube is connected to the bottom of the thermostat, through which antifreeze from the main radiator enters the device. The antifreeze goes through the tube at the top of the device to the S7 engine, into the cooling jacket.

The central element of the thermostat is the valve

When the driver starts the engine after a long period of inactivity, the valve in the thermostat is in the closed position, so that antifreeze can only circulate in the engine jacket, but cannot enter the main radiator. This is necessary in order to warm up the engine as quickly as possible. And the motor, in turn, will quickly heat up the antifreeze circulating in its jacket. When the antifreeze warms up to a temperature of 90°C, the thermostat valve opens and the antifreeze begins to flow into the main radiator, where it is cooled and sent back to the engine jacket. This is a large circle of antifreeze circulation. And the mode in which antifreeze does not enter the radiator is called a small circulation circle.

Thermostat location

The thermostat on the “seven” is located under the hood, next to the car’s battery. In order to get to the thermostat, the battery will have to be removed, since the shelf on which the battery is installed does not allow you to reach the thermostat pipes. All this is shown in the picture below: the red arrow indicates the thermostat, the blue arrow indicates the battery shelf.

The red arrow shows the thermostat mounted on the pipes. The blue arrow shows the battery shelf

The purpose of the thermostat VAZ 2107 injector

The device is a heat-sensitive valve that rearranges the flow of antifreeze in a small circle; circulation occurs in the cylinder block or in a large circle (circulation through a radiator-heat exchanger depending on the coolant temperature). The thermostat is supplied with pipes from the water pump, power unit, and radiator.

When the engine and, accordingly, the coolant are in a cold, unheated state, the thermostat will remain in the closed position. In this state, the cooling composition will flow from the pump to the cylinder block, past the radiator of the cooling system, and the coolant located inside the radiator will not take part in cooling the engine.

The operating temperature of the VAZ 2107 injector engine is 80–95C, and the opening temperature of the VAZ 2107 thermostat is 80-90C. When the cooler is heated to this temperature, the temperature-sensitive element will begin to increase, thereby affecting the valve shut-off plate. During this process, a certain volume of coolant already begins to move in a wider circle, already flowing through the heat exchanger. As the heating figure increases, the thermostat valve begins to open more and more, directing an increased amount of coolant through the heat exchanger, which will affect the cooling intensity of the engine. When the degree of heating drops, the opposite effect will take place - the liquid will follow a small “route”.

Depending on the mode in which the power unit operates, the temperature level of the air, the speed of the car, that is, the force of air flow on the heat exchanger and the internal combustion engine, the coolant temperature varies, and accordingly, the degree of valve opening changes. Through this maneuver, the functional temperature of the engine is maintained.

Thermostats designed for the “seventh” VAZ model do not differ in design, depending on the type of internal combustion engine (injection or carburetor) - no... This part is a solid cylindrical body with a thermal valve in the inner part.

What do they have in common?
A thermostat in the meaning of “independent device”, designed to maintain a stable ambient temperature, is a thermostat
The thermostat in the meaning of “hardware module” is included in any thermostat (refrigerator, air conditioner)
What is the difference between them?
The term "thermostat" may be used to refer to a single piece of hardware rather than a complete deviceThe term “thermostat” in most cases is used to designate a complete, independent device that includes a thermostat (with the exception of a thermostat included in non-climatic equipment, such as car cooling systems)
In the meaning of “independent device” it can be used to control the ambient temperature according to a schedule or in relation to air humidityNot designed to control temperature according to a schedule or in relation to air humidity - used only to maintain a given level

To replace the thermostat on VAZ 2106 cars, you need to drain some of the coolant by unscrewing the drain plug on the cylinder block. It is also necessary to remove the battery, which will interfere with our ability to carry out repairs to replace the thermostat. Next, loosen the clamps securing the hoses to the thermostat and disconnect the hoses, then remove the thermostat.

After removing the thermostat, it must be checked for functionality; to do this, lower it into a container with water heated to 78-80 degrees and, with constant stirring, continue to heat the water to 87-90 degrees. The thermostat valve should slowly begin to open; if this does not happen, the thermostat must be replaced.

What is needed for replacement

Before installing a grant thermostat on a VAZ 2114, you should purchase all the necessary parts and materials.

These include:

  • the actual thermostat for Grant (to avoid mistakes, you can write down its catalog number - 21900-1306010-00);
  • new thermostat gasket;
  • a pair of M8 studs 85 mm long;
  • lower radiator hose for Grant;
  • tee for coolant return flow;
  • clamps of the appropriate size;
  • sealant (necessarily heat-resistant).

In addition to all of the above, it is recommended to purchase new coolant and replace it in the entire system after making the upgrade. This operation is not mandatory, but highly desirable.

Adviсe.

  1. When you drain the coolant, it is better not to open the expansion tank cap right away. In this case, the liquid will flow slowly due to the vacuum created.
  2. When you unscrew the plug on the block, slowly unscrew the tank cap.
  3. In order not to get rid of air in the pipe after filling the liquid, you can remove the thin hose supplying coolant to the carburetor, located in the rear part. Fill in the coolant, watch when it flows out of the hose. This will indicate that the air has escaped; this is the highest point of the coolant in the car.

Malfunctions and testing of the VAZ-2107 thermostat

Malfunctions:

  • does not open at all or opens partially - leads to engine overheating;
  • does not close - the engine heats up slowly after a cold start, the engine does not reach operating temperature.

To find out the functionality of the thermostat, you should check at what temperature its main valve begins to open, as well as the stroke of this unit. Since the thermostat itself is mounted in a non-separable housing, this can only be done accurately using special equipment (for example, the BS-106.000 stand).

The simplest check of the VAZ-2107 thermostat can be performed directly on the car by touch.

In the case of a working thermostat, after starting a cold engine, the lower radiator tank should not heat up immediately, but when the arrow on the coolant temperature gauge is 3–4 mm from the red scale zone, which corresponds to 80–85 °C.

If the radiator starts to heat up immediately, this means that the thermostat is not closing

. If later, its valve gets stuck. An overheating engine can be evidence of insufficient valve travel when it does not open completely. In all cases, the thermostat must be replaced.

Removal

Attention! The thermostat should only be removed when the engine has cooled down.

1. Place the car on an inspection hole or overpass (see “Preparing the car for maintenance and repair”).

2. Drain the coolant (see “Coolant - checking the level and replacing”).

3. Using round-nose pliers or a slotted screwdriver with a thin blade, loosen the band clamp securing the hose coming from the radiator.

4. Disconnect the hose from the thermostat inlet pipe.

On cars of recent years of production, the hoses are fastened to the thermostat pipes with band clamps, and to the coolant pump and the cylinder head pipe - with worm clamps. In this case, it is more convenient to loosen the worm clamps and remove the thermostat along with the hoses.

8 mm socket wrench

or use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamps securing the hoses to the pipes of the coolant pump and the cylinder head.

6. Remove the thermostat and disconnect the hoses from the pipes.

To check the thermostat, place it in a heat-resistant container with water. We heat the water and use a thermometer to control the temperature at which the main valve begins to open. If this temperature is not in the range of 80.6-81.5°C, the thermostat must be replaced.

Malfunctions

The thermostat valve is the main component in the thermostat. It is the cause of the malfunction of this part of the VAZ 2107 car.

  1. The valve does not open when heated. This leads to engine overheating and coolant boiling.
  2. The valve does not close tightly. As a result, the engine takes a very long time to heat up or overheats.

The valve may fail for the following reasons:

  1. The appearance of plaque and scale in the seat.
  2. Sticking in the seat when left idle for a long time.
  3. If the spring fails, it may lose its elasticity and rot when using ordinary water. The spring can also affect the accuracy of the valve entry into the seat. Misalignment leads to loose closure.

In most cases, the thermostat fails when using hard water instead of antifreeze. Also just when the operating time is reached.

Replacement

Replacing the thermostat on a VAZ 2107 is very simple. The main thing is not to confuse the location and fastening of the pipes. To replace you need:

  1. Allow the coolant to cool.
  2. Drain the antifreeze into a container, not forgetting the safety rules.
  3. Loosen all fastening clamps with a screwdriver. For tape fastenings you will need a special puller key.
  4. Remove the thermostat.
  5. Replace the thermostat with a new one.
  6. Replacing the VAZ 2107 thermostat is carried out in the reverse order.

Replacement is carried out only with original components. Important! Do not operate the vehicle with an empty thermostat. This will lead to an increase in warm-up time and fuel consumption for warm-up.

Important points

When replacing a thermostat, there are a couple of important nuances that cannot be ignored. Here they are:

  • on the latest models of “sevens” (cars 2010 and older), the clamps on the thermostat are not worm-type, but band-type. This means that you won’t be able to remove them with a regular flat-head screwdriver, and to remove them you will have to use a special clamp wrench, which not every car owner has in their garage. If the car owner is the “happy” owner of a thermostat with band clamps, then there is only one way out: go to the store for a tool. A clamp wrench costs about 300 rubles;

    A special wrench is required to remove band clamps

  • Even after draining the antifreeze from the system, personal protective equipment must not be neglected. Please remember: you cannot completely drain the coolant from the machine. Some part of this liquid will still remain in the thermostat pipes and in the thermostat itself. Taking into account the fact that many car enthusiasts prefer to remove thermostats from below, without leaving the inspection hole, antifreeze can easily get into the driver’s eyes. This, in turn, can lead to serious eye irritation and even blindness. Therefore, you should only change the thermostat while wearing safety glasses and gloves.

So, changing the thermostat on the “seven” is not a difficult task. Preparatory procedures take much more time: cooling the engine and completely draining the antifreeze from the system. Nevertheless, even a novice car owner can cope with these procedures. The main thing is to take your time and strictly follow the recommendations given above.

What signs of malfunction occur?

This device can get stuck in both the open and closed states, as well as in one of the middle states. Therefore, cooling malfunction can be of two types,

  • The engine will overheat and the antifreeze will boil if the valve is closed and the liquid does not enter the radiator. Then, at least for some time, turning on the stove at full heat and maximum airflow can help. Naturally, this option is the most dangerous.
  • The engine will take much longer to warm up if the valve is “stuck” open. This is still better than the first option, but the thermostat still needs to be replaced.

What kind of thermostat VAZ-2114

The efficiency of the stove and other parameters that affect the operation of the entire engine depend on the engine temperature. The temperature depends on the thermostat. A thermostat is a device that directs coolant through a large or small cooling circle.

Principle of operation

The operation of the thermostat is based on opening the valve and increasing the radius of the circulation system. When starting a cold engine, the valve is closed, coolant circulates only inside the engine itself. When the temperature reaches 80–90 degrees, the valve opens, allowing the radiator to also be used for cooling. Circulation increases. The thermostat is designed to reduce engine warm-up time.

Choice

Finding a good thermostat won't be a problem. The main thing to consider is a few nuances when choosing:

  1. The body must be made of aluminum or brass. Plastic cases often break due to their fragility, iron cases rot, and stainless steel cases get very cold in frosty weather.
  2. The packaging must indicate the opening temperature. It should not exceed 90 degrees. It is worth considering the operating temperature of the engine.
  3. The seats for the pipes must have convex ends, since they act as a holder for the clamps.
  4. The valve must fit snugly to the seat seat, neither loose nor open.

The car market allows you to choose from many models of thermostats. It is better to make the choice according to the catalog article of the original models. Gates thermostats are marked with article number TH37783G1.

The most popular models for domestic cars is the Luzar thermostat. It is marked with article number 2190-1306010.

The domestic model “Forward” is also well suited for the VAZ 2107 car. It is marked with article number FA01-1306010.

The thermostat is an important part of the engine cooling system. The heating time, productivity, and fuel consumption for warming up depend on its operation. A high-quality part made from modern materials will increase the service life of the thermostat. For regions with cold winters, the quality of the thermostat is most important, since it takes more time to warm up the engine.
