One of the owners of Lada Priora decided to do engine tuning by installing a receiver (intake module) from a 1.8-liter VAZ 21179 (from Lada XRAY or Lada Vesta, article number 21177-1008600-00) on the 1.6-liter VAZ 21126 engine. He determined the effectiveness of such modification in several ways.

Why was the receiver from VAZ 21179 chosen?

:

  • it is as similar as possible to the VAZ 21126 receiver;
  • it is plastic, which means it will not heat the intake air so much, which will have a positive effect on the filling as a whole;
  • According to numerous tests, he showed the results of almost TOP receivers.

Reasons for replacing the Lada Priora receiver

There are a considerable number of varieties of intake manifolds, for example, made from various types of metals or composite materials. However, the Priora receiver is made entirely of plastic. This material prevents excessive heating of the manifold due to a hot car engine.

Thus, the air flow characteristics are improved, which has a positive effect on the proportions and quality of the air-fuel mixture. However, plastic also has a main, negative side - fragility. As a result, numerous breakdowns occur both due to the fault of the car owner and due to low temperatures at which the plastic loses its strength coefficient.

The most common damage can be caused by: - ​​road traffic accidents (even minor ones); — accidental impacts during any repair work in the engine compartment; — other reasons;

If the receiver on your car has through holes or any other leaks, then it must be repaired (if possible) or replaced. If a part is faulty, air loss will occur, resulting in improper engine operation.

Test No. 2

Acceleration was measured using a special Drag-On device. As a result of the races, a table of measurements was compiled on different configurations (the last measurement on the receiver was made on light forged wheels, all the rest on conventional stamping):

On the standard receiver, acceleration to 100 mph was 9.2 seconds, on the 21179 receiver - 9.1 seconds (different disks could affect the result). A noticeable difference is felt at a distance of 400 m. Receiver 21126 - 16.5 seconds, and on 21179 - 16.0 seconds.

How to remove the receiver on a Priora

Tools that may come in handy: - 10mm socket; - key 13; - screwdriver.

To remove the intake manifold you will need:

  1. Due to the fact that in the next steps of the instructions there will be manipulations with electrical wiring, it is necessary to remove the negative terminal of the battery.
  2. The next step is to remove the plastic screen (cover) from the engine housing. This is done so that it does not interfere with your work.
  3. After which, it is necessary to remove power from the four ignition coils and dismantle them. To do this, pull out the contact chips. Take a 10mm socket (or a wrench of the same size) and unscrew one fastening bolt on each coil. Simply pull the coils upwards using the necessary force. Now they can be removed. There is no need to remove the spark plugs themselves; they will not interfere with removal. On the other hand, it is advisable to take advantage of the situation and check their condition (gap and spark quality).

  4. Our next task is to dismantle the throttle assembly. The receiver cannot be removed without removing it. To remove the throttle and avoid excess antifreeze leaking out of the cooling system pipes, you need to prepare first (unscrew the cap of the expansion tank with coolant). To remove the throttle, it is necessary to disconnect all the pipes connected to it, including those responsible for the air supply (corrugation) and cooling. In order to remove the assembly itself, you need to unscrew the two fastening nuts with a wrench or a 13mm socket. Now the assembly together with the sealing strip can be removed, and at the same time inspected and, if necessary, cleaned.

  5. At this point, locate and remove the crankcase ventilation hose. To do this, loosen the tightened clamp using a flat-head screwdriver and pull it towards you.

  6. The next step is to dismantle the dipstick structure to check the oil level. It is attached to one screw, which must be unscrewed.
  7. Now the most important thing is to remove the Priora 16 valve receiver. Doing this is not as difficult as it seems. First of all, we need to unscrew the nuts from the three connecting bolts at the junction of the block and the manifold. It is most convenient to work from a repair pit or using a lift, having previously dismantled the underbody protection of the car. After that, you just have to unscrew two additional nuts.

  8. It's time to move into the engine compartment and unscrew the two special mounting bolts that are located on the right and left of the receiver housing.

  9. After which the receiver can be carefully removed.
  10. Depending on the type and configuration of components in your engine, you may need to unscrew, rotate or remove any component that prevents the receiver from being removed (for example, power steering or a generator).

Installing a receiver on a Priora

As usual, installation is carried out in the same way as removal, however, during its production you must be extremely careful not to damage the receiver body. It is extremely important to insert the installed part with the holes into the connecting pins of the cylinder block, after which the manifold is directed to the mounting points on the engine.

Small but important points for installation:

  • always clean or lubricate the rubber seals installed at the points of contact between the receiver and the cylinder block;
  • Properly tighten the nuts at the joints of the elements.

Conclusion

  • Receiver 21179 showed itself better than 21126, as an alternative to the standard one - this is an excellent option.
  • Receiver 21179 is not a sports receiver as it is presented in tests.
  • The appropriate price for the 21179 receiver is 3,500 rubles (now it is sold for 5,000 rubles).
  • With the receiver 21179 the response to pressing the gas pedal has become clearer. When you lightly press the gas pedal, the traction has become better (you can feel the acceleration, there is no need to press the pedal harder as before), the top has become brighter.

Which receiver is better for Priora?

There is no clear answer to this question. Each situation is individual. However, some comparisons can be made between receivers made of plastic and aluminum.

Advantages of aluminum products:

  • higher strength and wear resistance;
  • increased engine power due to design features and a larger volume of supplied air;
  • Some models are easier to install and therefore easier to remove.

In addition, the shape of the collector itself plays an important role in ensuring increased power, which should not contain sharp corners and transitions. What about the air? And it passes through a special system, one of the most important parts of which is the receiver. What is it?

Performance Improvement Methods

Increasing the working volume

The best modification of VAZ 2112 engines is this method, it is the most convenient, quite simple, and the most common. It allows you to increase engine torque without changing your driving style. This can be done in two ways - boring the cylinders and increasing the piston stroke, now in more detail:

  • The piston stroke is increased due to the installation of a new crankshaft, which has a greater eccentricity and the selection of pistons and connecting rods for this shaft
  • Connecting rods are usually selected by weight and installed mainly from lightweight options
  • The piston is a key part in any engine, so replacing the piston group can significantly increase engine efficiency and power
  • And at the end of the tuning we install a lightweight flywheel
  • Such actions lead to a reduction in the load on the crankshaft and clutch, which speeds up the acceleration of the car and increases its dynamics.
  • Slightly easier tuning of the stock VAZ 2112 engine, cylinder boring
  • The method is based on the fact that engines, as a rule, all have a margin of thickness at the cylinder walls (reserve margin)
  • From this we can conclude that the volume of the cylinders can be increased by boring; by grinding down the walls, we increase the volume due to them
  • This will immediately increase the engine power, because the bored cylinders begin to burn a larger volume of fuel per unit of time.
  • Do-it-yourself boring is not done, only on specialized equipment

Cylinder boring

Increasing the compression ratio

“Compression ratio” is essentially the ratio of the total volume of a cylinder to the total volume of its combustion chamber. By increasing the compression ratio, it is possible to significantly increase the engine power and its efficiency, in addition to slightly reducing gasoline consumption. So:

  • VAZ 2112 increase in engine power is achieved by installing a tuning camshaft that has different geometric parameters
  • Due to the new camshaft, the volume of the combustion chamber increases, without increasing the volume of the engine itself, which has a very positive effect on its power and efficiency.
  • It is more advisable to perform the VAZ 2112 engine tuning procedure by replacing the camshaft in parallel with other engine modifications, for example, combined with the installation of turbocharging
  • However, it should be remembered that operating an engine with a high compression ratio independently requires the owner to use high-quality fuel and branded engine oil
  • Otherwise, your engine may suddenly start to stall, its temperature may rise sharply above the permissible norm
  • The compression ratio increases to 9.7 - 10

Chip tuning

Today, perhaps, it is considered the most modern method. It is characterized by relative simplicity and effectiveness. His method is to change the settings of the motor control unit, due to this you can improve some of its characteristics without the risk of repairing this unit afterwards:

  • When performing engine chip tuning on a VAZ 2112, the standard software of the control unit is replaced with a sports one, developed, for example, for a VAZ 2112 engine with 16 valves
  • In this case, first, a standard controller program is read from your engine control unit directly through the sensors
  • After downloading, this program is reprogrammed taking into account the characteristics and reserves of the motor
  • These works are carried out by specialized companies or car services that have the necessary software and specialists, because such settings require experience, as well as the appropriate skills of a specialist

  • Almost the only drawback is considered to be a slight decrease in the environmental friendliness of exhaust gases and increased gasoline consumption
  • An alternative to this method is online tuning; it does not fundamentally change the program, it only makes adjustments according to the changed motor parameters

Installation of turbocharging

This method of VAZ 2112 engine modification is considered an effective and common type of tuning. Since the power characteristics of a car depend mainly on the amount of gasoline and air in the mixture, which ignites in the cylinders. So:

  • To increase engine power, it is necessary to supply an increased volume of gasoline to the cylinders.
  • And to increase power, the volume of fuel alone is not enough; a corresponding increase in the volume of air will be necessary; for this, in fact, a turbine is installed
  • In this case, the exhaust gases pass through the turbine impeller and rotate it, and the impeller drives the compressor itself
  • This compressor fills the cylinders with air.
  • The air is pumped under pressure
  • Compared to conventional motors, a much larger volume of air is supplied
  • And an increase in the volume of air that is pumped into the cylinders correspondingly leads to an increase in the amount of gasoline burned, which significantly increases engine power
  • But it’s worth remembering that after installing the turbine you will most likely need to modify the cooling system

Installation of "nulevik"

In common parlance, an air filter with reduced resistance is called; it serves to reduce resistance in the air intake system, and thereby increase the filter’s throughput. Air access to the cylinders is facilitated and, accordingly, power increases by a couple of percent. These filters differ from standard filters not so much in their shape as in their high transmittance, the photo is shown below.

Zero filter

Tuning the VAZ 21124 engine with such a filter is also common; this is the simplest tuning and the engine is not opened.

Inlet receiver

The receiver is an important element in setting up the air intake. If the volume is larger than usual, this allows, with proper design and good tuning, to smooth out air pulsations as much as possible, and in addition, in this configuration, the duration of the intake tract is shorter. So:

  • This allows us to get additional positive torque at high and medium speeds
  • And to obtain increased torque at the lowest speeds, the intake channels should be made longer, on the contrary
  • The most optimal is to change the duration of the intake channels depending on the revolutions
  • For example, at a speed of 2700 - 3000 rpm, only the long intake tract works, and when the speed increases, the short one
  • This solution has long been implemented on foreign cars, and VAZ, of course, developed the 11193 engine with a variable intake manifold length back in 1998
  • Moreover, tuning forced engines are certainly equipped with increased volume receivers
  • Such a part as an intake receiver is a very good tool for enriching all tuning firms; the price does not fall below $200
  • You should know that you won’t be able to simply buy and install the receiver yourself; careful timing adjustment is also necessary; incorrect adjustment will result in a drop in speed in all driving modes
  • The disadvantages of receivers include the parasitic resonance that occurs at the air inlet

Channel tuning

In a VAZ 2112 engine, modification of the intake and exhaust channels of the block head is also tuning. They must be processed carefully - increasing the diameter (attention - at the inlet, with an uncalculated increase in the diameter of the exhaust channels, sometimes a completely opposite effect can be achieved), removing all irregularities, as well as sagging and joints - all protrusions that can slow down the movement of the air flow. After this, the channels must be thoroughly sanded. Some offices offer polishing, although this is technically illiterate. It is worth saying that not all of the “inconsistencies” in the cylinder head should be cut off, since some of them play an important role; they create important back pressure or flow inhibition in the right place.

Valves

It is advisable to use valves for tuning of a larger diameter or lighter ones. And when the engine spins above 7000 rpm, it is recommended to use stiffer valve springs or sports springs of the “Schrick” type and modified (specially lightweight, made of titanium) valve plates. By the way, valves from BMW are well “implanted” into the 8-valve engine. Having rods with a diameter of 7 millimeters. Inexpensively (by tuning standards) you can buy “Shrick” valves, or make titanium valves with a protective coating individually to order. If you plan to use standard valves, then they need to be lightened and ground in as much as possible, since there is no valve lapping operation on the VAZ manufacturer’s conveyor belt, and the chamfers on the valves and their seats are already designed for “grinding in themselves” during the running-in process.

Camshafts

Tuning shafts differ in such characteristics as lift and phase characteristics:

  • As the instructions say, the speed range at which the camshaft will produce the effect of increasing power and filling the engine cylinders is determined by the width of the valve opening phases and their wave (frequency) parameters of the gas path, in other words, by the geometric parameters of the cams that control the exhaust and intake system
  • The magnitude of this effect will be determined by the maximum lift when opening the valves, as well as by the parameters of their closing, provided that the resistance inside the gas path is adequately reduced
  • Here it is important to decide for what purpose the engine is boosted and, based on such parameters, choose your camshaft
  • When replacing a camshaft, it is advisable (more correctly, obligatory) to use the so-called “split gear”, because it is necessary to precisely adjust the phase characteristic so as not to “catch its resonance”
  • The structure of such a gear is quite simple - it allows the gear to move smoothly in relation to the center with fixation in the desired position. There are also “split” pulleys for the crankshaft
  • A wide range of shafts has been produced for the VAZ 8-valve engine, designed to suit every taste.
  • Of these, the most promising for “urban open spaces” are shafts from 49 to 55, intended for street racing from 56 to 62, then there are purely sports ones, intended for rallies or circuit racing
  • Of these, a new direction is of undoubted interest - the use of shafts with non-planar pushers - for the 21083 motor
  • This technical solution will make it possible to implement a large lift of valves with a high opening and closing speed and a narrow phase characteristic
  • To modify the 16-crank motor, three pairs of shafts were produced with values ​​of 38/32, 44/38, and also 50/44
  • You should be aware that when installing such shafts in new cylinder heads, the shafts may get caught on the tides
  • And the higher the rise, the greater the likelihood
  • Therefore, you should first check the “scrolling” (rotation in a circle) of the shaft, and, if necessary, modify the cylinder head

What is a receiver for?

In fuel-injected cars, the air travels a long way before entering the combustion chamber. The order of its movement looks like this:

The most important and expensive in this set is the mass air flow sensor. It determines the amount of air that has entered the engine. Based on its readings, the on-board computer regulates the opening time of the injectors, according to the configured setting. This creates an optimal air-fuel mixture. The throttle assembly opens and closes the air flow to increase and decrease rpm. A correctly installed receiver divides the total flow into sleeves, sending identical jets to each of the cylinders.

Gasoline supply

I think there is no need to explain the importance of maintaining a stable, constant gasoline pressure in the injector rail:

  • During normal city driving, the standard fuel regulator is sufficient at high speeds, but a situation arises that with the injectors constantly open, it leads to a general decrease in pressure in the rail
  • As a result, the fuel supply decreases, poor atomization results, and engine malfunction
  • Therefore, boosting the engine requires increasing the pressure by 0.5 - 1 atmosphere, it all depends on the degree of boosting the engine
  • Naturally, it will be necessary to adjust the injection program to ensure the correct mixture composition
  • Today, in the latest (so-called “transitional”) models, as well as new 1.6-liter engines, a drainless system is used; the RTD is located in the tank with the fuel pump assembly and creates a higher pressure of 3.8 Atmospheres

Injectors

A natural process when, when boosting the engine, a situation often arises that the performance (amount of fuel supplied) is simply not enough:

  • In this case, you will need to replace the nozzles, install more efficient ones, or install a second row of nozzles
  • Option two is quite difficult and time-consuming, and it is not always possible to implement it even in a standard block.
  • Therefore, it is easier to install more efficient injectors, having a productivity from +15% to +50% (and it is undesirable to use publicly available injectors used on GAZ cars; apart from high productivity, they have no more advantages)
  • The disadvantages are the speed and non-linear characteristic at the beginning of its range, where a regular car has XX
  • In addition, as a rule, 4-2-1 “spiders” are installed on souped-up cars, which work well in a wide speed range
  • Spiders of the 4-1 system did not take root in civilian tuning due to the narrow range of their effective operation
  • And the principle of operation of the exhaust is based on the vacuum created in front of the closed exhaust valve, this contributes to improved purging of the cylinder

The most important thing when carrying out tuning is a professional approach, in addition, care when performing all operations. Because not every driver understands all the intricacies of engine operation, so it is better to entrust the tuning of the car to experienced professionals. How to remove and install the receiver

This work is quite accessible to a novice car enthusiast. Read the instructions, prepare the tools and go ahead with the removal and installation. And you need to prepare the following set:

  • Driver and extension for heads.
  • Heads No. 13, 10.
  • Screwdrivers.
  • Pliers (just in case).

And you can start working. According to the established tradition of normal locksmiths, the first thing to do is disconnect the battery terminal. And only then start disassembling. The first step is to disconnect all sensors and ignition modules. And move the wire harnesses away from them so as not to damage them. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the clamps on the rubber adapter from the mass air flow sensor to the throttle and remove the adapter sleeve from the damper assembly. Unscrew the two nuts 13 securing the throttle assembly with the Priora receiver.

Using a 10 mm socket, unscrew the bolts securing the ignition modules. Remove them. Unscrew the 2 10mm nuts holding the Priora receiver to the head. Now let's move on to the front. You need to start with the oil dipstick connection. It is screwed with a self-tapping bolt to the receiver. After this, pull the dipstick cover up and put it away. It's time to unscrew the main mounting bolts of the device. There are 5 of them. More precisely, these are 2 13 nuts and 2 bolts. It's quite difficult to unscrew them. Especially if the car is equipped with air conditioning. You will have to use a cardan for the head. But when they are all unscrewed, all that remains is to push the receiver towards you and remove it.

Receiver installation

There's nothing complicated here. Just proceed in the reverse order when installing. The main thing is to check the condition of the rubber O-rings before installation. They are installed directly into the body of the part, around the outlet holes in the head. And on the connection for installing the throttle valve.
