Error P0444 - Evaporative emission control system purge solenoid valve - open circuit

To understand what the essence of error 0444 on the VAZ 2114 is, you should first become familiar with the gasoline vapor recovery system EVAP - Evaporative Emission Control. This system was developed on cars as part of the global struggle for ecology and clean air. It combines several important elements included in the fuel system, designed to retain fuel vapors, preventing their release into the atmosphere.

Vapors are formed when gasoline heats up during engine operation. They are collected in the adsorber separator, and when the engine starts, they are moved to the intake manifold, which is a complex of pipelines and dampers connected by a single reservoir. From the manifold, fuel vapors enter the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine, where they burn successfully. The EVAP system is installed on all modern car models with gasoline engines. It consists of a carbon adsorber, a PA solenoid valve and connecting pipes.

The adsorber filled with granular carbon collects gasoline vapors coming from the gas tank. The plastic container contains: a separator, a pressure sensor, and an activated carbon filter element. An electromagnetic valve is installed on the pipeline.

The adsorber connects:

  • With a gas tank from which gasoline vapors come;
  • With an inlet line through which the adsorber is blown;
  • With atmosphere through the air filter.

The process is controlled by the solenoid valve for purge the adsorber. This is an actuator in the engine control system. It is located on the pipeline connecting the adsorber and the intake manifold.

Code P0444 indicates a problem with the electrical circuit of this valve. The error is recorded in the memory of the electronic control unit after 2 operating cycles, as soon as it detects the absence of an electrical load in a given section of the circuit.

The pictures below show the canister purge valve.

Below, the reader will find out what causes error 0444 and what its symptoms are. We will try to tell you how to resolve error P0444 on a VAZ 2114 and answer other questions that concern VAZ 2114 owners due to error P0444.

How does a mechanic diagnose a P0444 code?

To properly diagnose the P0444 trouble code, a mechanic will need an OBD-II scanner. The mechanic will check all tubes and components related to the evaporative emission system for wear and damage. The mechanic will then perform a thorough check for vacuum leaks. He will start the car engine and check if there is a suction sound in the vacuum pipes. The mechanic will then perform a smoke leak test to determine if there is a leak in the evaporative emission system.

Symptoms of malfunction

The main driver symptom of P0444 is the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light). It is also called Check engine or simply “check light”.

They can also appear as:

  1. The “Check engine” warning light on the control panel will light up (the code will be stored in the ECM memory as a malfunction).
  2. The engine may run lean or run rough if the purge valve is stuck open.
  3. Excess pressure in the gas tank in the form of a "whistling" sound when the cap is removed, this indicates that the purge valve is not working at all or is stuck in the closed position.
  4. Slight increase in fuel consumption.

The severity of the P0444 code is moderate. The car will be able to continue driving, but harmful emissions into the atmosphere will increase. Which in practice will not allow you to pass the toxicity test.

What repairs can fix the P0444 code?

  • Thorough check of the fuel vapor recovery system.
  • Repair or replace damaged wires.
  • Replacement of faulty components of the fuel vapor recovery system.
  • Clear the error code from the PCM memory and retest the system.
  • Test drive the vehicle after the repair is completed to find out if the problem is resolved.

Additional comments for troubleshooting P0444

The fuel vapor recovery system is primarily designed to reduce emissions of harmful substances from vehicle exhaust gases. Failure of this system can lead to a significant increase in emissions.

Is it possible to drive with this problem?

Car owners who have error code P0444 displayed on their dashboard are wondering: is it possible to drive with this error and for how long. Experts believe that you can drive with this error if it is not superimposed by other errors and malfunctions in the control circuit of the canister purge valve (CPA), sometimes more serious than P0444. If there are problems with pressure in the system, there is reason to suspect a vacuum problem. And if cleaning the filter in the adsorber did not help solve the problem, you should contact a specialist to resolve error P0444 on the VAZ 2114.

Technical description and interpretation of error P0443

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code. Trouble code P0443 is considered a common code because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles. Although the specific repair steps may vary slightly depending on the model.

This code indicates that part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning properly. The EVAP system is made up of many parts, including (but not limited to) the tank cap, fuel lines, charcoal canister, purge valve, and others.

An emission control system (EVAP) prevents the release of fuel vapors from the vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapor is directed through hoses into a coal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running, the purge control valve opens, allowing fuel vapor to be drawn in under vacuum.

The purge of the EVAP canister is controlled by a valve that, thanks to the vacuum created by the engine, allows fuel vapor to be drawn in. They go from the fuel tank to the engine to be burned, rather than escaping into the atmosphere.

The vehicle controller monitors the valve circuit to detect faults. When the purge solenoid is not activated, the ECM should see high voltage in the circuit. When the solenoid is activated, the car's computer sees that the ground voltage has been reduced to close to zero. If the ECM does not see the expected voltages or detects an open circuit, DTC P0443 will set.

Other automaker definitions for P1602

DTC P1602 is considered a vehicle manufacturer specific code. Brands like Volkswagen and Audi refer to it as "Engine Control Module - Low Battery Voltage" or "Power Supply Terminal 30 (B+) Low Voltage." This malfunction occurs when the transmission control determines that the battery current supplied when the ignition is off does not reach the minimum permissible threshold.

Various motor control modules are a complex computer, which includes a large number of voltage regulators and stabilizers, current converters, driver circuits and several types of memory.

Certain functions, such as fault memory, basic idle speed settings, basic ignition timing settings and some others, depend on the memory functions. If the power supply to these circuits is interrupted, malfunctions related to these functions may occur. In fact, these circuits remain turned on even when the ignition is off to ensure that the engine starts and runs smoothly.

The set of functions of these functions is also known as KAM. The PCM is supplied with the most important operating instructions via the KAM memory. With their help, it starts running and can be used until the PCM activates inputs or sensor feedback loops to keep the engine running.

From the above it should be clear that if the KAM memory was lost due to a lack of or stopped power, the critical operating elements that the PCM requires to "boot" will be out of reach and the engine may eventually be shut down. However, when the PCM detects insufficient power to the Keep Alive Memory, it will set a P1602 code and the warning light may also come on.

Error p0523 on Grant

During the first 14 months of operation of the Grant, nothing critical happened to it. And, in principle, what could happen to a new car in a year with a mileage of 11,000 kilometers? That's right - nothing!

Nothing critical, but various problems and misunderstandings still happened. One of these misunderstandings is error P0523, which popped up in my BC STATE.

First, I'll briefly tell you how I learned about this error. And I found out purely by chance. I just decided to check these same mistakes in the STATE. E-oops! Miracle - there is a mistake. It turned out that BC STAT has one very bad feature - it does not signal errors at all. Moreover, the check for my money didn’t light up either (but more on that below).

And so, the prehistory is over, let's begin.

Error p0523 - translated as “Oil pressure sensor circuit, high signal level.”

I searched the Internet and found three possible reasons for this error. I'll save you time and name them.

  1. Glitch in the brain. In this case, it is enough to reset the error in the STATE and it will no longer appear. This was exactly my option).
  2. Faulty oil pressure sensor. The solution is simple - replace the sensor. Considering that it costs around 300 rubles, you can buy it right away, as they say, “in reserve.” The fact is that the failure of this sensor, apparently, is a childhood problem for Grant.

  3. There is a small rubber band inside the pressure sensor chip that can burst. As a result, the chip on the sensor will not fit tightly. As a result, this error appears. At the same time, the oil can light will not light up on the instrument panel when the ignition is turned on. Of course, it can burn out. To check this, just turn on the ignition with the button on the instrument panel held down. In this way, the functionality of the entire instrument panel and the serviceability of the light bulbs are checked.

Now about why the check did not light up. In fact, I don't know the exact answer. But on the Internet, on one of the forums, I found one assumption that I liked for its logic.

The fact is that the manufacturer MUST configure the brains of the car so that the check always lights up in the event that a breakdown occurs in the car, due to which there is a direct threat to the life and health of people. But in all other cases, supposedly, the manufacturer can configure the machine’s computer to send “check” messages as it sees fit.

And here, there is a certain logic. It’s easier to turn off the display of minor and non-dangerous errors, so that we don’t torment and terrorize the officials by coming for a warranty replacement for every little thing that fails. Agree that this seems to be true...
