Throttle valve heating: what is it, what is it for and is there any point in turning it off?

The throttle valve (throttle unit (DZ and DU, respectively)) is necessary to regulate the air flow, which is necessary for preparing the fuel-air mixture (FA) entering the cylinders. During operation of the remote control, its excessive cooling occurs, resulting in interruptions in engine operation.

In order to prevent such a scenario, the manufacturer modified the throttle assembly, equipping it with heating, which is carried out using coolant. In the summer, according to many car owners, heating the diesel protection negatively affects engine performance and leads to loss of power and unstable operation of the power unit. As a result, many turn off the remote control heating for the summer, noting an improvement in engine performance and a significant increase in dynamics. However, this is all in the opinion of some motorists, but what are things really like and what could such a modification mean for the engine? Let's find out...

What is a throttle body pipe?

Throttle pipe

— the air supply system to the engine, assembled, contains several sensors: TPS (

), IAC (idle air control).

Why turn off the throttle valve heating?

According to supporters of turning off the throttle body heating, the coolant heats the air excessively, which affects engine efficiency. The bottom line is that heated air contains less oxygen, therefore, the fuel assembly will be less productive and the combustion of the combustible mixture will be less efficient. Most of all, in their opinion, this is observed in hot weather, when the air temperature is already high. Disabling the throttle heating allows you to increase the stability of the power unit, as well as get a small increase in power in hot weather.

How to properly remove an air lock from the cooling system?

According to the law of physics, air accumulates in the highest place. In a car, the highest link in the coolant chain is the throttle body. That is why the air must be removed from there. There are several ways to get rid of an air lock.

Here is the first one. If you have a 1.6 liter engine, then:

  1. First of all, we remove the plastic cover on the engine - unscrew the cap on the engine to fill the oil, and then pull out the entire cover. It is seated on rubber seals.
  2. After removing this plastic screen, screw the oil cap back on to prevent dirt from getting into the crankcase.
  3. We find the heating pipes for the throttle assembly (there are 2 of them), see the figure. Pick up any phone.
  4. Next, unscrew the cap of the expansion tank (coolant reservoir) and cover the neck of the tank with a clean rag.
  5. We begin to blow into the tank with liquid. We blow until all the air comes out of the hose and antifreeze flows out.
  6. We quickly put the tube back on and tighten it with a clamp so that no air gets in.

(It is worth noting that depending on the tube that you removed, antifreeze may leak from both the tube and the fitting from which the tube was removed).

Turn off the throttle valve heating

This activity is usually carried out in the spring-summer period; in winter, the heating of the remote control is switched back on. The implementation of the plan occurs as follows: a special fitting, clamps and a small piece of rubber hose are bought in the store. The coolant inlet and outlet hoses are disconnected and connected to each other using a special adapter fitting, bypassing the throttle assembly. To prevent anything from getting inside the coolant inlet and outlet on the throttle assembly, it is necessary to plug the holes using a hose that fits onto the corresponding fittings.

After this modification, you will be able to see for yourself whether it makes sense to turn off the throttle valve heating. If you are not satisfied with such tuning, you can easily return everything to its previous state; for this, the hoses are connected according to the old scheme.

That's all for me, write in the comments what do you think makes sense to turn off the heating of the throttle assembly and what consequences, in your opinion, this may have. Periodic replacement of refrigerant

The period for replacing the fluid is indicated by the manufacturer in the operating instructions. In older engines, the replacement interval is usually 2 years or 60 thousand km of the vehicle. In new engines, this period is increased to 5 years or up to 120 thousand kilometers of total mileage.

To replace the cooler, it is necessary to drain the used one. To drain, you need to perform the following operations:

  • wait until the engine cools down, otherwise there is a risk of burns;
  • open the radiator cap;
  • install a wide vessel under the radiator;
  • Unscrew the drain plugs in the radiator and engine block.

When replacing coolant, and especially when changing its type, it is necessary to flush the hydraulic system. Flushing involves supplying water with a hose to the radiator filler neck and passing it through the entire hydraulic system. During the procedure, you can start the engine so that the running pump participates in the flushing process.

After emptying and flushing, the drain plug must be tightened. Slowly fill the radiator, block jacket and pump to the maximum level. When the radiator cap is open, you must start the engine to remove air from the pipeline. Only when you are sure that the air has been removed can you tighten the plug tightly.

After filling with antifreeze, you must leave the engine running for another 10 minutes to check the tightness, as well as the time it takes to reach the desired temperature (signaled by turning on the radiator fan).

This is all clear, but what is it really like?

In fact, driving without heating the remote control is not advisable, and in winter, turning off the throttle valve can lead to freezing of the remote control. Due to high air humidity and negative temperatures, freezing of the damper, as well as channels, including idle channels, occurs.

How about summer? In the summer, heating the remote control has virtually no effect on the temperature of the air that passes through the throttle valve, since the powerful air flow (approximately 40 l/sec and 2400 l/min) simply does not have time to warm up in such a short period of time passing through the throttle assembly. In addition, the coolant temperature is regulated by the cooling system regardless of the season and ambient temperature.

If the above arguments do not seem convincing enough to you, you can personally check whether it makes sense to turn off the heating of the throttle assembly. How to do it right?

Do-it-yourself repairs

Anyone who has basic knowledge of how the cooling system of the VAZ-2107 works, plumbing tools and is able to determine the cause of the problem can try to fix the breakdown on their own. The driver will be able to cope with replacing a damaged wire or pump belt without any problems. But if you are not sure of the diagnosis or there is a suspicion of a serious breakdown, it is certainly better to put the car in the hands of a specialist.

Improperly carried out repairs can create many serious problems. First of all, the driver should know that a malfunction of the car’s hydraulic system will very quickly lead to complete destruction of the engine.

When cleaning is necessary

In addition to mileage, there are additional signs that will indicate the need to clean or replace the throttle valve:

  1. The decrease in speed from high to low when releasing the gas pedal occurs jerkily. The revolutions may immediately drop by 300-400.
  2. In winter, the engine has difficulty starting, and the smell of gasoline can be felt in enclosed spaces.
  3. During startup, not all cylinders are immediately put into operation; a “triple” effect appears. While the car is moving, slight twitching is felt, especially when accelerating.

Contamination of the damper occurs due to the ingress of combustion product residues - oils, fuel, soot - onto it. As a result, a coking process occurs, which leads to jamming of parts and loss of smooth movement. Due to the narrowing of the gap, the amount of air that enters the cylinder also decreases. This, in turn, leads to a loss of engine power.

Tip: In addition to cleaning the damper itself, it will be useful to check the operation of the air flow, idle speed and throttle lift sensors.

I don’t really care, I turned it off, period. , I may return it for the winter if I notice that it will “coke”

oil in the throttle or something will freeze and freeze (just before shutting it off, I cleaned the entire receiver and throttle, so I have an idea of the amount of oil and dirt that was in them, so we’ll see in another 50 thousand whether this will have an effect) IMHO, nonsense that's all, and according to my observations, turning off the throttle heating does not affect anything 8)

I’ve already ridden in super-humid weather at a temperature of about 0 on the highway, at high speeds, and there were no problems with anything
