Everyone knows that chip in translation means “slice”. It is no less widely known that electronic chips are information storage facilities for computer systems. Likewise in a car, a chip is a microcircuit that contains the “firmware”, “operating system” of the ECU.

How does this happen

This system is based on reading sensor readings. Schematically, the principle of operation of an engine with an ECM (Electronic Engine Control System) looks like this.

  1. Signal receipt from various sensors.
  2. Processing of received data in a microcircuit, chip, ECU.
  3. Switching on of actuators according to the provided tables.

The operation of the sensors is based on various principles, but the essence is the same, a change in voltage during any action. Thus, the crankshaft position sensor changes the voltage at the moment when a gap appears in front of it in the toothed rim of the pulley. A change in voltage at this moment lets the computer know that the crankshaft is rotating and it’s time to supply a spark and fuel. The throttle position sensor (TPS) shows the degree of throttle opening by changing the resistance. In this case, the ECU, in accordance with the attached tables, regulates the opening time of the injectors. That is, it increases or decreases the fuel supply. All this is done by the same Chip.

The first cars with an ECM and replacing their firmware

At first, the USSR auto industry collaborated with the American one. This was in the 80s. The ECUs installed on the first versions of “injection” cars were of the corresponding brand - GM. Then a domestic analogue was created - “January 4”. In general, the order of release of ECUs with firmware for domestic cars was as follows.

Main stages of chip tuning

Before you begin upgrading the engine, you must bring it into a condition that meets factory specifications. Otherwise, the cost of chip tuning and the setup itself will be pointless. The reprogramming procedure does not depend on the make of the car or the number of camshafts with 8-valve or 16-valve mechanisms. Chip tuning of the Priora engine consists of four stages:

  1. Reading the standard program in the ECU - this procedure is carried out through the OBD diagnostic connector.
  2. Editing a downloaded program.
  3. Uploading the edited, firmware program back to the controller.
  4. Checking the operation of all vehicle components on a special stand equipped with instrumentation and mechanical rollers, or in the field.

  1. Copy the firmware files (Chain.bin, chain.lst, NK.bin, TINYNK.bin) to the root of the SD card.
  2. Remove the flash drive from the USB port.
  3. Insert the SD card into the MMC.
  4. Restart the radio (for Lada Kalina 2/Priora - hold down the power button for 15 seconds, for Lada Granta hold down the volume button for 15 seconds).
  5. During the download, an update will occur, after which the radio will boot into desktop mode.

About online capture of one of the tables. With the OpenOLT program, it is possible to capture one of 15 tables in online management. To write the adjusted table into the ECU memory, you will need to re-upload the firmware. This is, of course, not a full-fledged engineering unit, but it is much more convenient than pouring each calibration into your brain a dozen times in search of the optimal result.

The end result is very pleasing, I haven’t taken measurements on slippery roads yet, but according to the ass meter, it’s much more dynamic than standard brains.

I have it too, I tried to install it, the car doesn’t drive on it at all, it sometimes breaks out from under itself, or on the contrary, power loss begins. Therefore, measuring power after flashing the engine is not entirely correct; the stand measures power within one gear and with the pedal constantly pressed to the floor, but in life we ​​don’t drive like that.

MMK Super Dynamic is available for 1.6 engines with manual transmission. It allows you to get maximum dynamics from the car. Firmwares are suitable for those who like to drive. These firmwares have amazing traction, the car drives very well, but the transition from engine braking to acceleration mode is very abrupt. If you upload this firmware to someone who doesn’t like to drive, there will often be complaints about a very harsh pedal, and the ride becomes uncomfortable.

Recently I have been uploading firmware from Chelyaba to 1.6 engines with AMT (“robot”). He made firmware for Vesta with creeping mode. At the factory, 1.6-liter engines are not equipped with creep mode firmware, because the engine does not know how to accelerate. This was done at the software level, and as I understand it, they don’t want to pay money for the development of completely new software for 1.6 engines, so they decided to leave these engines without creep mode. And in the Chelyab firmware the idle speed has been slightly added to make it easier to get underway. And when the clutch is released, the “robot” accelerates a little. The car with this firmware drives very cheerfully.

Chelyaba also has firmware for a robot without crawling mode. If we compare it with MMK, then Chelyaba will be an order of magnitude more dynamic, but sharper, and MMK will be smoother.

The situation is similar with 1.8 engines. Those who want smoothness, I flash MMK, those who need more drive and sharpness - Chelyaba.

By the way, Chelyaba is now working hard on firmware for the 1.8-liter engine. He bought a Vesta 1.8 AMT for himself, and over the last month he sent me about 10 versions of different firmware. The guys and I test them, and we pass the results on to him, he then edits them, etc.

There are advertised firmwares, which in fact are not at all as wonderful as the consumer is told about it; on some firmwares, cars detonate, on some, the car simply does not drive much better than the factory one. Again, many authors have their own segment of priority cars, and for other cars they make mediocre firmware just to be present on the market in a given make/model.
