Adsorber: what is it in a car, device and principle of operation

Adsorber or absorber, which is correct? Any internal combustion engine is a source of emissions of harmful substances into the environment. New methods are being invented and old ones are being improved to reduce harmful emissions. Today, environmental friendliness is the reputation of a car manufacturer. For example, in order to comply with the environmental friendliness of Euro 3 engines, a capture device must be installed in the vehicle design, which will ensure lower CO2 emissions.

Fuel absorber

An absorber is a device that absorbs gases and vapors that appear at the outlet of the fuel tank as a result of heating and evaporation. From the Latin sorbeo translates as absorb.

When a car's internal combustion engine is running, the trapped vapors are sent to the fuel injection system - to the intake manifold.

When the engine is not running, part of the fuel vapor is captured by the separator and sent back to the gas tank, and part is captured by the fuel vapor adsorber, where they are neutralized.

Why do you need an absorber in a car?

The automobile fuel absorber appeared when the Euro2 engine environmental class was established. Environmental standards do not allow gasoline vapors to escape into the atmosphere, as this greatly pollutes the environment. Fuel vapors should not enter the car interior.

Such a filtration system does not exist in cars with carburetors. Absorbers began to be installed on cars with injection internal combustion engines.

Adsorber - what is it? Visual characteristics

The word “adsorber” itself translated from English means “to absorb”, “to absorb”. By its design, this part is an energy-absorbing plate. Externally, you may not immediately be able to tell that the bumper is not solid - inside it there is a special filler made of polymer materials.

This part of the device (bumper) is considered the main one and converts mechanical energy into thermal energy, which is then dissipated in the external environment. The plate located in the adsorber bears a lot of responsibility, which is why many manufacturers place such stringent requirements on its technical characteristics and the properties of the entire device as a whole.

The main material used in the manufacture of this element is cellular plastic or expanded polystyrene foam. Recently, manufacturers have begun to use glass beads. The quality of the material itself is also strictly controlled, since the health of many people depends on it. For this reason, the adsorber (you can see a photo of this device below) is equipped only with high-quality bumpers.

But the safety and health of people depends not only on this. In order for the adsorber to perform its functions efficiently on a VAZ Kalina car, it is necessary to reduce the risk of damage to the rear bumper to zero. This part is a power element, and it is it that “bears the blow” that can cause mechanical damage. And if the device is broken or punctured, it can no longer be allowed to be used. This is because with each blow the adsorber (including the 2110 VAZ) loses its ability to absorb emissions.

Automotive absorber design

In simple words, the absorber design is a plastic jar with a filled filter catching element. The best substance for trapping and neutralizing fuel vapors is activated carbon.

The absorber consists of:

  • Separator. The separator captures gasoline vapors and sends them back to the fuel tank.
  • Gravity valve. It protects against fuel overflow if the car overturns. The valve blocks the movement of fuel.
  • Pressure meter. The pressure sensor performs an important function - it monitors the vapor pressure in the fuel tank. When the maximum permissible pressure in the tank is reached, the sensor opens and releases the pressure.
  • Filter element (activated carbon). The filter element in a car absorber is carbon in large granules. Large granules allow vapor to pass through the layer of carbon powder and condense.
  • Connecting tubes. Connecting tubes serve to connect all structural elements.
  • Solenoid valve. The solenoid valve changes the fuel vapor recovery modes.

Installation

At this stage, the adsorber has been successfully dismantled. Now you can begin installing the new device. The longest piece of rubber hose is connected to the tube that supplies fuel vapor to the purge channel. The smaller part of the hose is connected to the intake pipe from the separator. After that we put it on the fastenings. Now we connect the vapor supply hose to the purge channel. The latter is installed on the motor cover. The block with wires is also connected here. A long hose must be installed between the purge valve and the adsorber. Let us remind you that all rubber tubes must be resistant to motor oil and gasoline. The old hose with the check valve tube is removed. A short piece of part is installed in its place. That's it, at this stage the adsorber has been successfully installed. As you can see, the installation of this device can be done without the help of specialists.

Finally, we note that many car owners install adsorbers from the younger model, Priora, on VAZs of the tenth family.

Principle of operation

One of the most important elements in the design of the absorber is the solenoid valve, on which the operation of the entire cleaning system depends.

VAZ 2110 diagram

Operating principle and vapor movement in the system:

Gasoline vapor rises to the top of the fuel tank and is captured by a separator, which works in conjunction with a gravity sensor. The gravity sensor ensures safety and prevents fuel from leaking out of the tank in the event of an accident. The captured vapors in the separator condense (take on a liquid form) and return to the fuel tank.

The rest of the fuel vapor enters the absorber, where it accumulates and is neutralized. Accumulation in the absorber occurs when the engine is not running!

After the vehicle’s internal combustion engine is started, the solenoid valve opens and provides a connection between the absorber cavities and the intake manifold or throttle assembly (depending on the design). The purging process begins! Air from the street enters through the throttle valve and mixes with fuel vapor. Next, this mixture is sent to the intake manifold, from where it is supplied to the cylinders. This is how fuel vapors from the absorber are burned.

Installing a new adsorber valve

To replace an element, it is not necessary to contact a car service. You can do the work yourself using several Phillips screwdrivers. You also need to purchase a new valve (its markings must completely match the data on the old device).

After that:

  • We find the adsorber.
  • Remove the negative terminal from the battery.
  • Disconnect the wire block by pressing the latch and pulling the device towards you.
  • We loosen the fastenings of the solenoid valve and disconnect the hoses.
  • We take out the old device (the bracket will come out along with it) from the absorber.
  • We install the new device and put everything back together in reverse order.

Absorber valve: what is it for and what does it affect?

The valves in the absorber are a technically simple device that operate differently depending on whether the engine is running or not. Like all valves, it must open and close.

When the absorber cavity is clogged or some other malfunction occurs, the valve malfunctions. With a faulty adsorber valve, serious vehicle damage can occur because pressure is not released from the fuel tank and the cavity is not purged.

Symptoms of Absorber Valve Problems

There are several signs and symptoms that can help identify the technical condition of the valve:

  1. The fuel gauge shows either a full tank or an empty one.
  2. After starting the engine, after 5-10 minutes the revolutions begin to fluctuate.
  3. At idle speed, when you press the pedal, the car begins to stall.
  4. The engine does not gain speed when driving. It takes a long time to accelerate.
  5. When opening the gas tank cap, a vacuum is felt and a whistle is heard.
  6. Increased fuel consumption.
  7. When it’s cold (when the engine is running but not yet warmed up), knocking noises from the absorber are heard, as if valves are knocking.

The cause of absorber failure is not always the valve. This may be severe contamination of the absorbent element, in this case coal. Gases should easily pass through the coal granules and condense there.

The valve is very cheap. Therefore, it is possible to change if signs of improper engine operation are detected. You can also replace the adsorber filter element with your own hands: disassemble it, pour out the old coal, pour in new coal in large granules.

Where is the adsorber located on the VAZ 2110?

In order to find the adsorber, you need to lift the hood and look in the near left corner, there you will see a small black cylindrical jar.

Replacing the VAZ 2110 adsorber is a simple procedure; it consists of buying a new adsorber, removing the old one and connecting all the hoses in accordance with how they were connected.

That's all for me, the article about the adsorber has come to an end, whoever liked it, comment and share the article on social networks using the special buttons at the bottom of the article. Thank you for your attention, see you again at VAZ Repair.

What happens if you remove the fuel vapor absorber valve

Is it possible to remove the valve completely? Some people do this, thinking that because of the valve, fuel consumption increases and the car accelerates more slowly.

In fact, if the adsorber and valve are working properly, then the internal combustion engine, on the contrary, works like a clock and the consumption is at the optimal level. The savings are not as noticeable from burning off the remaining fuel vapor, but there is also less choice for the atmosphere.

To the question, is it possible to remove the absorber valve completely? Answer: yes, you can. The engine is not affected by its presence or absence. It only affects if it is installed and faulty.

Disadvantages of a car without a valve and absorber:

  • the smell of gasoline in the cabin;
  • environmental pollution;

Advantages of a machine without valve and absorber:

  • there is more space under the hood (this may be important to some);
  • no need to change the absorber and valve.

Owners of carburetor cars, I think, remember how the car’s interior often smelled of gasoline, which is why some people get headaches. For this alone, it is better not to remove the valve and absorber, but to replace them in a timely manner in case of breakdowns.

Malfunctions

The node is quite reliable; rare problems with it manifest themselves as:

  • breakage of fittings due to natural aging of plastic;
  • contamination of activated carbon from a long service life, up to complete obstruction;
  • electrical and mechanical failures of the purge valve;
  • short circuits and loss of contact in electrical wiring;
  • loss of tightness of hoses due to rubber hardening.

All this leads to an increase or decrease in idle speed, uncertain starting, increased consumption and decreased traction. Usually the ECU notices deviations and displays an error on the instrument panel.

There is even a separate section of the standard error code table dedicated to gasoline vapor recovery equipment.

Knock sensor for VAZ 2107 car injector

Detonation is the explosive combustion of a mixture in internal combustion engines. To combat this phenomenon, a knock sensor is provided for fuel-injected VAZ-2107 vehicles. Earlier models without an electronic ignition system were not equipped with such components. The article contains information about where this node is located, what it is responsible for, and on what principle it operates. Methods for detecting and eliminating malfunctions in the knock sensor will also be given.

Coolant temperature sensor

A coolant temperature sensor is necessary to transmit readings about the temperature of antifreeze or antifreeze. It also participates in the formation of the fuel mixture necessary for engine operation. Creates a richer mixture while the engine warms up. This can be noticed by paying attention to the engine speed during the warm-up period.

Located between the cylinder head and the thermostat.

Signs of malfunction:

  • There are no high speeds when warming up;
  • Difficulty starting the internal combustion engine;
  • High fuel consumption;

Replacing the adsorber

You can replace the adsorber on a VAZ 2110 without any difficulties. It is enough to study its fastening and connecting the hoses to it. Buying a new adsorber is a minimal investment. We disconnect the hoses and tubes one by one (to begin with, you can mark them with a felt-tip pen or colored tape), remove the old adsorber, and install a new one. Then we connect the hoses and tubes in the same order. Attention to your car is always justified: timely replacement of the adsorber will help you reduce fuel consumption, reduce the risk of breakdowns in the fuel system, and ensure the safety of you and your passengers.

Crankshaft sensor - design and principle of operation

The crankshaft position sensor or DPKV on the VAZ 2107 ensures engine operation (not stable, but overall). With its help, the ECU knows what position the crankshaft is in. From this, the control unit knows the location of the pistons in the cylinders, which directly affects fuel injection through the injectors, and the occurrence of a spark to ignite the fuel assembly.

The device in question has a simple design. The sensors installed on the seven work on the principle of inductance. The part consists of a metal cylindrical base with a wire wound on the surface (coil). The top of the coil is covered with a permanent magnet. The operation of the device is associated with a ring gear, which is attached to the crankshaft. It is with the help of this ring gear that the sensor records signals and transmits them to the computer. The principle of operation of the device is as follows: when the crown tooth is located at a level with the steel core of the DPKV, an electromotive force is induced in the winding. A voltage appears at the ends of the winding, which is detected by the ECU.

The gear wheel consists of 58 teeth. Two teeth on the wheel have been removed to determine the starting position of the crankshaft. If the DPKV fails, which is extremely rare, then starting the engine and its operation is simply impossible. The marking of the sensor, which is installed on the VAZ 2107, is as follows - 2112-3847010-03/04.

DIY valve diagnostics

If you only need to replace the adsorber valve, then there is no point in going to a service station. Unlike installation, this work will require a few minutes of your time and just one Phillips screwdriver. It is not difficult to find such a device, and it costs only 500-600 rubles. Well, everyone has a Phillips screwdriver in their home. Along with the valve, the adsorber sensor can also be changed, since it directly controls the first part. However, this should only be done when the sensor makes extraneous sounds in the form of crackling sounds.

First, let's check the valve for serviceability. To check this part we will need a multimeter and several pieces of wire.

First, release the retainer and remove the wiring harness block from the purge valve. Next, connect the negative voltage probe. Turning on the ignition, measure the voltage at terminal “A” of the wire block.

The result should be at least 12 volts. If there is no voltage or it is less than normal, most likely your battery is discharged or the ECU is faulty.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the clamp securing the tube to the valve. We remove the hose from the pipe. Using a screwdriver, remove the valve from the adsorber. We apply 12 V voltage from the battery to the terminals (plus to terminal “A”, minus to “B”).

If the valve does not then open with a characteristic click, the device must be replaced. By the way, if the new element does not have an o-ring, it can be borrowed from the old part. However, this is only permissible if the ring has no mechanical damage or microcracks. Otherwise, the sealing part must also be replaced.
