A distinctive feature of all old Russian cars is creaking, grinding, and incredible efforts when closing and opening doors. The phrase “don’t clap, not in the Zhiguli” has already become a catchphrase. And the owners of such cars dream of smoothness and noiselessness, like in foreign cars. By installing silent locks on your VAZ, you will stop asking your friends to “slam the door hard” so that it closes. Everything will be exactly as you wanted: smooth and quiet.

If a lock purchased for an entrance door must be as reliable as possible and able to withstand experienced burglars, then completely different criteria are required for a lock on interior doors. Quietness has become an important aspect of door handles that buyers pay attention to. Life in a state of endless racing of a hamster in a circle is extremely tiring, so it is natural to want to feel at home in peace and quiet, to isolate yourself from the surrounding noise. So door handles, fittings should be able to satisfy this desire.
In principle, any locking device can be closed silently by pulling the handle down, closing the door and carefully lowering the handle to its original position. However, this process is tedious and quickly gets boring for household members. If you do not live alone in an apartment, then the noise of doors opening or closing probably irritates you. Especially if this noise interrupts your sleep or distracts you from work and thinking. Did you know that the older the locking mechanism gets, the more noise it makes. We list the main reasons for increased sound when opening and closing doors, associated with wear and tear of the door lock:
Smooth closing of doors using shock absorbers or closers
Smooth closing can be achieved in less progressive ways - this is the use of shock absorption systems. The Blum company calls such systems BLUMOTION .
Shock absorber or closer, which is installed on the hinge arm
This system in the form of an overlay is installed directly on the hinge arm. There are limitations here, such overlays can only be installed on Blum hinges and the design of the hinge must allow this. This information can be obtained from the seller. Let’s say at the moment you don’t have money for hinges with a built-in closer, but you can initially buy simple Blum hinges, and then buy additional hinge closers .

Shock absorber or closer, which is installed at the handle
This is a more universal solution for shock absorption when closing doors, called door shock absorber . Such closers can be used for hinges that are not equipped with a shock absorption system.

The shock absorber can be installed in the following positions, according to the diagram. Usually, installing one door closer is sufficient.

Plastic and magnetic locks for interior doors
There are recommendations and tips for reducing noise from door locks, but there is also a radical solution to this problem - installing a silent lock. Currently, two types of silent locks are popular: plastic and magnetic.
The secret of a silent plastic lock is in the plastic tongue. When a door with a plastic tongue in the lock slams, a minimum of noise is produced. Such locks are made of fairly durable plastic, but there is an opinion that they quickly wear out and fail.
Magnetic locks, unlike plastic ones, do not have a tongue at all. The tongue appears only when the door is closed, being magnetized to the side elements of the lock. Magnetic locks are more durable because they do not have protruding parts that can break off if used carelessly. When purchasing a magnetic locking mechanism, be careful: not every magnetic lock fits an interior door. Pay attention to its dimensions and equipment. There is a possibility that it will not fit the thickness of your interior door, or the kit will not include a handle. It would be good to inquire about the residual magnetization of the lock, since this parameter can affect the normal closing and opening of doors. Note that magnetic locks come in the following types: passive, built-in, electromagnetic.

What tools and components need to be prepared
Of course, you can install such locks in a car service center, but you will have to pay a lot for the service, and independent work will require a minimum of cash investments and very few tools and additional components:
- A set with external euro handles, it is best to give preference to a well-known manufacturer.
- Locking mechanism with latch.
- The part of the lock that is inserted inside the device is often called the “chocolate bar”.
- Two fixing bolts that fit VAZ-2114 or VAZ-2115 car locks. It is worth noting that such clamps can have both short and long sizes. Experts recommend choosing the longest fasteners.
- A connecting bolt for the rack and a tap with which you can cut the thread.
- A small cable, the diameter of which will be approximately 1.5-1.6 mm and drills measuring 8.5, as well as 9 and 10.
In addition, a drill and a hammer, as well as a set of screwdrivers and medium-sized sandpaper can be useful in the work.
What's wrong with mechanical latches?
To silently close the door, you have to press the handle to hide the tongue in the lock body and quietly close the door leaf. This causes a lot of inconvenience and leads to wear of the attachment of the handle to the bar and loosening of the mechanism.
The main advantage of such a lock is the ability to clearly fix the blade in the closed position, with the option of locking the latch from the inside. At the same time, such latches for interior doors have disadvantages, and they are the costs of the design features of the mechanism:
If you abandon the swing system and install sliding doors with soft rubberized rollers, then the opening and closing process itself will become silent. But if a small child is sleeping in the room, you will still have to maintain silence in the apartment, because sliding doors let in more sounds than swing doors.
To ensure sound insulation of a separate room and make the opening and closing of the door with fixation in the closed position silent, silent interior swing doors made using new technology are installed.
Door opening method
If the VAZ-2109 door does not open from any side, then the cause of the breakdown is difficult to determine, since there is absolutely no access to the lock mechanism.
A somewhat simplified version of the breakdown occurs when the door does not slam shut completely and gets stuck in that position. Then it is possible to reach the latch from the outside with a sharp object.
To open a jammed door, you must first perform the following steps:
- When the sash is not completely slammed, try to get to the locking device using a steel flat ruler. It may be possible to open it in a similar way to conventional door locks with a latch.
- If the door is completely closed, try to move it to the slightly open position to gain access to the lock. To do this, try pressing the inside and outside handles together or alternately, while simultaneously pushing the door from the inside.
- Try opening the back door with a helper, who will press and release it to get it into position while you try to open the lock.
When simple means do not produce results, the door will have to be opened from inside the cabin, which will require removing its trim.
In practice, this is not easy to do, because the casing is pressed by the sash and it is difficult to pull it out without damage. But there is still no other way out: it is better to damage the inner panel than to mutilate the door itself.
To dismantle the decorative panel, you need to unscrew the armrest handle with a screwdriver, and then the storage shelf located at the bottom of the door card. Then the button that secures the lock from above is unscrewed and removed. Lastly, the window lifter handle and the opening handle frame are removed. Now you need to carefully separate the lining from the body using a pair of flathead screwdrivers and another suitable tool. You may be able to remove the trim without visible damage.
When the decorative panel is removed, access to the lock mechanism from the inside opens, although getting to it is inconvenient. Immediately check whether the rod running from the handle to the lock has fallen off. This is a fairly common malfunction that can be fixed with little effort. Put the rod in place and open the door.
If there are no visible reasons for the breakdown, simply try to open the door from the inside by working on the mechanism with various tools. If necessary, enlist the services of an assistant who will press or pull the door from the outside. Experience shows that such procedures for opening jammed doors can take a lot of time, so you will have to be patient.
Choosing silent locks for interior doors
Probably everyone dreams that their house or apartment, at least at a certain time of the day, will turn into a stronghold of peace and quiet.
No clangs, squeaks, or knocks should distract from a good rest before the upcoming working day. But what to do when your own interior door constantly bothers you with its excessively noisy opening and closing? On the one hand, it seems clear that the metal parts of the lock rub against each other and this is inevitably accompanied by sound, but sometimes you still want silence! Leading manufacturers of locking devices for interior doors have taken care of the needs of people all over the world by coming up with good silent locks, which will be discussed in this article.
Silicone shock absorbers
Silicone shock absorbers are produced on a self-adhesive basis and are used as an addition to the main shock absorption systems. Such a circle is separated from the base and glued to the end of the body or facade.
Some furniture makers limit themselves only to silicone shock absorbers, but they will not ensure smooth closing of doors; they will only muffle the sound of the door when it is closed.

Why is the interior door lock noisy?
The vast majority of interior door locks click quite loudly when opening and closing the door. This sound can be especially annoying in the silence of the night, when someone in the household has woken up and left the room for a walk to the bathroom. Of course, you can not slam the door, but carefully close it by lowering the handle down, pulling the door leaf, but who will do this half asleep at night?
Even a new, correctly installed lock makes a sound when unlocking and locking the door, what can we say about locking devices that have served for more than a year, the noise from which can be heard in all rooms. Why can the castle make noise? Let's list and characterize the reasons.
We have indicated a far from complete list of reasons for the noisy operation of the interior door lock. Depending on the design of the locking device, there may be other reasons, for example, breakage or defect of the gear, displacement of the elements of the locking device, and the like. However, there is no need to be upset if you suddenly notice that the above reason is relevant for your castle. Most breakdowns can be eliminated with your own hands and in the future, during the operation of the locking device, prevent this from happening.
How can I make the lock make less noise?
Experts say that even an ordinary lock can be made almost silent. In this regard, on their part, there are several important recommendations. If you have yet to install an interior door with a lock, then before entrusting this task to anyone, inquire about the qualifications of such specialists. About once every six months, do not be lazy to disassemble the lock for preventive maintenance. Clean its mechanism from dust and dirt, lubricate it (if necessary), tighten the fasteners and check the movement of all moving parts.
What are the components of a door hinge?
The hinge itself consists of three parts, the first is the hinge cup, which is installed in the hole in the door, the second is the hinge arm, which connects the cup to the third part of the hinge with a strike plate. The strike plate is mounted on the side wall of the housing.

We went over the hinges a little, now let's move on to studying the question of how to make the doors close without knocking .
"Quiet" locks for interior doors
The problem of noisy locking devices can be radically solved if you purchase so-called silent locks . Manufacturers offer a considerable range of locks for interior doors that supposedly make no noise at all, but is it worth believing that every such device works without sound? On the Internet you can find a lot of information about cheap Chinese “quiet” plastic locks. The advertisement tells us that all elements of such locking devices are made of special durable plastic, which ensures silent operation of the lock. In fact, such locks are still not silent, but operate no quieter than ordinary metal ones, moreover, they wear out very quickly and fail, in general, another advertising ploy.
Real quiet locks for interior doors should be made of metal and use a permanent magnet as a locking element. What kind of locks of this type are worthy of taking a place on your door?
Adjusting the mechanism
Having installed silent locks-2107 on a car, in order to fully use all the advantages of the mechanisms, you need to configure them correctly. Adjustment is carried out by moving the latch fixing bolt. First you need to let him go a little and close the door. It must fall into place
Then carefully open the door, being careful not to move the bolt. Next, you need to check the quality of the door latch.
If it is not completely satisfactory, then you need to continue tuning. By releasing the bolt and moving it, it is necessary to achieve smooth operation of the mechanism. The door should close with minimal physical impact on it. By repeating the adjustment operation on all doors, you can enjoy the perfect operation of your car's locks.
Tips for choosing a “quiet” lock
Now I would like to outline some general tips regarding choosing a “quiet” lock. These tips were specially formulated by experts to help you.
To summarize, we note that silent locks are not a myth, but very real devices, which have also recently become widespread. The cost of such locks is far from prohibitive; even the best of them can be afforded by almost anyone. Moreover, most of the “quiet” locking devices on the market can be considered quite decent and efficient. So, under these conditions, is it worth continuing to suffer with your old locks on interior doors that make unpleasant noise?

Possible problems
Sometimes, after installing a new lock on a VAZ 2109, the door may not close. The reason is due to errors made during assembly. Most often, people forget to put on the lock rod. In this situation, the lock simply will not open. Remove the lock and install the rod in place.
The lock may also need to be adjusted. This is done using a latch. It is loosened and the lock is moved in the desired direction, achieving optimal performance. Sometimes you have to lengthen or shorten the pull. Your task is to choose its length most optimally.
. If all stages of the work are carried out carefully and correctly, then you will not experience any difficulties. Replacing the door lock cylinder on a VAZ 2109 in this case will happen quite quickly. Once you have done this work, you will be able to repeat it much faster. The best option is to install new parts. Otherwise, you will soon have to disassemble the door again.
Communities › VAZ.EE › Blog › Silent locks. Lubricate, bring to mind.
I walked a long and painful thorny path to silent castles. For those interested, read the earlier blog entry.
So what is the recipe for silent basin locks? The issue is complex, but solutions can be found.
After purchasing silent locks, I did not feel any pleasure from working with them. The only difference was that the loud click of the lock on the finger disappeared, but otherwise no difference was noticed. I was also confused by the fact that the set of locks was not thought out; after screwing them on, the bolts stuck out and the anthers did not hold on.
After a little surfing on the Internet, I found how to improve these very silent locks. The method is very simple, take out two springs and insert one. The effective lock method becomes completely different after this! It closes softly and makes much less noise. However, later pitfalls appear. The standard, poor lubricant of the lock quickly evaporates, and besides, the ingress of dust does not contribute to good operation and the plastic lock begins to jam. For some people (Yarik89), even while moving (more likely during low flight), the doors opened.
So let's start working on the castle!
The first thing we do is take out the extra spring. You can find out how to get information on the Internet. Or you can read it in my blog.
The second thing is to adjust the anthers so that they fit well. To do this, we put the boot on the locks and cut out or drill a hole in place so that it exactly repeats the place on the lock. This can be done with a utility knife (that’s what I did for the first two locks) or drilled with a drill; the plastic is soft and making holes with a drill is not difficult at all.
The third thing you need to do is wrap a little electrical tape around the leg. I don't recommend more than 1.5 turns. Let's look at the photo.
Fourth. Inspired by the idea in the blog of comrade KyCb about working with silicone. I decided to apply all this to work. Actually, I siliconized the cavities of the lock so that the silicone would be pressed against the door and, accordingly, the lock would stand more clearly and less dust would get into it. Many simply installed rubber gaskets for these purposes. However, I’m not a greedy person; I put a lot of silicone in there; I had to trim off the excess with scissors.
The secret to securely attaching hinges
There is such an important point when using hinges - this is the reliability of fastening the doors. Without reliable fastening, the smooth fastening system will be unnecessary.
Hinge Cup Attachment
You can secure the hinge cup to the door using self-tapping screws, but there is a more reliable method of fastening using special spacer plugs and screws.
To install the plugs, you need to drill two holes with a diameter of 8 mm. Find out if such a service is provided in the place where you order drilling for awnings.

Mounting the strike plate
The strike plate can be secured to the side wall using self-tapping screws, Euroscrews, and the most reliable way is with Euroscrews of smaller diameter through spacer plugs.
The structure of the chipboard is loose and a self-tapping screw or Euroscrew may eventually break out of the chipboard and you won’t be able to screw it back in, you’ll have to glue in the chips, re-drill, and then, it won’t last long, you’ll have to change the side wall. Only a bar for spacer plugs will ensure long-lasting and reliable fastening.
Drilling is done with a drill with a diameter of 5 mm, similar to drilling for Euro screws.
