Note that if your car was manufactured after 1993, the filling fluid for it will be R134a freon, otherwise you need to fill the system with R12 freon. Having cooled, the freon condenses and turns into a liquid state, and then enters the receiver-dryer. The refrigerant then passes through the expansion valve and enters the evaporator. Here it turns into gas and cools greatly. At the same time, it cools the evaporator. Thanks to the fan, cooled air is blown from the evaporator and enters the cabin. The cold refrigerant returns to the compressor. So the process is repeated in a circle (the author of the video is L0RlC).

ODS device of Lada Kalina

Kalina 1 and Kalina 2 cars use a liquid cooling system. It consists of an engine jacket, radiator, electric fan, pump (water pump), expansion tank, thermostat and connecting hoses. The coolant moves through two circulation circuits. In a small circle, antifreeze circulates only through the engine jacket, while in a large circle, the liquid passes through the radiator.

Expansion tank

Used to pour liquid into the system. It is made of heat-resistant plastic of a translucent color to allow you to control the level of antifreeze. There is a special pipe on the top through which the tank is connected to the radiator steam outlet.

The tightness of the entire system is ensured by the valve cover, which has inlet and outlet valves. The latter is designed to maintain pressure in the SOD above atmospheric pressure. Due to this, losses in the form of steam are reduced, and the boiling point of the working fluid increases. The exhaust valve of the cover opens when the pressure rises to 1.1 bar, and the inlet valve opens when the pressure drops to 0.13 bar and the engine cools down.

This is a centrifugal pump with blades. It is belt driven from a crankshaft pulley and is included in the gas distribution system. The pump is made of aluminum. This unit cannot be repaired; if it fails, it can only be replaced. Rotation occurs due to a double-row non-separable bearing; its high-temperature lubricant is designed for the entire service life. There is a toothed pulley at the front and an impeller at the rear.

Thermostat

Designed to redistribute coolant flows, it contains a temperature-sensitive element and two valves. When the engine cools down, one of the thermostat valves is in the closed position, and fluid circulates through the motor jacket - only a small circuit is used. As the temperature reaches 85 degrees, the second valve begins to open slightly, allowing antifreeze into the radiator and closing the bypass channel. Full opening occurs at a temperature of 100 degrees. In this case, all the liquid begins to pass through the cooler.

Engine radiator

The heat exchanger can be monolithic aluminum, tubular, or plate type. Its device uses two plastic tanks that are connected by tubes. The upper one is inlet, and the lower one is outlet, through which the cooled liquid is sent back to the engine. Near the first there is a steam outlet connected to the expansion tank. The radiator on Kalina is complemented by an electric fan. There is a drain plug at the bottom of the outlet tank.

The cooling system is complemented by a heater radiator, which is integrated into the ODS and is used to heat the air in the cabin, since hot antifreeze also passes through it. The controller monitors the coolant temperature using a sensor that is installed in the cylinder head and transmits readings to the instrument panel. To transmit a signal to the controller, a sensor installed on the exhaust pipe, near the thermostat, is used.

Differences between modifications with air conditioning

Some configurations of the Lada Kalina are complemented by air conditioning, which is part of the climate control system and is used to cool the air in the cabin. The device cannot operate if the outside temperature is below 5 degrees, the engine is not running, or the heater fan is on. The air conditioning compressor is driven by the engine, and this is the main disadvantage of the installation.

About refilling the air conditioner

You need to pump 500 g of refrigerant into the Priora air conditioner. Until 1995, R12 freon was pumped into air conditioners, but it was considered toxic due to its high fluorine content. Therefore, R134A freon is now in use. Preparing for refueling looks like this:

  • special cleaning foam from a can is pumped into the air conditioner radiator;
  • the radiator closes. The car engine starts and idles. At the same time, the air conditioner turns on. It must run for at least 15 minutes so that the foam passes through the entire recirculation system;
  • vacuum is performed. A pump is connected to the air conditioner, which removes air from the system along with foam and moisture.

Refueling

To refill the air conditioner, the driver must purchase a metrology station and a can of freon.

The station is a system of hoses, adapters and pressure gauges connected to the air conditioner.

  1. The station hose is connected to the low pressure fitting on the air conditioner pipeline (it is usually painted blue or has the English designation “low”).
  2. The engine starts and idles, and the number of revolutions per minute should not be lower than 1400 (for this you will have to fix the gas pedal with something, or ask someone for help).
  3. When the engine is running, maximum recirculation of the air conditioner is turned on, then the low pressure valve at the station smoothly opens.
  4. The freon cylinder is turned upside down, after which the tap is opened on it.
  5. The refrigerant begins to flow from the cylinder into the system. At the same time, the driver controls the pressure using a pressure gauge - it should not exceed 280 kPa.
  6. When the air in the cabin warms up to a temperature of 10–15°C, refueling stops.

"Pitfalls" of using an air conditioner

On a Lada Kalina with a station wagon body and a 1.4 liter engine, the use of air conditioning gives rise to many problems. When the car is fully loaded with passengers in urban conditions and the air conditioning is running at full power, the engine loses its dynamics so noticeably that it may stall when the car starts moving. Fuel consumption in this situation reaches 15 liters per 100 km. However, the air conditioner can be used in other ways, which will give the engine more freedom.

Firstly, you can turn on the air conditioning not when it has already become hot, but at a normal temperature in the cabin, but when the outside air begins to warm up. Ideal if you left in the morning and have to spend a few more hours on the road in the afternoon. A comfortable temperature in the car will be maintained throughout the trip, and engine power will drop slightly.

It is not necessary to turn on the air conditioner immediately after parking the car outdoors. It is best not to start moving immediately, but to stand for a while with the doors open. Only after this can you close the windows and start the engine. Turn on the air recirculation mode, and after 5 minutes the temperature in the cabin will become comfortable, after which the air conditioner should be switched to minimum mode.

The 1.4 8 cl engine on Kalina with the air conditioning on can sometimes sharply gain speed at a constant throttle position, or sometimes lose it, while the driver does not release or press the gas pedal. In some cases, for example when overtaking is necessary, this feature can become an unpleasant surprise. Therefore, when the air conditioning is on in Kalina, it is better to keep a greater distance from other cars.

Installation of foreign-made climate systems

Lada Priora air conditioner "August" is one of the most inexpensive options. If you want to buy a higher quality device, then you can opt for the Hull, Panasonic or Frost systems. But Frost also has its drawbacks: it happens that the installation gets very hot, does not cool the air well, and generally does not cope well with its assigned functions. But even if the unit works well, it will take longer to cool the interior. This is because the compressor itself is not particularly powerful. But despite the disadvantages, Frost also has advantages. When the air conditioning is turned on, it will generally not affect the functionality of the vehicle.

It should also be noted that the air conditioning units of this manufacturer were tested in African countries, and this says a lot. In particular, during testing, the installation cooled the interior well, while the engine of cars of various brands did not overheat. You will have to disassemble almost half of the car and spend a whole day on it.

This step is mainly taken by those people who purchased a car when it was not equipped with air conditioning, or who did not have the money to purchase a Lada Kalina with an already installed refrigerator. This includes those who did not like the standard climate control system. To install an air conditioner on Kalina, you will need to remove the dashboard, but in some cases it is not necessary to completely disassemble the panel.

First, you can remove the glove compartment and bend the plastic plate hiding behind it. The stand plate is also removed after unscrewing the screws holding it using a screwdriver. Remove the dashboard and air filter housing in the engine compartment. Return to the cabin and remove the heater motor housing. To do this, you will have to tinker a little with the sound insulation that prevents you from unscrewing it. Bend back a small section of the soundproofing coating, unscrew what is needed with a ratchet, move the heater receiver, and remove the connecting air duct.

In order for the Shumka to fit under the air conditioner, it must be carefully trimmed. When you move the dashboard and remove the center console, you will see the very place where the evaporator of the cooling system fits perfectly. After this, you need to install a temperature sensor under the console. Some Kalinas may not have it, but you still have to install it. Be sure to seal the space between the engine compartment and the evaporator with a soundproofing coating.

Particular attention should be paid to the installation of Kalina electrical wiring. It must be done in such a way that nothing interferes. It is possible that the crankcase protection will also have to be temporarily dismantled for this reason. Only after these operations are the pipeline laid and final assembly carried out.
