The need to install air conditioning in a car arises for many modern car owners, especially when it comes to older cars. It is difficult to dispute the feasibility of the installation, because in hot weather one of the main indicators of car comfort is the air conditioning system. Is it possible to install air conditioning on a VAZ 2110 and how to do it - find out from this material.

Air conditioner device
The main element of any car air conditioner is the blown condenser. Airflow is carried out by a plastic fan, the motor of which is connected to the on-board network.
A compressor is connected to the condenser, which is responsible for circulating freon in the system. An additional element is a dehumidifier, the purpose of which is clear from its name. All these parts are connected via tubes to air ducts through which hot (or cold) air enters the car interior.
Operating principle of the air conditioner
The main task of the air conditioner is to ensure constant circulation of freon in the cooling circuit. In essence, it is not very different from an ordinary household refrigerator in the kitchen. This is a sealed system. Inside it is freon mixed with a special oil that does not freeze even at very low temperatures.
By turning on this device, the driver actually turns on the compressor, which begins to pump pressure into one of the tubes. As a result, the refrigerant in the system enters the condenser, and from there, through the dryer, it reaches the ventilation system in the cabin and enters the heat exchanger. Once there, the refrigerant begins to intensively remove heat from the cabin. At the same time, the freon itself becomes very hot and passes from a liquid state to a gaseous state. This gas leaves the heat exchanger and enters the ventilated condenser. There, the refrigerant quickly cools down, becomes liquid and goes back into the cabin heat exchanger.

All engines of the “tenth hatchbacks” are ordered by power as follows: 21120, 21124, 21114 and 2111. They develop 93, 90, 81 and 77 “forces”. The graph shows how power varies with rpm.
The first two engines, 20 and 124, are 16-valve. Both belong to the Euro-3 class.
Engines 21124 of later years of production meet Euro-4 standards. They have an improved catalyst installed. The ECU unit was also installed differently, updated.
The pistons of the 124 series engines have grooves for the valves. Simply put, the internal combustion engine of the VAZ-21120 is plug-in (valve bending as a result of a broken timing belt, the valves will need to be replaced, and then it depends), and 21124 is not plug-in (does not bend the valve). Let's estimate the torque.
The most interesting thing here is the VAZ-21120 engine. In terms of “low-end traction” it is not much inferior to 8-valve engines.

The lower the compression ratio, the more “omnivorous” the engine will be in relation to fuel.
Is it possible to install an air conditioner on a VAZ 2110?
Yes, the design of the VAZ 2110 car initially included the possibility of installing an air conditioner. Moreover, when the “tens” were still being produced (and they stopped producing them in 2009), the car could be purchased complete with factory air conditioning. But not everyone could afford such a purchase, since the price of the car increased by almost a third. That is why many VAZ 2110 owners had to install air conditioners later. To install this device in a car, it does not have to be modified. There is no need to make additional ventilation holes in the dashboard. There is no need to lay separate lines for pipes and electrical wiring in the engine compartment. There is already a place for all this. This means that installing an air conditioner in a VAZ 2110 is completely legal, and no questions will arise for the car owner during inspection.
About the features of installing air conditioning on cars with different engines
The VAZ 2110 was equipped with various engines - 8 and 16 valves. They differed not only in power, but also in size. These points should be taken into account when choosing an air conditioner. Here's what to remember:
- The condenser for the air conditioner for a 16-valve engine is larger. It is 4 cm wider, 2 cm taller and 920 grams heavier;
- all mounting holes in the condenser for a 16-valve car are shifted 1.5 cm downward;
- The pipes for the cooling circuit of a 16-valve car, as well as the electrical wiring harness, are approximately 8 cm longer.
Otherwise, air conditioners for cars with different engines are identical, and they have no fundamental design differences.
About choosing an air conditioner for a VAZ 2110
If the driver decides to install the air conditioner on the “ten”, the choice of models will be small:
- "Frost." The most popular manufacturer among domestic car enthusiasts. It produces air conditioners for many VAZ models, including the VAZ 2110. Catalog number - 217ОF-8100046–83. The advantage is the affordable price, which starts from 12 thousand rubles. The disadvantage is the lack of a damper on the heater. The device is also noted to be highly inert (i.e., the air conditioner takes 2–3 minutes to change temperature). But these shortcomings can hardly be called significant, and Frost today is the optimal choice for the VAZ 2110;

The importance of the device parameters lies in the fact that without them there is no way to synchronize the car’s ignition system and the correct operation of the engine injectors, i.e. set the desired concentration of the air-droplet mixture supplied to the engine cylinders
Finding this sensor is easy. It is located on the high tide near the generator drive pulley.
During operation of the VAZ 2110 camshaft sensor, the price of which is acceptable for Russian motorists, the following problems may arise:
- During operation of the vehicle, dust and mud deposits remain on the product, falling onto it from the timing belt. This is facilitated by oil leakage from the over-valve cover of the power unit. These deposits on the camshaft sensor can lead to difficulties when starting the vehicle, low-power acceleration, low engine speeds that cannot be gained when the tachometer “gives” no more than 3.5 thousand rpm. In this case, the emergency device goes off, the on-board electronic device displays an error for some time, and then classifies it as a malfunction of the camshaft sensor, which in itself is nonsense, because With such a defect, starting the engine is absolutely impossible. If the product fails while driving, the car functions, but after stopping and turning off the engine, it is not possible to start it. If the engine continues to function, the camshaft sensor is working properly, so the defect should be looked for elsewhere.
- The vehicle is moving normally. The electronic device of the car begins to signal about product defects; to stop the receipt of erroneous signals from the detector, you should check the fastening of the wiring in the power compartment. Vibration friction during vehicle movement can cause the absence or weakening of one of the contacts. Additionally, you should sand the battery terminal from suspected oxidation and test the wire connections from the product to the on-board electronic device (front panel).
- The car does not start, attempts to revive the vehicle's engine do not lead to success. To solve this problem, you need to test the electrical wiring and its attachment to the contacts. Check the contact of the sensor with the collector, otherwise the product may fail.
Installing an air conditioner on a VAZ 2110
First, let's decide on the tools and consumables. Here's what we need:
- set of open-end wrenches;
- flat screwdriver;
- beard;
- hammer;
- new air conditioner with all components.
Sequence of operations
There are several preparatory steps required before installation can begin.
- The air conditioner mount must be installed on the tension roller. To do this, use a hexagon to unscrew the 5 bolts holding the timing panel fastening.
- An additional hole needs to be made in the shield, the marks for which have already been applied. All you need to do is install the beard in the marked place and knock out part of the shield.
Replacing a light bulb through the hood
First, open the hood, find the plug. It should be located almost in the center of the engine compartment. Now you need to remove it. This can be done with your hands if you have free access (your hand can reach it). If not, you need to get rid of the interfering objects. It could be the battery, or it could be something else. In any case, this item must either be completely removed or moved.
If you have freed up space and can unscrew the plug, you need to remove the seal. To do this, you can simply pull the side rubber “handles”. Now you need to unplug the plug from the connector. In order to get to the light bulb, you need to remove the clamp. Turn it until you hear a click. The light bulb is accessible and can be replaced.

Now you can get the headlight. This must be done very carefully, since the clamps that hold the headlight are very flimsy and can be easily broken. Therefore, take it out slowly, lifting it up a little.
Once you have the headlight in your hands, you need to remove the cover to get to the bulb. And then everything went according to plan: removing the plug, wire clamp and replacing the light bulb itself.
About connecting the air conditioner to the car's electrical network
The connection diagram may be different. It depends both on the selected air conditioner model and on the modification of the VAZ 2110 engine. For this reason, it is not possible to write a single instruction manual for all models of air conditioners and cars. Details will have to be clarified in the attached instructions. However, there are several general rules that should be followed when connecting any air conditioners:
- The first thing to do is always connect the evaporation units. Current is usually supplied to them from the cigarette lighter (some drivers power the unit directly from the ignition switch, but this option is used less frequently);
- the “mass” of the evaporation unit is supplied to any part of the body;
- power is supplied to the compressor electromagnetic unit in the same way;
- the fan used to blow the condenser must be connected via a fuse;
- If connected correctly, after pressing the air conditioning activation button, the driver always hears a distinct click from the electromagnetic unit of the generator. If there is a click, it means that power is supplied to the compressor. And a second after the click, the fans on the condenser and evaporative unit should start working. If they turn on, it means the circuit is assembled correctly.

The Lada of the tenth family in the hatchback body is the VAZ-2112 model. All cars of this family were produced until 2009. The range of engines included four options. Among them, by the way, were two 8-valve engines. Below we present the characteristics of 16-valve engines, but engines with 8 valves do not deserve attention. Refueling
Refueling the air conditioner must be done using special equipment, and this should be done by a specialist. Refueling in a garage is possible, but not at all rational. To carry it out, you will need to purchase equipment and refrigerant (which is not so easy to obtain). One refill will require about 600 grams of R134A freon.
It contains fluorine, which is harmful to the body and must be handled with extreme caution. Taking into account all these points, the most rational option would be to take the car to a service center.
Here are the main stages of the refueling process:
- creating a vacuum inside the air conditioning system. This is done in order to ensure its tightness;
- special oil is pumped into the system to dilute freon;
- freon is supplied to the circuits;
- The system is again checked for leaks. If there are no leaks, the driver can only pay for the services of a specialist. They cost from 1500 rubles.
Some conclusions
All VAZ-2112 hatchback engines differ in characteristics, and the differences are significant. It seems that the best option would be a 16-valve 1.5-liter engine. But the 21124 (1.6) engine has its advantages:
- Rated power is achieved at 5000 rpm rather than 5600;
- A broken timing belt does not lead to bending of the valves and their replacement;
- It is acceptable to use 92nd gasoline.
Any 21124 engine can be converted to Euro-4 or meets these standards immediately.
The appearance of the 1.5 liter engine inspires respect. But if you remember about bending the valves, the choice becomes difficult to make. A steel receiver and a beautiful schedule are not everything.
Various nuances
Motor 21124 is more modern than its brother. It has spark plugs with individual coils installed on it. Experienced craftsmen also know about the tuning possibilities specific to the 21120 engine (for example, installing a turbine). In defense of the latter, we can say the following: the service life of the two engines under consideration is approximately the same. After the first 120 thousand, the 20th engine deserves a rating of “4.5 out of 5”.
On the secondary market, VAZ-21120 and 21126 (Priora) engines are valued almost equally. But the VAZ-21124 unit is in short supply. Draw conclusions.
Climate control in the VAZ 2110
Installing a climate control system in a VAZ 2110 today is very exotic. The reason is simple: the game is not worth the candle.
