How to choose and replace the battery on a Lada Priora car

The Lada Priora car is one of the most budget-friendly car options on the Russian market. It's quite difficult to find a worthy alternative for that kind of money.

Yes, you can find a huge number of shortcomings in this vehicle. But there are just as many advantages here. All the disadvantages are largely explained by the low price.

Priora became one of the stages of modernization and renewal of production of the domestic company AvtoVAZ, which is based in Tolyatti. Kalina appeared first, which happened in 2004. Another 3 years later, a model called Priora was released. From 2007 to 2013, Lada Priora was produced without any major changes. But in 2013 the model was updated. This was not a change of generations, but restyling. Moreover, it clearly benefited the car. The Priora is still produced in this form and is sold very successfully.

Car owners who bought a Priora secondhand or at a car dealership sooner or later face the task of purchasing a new battery. This is due to the fact that the Lada Priora does not have the best battery under the hood from the factory. It fully corresponds to the budget of the car itself and allows you to do without replacement for an average of 3 years. Rarely does a standard battery last up to 5 years.

Finding a worthy alternative is not so difficult. But here you need to take into account some important points.

Features of the factory battery

To select a new power source, you should find out what standard battery is installed on the Priora from the factory, that is, directly from the assembly line.

The Tolyatti plant uses a unified platform for installing batteries. This applies to the Priora, Granta and Kalina models.

This is due to the fact that these machines use identical starters, generators and power plants. That’s why the battery tray is the same everywhere. How the requirements for the characteristics and parameters of the battery turned out to be the same.

The first step is to look at the characteristics of the standard battery. They are as follows on Lada Priora cars:

  1. Manufacturer. This is the Russian company Akom.
  2. Technology. The standard battery is based on calcium technology. Here, part of the lead plates is coated with antimony, and the other half with calcium. This makes the battery low maintenance. The liquid evaporates, but it happens quite slowly. Therefore, the design of the battery provides for the presence of unscrewing plugs for access to the banks.
  3. Capacity. It is important to know what capacity the standard battery is used. This is 55 Ah. Not bad for a Lada Priora, but not always enough. When purchasing a replacement battery, you usually choose a battery with improved characteristics.
  4. Starting current. This is also known as cold cranking current. Under the hood of the Lada Priora there is a battery in which the starting current is 425 A. This is not enough for Russian operating conditions. Especially for a used car. It's better to take more.
  5. Polarity. The motorist will also be interested in what battery polarity is provided on the Priora. As with all domestic cars, the polarity is straight everywhere.
  6. Size. The dimensions of the battery for Lada Priora cars are 242x175x190 mm.

The full name of the standard battery for Lada Priora is Akom Standard Sa 6ST-55 VL.

Knowing the polarity, dimensions, capacity and other characteristics that a standard battery for the Lada Priora model has, it will be much easier to choose a worthy analogue.

In what cases is it necessary to change the original battery?

The need to change the battery of a Lada Granta, Lada Largus or Kalina arises only in one case - if the battery cannot hold a charge. Before changing the battery, you need to find out what is the cause of the discharge. If the battery on a Priora, Kalina or Lada Largus discharges quickly, this indicates that the internal structure of the battery is already damaged. Accordingly, such a battery will not allow the engine to start, and full operation of the car with such a battery will simply be impossible. After all, even if it is partially charged, but quickly discharges, when you turn on the stove, headlights and other energy consumers, self-discharge will occur even faster.

It also makes sense to think about replacement if you have driven the existing battery in your Lada Largus or Kalina for more than five years. On average, the service life of devices varies around 3-5 years, depending on the type and manufacturer. If the battery has already expired, then most likely in the near future you will still have to change it.

Battery selection

The motorist himself will decide which battery to install in the Priora.

But it is worth giving a few recommendations that will help make the choice more correct and rational.

You can go through the main characteristics and ultimately decide which battery would be best for your Priora:

  1. Polarity. Only straight. There is no point in experimenting with batteries that have reverse polarity. The mistake of many lies in the decision to adapt a battery with inappropriate polarity, turning the battery over, or extending the standard wire. You shouldn't do this. Take only batteries with straight polarity for Priora.
  2. Capacity. Many people choose the same battery for the Priora that comes from the factory. But it is better to choose a battery with a slightly increased capacity. This is especially true in cases where additional equipment is installed on the machine, an air conditioner is included in the package, etc. If the standard battery has 55 Ah, then it is better to replace it with a power source with a capacity of 60–75 Ah.
  3. Starting current. It is not fundamentally important whether there is an 8 or 16 valve engine under the hood. In both cases, there must be a battery with a cold cranking current of at least 425 A. But in real operating conditions this is often not enough. It is better to take a battery with parameters no lower than 500 A.
  4. Dimensions. In this case, you cannot go beyond the factory limits. Otherwise, the battery simply won’t fit if it turns out to be larger. But it will not be possible to fix smaller batteries either. It is prohibited to violate the recommendations here.

Drivers should look again at the technical documentation and find out which battery should initially be installed on their Priora. Based on this information, you should select a battery with slightly improved characteristics.

If the power source has the proper starting current and capacity, then there will be significantly fewer problems with starting in winter, even after a long period of parking, than when operating a Priora with a standard battery.

Common battery problems and how to fix them

In what other cases may replacement be required:

  1. If cracks appear on the device body. Due to mechanical damage to the case, electrolyte may leak from the structure of the device, and accordingly, this will lead to a decrease in charging. Operation of the device with a damaged housing is not allowed. If the damage is minor, you can try to eliminate it using cold welding, but as practice shows, this is not always possible.
  2. If the battery is constantly draining. It happens that at the most crucial moment the battery loses its charge. Charging can fail for various reasons, ranging from cracks on the case to destruction of the plates inside the structure. In case of such a problem, first of all you need to charge the device; for this, a charger is used. Perhaps this method will allow you to replenish the charge, but if the reason lies in the destroyed plates, then replacement still cannot be avoided.
  3. Another problem in the operation of the device is the oxidation of contacts. For this reason, the connection between the battery and the vehicle’s on-board network may be disrupted, and accordingly, this may lead to the inoperability of some devices. An oxidation problem can be caused by evaporation of the electrolyte. If you notice that the terminals on the device have oxidized, then they need to be cleaned, only carefully so as not to remove the top layer of the outputs. For cleaning you can use a hard toothbrush or sandpaper.
  4. Destruction of plates. This problem usually occurs as a result of regular charging and discharging cycles. If the plates begin to collapse, there is no way to fix this problem; in any case, it will be necessary to replace it.
  5. Electrolyte boiling away. A lack of working fluid in the battery banks can also cause the device to malfunction. To avoid such a problem, you need to periodically check the fluid level in the device. The electrolyte must cover all jars, and it must also be clean. If you notice that the solution level is insufficient, you need to replenish it yourself; for this, use ordinary distilled water.

Analogues of a standard battery

The easiest way is to take exactly the same battery that is installed on the Lada Priora from the factory in Tolyatti. There will definitely not be any problems finding and purchasing such a battery. The Akom company continues to produce them, and they are available in almost every specialty store.

But objectively, the factory battery has rather weak characteristics. Therefore, the correct solution would be to exceed the standard parameters.

There are quite a lot of worthy analogues. The price range is from 2.5 to 6 thousand rubles.

The list of priority options for replacing the standard battery for Lada Priora cars should include the following battery models:

  • Autofan 60L. A simple, inexpensive, but quite effective battery. Has characteristics of 60 Ah and 470 A;
  • Uno 60L. Another interesting budget analogue. Here the same 60 Ah, but the starting current has increased to 480 A;
  • RUSBAT 60L. In fact, a full-fledged analogue of the previous battery;
  • Mutlu Mega Calcium 60L and In the first case it is 60 Ah and 540 A. In the second it is 63 Ah and 600 A. The difference in price is about 1000 rubles;
  • Thomas 60L. A very good replacement option. The battery produces 60 Ah and 580 A starting current;
  • AkTech Classic 64L. Russian battery with a solid capacity of 64 Ah and the same decent starting current, which is 640 A;
  • Bosch S4 006. The battery model is designed for 60 Ah and produces 540 A of cold cranking current;
  • Akom EFB. Versions 60L and 62L are suitable for Priora. An improved liquid battery, generating from 60 to 62 Ah and from 560 to 580 A. If we take an analogue from Akom, it is better to give preference to EFB technology rather than WET;
  • Inci Aku Formul A 60L and One of the best options in terms of price and quality ratio. According to the characteristics, it is 60 Ah and 530 A., or 62 Ah and 540 A. Costs an average of 5 thousand rubles;
  • TAB Polar 60 and 66L. Two models costing up to 5.5 thousand rubles. They produce from 60 to 66 Ah with a cold cranking current of 600 and 620 A, respectively;
  • AlphaLine Ultra 68L. Quite a powerful 68 Ah battery. Here the cold cranking current is the highest in the list and is 680 A;
  • Varta Silver D39. Provides 63 Ah capacity at a starting current of 610 A;
  • Moll MG 62L. The most expensive, but at the same time the most reliable battery. Battery characteristics 62 Ah and 600 A.

The assortment is really extensive. But you won’t have to spend more than 6,000 rubles.

Yes, you can take frankly cheap analogues costing up to 3,000 rubles. But such batteries will definitely be no better than a factory battery, and in some respects they will even be significantly inferior to a standard power source.

It is recommended to choose a battery for Lada Priora from among batteries costing 4.5–5 thousand rubles. They have an optimal balance between cost, quality and performance characteristics.

But the final decision will still be made by the owner of the Lada Priora himself.

Selecting and purchasing a new battery for Priora

Since my friend doesn’t particularly like to understand the technical aspects of his car, out of habit, he asked me to choose a new battery for him. Well, it’s not convenient to refuse, although we often have to help him, so we went to the store together and looked at what was on the store windows.

The budget for the purchase was 3,000 rubles, and for this money you could get a battery of good quality, and if you don’t consider the SILVER class, then you could get a simply gorgeous battery. So, from the entire model range that was presented on the counter, I liked three manufacturers: the well-known Bosch, the German VARTA and Tyumen, which was also among the leaders in some tests of past years from the same magazine “Behind the Wheel”.

But I didn’t want to consider the domestic one because of an initially biased attitude. As for Bosch, for 2800 rubles you could get an excellent option with a starting current of 480 Amperes and a capacity of 55 Ampere hour. But an external examination showed that the battery had been in the store for more than 3 months and I didn’t want to take such a copy.

And now about VARTA. Of course, if there was free money, there could not be another purchase option, since this manufacturer is considered the best in its business and is exclusively engaged in the production of this type of goods.

Of the options that were on display, the cheapest was priced at 3,200 rubles from the Black Dynamic C 15 series. This series is intended for cars with low energy consumption, which, in principle, can be attributed to the Lada Priora and many of our domestic cars.

Moreover, the equipment of my friend’s car was “standard” and he did not have any extra electrical appliances: no climate control, no heated seats, etc.... So this option was just an ideal choice, but it’s just a little expensive!

In the end, I managed to persuade my friend to spend another 200 rubles, but to take a worthwhile thing, which in a normal situation could be enough for 5 years of car operation. Moreover, I simply haven’t heard any bad reviews about this company among my friends, and I haven’t come across anything negative about these batteries online.

In practice, it performed just fine, with 5 days of idle time on the street, the car started without any hint of fatigue and it turned quite well. Let me remind you that the starting current of this battery is 480 Amperes, which is much higher than on the factory AKOM. In general, we were pleased with the choice; you don’t mind spending the money if you know that you bought the real thing.
