Lada Granta for 200,000 rubles: does it make sense to buy it

The debut of the Lada Grant took place back in 2011 at one of the automobile exhibitions of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant products. The range of models is typical: sedan, hatchback, sport.

The price for the basic configuration started from 400,000 thousand rubles per copy. Despite the budget price, not everyone could afford to buy a new car. An alternative option is a used car.

Buying a new Lada Granta is a waste of money. I'll tell you why

Every time I look at the best-selling new cars, I am surprised.
How Lada Granta remains a sales leader in 2022. Moreover, with a gap of 20 thousand from Lada Vesta. Let me remind you that Granta costs from 435 thousand! For a new car of such quality and absolutely unpresentable appearance.

So, let's take a closer look at why buying a new grant is stupid:

As I wrote above, the main problem why you should not buy this car is the price. Yes, of course, you are unlikely to find a new car cheaper on the market. But is Granta worth the money? This is a completely different question.

If you are going to buy a grant, then it is worth considering a used option. At the same time, you will save about 100 thousand. Agree, not a bad bonus. Moreover, most likely you will not take the most budget model. Which can also be considered a profitable investment.

Specifications

Of course, people who buy this car are unlikely to expect anything incredible. This is understandable, a car at such a price cannot be something incredible. But 87 hp in 2022, are you serious?

This car doesn't pull, it doesn't pull at all. That's why she can't be killed. You can drive it for at least 200 or 300 thousand and not worry about anything. And even if something happens, you can easily put everything in order.

But if in any case you are not insured against breakdowns, and grants have a fairly long service life, then why not consider the used option. There is a clear cost saving.

Just taking out a loan for a new grant, well, that’s strange. With our meager salaries, you will pay these 435 thousand for 10 years.

You can consider the option of used foreign cars for the same money. So at least you will enjoy the ride. But of course it’s stupid to convince others; everyone chooses what they like.

Inferior to competitors in many respects

The car is in the cheap segment, so again you don’t have to wait for anything. But its closest competitors, which will be slightly higher in price, are simply head and shoulders ahead of this car. Well, seriously, 435 thousand rubles, 87 hp. and complete lack of security.

Ps yes, if you didn’t know, then the grant in this component is one of the worst in our market. There are already many reviews that confirm my words.

I'm not even talking about appearance. Absolutely not presentable appearance. In 2022, stamping such banks is no longer relevant. Yes, now Granta has acquired a modern design, similar to Vesta. But it looks like a cheap copy of Vesta.

It is also worth noting that in the maximum configuration the Grant will cost about 680 thousand! And this is the price of Vesta.

As for the configuration, it’s generally a controversial point. The cheapest plastic, absolute simplicity of the interior. In any configuration.

Yes, the grant generally loses little in appearance over time. Cheap and rough plastic will probably outlive more than one owner, so even after 100 and 200 thousand km, the car will look almost the same.

True, it will feel like you are driving a tractor, but that’s another question. As for me, it is not much different from the new one.

What would you like to say in the end? No, this is not simple negativity towards AvtoVAZ. I just want people to invest their money more consciously or something.

From 435 thousand to 680 thousand rubles for a new Grant, well, it’s just ridiculous. Therefore, I personally think that it is better to invest in a used foreign car. Well, or at least Vesta. Granta has outlived its usefulness and is definitely not worth the money. But as they say, there are so many people, so many opinions.

Tips for purchasing a car

Connoisseurs of the Russian automobile industry advise purchasing cars with low mileage and low equipment. Why is this so? The cost of small spare parts for Lada is minimal. If you have a good service station nearby or your own knowledge, you can make an ideal car from a Lada at a minimal price. But if vital parts of the Granta liftback fail, you will have to buy almost the same car, since the cost of moving parts forms the basis of the pricing policy for this model.

A car with high mileage will be an eternal “guest” in the garage, since everything breaks down one by one and there are no guarantees or guesses as to what will fail next time. Experienced sellers advise purchasing used liftbacks in the summer or early autumn in order to check how obedient the car is and how quickly it heats up. By the way, if the car was purchased second-hand, you need to change the locks and alarm system to prevent it from suddenly “disappearing.”

This can especially affect those who, for certain reasons, travel by proxy or have not yet signed a purchase and sale agreement. Usually this is saving through tax evasion, but very often it turns against the buyer. In general, nothing changes in the used car market except prices. The main thing when buying a car is to think about yourself, not about the seller.

You purchase a vehicle for yourself and for your own money. If the seller refuses to take you for a ride in the car before making a deposit or does not want to open the hood, then it makes sense to look for another option. In addition, under no circumstances should you make a payment and not pick up the car, for example, before signing the documents. This kind of abuse of trust is still used by scammers, and it is virtually impossible to find them later.

It is recommended to carry out a routine inspection at a service station immediately after purchase, since the car has already been in use. We need to find weak points and eliminate them quickly, so as not to get into trouble at the most inopportune moment. Don't forget about cleanliness. It makes sense to change the upholstery of the seats and trunk, vacuum well and wash the entire interior, not forgetting even the most inaccessible places. Good luck with your choice!

Is Granta worth buying in 2022?

Hello everyone, most young drivers in our country only dream of owning a new car. They don’t care at all that this is a Lada Granta, which is being slandered by the owners of Korean cars, or by public transport passengers in general. An adequate portion of drivers understand that the Lada Granta is not ideal, but this is a new car that will not be very annoying in terms of maintenance. Unfortunately, this is a technologically very old machine, but at the same time it is in demand. So, today I will try to answer the question: Is Granta worth buying in 2022? Enjoy reading.

Let me start with the fact that this car has a huge number of pros and cons. Some people love this car, others hate it. To answer the question, let’s look at the pros and cons of this car.

Firstly the price. Despite the constant price increases, the Lada Grenada still remains the most affordable new car in our country. For the simplest configuration you will have to pay more than 500 thousand rubles.

Secondly - capacity. Unfortunately, the Granta platform does not provide for large space in the cabin. Rear passengers will be very uncomfortable. But at the same time, the trunk capacity is very large - 480 liters, which is enough to accommodate at least 10 bags with things and go on vacation.

Thirdly – technology. No matter how strange it may sound, the fact that Granta is technologically stuck in the 90s cannot but rejoice. Because there is practically nothing to break in this car. The car has minimal electronics, and the powertrain and transmission have been in production for at least 30 years.

Fourthly – content. We all know very well that in modern conditions you can buy almost any car, this is not a problem, but you may not be able to maintain it, since fuel consumption, transport tax and repairs can ruin you. Granta in this regard is unrealistically budget-friendly, since the tax for it per year is around 1000 rubles, fuel consumption on the highway does not exceed 6 liters, and regarding repairs, nothing expensive will break in it for the first two years.

Now let's move on to the cons:

There are only two of them: quality and comfort.

Lada, from the 90s to this day, has been criticized for its quality. The thing is that it is assembled from a huge number of components. Which are produced by different factories. Thus, in one batch of cars, one will travel 400 thousand km. eight will travel 250 thousand km, and one will settle down without traveling even 50 thousand km.

Granta’s comfort is also bad. On the one hand, it has comfortable options, and they certainly increase the level of comfort. On the other hand, there is a lack of sound insulation and body design. Because of which the wind is always blowing in the cabin, this car is not allowed to be called comfortable.

Thus, it turns out that the Granta is a cheap, simple and unpretentious car, in which, due to its cheapness, there is no comfort. Therefore, the question is whether it is worth buying it or not? The answer is simple - if you have money for a new Korean or at least a Vesta, then it is better to overpay and get a more comfortable car, and if among the new cars you only have enough for a Grant, then of course it is better to buy it than an old foreign car.

The hum from the rear turned out to be just a consequence of wear on the wheel bearing, which costs 550 rubles. And floating speed is the result of the death of the oxygen sensor, or, in common parlance, the lambda probe (950 rubles). Apart from the ABS error that appeared after hitting a cardboard box, which damaged the right rear wheel sensor connector, that’s all. At 15,000, 30,000 and 45,000 km, maintenance was carried out, which included changing the oil and filters - in addition to diagnosing and eliminating the above-described faults, of course. Each kilometer of our Grant's run from the range of 15,000–60,000 cost 2 rubles 84 kopecks.

This does not take into account the cost of gasoline for the 60-hour “Behind the Wheel” marathon (0–10,000 km), mileage to Norway (10,000–15,000 km), as well as the cost of compulsory motor liability insurance and comprehensive insurance policies.

The cost of 1 km of Lada Granta over 5 years of operation was 3.78 rubles.

Body

Like any other car, a used Grant should be assessed first and foremost by the condition of the body. At the time of writing, Grants were offered only in sedan and liftback bodies (from now on, hatchbacks and station wagons will be added to them, in the past - Kalina). In my opinion, the liftback is more practical, looks more modern, and with it you will almost certainly not run into a former cab driver from a taxi company.

If you want your car to serve you faithfully for a long time, try to choose a copy with an undamaged body. The check includes inspection of the gaps between body elements, the presence of non-factory welds, and the absence of different colors in the paint. Earlier, my colleague Stanislav Panin told in detail how to avoid running into a repainted body. The task is made easier by the fact that few people strive to restore inexpensive domestically produced cars to zero, so that traces of repair are absolutely not visible. So there are only two options. Either the car is truly “unbeaten and unpainted”, or the traces of body repairs will be relatively clearly visible.

Let's sum it up

Lada Granta is a budget car with an optimal price-quality ratio. On the road, this vehicle behaves confidently and has good handling. The car is able to accelerate quickly, without sudden jolts, and the speed changes easily. In addition, this car differs from competitors in the same price group in its increased traction, which makes it a more practical option for harsh winters. The ergonomics of the interior, laconic but expressive design, good assembly - all these are arguments in favor of purchasing this particular model.

Power unit

As in the entire global automotive industry, the Granta design has a rule: the simpler the unit, the more reliable it is. Although, unfortunately, the eight-valve Grant engines have already sipped the fruits of modernization. This includes a reduction in the width of the drive belt to 17 mm instead of the previous 19 mm, and a lightweight piston group with narrow connecting rods that dangle freely along the axis of the crankshaft, and pistons that meet the valves when the belt breaks.

These are all the trends of the new time, as well as a departure from the really good old and reliable VAZ-21083 engine. But sixteen-valve engines, being only slightly more powerful, have a complex design with the only advantage being the presence of hydraulic valve lifters. This eliminated the need to adjust them. However, the loads on the lightweight piston group have increased.

When inspecting specific cars, it is better to give preference to the engine that idles smoothly, picks up speed well when you press the gas pedal, accepts the load smoothly and without failure, and provides acceptable dynamics. The engine should not leak oil, and it is undesirable to see noticeable smoke from the exhaust pipe. It's very good if you measure the compression. At the same time, you will appreciate the oiliness of the candles. The difference between the cylinders should be no more than 0.5–0.7 bar, and the value itself should be at least 11, and preferably 12 bar.

Gearboxes were installed on the car in two modifications - with a traction drive and a cable drive. Traction drive is a thing of the past. Fuzzy switching on, a lever that dangles when the power unit oscillates, difficult adjustments that give little effect. The cable-controlled gearbox is almost like a foreign car. Communication between the driver and the gearbox (at least with a working one) became like in a normal car. During a test drive, evaluate how fully the clutch is depressed (reverse gear should engage without a rattle) and the operation of the forward gear synchronizers. Particular attention is paid to the second gear synchronizer: this is the eternal weak point of VAZ front-wheel drive gearboxes.

Comparative characteristics

The advantages of the Lada Granta lie in its dimensions: length - 4260 mm, width - 1700 mm, height - 1500 mm. Ground clearance is 170 mm. The original hood and aerodynamic front bumper are the external features of the Lada Granta sedan model. The luxury version is equipped with PTF. Any model of the family under consideration is equipped with numerous galvanized parts. The car body is treated with a special anti-corrosion substance.

Granta is easy to maintain (unlike Kalina). The number of parts in the 1st car is much less than in the other model. Due to the reduction of parts (from 59 to 39 pieces), the new torpedo is presented in the form of a monolithic structure. The quality of the plastic elements used in the interior of the Lada Granta has significantly improved; there are no gaps. The dashboard with a minimal number of information instruments replicates the Kalina torpedo.

Due to the large side mirrors, the driver has a good view. Other advantages include the presence of an immobilizer, an LCD display and a spacious interior of the car. It is equipped with a spacious trunk with a volume of 480 liters. The rear seat can accommodate 2 passengers up to 180 cm tall at the same time, and if necessary, it can be easily folded.

Among the disadvantages of the design, Lada Granta car owners highlight the close location of 2 cup holders near the gearbox. In practice, using such niches is inconvenient. During use, the upholstery of soft seats wears out. The manufacturer did not provide lumbar support and head restraints in the rear seats.

Chassis

Many elements of the car's chassis can be inspected even without the help of a service center or a lift. All pendants are so simple that small flaws should not become an obstacle to purchase: they can be repaired quickly and inexpensively. You just need to make sure that, for example, a strongly and unevenly balding tire was not the result of a serious accident with deformation of the mounting points of the suspension parts.

I would advise choosing a car modification with ABS. Of course, you can do without it in modern heavy traffic, but extending the compulsory motor vehicle insurance policy is painfully expensive, and you can easily drive into the rear of the car in front and not meet the limit of a regular “motor vehicle” license.

What to look for when choosing a used model

Before purchasing a technical device, especially a used one, it is recommended to hire a service center specialist for help. This will help to carry out high-quality comprehensive diagnostics, visually assess the general technical condition of the car, and identify most of the breakdowns and defects.

If you have your own experience, it is not at all necessary to use the services of specialists, but it is advisable. Typical vulnerabilities of Grant Sport used:

  1. wheel arches: places where corrosion and deposits form;
  2. joints of body parts, seams, openings;
  3. rubber seals for windshield, rear and side windows;
  4. leakage of the front drive seal on the left/right side;
  5. degree of wear of the drive belt;
  6. corrosion of the “cups” of the rear shock absorbers.

The list of defects is not exhaustive and is for informational purposes only. In each case there will be new damage.

Interior and electrical

People can and love to tune these elements of a car. Some people change most of the lamps to LED or xenon ones, some cover and make the steering wheel heated. There are cooler music lovers, and some people put eco-leather covers on all their seats.

Here it is necessary to ensure that all this tuning does not hide the car’s defects - the covers do not mask worn out and burnt-out seats, thumping music does not hide alarm signals from the engine and chassis. And it is also important that you do not get into trouble with the traffic police for tinting or, say, xenon on a newly purchased car.

Poor operation of the heating installation is also possible. Check it especially carefully if you buy a car in winter. You may not even be able to get home in an unfamiliar car if the stove does not provide visibility.

Anti-tuning

Not everyone considered the Grant to be a simple workhorse. Some owners tuned the car, and this was encouraged by the relatively low prices for body kit elements. Various braces, subframes, modified supports and shock absorbers are also inexpensive. They did all sorts of tuning exercises with the engines. I can only say one thing. If your aspirations do not correspond to the tastes of the previous owner, then you should not buy a tuning Grant. Troubles are guaranteed when receiving a diagnostic card, or even just complaints from traffic police inspectors on the road. The reliability of the engine and gearbox after tuning will almost certainly be lower. You need a car to drive - don't buy a tuned Granta.

General impressions of the Lada Granta test drive

Every Russian motorist has heard about the Lada Granta. For many, the release of this model caused some skepticism, which is explained by past mistakes of the AvtoVAZ concern. Nevertheless, the overall impression from the Lada Granta test drive is the most favorable . Regarding the model released in 2022, we can say that its creators managed to improve the quality of the main components and eliminate some of the shortcomings that consumers had previously reported. The operation of the gearbox has been improved.

The new Lada Granta features an increased level of sound insulation compared to previous versions. Moreover, this affected the insulation not only on the floor of the cabin, but also in the trunk and on the engine panel. Together all this makes a good impression. And if we add to this the minor changes that affected the interior design and made driving more comfortable, we can say that the new Granta can compete with more expensive car brands. Perhaps, at first glance, these changes are not so noticeable, but once you spend some time behind the wheel, you begin to appreciate them.
