There is not a single vehicle owner on Earth who would not think about protecting their car from theft. This problem has become especially relevant for owners of Lada Granta cars, since it is produced from the factory only with an immobilizer, but without an anti-theft system. But you can install it yourself. After all, installing protection against theft of the Lada Grant has common features, regardless of the types of alarms and their manufacturers.
Installation of secret anti-theft
First, let's look at several methods that will help us protect the car from intruders, but we will not use standard equipment such as alarms and built-in immobilizers.
Installing a secret toggle switch
The simplest, but quite effective, is to install a secret toggle switch.
As a circuit on which to hang this toggle switch, you can use the power supply circuit of the fuel pump, or take one of the wires of the crankshaft sensor, or screw it to one of the wires that goes to the ignition, there are a lot of options. The main thing is to do this unnoticed, and install the toggle switch in a place where no one will find it.
If you don’t understand anything about car wiring, then of course there is no need to do this yourself, you can mess up, in this case ask some electrician, I think he won’t refuse to do such an easy operation for money.
Beacon installation
Another interesting option that can be classified as anti-theft is GPS beacons, which allow you to track the location of the car. Many of them have built-in motion sensors, which in case of unauthorized access to the car will notify you via SMS.
On the Internet, I somehow came across an option with a telephone. Get a second phone and hide it, for example, between the rear seats. Naturally included. If your car is stolen (God forbid, of course), then for the first time it will probably be driven into some kind of septic tank, and if you don’t waste time and contact the relevant authorities, you will be able to track the location of that phone through cellular operators. No one will give you this information themselves, but they will give it to the police, which means it will be possible to determine the physical location of the car. Of course, in this case, you probably need to act very quickly and promptly contact the relevant authorities in case of theft, only then may there be a chance to find the car and detain the thieves. On my own behalf, I’ll say that, to be honest, I don’t really believe in this method, but if you think about it, everything is logical.
Where is it located and how to activate it
Lada Granta cars are delivered to showrooms with the immobilizer function deactivated. Salon specialists perform activation at the time of sale, in the presence of the client. Sometimes salon employees forget to do this, or the buyer himself refuses to connect the protection. The vehicle owner needs to know where the immobilizer is located and how to make it active.
The brain of the anti-theft system is located directly in the ignition unit, which allows you to read the owner’s special code from the key. To activate the immobilizer, you need to perform the following sequence of actions:
- close the hood, trunk and all doors in the car;
- insert the training key (with a red mark) into the ignition and turn it until the ignition is activated;
- wait 6 seconds until the light on the instrument panel starts flashing;
- within 6 seconds, remove the training key and insert the working key, start the engine with it.
If everything is done correctly and on time, then this will be followed by 3 signals, and then 2 more. If there is no sound, the operation should be repeated again.
Mechanical anti-theft options
If you prohibit or limit access to the vehicle's control units, it will be much more difficult to steal it. Mechanical anti-theft protection options include the following methods.
Mechanical protection of a car against theft is based on physical locking of the car's controls, such as the gearbox, clutch or brake pedal, and steering wheel. Another very common method of mechanical protection is to install a hood lock and a special protective case on the engine control unit.
Protective case for the engine control unit
A very common trick of criminals when stealing a car is to replace the original control unit. The thing is that when we insert the key into the ignition switch, the immobilizer polls a special tag that is contained in the key of your car, a special code is written in this tag, if this code matches the code that is written in the ECU of your car, then the car starts successfully , if not, then you can turn the starter as much as you like, but the car will not start.
That is, the attacker has his own ECU and his keys with him. It is not difficult to break the ignition switch itself, and by slipping the tag you brought with you into it, you can easily start the car this way. Of course, super modern cars may not start with the help of such manipulations, but extremely ordinary cars are quite capable of doing this.
Having installed ECU protection, changing the control unit will not be so easy, and this is the main advantage of this method.
Hood lock
Along with ECU protection, hood locks are most often installed. Their operating principle is extremely simple, but at the same time reliable. The bottom line is that an additional pin is installed on the hood which fits into the groove of the hood lock, which in turn, thanks to the electric drive, can be closed and open. The electric drive is most often connected to one of the free alarm outputs, and the alarm must be programmed for this function. All operations must be performed through a relay; how to do this should be described in the instructions.
For the paranoid, you can display the opening of the hood lock on a separate button or toggle switch, only then remember where this button/toggle switch was placed; when trying to do something with your car, the attacker is unlikely to guess about such a life hack.
Transmission lock
This method also works if you are worried about your vehicle. The meaning of this method is that a special device is installed at the gearbox that locks the selector in one position if it is closed. It’s not so easy to break it, even if you drill out the cylinder, you’ll still hardly be able to open it.
Lock on the steering wheel and pedals
These methods are also quite common among the people, but still I would consider them only as in addition to some other method of protection previously listed. The thing is that, according to their structural system, these are still external devices, and external devices are much more likely to break than those devices that are installed in the bowels of the car (hood lock, or gear selector lock)
Step-by-step installation
In addition to the alarm kit, you need to buy new parts for three doors, since the manufacturer only installed a limit switch in the car on the driver's door. You will also need to purchase connection blocks, 10 meters of wire and a siren, or, as it is called
called an alarm bell, since it is not always included.
To begin with, an alarm siren is installed under the hood. It is advisable to attach it in a place where moisture does not fall on it. The limit switch for the hood open indicator is also attached here. If you look closely, you can find this place. But it is intended for European-type parts, and in order to integrate a domestic analog there, you need to make a little effort. A European-type end switch can easily fit into the base position.
The next step is to fix the temperature sensor on the engine. Inspect the left side of the engine - there is a rubber plug through which all the wires from the limit switch, sensor and siren should be pulled. Once they are in the cabin, you need to check them for secure fastening.
We install the main unit of the security system. It is mounted behind the instrument panel and should be securely fastened there. In the fuse block and on the bar located below, we mount the “Valet” button, as well as the shock receiver. Near it, stepping back a few centimeters, we attach the service button.
The transmitter is installed on the driver's side near the rearview mirror. You can attach it using double-sided tape. On the left, a light indicator is cut into the rack body, which is secured with glue.
We attach the cable to the end switch of the open driver's door, and after that the cables from the other three doors are attached to it. “Positive” wires are pulled to them from the door limit switch on the driver’s side. Then the wires are mounted to the limit switch of the open trunk warning lamp.
Now you should connect all the contacts to the main unit and going to the ignition switch. It may be necessary to install an additional electric central locking drive, but this depends on the vehicle’s equipment.
Conclusion
Well, a short conclusion. All these devices are simply wonderful inventions that humanity has come up with. They can really help against car theft. You need to install them on your car, although not all of them in a row, but some are simply a must. Once they tried to steal a car from my friend. But nothing worked out for them, because they installed a gearbox lock and a cunning anti-theft system based on an OBD adapter, which I will talk about in the following articles.
In general, any tricks in terms of car security have long been known to professional car thieves, and if they want to steal your car, they will steal it. Another thing is that if your car is not unique, and not the only one in the city, and when the criminal is stolen, he will be faced with many levels of protection, then he will probably change his mind about stealing it, and will go to steal the same car, which is standing in the neighboring yard and does not have this level of security.
You can make a simple and effective anti-theft device with your own hands even at home, without using complex and expensive parts. Moreover, in a number of cases, homemade protection can help out no worse than a professional one, and individuality and non-standard manufacturing can confuse even an experienced attacker.
Steering shaft locks Garant
Flim LLC has been producing Garant mechanical bollards since 1996. The company owns a full production cycle, starting with a research center and ending with a powerful production complex.
All products manufactured by Flim LLC are unique and have appropriate patents, as well as certificates from a special laboratory of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB. Garant locks use locking mechanisms from the Finnish company Abloy - the number of combinations of the secret mechanism of such a lock reaches 1.97 billion combinations.
The company is certified according to international quality standards ISO 9001-2008.
The steering shaft lock is designed to lock the vehicle's steering system. This device prevents the steering wheel from turning due to the stopper resting on the body elements of the vehicle: as a result, the wheel can be rotated no more than 20 degrees, which significantly limits the maneuverability of the vehicle. If you decide to buy a steering shaft lock, it is better to give preference to trusted manufacturers, since the strength and reliability of the product depends on this.
Blocker advantages
The main advantages characteristic of such devices:
- Burglary resistance. According to auto safety experts, the steering shaft locks available from Pandora Alarm can only be removed using an angle grinder or similar metal cutting tool. But this type of opening is practically not used by car thieves, since it creates a lot of noise and increases the risk of attracting attention to the car.
- Crypto resistance. This type of blockers is almost impossible to open using master keys. The secret part of the steering shaft lock mechanism is characterized by a complex design and a huge number of possible combinations. In some blocker models, their number can reach several million.
- Limited access to the structural elements of the device. The most vulnerable components of the blocker, in particular the clutch fixing bolts, are protected from cutting due to the absence of caps.
- Easy to install. Such a device belongs to the category of mechanical means, and therefore does not require intervention in the electronics. Accordingly, its installation will be more simplified.
In addition, the modern market offers a huge range of products for vehicle protection. Our store offers the most affordable prices for steering shaft locks, which is due to direct cooperation between Pandora Alarm and product manufacturers.
Features of locks
The main feature of the device is the strong fixation of the main element - the coupling - on the steering shaft, which prevents the mechanism from turning and being dismantled. In addition, all metal components of our bollards are made from hardened steel, which prevents possible sawing. We also present the best anti-theft systems at low prices and many accessories for your car
