Classification
You need to approach your choice as responsibly as possible. It is worth deciding which type of spark plug is best suited for the car.
So, these elements have their own classification according to:
- Number of electrodes: two- and multi-electrode. The first type consists of several elements. These are the side and central electrodes. These are installed standard on Priora. As for the second type, they have one central and three side electrodes. As reviews note, these candles have a longer service life and are more reliable.
- Type of material. Often spark plugs are equipped with copper electrodes. What are the best spark plugs for Priora? Judging by the reviews, they have a short resource - up to 30 thousand kilometers. But recently more “tenacious” iridium analogues have appeared on the market. Their resource is about 60 thousand. By the way, such candles have a slightly smaller diameter of the central electrode. If on copper it is 2.5 millimeters, then on iridium it is 0.7 millimeters.
- Thread diameter. When purchasing, check with the seller for which engine you need spark plugs. Thus, 16-valve valves are equipped with elements with a smaller head size and thread diameter. Spark plugs from an 8-valve engine simply won’t work in a 16v Priora.
- Heat number. This parameter means the pressure at which it is easier to heat the candle. There is a cold and a hot type. The glow number of these candles is 20 and higher for the first and 11-14 for the second. Which spark plugs are better for Priora 16 cl.? There is no clear answer to this question. But there are also universal options. In this case, the glow number is from 11 to 20. These are the spark plugs that many motorists use. They behave well both in summer and in cold weather.
What else to look for when buying candles
Perhaps this advice will be unnecessary for many, but there have been cases when motorists got into trouble. So, when purchasing, you need to pay attention to the date of manufacture. According to the manufacturer's claims, it is only three years, even if it did not work. Preserved candles, that is, with a special preservative lubricant applied - 5 years. If you do not pay attention to the date of manufacture, then it is quite possible to purchase a low-quality, stale product. And then you shouldn’t be surprised that the same “same” spark plugs for Priora will last a minimum period.
The first thing to remember is that it is advisable to change the spark plugs as a whole set. But do not throw away the functional ones from the old kit. As a result of several replacements, you can collect a working set of used spark plugs, which you can carry with you in case of sudden failure.
What does the manufacturer recommend?
The Volzhsky Automobile Plant regularly uses spark plugs marked AU17DVRM.
. Judging by the reviews, the service life of these spark plugs is 25 thousand kilometers. This is quite good, considering the low cost - 400 rubles per set. But products with this marking perform poorly in cold weather. What spark plugs should I put on the Priora 16 valves for winter use? Here it is better to use “Priority A 15 DVRM”. These candles have a lower heat rating. They ignite more easily at subzero temperatures.
Analogs
Which spark plugs are better for Priora 16 cl.? For those who do not want to buy factory spark plugs, there is a huge selection of analogues:
- Products from the British. Which spark plugs are better for Priora 16 cl.? For such an engine it is worth purchasing the “Champion” RC9YC.
- Candles from German. They are little popular, but have a high resource. The marking for Priora is 14FR7DU.
- Japanese candles NGK. Perhaps the most popular analogue of factory products. NGK marked BCPR6ES is ideal for the 16-valve Priora.
- "Denso". This is also a Japanese manufacturer. The cost is on par with NGK, and the quality is not inferior either. For Priora you should buy Denso Q20PR-U11.
- "Brisk" (Czech Republic). Another popular spark plug manufacturer. The manufacturer offers products with different heat ratings and number of electrodes. Spark plugs DR15YC-1 are suitable for Priora. The same ones are used on Kalina engines of the first and second generation, with a 16-valve timing mechanism. But judging by the reviews, the products are of low quality - the electrodes are greatly offset from the center, which is unacceptable for such products.
What spark plugs are currently best for VAZ 16 cl.? When choosing, you should give preference to the original - AU17DVRM. By the way, the packaging says “BOSH Group”, but the products were manufactured in Russia. For those who want to use an analogue, NGK candles are suitable. They are distinguished by a good resource and low cost.
SELECTING THE BEST COPY
Let's figure out which spark plugs to put on the Priora 16 valves. Many drivers agree that these ignition elements are consumables, for which there is no point in overpaying, since they will still wear out after 20-30 thousand kilometers. If you have a similar opinion, the domestically produced AU17DVRM is your choice. They are not expensive and work, in principle, quite well.
When choosing among products from foreign manufacturers, we recommend giving preference to the following companies:
- Beru (standard 14FR-7DU);
- NGK (BCPR6ES);
- Denso (Q20PR-U11);
- Bosch (FR7DCU);
- BRISK (DR15YC).
The best spark plugs for a 16 valve engine, according to Prior owners, are made by the Japanese company Denso. Their iridium spark plugs on the Priora - Denso Iridium Power - have proven themselves well, and can travel for about 50-60 thousand km without any problems.
In general, the presence of an iridium electrode significantly increases the durability of the structure; moreover, iridium models retain their original characteristics throughout their entire service life.
For clarity, we present a graph of the increase in fuel consumption as different electrodes wear out.
Graph of increase in fuel consumption as different spark plug electrodes wear (iridium and conventional)
We’ve figured out which spark plugs are best for 16-valve Priora engines – let’s move on to 8-valve engines. The situation is similar for manufacturers: the best budget option is A17DVRM from our ZAZS plant.
Let us draw your attention to the fact that domestic A17DVRMs are an order of magnitude more durable and reliable than nameless Chinese ones at the same cost, so there is no need to be led by beautiful names and bright packaging.
Versions of high-quality foreign models tested by Prior owners - NGK BPR6ES and DENSO W20EPR - they are not cheap, but they are worth their price in full.
The Bosch FR7DPX Platinum also performed well. Reviews from prior drivers indicate that with them the car drives differently - the vibration in the engine disappears and the speed picks up better, and there are no problems with ignition even in severe frost.
Let's get started
So, first, open the hood and remove the decorative engine cover.
It is installed on clips. Next, remove the terminals from the ignition coils. The latter also needs to be removed (using the key at “10”).
Note! When removing the high-voltage cord, do not hold the cord - it may be damaged. You only need to grab the rubber tip. If the element is damaged, misfire may occur. The engine will start to stall, and the car itself will begin to consume a lot of fuel (since it needs more energy to push the idle piston in the cylinder).
Now let's move on to the candles themselves. We lower a specialized key into the shaft and begin to unscrew the spark plug counterclockwise using the handle.
You need to remove it very carefully - you must not allow it to fall into the well. Otherwise, part of the insulator may break off and fragments will fall into the cylinder.
Helpful advice: if you don’t have a key with a magnet, you can use the ignition module itself - install it on the end of the spark plug and pull it back out. This way we can remove the old element carefully and without damage.
How to replace spark plugs
Before installing a new product and removing failed spare parts, you must disconnect the negative pole of the battery, which, unlike the positive one, is black and has a “-” symbol.
The cost of replacing the device is very low, starting from 150 rubles each. The cost will increase or decrease depending on the volume and number of cylinders. On average, gasoline vehicles are serviced every 60,000 km. However, depending on how intensively the car is used, this interval may be shorter and the glow system will fail between 35,000 and 40,000 km.
Remember that if only one spark plug is faulty, it is advisable to replace them all at once. Below we provide step-by-step instructions necessary for installing the equipment:
- a wrench of a certain width so that you can unscrew and secure the new device;
- ratchet or hexagonal head to facilitate removal of the product;
- a compressor with compressed air to thoroughly clean all openings and connections;
- goggles to protect your eyes from debris that may bounce off during blowing;
- You need to put gloves on your hands, they will come in handy when working with cables.
1. First of all, keep in mind that the engine must be cold, you need to start working after 2 hours from the moment of using the equipment. The spark plugs are usually visible or under a plastic protector. They have a characteristic shape that will be very easy to find.
2. Disconnect the high-voltage cable from the required plug, carefully pulling it towards the top so as not to damage it
Do this carefully, remembering the location of all the wires so that you can then secure everything in its place.
3. Remove the fork and spool using a hex wrench, appropriate ratchet, or wrench. To remove the device, you need to turn the tool counterclockwise.
4. Then blow out the mounting hole, completely clearing it of any dirt.
It is important to wear safety glasses when doing this
5. Secure the new product
Lubricate it and start screwing it in carefully by hand, applying a little force, then use a wrench to tighten the device, being careful not to overdo it too much
6. Insert the ignition coil, tightening it with the screws and ratchet you used earlier. Be careful not to apply too much pressure as this may damage the threads and the reel itself.
7. Connect the cable and repeat the same process for each design.
If you did everything correctly, used the appropriate key size, unscrewing the heads, the car will start and work more efficiently.
Installing new ones
How do you then replace the spark plugs? Before installing new ones, you should check the gap between the side and central electrodes. It should be about one millimeter. The parameter is checked using a round probe. It is shown in the photo below:
Please note: over time, the spark plug gap increases. Once every 15 thousand kilometers it is recommended to check this parameter and, if necessary, adjust it.
If the gap is OK, put the spark plug on the tip of the ignition module and lower it into the shaft. Next, use a wrench to tighten it until it stops. There is no need to pull hard. The recommended tightening torque is 25 to 30 Nm. At the next stage, screw the coils and insert the terminals.
Next, we put the decorative plastic cover on the engine and try to start the engine.
How to choose the right spark plug
It is important to purchase high-quality spare parts for a car; in order to buy a good product, you need to pay attention to the following selection criteria:
1. It is necessary to order a product compatible with the machine's engine. Most of the best brands clearly indicate the vehicle models their product will be compatible with. Therefore, you need to carefully review the manufacturer's compliance list.
2. Apart from compatibility, you need to choose the design type as there are various options available. The most common:
- Copper-Nickel: The name may confuse you because these products are primarily made of nickel, with only the inner core being made of copper. It conducts current well, which is why most electrodes are made from it. The product is inexpensive, its disadvantage is that it has a short service life, even if used in a high-energy ignition system without a distributor. Many vehicles will benefit from this option; it is suitable for natural gas engines.
- The next type has a platinum center contact. It is expensive due to the rarity of this element, which is harder than nickel, so you can be sure that the product will not corrode. The platinum will prevent the tip gap from widening and wearing out, which directly affects the efficiency of the engine. There are models with one or more electrodes. This helps generate the spark in the best possible way. In terms of service life, it is twice that of standard nickel/copper construction.
- Iridium Product: If you want flawless, smooth motor performance, there is nothing better than an Iridium product. It has a longer service life than traditional models. The thin wire central contacts are designed to conduct current most efficiently. These are expensive products, but the price is offset by incredible performance.
- Silver candles are an option with the best thermal conductivity. The problem with this product is its durability. The precious metal cannot match the durability of platinum or iridium models.
3
It is important to decide: “What kind of ignition is needed, cold or hot?” To give a very simple but precise definition, we can say that candles that glow during operation are hot
And those that do not reach high temperatures are cold.
The metal shell of the structure operates at the same heat as the head. The elements are screwed to each other, forming a chamber in which heat is distributed evenly. Hot models have a long insulator tip with a large surface area, causing all parts to become hot. At the same time, cold ones have a small cap that helps quickly remove excess degrees from the combustion zone.
Russian-made models usually have a numerical heat rating. Their assessment is not always consistent because some brands give higher values while others underestimate.
It becomes extremely difficult for buyers to choose the right product with so many options. It is best to order the design in accordance with the car's engine and year of manufacture.
4. If you do not want to suffer for a long time during replacement, it is better to choose a design that is easy to install. By applying the above selection criteria, a productive model can be easily determined.
Below is a table of compatibility of spark plugs for a Lada car:
8 valves | 16 valves | |
JSC ZAZS, Russia | A17DVRM | AU17DVRM |
BERU, Germany | 14R-7DU | 14FR-7DU |
CHAMPION, England | RN9YC | RC9YC |
NGK, Japan | BPR6ES | BCPR6ES |
DENSO, Japan | W20EPR | Q20PR-U11 |
BRISK, Czech Republic | LR15YC | DR15YC |
BOSCH, Germany | WR7DC | FR7DCU |
If carbon deposits appear
After 15 thousand kilometers, it is recommended to re-inspect the condition of the spark plugs. Sometimes brownish-yellow carbon deposits can be observed on the surface of the electrodes. This indicates the use of fuel with an octane rating that is not suitable for the vehicle. When the spark plug overheats, the carbon deposits will turn white. Erosion is also possible. The reason may be early ignition timing. Sometimes the candle is simply not screwed on tightly. Also, with early ignition, the electrode itself melts. This spark plug is for replacement only. Which spark plugs are better for Priora 16 cl., see above.
If the car is moving, you should check the part with a tester for functionality. Typically, a gun with a metal tip and cap is used for this. The tip is touched to the thread of the spark plug, and the cap is placed on the terminal for the armor wires. When you pull the trigger, a spark should occur between the electrodes. If it is not there, the element needs to be replaced.
