One of the most sophisticated Russian cars, which is designed for driving on our roads, Kalina Turbo Sport, surprised everyone not only with the presence of an aerodynamic body kit and all-wheel drive transmission, but also with a 1.6 liter turbo engine with 197 horses. Manufacturers are hinting that they can and are ready to release a new modern Lada Kalina “Turbo” model.

Just a disclaimer - the turbocharged Kalina will not be mass produced, this is just a single copy of the Togliatti company workers who experimented on the regular Kalina. But who knows what will happen in a couple of years, everything impossible will someday become possible. And Kalina will come off the assembly line, with a turbine bolted under the hood. The main trump card of the Lada Kalina Sport Turbo is the permanent all-wheel drive system, thanks to which the car uses its full potential.

Technical characteristics of the car

The main mystery of Lada Kalina fans was the origin of the 4x4 formula. After all, initially this classic car is front-wheel drive, and the platform on which it is produced does not allow the production of all-wheel drive cars. Many believe that engineers have created a hybrid of Kalina and the legendary Niva. However, all these are just rumors, and Niva has nothing to do with it. The Lada Kalina TMS Turbo transmission is a new development by AvtoVAZ engineers, close to the Toyota RAV4 transmission. It is designed so that the power unit is located transversely with the center differential. Lada Kalina Turbo is equipped with forced locking of the viscous coupling and an increased friction differential of the rear axle. The rear diagonal independent suspension was designed specifically for Kalina, and it was developed at the Tolyatti plant.

The engine inspires confidence with its significant volumes. The 1.6-liter power unit with a fairly large air filter and the Garett GT25 turbine installed with it make a strong impression even on seasoned car enthusiasts. It has already been said above about the horses under the hood; all that remains is to add that not only the turbine is involved in generating such power. Modifications to the engine add strength to it. For example, different connecting rods and pistons have been installed, the engine cooling system has been equipped with a new system, etc.

197 horses under the hood behave boldly on the road. A quick start, an instant increase in speed, a truly racing growl - this is what the happy owner of a Kalina Turbo can talk about. Even at a speed of 120 km/h, the car holds the road perfectly and behaves confidently on it.

However, there are also minor issues related to the clutch pedal. It remained slightly harsh and insufficiently adjusted.

Instant steering response, excellent start and acceleration with minimal slippage. Newly modified brakes with discs instead of drums improve the braking process and make sporty driving safer.

Turbines based on the TD04 turbo compressor

The Mitsubishi TD04 compressor and its various invariants (TD04H, TD04L, TD04HL and others) are one of the most common Japanese turbo systems in Russia. Installed on Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV-V generations, turbodiesel Mitsubishi Pajero, as well as many Subaru models of the mid-1990s.

The advantage of this compressor is that in the factory version it made it possible to extract a solid 280 - 340 Nm and 280 hp from 1.6 - 2.0 liter engines. In addition, it is compactly placed under the VAZ hood.

High-performance turbos like the Garret GTX30 (installed on the Toyota Chaser or Mark II and German BMW e39 cars) are more difficult to place under the hood. There are precedents, but doing it on your own is not easy.

The build quality of the Japanese turbine is higher than the Chinese Garrett, and the resource reserve allows you to purchase even well-worn equipment. A distinctive feature of the turbine is its flat torque level. Peak performance varies depending on the type of compressor and additional equipment.

For racing where acceleration is of paramount importance, it is better to consider other turbos. On tracks with long straights, where it is possible to fully use the maximum revs of 4 - 4.5 thousand, the TD04 can compete with more productive models.

Interior and exterior features

The appearance of the new Lada Kalina Turbo has also changed, albeit slightly. A chic and fashionable aerodynamic body kit appeared on the body, which gave the car a more modern, powerful and youthful look. We installed plastic front fenders and a powerful air intake on the Lada Kalina. The bumpers (front and rear) were also changed and improved, new sills and a wing were installed.

The restyling of the 17-inch wheels, which are slightly larger than those of the regular Kalina, did not go unnoticed. Now the Lada Kalina Turbo has begun to look aggressive and more stylish; it is noticeably different from the usual Kalinas that come off the assembly line every day.

The interior has also undergone changes. Updated leather seats and a front panel made of the same material, a sports steering wheel and a new instrument panel with a stylish speedometer. The music system is worthy of attention, as is the impressive, massive sound insulation, weighing a total of 35 kg. Due to the huge speedometer, the remaining elements of the dashboard (tachometer, boost pressure scale and temperature scale) had to be moved to the center console.

Of course, the regular Lada Kalina differs in cost from the Kalina, which has a powerful turbine installed under the hood. Just pumping the engine is worth it, and if you add to this the modification of the transmission and external tuning, everything immediately falls into place.

Engine tuning Lada Kalina Turbo

Not every lucky person manages to acquire a factory-made beauty Kalina Turbo, but some car owners can easily turn an ordinary car into a “Sport Turbo” class car without it.

The transformation starts with engine modernization. And if you can get by with regular chip tuning to increase power, then to create a turbocharged car you will have to get under the hood. You can tune both the 8-valve Kalina and the 16-valve one. Moreover, it is possible to achieve an increase in power by almost 100 horses.

The turbine plays a leading role in improving the performance of the Turbo Kalina engine, but do not forget about other elements. Handymen install the intake receiver, modify the throttle pipe and install a high camshaft. A new larger volume receiver will add up to 10% to the power of a conventional engine, and this is due to the fact that the vacuum at high speeds on the intake stroke will decrease.

To install a larger receiver, you will need to change the opening of the throttle pipe by boring the damper or installing a new one. Here you will have to contact a chip tuning specialist and reflash the control program, otherwise the engine will not work at idle speed.

A camshaft with a different cam shape is installed, which will increase the supply of the fuel mixture. This allows the intake valves to be raised higher than before. Moreover, the camshaft can be installed both high and low, both will work well.

An overhead camshaft (otherwise known as a humpback camshaft) works well at high rpm and improves traction. Adds engine up to 20% power. But at medium and low speeds, the camshaft will function differently and the engine will become less stable.

Low-end - works at low and medium speeds, and at high speeds it ceases to cope with its mission. Intervention in the electronic system of the motor is also inevitable here.

Turbine installation: purchasing parts

Assembling a turbo car is a creative process; much (if not all) depends on the construction kit you assemble.

It is impossible to give unambiguous advice here - all answers are only specific.

In the VAZ store you will need to purchase:

  • new pistons (usually Niv ones are used);
  • rings (the higher quality the better);
  • cylinder head gasket (iron, suitable from Kalina for 8 valves);
  • fuel regulator at 2.5-3 bar;
  • throttle;
  • vacuum tubes, tees, bends, etc.

Simple turbo kit for VAZ 2114

If you buy a ready-made turbo kit, everything is simple. We order and receive. If not, online stores, Japanese car dismantling yards and other e-bay are available. You will need:

  • turbocharger (from the above or whichever you like);
  • gaskets (pipe, downpipe, oil drain);
  • inlet receiver;
  • exhaust manifold (there are ready-made solutions for Garrett and TD04; for other turbines you will have to assemble it yourself);
  • a set of pipes, clamps and other small things (ready ones available);
  • intercooler (you can start without it, it gives an additional increase of up to 10 hp);
  • fuel pump (with a capacity of about 250 l/h, the better the quality, the better);
  • injectors (budget option - from Volga, more productive - from Subaru or Mitsu Evo);
  • blow-off (bypass valve for excess air pressure in the turbine, deserves a separate discussion);
  • boost controller (for the VAZ 2114 it is better to use a mechanical one, it is simpler and cheaper, however, you can install an electronic one);
  • absolute pressure sensor (ABP), air temperature sensor (ATS), turbine pressure sensor (TP).

The budget can start from 40-45 thousand rubles and tend to infinity, depending on the cost of components and the amount of work performed in the tuning studio.

Additional modification of the motor

For Kalina 8 valves and Kalina 16 valves, a new engine kit is installed, the injectors are replaced with more efficient ones and the cylinder head is changed. When carrying out the last modification, the flow area is increased and T-shaped valves are installed. Moreover, performing such an operation on Kalina with 8 valves will cost three times less than on a 16-valve one.

The engine block is usually bored to 1.7 liters and a new crankshaft is installed. With such changes, Kalina 8 valves account for up to 135 horses, and Kalina 16 valves account for up to 170.

The trump card of modernization is the turbine attached to the engine. It will increase its power to the limit - from 190 to 250 horsepower. The pleasure, of course, is not cheap, but those who want to make a real “beast” with a turbo engine out of their car will have to fork out the cash.

An additional modification to the engine will be the installation of a zero-resistance filter - this will allow the engine to produce more revolutions. Replacing the conventional exhaust system with a direct-flow exhaust system will also improve the performance, and all this, as always, will have to be secured with competent chip tuning.

Chip tuning plays an important role in restyling a car, and no turbine will make the Lada Kalina sporty if the “brains” are not reflashed. This procedure will improve speed performance and in some cases reduce fuel consumption.

Turbines based on IHI VF10 compressor

Subaru has experimented with turbo engine configurations more than other manufacturers. On the same WRXs you can find Garretts, and the famous Apexi, and Mitsubishi. Not the last place in this series is occupied by the American manufacturer IHI, whose superchargers were installed on legendary cars like the Chevrolet Camaro.

VAZ is equipped with many variants of turbines from IHI, including:

These are classic drag racing turbos that boost extremely quickly, already at 2800-2900 rpm.

The VF10 is less powerful than either of these options. Peak power is about 250 horses (rarely, with very professional tuning and a strong reduction in resource - up to 300). By comparison, the 20th and 30th numbers are capable of developing up to 325 or more horses. But for the VAZ engine, the “ten” (as well as the VF11-20 turbines similar to it), according to many turbo experts, is optimal.

When compared with the TD04 and even the TD05, the VF10 will be faster at the bottom, but the turbo lag will be more noticeable. A VAZ 2114 with such a turbine will feel better on drag or in circuit racing with a minimum of long straights.

Transmission work

The car is very obedient, the transmission does not let you down

The gearbox on the regular Kalina is quite tolerable, and it works quite confidently. However, this is not enough for a turbo car, because there is more horsepower, so the transmission will have to be replaced. But it is not necessary to change the entire box, because the weak point in it is the synchronizers, so you can only replace them.

The old conventional clutch cannot withstand the loads from the reinforced engine. It will also have to be replaced with a new one, capable of withstanding a load exceeding 120 horsepower. It should not stick or require additional effort when pressing the pedal. The choice of craftsmen, as a rule, falls on clutches made of Kevlar, carbon fiber and ceramics - such parts withstand loads well.

Turbines for VAZ cars

There are many options for installing a turbine on the 2114 model. Theoretically, anything can be adapted, but the following models are best suited for an 8-valve engine:

  • Garret 1752;
  • Mitsubishi TD04 (installed on Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, Subaru Impreza WRX, and some other models);
  • IHI VF10 (this model was equipped with the 1st generation Subaru Legacy cars), as a variant of the VF11-20 (stock for the 2nd generation Legacy);

The list can be expanded with dozens of positions, including more powerful turbines TD05, TD06, VF23-30.

For the first boost we recommend Garret, TD04 or IHI VF10-20. They are widespread, inexpensive and repairable.

Moreover, if there is not enough money for new equipment, it is not difficult to find used kits in decent condition due to the transition of their owners to more powerful equipment

Tuning suspension and brakes

If we talk about tuning Kalina Turbo with your own hands, then everything is extremely simple. Already at the factory, the front suspension was significantly improved and modified. The new design allows only minor changes and does not require major tuning. The modification of this car unit consists of installing an additional fastening element for the steering rack. In addition, you will have to install new sports support bearings and more reliable struts.

To improve the braking system, it is enough to replace the standard brake discs with branded brake discs that are larger in diameter. This will ensure safe driving in sport mode.

As follows from all of the above, if you decide to equip the Lada Kalina with 8 valves or 16 valves with a turbine, it will not be possible to limit yourself to installing this unit under the hood. Choosing a turbocharger should be approached by carefully considering what you want from your vehicle.

First of all, the choice will depend on the desired power and financial capabilities. The turbine is available in low, high and medium pressure.

  1. Low pressure turbine. They are quite easy to install and require minimal intervention into the engine structure.
  2. High pressure turbine. A more serious modification of the engine is coming. You cannot do without upgrading the clutch and transmission.
  3. High pressure turbine. These are rarely installed on the classic Lada Kalina, since they are intended for cars that come off the assembly line as sporty. If you install just such a car, you will have to redo everything in the car, from the suspension to the clutch, in order to curb the installed horses and give the car a more or less sporty look.

Installing a turbo on a VAZ 2114: where to start

Installing a turbine on any car begins with a thorough examination of the hardware. You can’t just go to the store and buy a ready-made kit. And even if it is possible, the system will still have to be modified.

If you take on this task, consider the following:

  1. A number of stock units of the VAZ 2114 are unsuitable for a car with a power of over 150 hp. It will not be possible to do without re-equipping the suspension and brakes, installing wider wheels with a turbo engine.
  2. Tuning foreign cars is partly easier if the model being tuned has “bigger” brothers with turbo engines. Tuning usually comes down to searching, purchasing and adjusting ready-made factory units. It’s more difficult with Togliatti-made cars - VAZs don’t install turbines. Fortunately, in large cities there are tuning studios that develop and produce tuning parts. True, their products are mostly unlicensed, so there will be problems with legalizing changes.
  3. The correct choice of turbine is the key to successful turbo tuning. Before realizing your dream, we recommend that you read brief descriptions of the turbines used to modify the VAZ.
