Recommendations from specialists for modifying the thermostat on the Lada Granta

The problem of low engine operating temperature has long been familiar to grant drivers. The problem is in the thermoelement and its design. Inaccurate dimensions and increased gaps contribute to the premature opening of the thermostat valve, as a result of which antifreeze circulates in a large circle.

Spring and thermoelement At first glance, nothing special, but the defect has a side effect - increased fuel consumption. Let's look at how to fix the problem on your own.

How to check the thermostat

The thermostat can be checked in two ways, but one of the checking methods is quite labor-intensive and is most often abandoned.

First way

To check, the thermostat must be removed. It is also necessary to prepare the tools and materials that will be used for the work.

What you need:

  • Kitchen stove or burner;
  • Thermometer;
  • Container with water;

We immerse the dismantled thermostat in a container of water and boil it on the stove to a temperature of 85°C (a thermometer placed in the water will help determine the temperature). When the temperature reaches 85°C, the thermostat should open completely, but if it opens much earlier, it means it is faulty and must be replaced with a new one.

Second way

To check this method, there is no need to dismantle the thermostat, but the check must be carried out on a cooled engine. We start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature. At the moment when the engine has warmed up to 70°C, you need to touch the large circle pipe (this is the lower radiator hose), it should be cold. If the hose already warms up to 70°C, then it is necessary to change the thermostat, as it is faulty.

Way out

Something had to be done with the bent plate, at least temporarily, until two weeks passed and a new thermostat arrived. We offer two options for this situation:

  1. Economical. We straighten the old plate, after heating it thoroughly. But the fact cannot be ruled out that it will soon bend again.
  2. A little expensive. We take thermoelement 21082 and simply insert it in place of the original one.

The thermostat plate on the left is bent

After such small manipulations, the thermostat worked as it should: the fan did not turn on when starting the engine, and the stove heated the interior like in Tashkent. Although this technique corrected the situation, it would be better to replace the entire thermostat with a new one (we hope that AvtoVAZ will notice this problem and put into use corrected, strong thermostats)

Replacing the thermostat from 77C to 92C

Features of replacing the thermostat on the Lada Grant 8-valve
Many Grant owners complain about rather problematic and weak thermostats in their cars. Most of the complaints are related to the fact that the device allows access to antifreeze after the engine has warmed up to 80C. In fact, there is no malfunction in this, it’s just a feature of the operation of specific engines - they are initially configured to operate at this temperature.

Most often, such features are not taken seriously by car owners, and do not interfere with the functioning of the engine. Perhaps the only noticeable difference will be cooler air inside the car at sub-zero temperatures outside. However, converting the car to gas fuel will significantly complicate this situation.

In such circumstances, the element can be modified, although not recommended by the manufacturer, after which it will open at 92C. The modification will require the purchase of a new thermostat, however, replacing the entire part will not be necessary; all you need from the new thermostat is a sensor.

To carry out this work you will need:

  • drive the car onto a ramp or into a pit;
  • drain the antifreeze;
  • remove the air duct (it will interfere with the work process);
  • dismantle the thermostat (or simply remove the cover from the device without losing the seal);
  • install a new thermoelement;
  • press the thermocouple with a spring and a limiter.

As a result of the above manipulation, the response temperature will increase by approximately 15%.

Thermostat structure and operating conditions

Self-replacement of the thermostat on the Lada Kalina

The thermostat contains metals such as copper and brass alloy. The essence of the device's operation lies in a small cylinder turned towards the engine.

In the middle of the cylinder there is a synthetic wax ball, which at a certain temperature (82 degrees Celsius) begins to melt (the wax expands significantly under the influence of heat, changing its solid state to a liquid).

A special pin is pressed into the wax cylinder and is connected to a valve. When the wax melts, as a result of expansion, it begins to squeeze the pin out of the cylinder, while opening the valve through which coolant flows. When the engine stops and cools, the wax in the thermostat hardens and returns to its solid state.

How the heating system works on the Lada Granta. stove heater diagram

You should not buy a thermostat complete with housing if this is not necessary. It is enough just to install a new thermocouple to solve the problem. To do this, the first step is to drain the coolant from the system.

We also disconnect all pipes from the thermostat terminals to get the following result:

Now, using a hexagon, unscrew the three bolts securing the thermostat to its body.

And we take him aside when everything is ready. This is clearly demonstrated in the photograph below.

Now, using a knife blade, remove the old O-ring.

In its place we install a new ring, having first cleaned the groove along it:

We take a new thermostat and replace it. In this case, you should not use any sealants.

We tighten the three bolts securing the Granta thermoelement and you can start connecting the pipes.

After this, you can fill the coolant into the expansion tank. After this, we check the tightness of the cooling system to avoid leakage of antifreeze or antifreeze, and if one is detected, we eliminate it. Before you start using the car, be sure to check how correctly the Grant thermostat valve opens, and only after that can the repair be considered complete.

The price of a new thermostat for Grana is about 500 rubles per factory part. If you take it with the body, then it’s about 500 rubles more on top.

Many cars with a classic internal combustion engine have a cooling system with a very interesting part called a thermostat. The popular Russian model of the budget segment Lada Granta is not included in the number of exceptions. In this car, the thermostat is conveniently located between the engine itself and the radiator assembly. In our material we will try to shed light on the design features of the thermostat and determine the main list of possible malfunctions.

The thermostat is a special temperature regulator for the antifreeze circulating in the cooling system. With the help of this part, the engine warms up quickly, after which it participates in the “group” of system components designed to maintain the temperature factor at a certain level. Sometimes the thermostat needs to be replaced.

The main purpose of the element considered here is to ensure the circulation of refrigerant:

  • in a small circle until the engine reaches operating temperature;
  • after the unit warms up, the liquid begins its circulation in the so-called large circle, when it has to pass through the radiator.

This redirection is ensured by an internal valve present in the thermostat itself, which changes its position depending on the temperature of the refrigerant in the circuit. The valve opening process is observed when the liquid temperature reaches 95 degrees Celsius. As an indirect function of the thermostat, one can consider its contribution to optimizing exhaust and minimizing wear of the LADA Granta engine.

For greater clarity, the functionality of this element can be considered in everyday conditions. To do this, you will need to place our “hero” in a container previously filled with water. Now we heat it on the stove and watch with lust the approaching moment of boiling of the liquid. As it heats up, the thermostat valve will open approximately 20 mm. Such experiments should be carried out with a new product in order to ensure its functionality before installation on the car.

Suitable Models

In the case of domestic cars, including the Lada Granta

, the range of rechargeable batteries is quite impressive.

Among this variety, car owners will have to choose the option that is most suitable for them.

We can highlight a list of batteries that are in consistently high demand and popularity on the Russian market. Some of them are domestically produced, but there are also decent imported analogues for little money.

Suitable batteries include the following:

  • Attack 60L. Modest battery. Has straight polarity, 60 Ah capacity and 500 A starting current;
  • Autofan 60L. The same polarity, but with a capacity of 60 Ah, the starting current is slightly lower than the previous version, 470 A. Costs about 2.7 thousand;
  • Gentry 60L. Here the battery produces 60 Ah and 510 A. Average;
  • Akom 55L. Actually the original battery. Costs about 4000 rubles. With a 55 Ah capacity, it generates 460 A of cold cranking current;
  • Mutlu Mega Calcium. Calcium low-maintenance battery from a well-known manufacturer. Produces 60 Ah and 540 A. Costs a little more than 4 thousand rubles;
  • AkTech Classic 64L. Here the capacity is already 64 Ah, and the starting current is 640 A. A good domestic battery for 4.2 thousand rubles;
  • Beast 60L. Another Russian option. At 60 Ah there is 600 A. Costs up to 4.5 thousand rubles;
  • Bosch S4 006 60L. World famous brand. The manufacturer asks about 4.5 thousand for the battery. In this case, the characteristics are 60 Ah and 540 A;
  • Akom EFB 62L. Improved battery with liquid electrolyte. Generates 62 Ah and 580 A. Costs about 5 thousand rubles;
  • TAB Polar 60L and an excellent battery for less than 6 thousand rubles. In the first case it is 60 Ah and 600 A, and in the second it is 66 Ah and 620 A;
  • AlphaLine Ultra 68L. For about 6 thousand rubles, the buyer will receive 68 Ah and 680 A;
  • Varta Silver D39 63L. If you are ready to shell out the same 6 thousand rubles for 63 Ah and 610 A, be sure to take this battery.

Even batteries from leading brands suitable for the Lada Granta will cost buyers up to 6 thousand rubles. These are excellent offers that are in deserved demand and rightly included in the presented list.

But the final decision is still up to the car owner.

How to tell if the thermostat is working correctly

In order to find out whether the thermostat is working or not, it is necessary to warm up the engine so that the arrow indicating the temperature does not reach the red mark of the indicator quite a bit.

After that, turn off the engine, go to the hood and open it, look for the upper radiator hose. This rubber hose is usually black in color and is approximately 5cm in diameter.

There are metal clamps at its ends. The upper hose is attached to the top of the radiator. Then we look for the lower hose. It looks like the top one, only it is attached to the bottom of the radiator.

Touch the hoses carefully; they may be hot enough to burn you. If the engine temperature indicator shows that the engine is hot, but one of the hoses is cold, then most likely the thermostat valve is closed and is not allowing coolant through the radiator.

In this case, replace the old thermostat with a new one as quickly as possible (after waiting until the engine has cooled down).

There is another “folk” method for checking the functionality of the thermostat and it is as follows. Place the thermostat in a vessel with boiled (temperature should be about 100 degrees) water.

Next, we visually observe whether the thermostat valve opens. If it opens, it means it’s working. If not, we replace the damaged one with a new one. The above method involves removing the thermostat from the car.

If the thermostat malfunctions in a car, overheating or, more often, low engine temperature is observed. Such phenomena are associated with the thermostat jamming in one position; as a result, the coolant moves in one circle (large or small). Lack of adjustment of coolant distribution leads to deviations from the engine temperature regime. Thermostat failure is one of the most common problems in a cooling system. To replace the thermostat on a Lada Granta car, the coolant from the cooling system does not need to be completely drained.

You will need: TORX TZO wrench, 13mm socket, Phillips-blade screwdriver.

Major breakdowns

Although the thermostat is small in size, its importance for the “health” of the Lada Granta engine is enormous. Among the most common reasons leading to the inevitable failure of the thermostat is corrosion.

This circumstance can lead to the movable element getting stuck in a certain position. If this happens when the valve is closed, then there is a likely risk of engine overheating (you need to monitor the temperature indicator on the device). In this case, the thermostat will need to be replaced.

When the moving component of the thermostat deigns to get stuck in the open position, the motor will take a very long time to reach the operating temperature setting or will not warm up at all, which is likely in winter.

If all components of the cooling circuit are in working order, then at zero outside temperature the Lada Granta engine warms up in 10 minutes. If the valve does not “agree” to close, then even in the summer heat the engine will not be able to warm up above the 70-degree limit.

In all of these cases, the thermostat needs to be replaced.

Now let's look at a method for checking the functionality of the thermostat.

Lada 2112 › Logbook › Modification of the grant thermostat

Let me start with the fact that a year ago I installed a thermostat from a grant from BEHR. For a long time I was looking for a thermostat from this particular company in my city and in the end it was found. After installing it, the car began to warm up faster and the heater began to heat a little better, which is exactly what I wanted. After driving with it during the winter, I noticed that with it the car keeps the temperature while driving at 77-79, which is very low for the proper operation of our engine. In the heat of the summer, even in the longest traffic jams, the car was reluctant to warm up, which definitely made me happy, but in the end I decided to replace the thermocouple with a 92-degree thermocouple. The Wahler 3091.92D thermocouple fits into the BEHR housing without modifications. The search for this element in my city was unsuccessful... Either the price was higher than the price of the thermostat assembly, or the waiting period was more than a month. If I'm not mistaken, I was one of the first to install the BUBLS-64 grant thermostat. After recording about the installation, everyone pestered him with questions: what? How? and why?))) It was from him that I came across an idea for improvement for people like me who couldn’t find a thermocouple from Wahler that fits without much modification. This thermoelement was Wahler 3017.92D50. Again, it was not available anywhere and I was offered a Wahler 3017.92D2 instead. They differ only in the presence or absence of a gasket. To implement it, you need to grind a new plate, because... the native one is 1 mm smaller and the consequence does not completely cover the small circle and does not maintain a normal temperature. This element was purchased for 550 rubles and given to my father to make a plate for it. Let me tell you right away that the photos are not mine, because... I did it a month ago and didn’t even think about registering for a drive, so I didn’t take any pictures)) Here is a link to his used one. Modification of the Grant 2190 thermostat or even warmer.

Thermostat assembly from BEHR

Thermoelement and plate for it

After the modification, the stove began to fry and the consumption dropped by about 1.5 liters. With this element, the temperature on the go stays at 88-90 degrees. If anyone is interested in what and how, ask questions)

The thermostat has to be changed in quite rare cases, and Granta is no exception. This usually happens for the following reasons:

  • The thermocouple valve opens too late, which means the engine may overheat
  • Opening the valve too early will result in the engine not warming up to normal operating temperature.

Roughly speaking, if in winter your valve is stuck and antifreeze is constantly circulating in a large circle, then the car will be constantly cold, and therefore the stove will not work properly either. In summer, it is dangerous for the valve to jam in a different position, that is, when the antifreeze circulates only in a small circle. In this case, the car will have to constantly “boil”, which can lead to serious consequences.

In order to replace the thermostat on Grant, you need to have the following tool on hand:

  • 5 mm hexagon
  • 7 and 8 mm head
  • ratchet handle or crank

Service workers promise to get the same thermostat in two weeks

The appeal to the official service workers was not encouraging: they promised to get the same thermostat only in two weeks (the cost of such a factory thermostat is approximately 350 rubles, but not yet in all car shops in the country), and since the car is under warranty, they kindly offered to pick it up on a tow truck for at least a month .

On Grant it is unique, not like on other VAZ models. It is unique in that it was supposedly made in Germany (made in germany inscriptions on small parts), but many on the Internet claim that it doesn’t even smell like German quality, and most likely the Chinese did their best on the thermostat.

How to change the thermostat of LADA “Granta”

The LADA Granta is equipped with power units with 6 and 8 timing valves. The location of the thermostat in these models is different, and accordingly, the replacement procedure is also different.

To replace the thermostat on the eight-valve Granta version you need:

  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • socket wrenches for 10 and 13;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • key T30;
  • container for coolant.

Replacing the LADA Granta thermostat (8 valve) is performed as follows:

  • install the LADA Granta on a site that has a slope so that the front part is higher than the rear;
  • unscrew the bolts securing the engine protection and remove it;
  • place a container for coolant under the radiator;
  • remove the cap covering the expansion tank;
  • Unscrew the drain plug on the radiator;
  • drain the coolant into a container;
  • tighten the drain plug on the radiator;
  • press the latch and disconnect the wiring block from the coolant temperature sensor;
  • loosen the clamp securing the rear hose to the thermostat cover pipe;
  • remove the hose from the pipe;
  • loosen the clamp securing the front hose to the thermostat cover pipe;
  • remove the front hose from the pipe;
  • unscrew the nut holding the ground wire to the thermostat mounting stud;
  • remove the washer and the ground wire tip from the stud;
  • unscrew the two nuts securing the thermostat to the engine, remove and set aside the washers;
  • pull the thermostat housing off the studs;
  • remove the thermostat gasket;

Important: when removing or replacing the thermostat, the sealing gasket must be replaced with a new one!

  • unscrew the three bolts holding the thermostat cover;
  • remove the cover;
  • press out the thermostat fixing plate, overcoming the resistance of the spring;
  • turn the plate, remove it from the grooves and pull it out;
  • remove the spring;
  • pull the thermostat out of the housing.

The new thermostat is installed in the housing in place of the old one; further operations should be performed in the reverse order of removing the part.

Tip: before installing the hoses on the pipes, you should lubricate the latter with a thin layer of sealant, this will prevent possible leakage of coolant.

After installing the thermostat, it is necessary to fill the cooling system with antifreeze (coolant), start and warm up the engine, making sure that air pockets are removed from the cooling circuits.

To replace the thermostat on the sixteen-valve Granta version, you will need:

  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • key to 10;
  • hex key 5;
  • container for coolant.

The car must be placed on a level area, preferably with a slight slope, so that the front part is raised relative to the rear. Before replacing the thermostat, drain the coolant from the system. To do this, you need to remove the engine protection, open the expansion tank cap, place a container for coolant under the radiator and drain the latter by unscrewing the radiator drain plug. After the liquid has been drained, you can tighten the drain plug and begin replacing the thermostat. Removing the LADA “Granta” thermostat (16 valves) is performed as follows:

  • loosen the clamps of the hoses supplying coolant to the thermostat cover;
  • disconnect the hoses from the thermostat cover;
  • Unscrew the bolts securing the thermostat cover;
  • remove the thermostat cover from its seat;
  • remove the sealing ring from the groove in the thermostat cover (it must be replaced with a new one);
  • push down and rotate the plate that secures the thermostat in the lid;
  • remove the plate and thermostat from the cover.

The new thermostat is installed in the reverse order of removal.

After installing the thermostat, it is necessary to fill the system with coolant, start and warm up the engine, and remove air pockets from the system (if any).

Tip: before installing the thermostat on your car, you should check it. To do this, you need to immerse the thermostat in water with a temperature of 85 degrees. If the thermostat rod begins to move, the device is working properly.

Now you know how to change the LADA Granta thermostat and can do the work yourself, without spending additional time and money on a visit to a service station.

Car: Lada Granta. Asks: Shmakov Viktor. The essence of the question: At what temperature does the thermostat open on the Lada Granta?

Please tell me at what temperature the thermostat on the Lada Granta should open, with the settings that were installed on it from the factory?

About structural features and working conditions

The materials from which manufacturers create thermostats include copper and brass alloys. The essence of the action of this product is contained in a small cylinder, which is turned towards the Lada Granta engine block. In the middle of this cylinder there is a wax ball, capable of starting to melt when the temperature in the cooling circuit reaches 82 degrees. The designers also integrated a special pin into the cylinder, which has a direct connection with the valve. As the wax melts, the substance expands, causing the pin to begin to be squeezed out of the cylinder. This action of this pin causes the valve to open, allowing the fluid to reroute. When the motor stops, the wax becomes solid, causing the designated valve to close.

general information

There are single-valve, two-stage and two-valve thermostats, as well as electronically controlled devices. Grants are equipped with thermostats Luzar LT0191 and Luzar LT0190 (costing from 450 rubles for the first, and from 800 rubles for the second), FENOX TS034E7 (costing from 800 rubles), VAZ-2123 (article 2123-1306010, cost from 650 rub.). It is worth mentioning such devices as VAZ-2101 GATES (article TH14580, cost - from 350 rubles), VAZ-2121 GATES (article TH15380, approximate cost - from 500 rubles), VAZ-2110 (article 21082-1306010, cost - from 600 rub.) and other devices. They are located between the engine and the radiator, but it should be noted that there are differences in the location of the thermostats on Grants with eight-valve and sixteen-valve engines.

Their main task is to prevent the movement of antifreeze through the radiator until the car engine warms up to the required temperatures. Accordingly, if the car engine does not warm up, then the coolant does not move in a large circle. Usually thermostat

triggers when the motor reaches a temperature of 80-95C.
Among other things, the thermostat
helps reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere and minimize engine wear.

The thermoelement located inside the device is made of brass, has a cylindrical shape and is filled with artificial wax. When the engine reaches a temperature of approximately 82C, this substance begins to melt, which causes it to expand. This sets the valve in motion, it opens, after which the antifreeze begins to circulate through the car’s radiator. Turning off the motor causes the wax to solidify inside the thermostat and close the damper.

Below we will talk in more detail about possible malfunctions of thermostats, provide instructions for replacing and checking them, and also share a technique for reworking and upgrading this part, allowing you to increase its response threshold to 92C.

Features of the LADA Granta cooling system

As in previous LADA models, upon reaching a certain temperature, the thermostat switches the coolant flow from a small to a large circuit. The small circuit includes:

  • cylinder water jacket;
  • water pump;
  • interior heater.

The difference is that the heater radiator is connected to a small circuit in series and not in parallel. This forces all the coolant to pass through it, improving the heating of the interior. The thermostat opening temperature is 85 degrees. Upon reaching this mark, the valve opens and the liquid begins to circulate through a large circuit into which. in addition to the small circuit elements, a cooling radiator is included. The advantage of the modernized cooling system is that antifreeze from the engine jacket goes directly to the thermostat thermocouple without mixing in its housing. This allows the element to respond to the actual engine temperature, opening on time and eliminating overheating. The manufacturer has set the permissible thermostat opening range to 85–7 degrees. That is, it can open at both 78 and 93 degrees. According to the official letter from the manufacturer, sent to dealers, the operating temperature of the Grant engine may be 10 degrees lower than that of previous VAZ models. This does not mean that the engine is “underheated” and does not lead to an increase in fuel consumption, deterioration of lubrication and a decrease in engine life. However, owners of the LADA Grant often change the thermostat to a new one, with an opening temperature closer to 90 degrees, or modify the standard thermostat by changing the thermal element.

Original battery

To select a battery for a LADA Granta, you should take into account the characteristics of the factory battery. But it is imperative to follow the path of increasing and improving these parameters. This is relevant for those who do not plan to change the power source every 1.5–2 years.

The manufacturer does not hide what kind of battery is on the Lada Granta

originally installed from the factory. These are products of the Akom company.

The use of similar motors, starter and generator made it possible to unify the dimensions of the installation site for the battery. That’s why they are the same on such car models as Granta, Priora and Kalina.

Whether this is good or bad, everyone will decide for themselves.

As for what kind of battery is initially installed on the Grant, the following parameters of the standard battery can be distinguished:

  • Manufacturer. This is the Akom company;
  • Model. Standard Ca 6CT-55 VL;
  • Technology. This is a calcium battery, low maintenance. Half of the lead plates are coated with antimony, and the other with calcium;
  • Battery polarity. For LADA Granta cars, straight polarity is used, as is the case with all domestic cars;
  • Capacity. The basic battery capacity for the LADA Granta model is 55 Ah. This is not so little, but under difficult operating conditions it is better
    to have a small reserve of capacity;
  • Starting current. The factory battery for Lada Granta has a cold cranking current of 425 A. This is frankly not enough if the car is operated in a city with a harsh winter climate;
  • Size. The dimensions of the battery for the Lada Granta are 242x175x190 mm.

Knowing the polarity, capacity, cold cranking current of the battery, as well as its size, choosing a battery for the LADA Granta car will not be difficult.

This is a budget car, and therefore few people decide to purchase a premium battery for it.

The majority of car owners prefer inexpensive but reliable batteries. You won’t have to spend more than 6 thousand rubles on them. But they can last much longer and more efficiently than a factory power supply.

Advantages of LUZAR thermostats

Computer dosage of thermal wax LUZAR thermostats have thermal sensors filled using special equipment, which guarantees high accuracy of operation.

Patented thermal sensor design To eliminate the possibility of a “breakthrough” of thermal wax from the thermal sensor body (which, according to statistics, is the most common cause of thermostat failure), LUZAR changed the configuration of the sealing gasket in the rod-thermal wax-cylinder interface. With increasing pressure, expanding when heated, the thermowax gasket design - thanks to its specific geometry - forms an increased volume of rubber precisely in places where the thermowax “breakthrough” may occur

This also required changing the geometry of the temperature sensor housing (“cylinder”).

Rubberized valves We have eliminated the cause of insufficient tightness of the thermoelement - the metal-to-metal interface between the metal frame of the thermoelement and the metal valve plate - by using a rubber sealing gasket on the valve plate. Thus, LUZAR thermostats provide faster engine warm-up in winter (which is so important in Russian conditions climate).

100% control of thermoelements Each thermoelement is tested for temperature, height and response speed - carried out in special baths with cells.

Warranty 2 years or 125,000 km. Mandatory certification In the event of a breakdown, you can easily replace the purchased thermostat through a retail store - just return it with a warranty card and a description of the defect

All products are certified according to the international quality management system ISO 9001 TUV and have GOST-R certificates of conformity.

Lada Kalina Sedan STOCK › Logbook › Thermostat from Grants to Kalina. Part 2: introduction of a thermostat

I didn’t buy the Grantov lower pipe, because, firstly, they are only sold as a set, and secondly, I would have to buy a collective farm pipe from the expansion tank, or buy a Grantov pump intake pipe, but, again, this pipe will not outlet for return heating of remote control. Therefore, I decided to simply make an additional connection to the radiator return line - the pump intake pipe. I bought a pipe from 2110 in the shape of the letter “Zu”. For the role of a connector, I didn’t look for anything in stores, fortunately my second job has a lathe. Although it is on its last legs, something is rattling in the box, but such small work can be carried out without any problems.

Well, Day X has come. In order not to spill a single gram of precious liquid called antifreeze, we pump out this liquid using a pump through the remote control pipes. I will not describe this scheme in detail, I will only say that I came to this method myself after we drained a friend’s antifreeze in this way on his first focus. As they say, not a drop is missed!

When I saw the color and consistency of my antifreeze, I was a little upset. Besides the brake fluid, this is the only fluid that I haven't changed. Out of anger, I completely leaked everything. So, let's move on. To make it easier to dismantle the thermostat housing, remove the cylinder head.

I would like to note one important point. New studs for the thermostat housing must be taken for the Lada camshaft bed. They are 80 mm long. Don’t believe those who write that you need to take at least 90mm! In this case, you will have to put a bunch of washers. I already put 2 washers under the top pin, because... the end of the thread was visible. And one more nuance. The bottom pin needs to be screwed onto the sealant, because... it is through and goes straight into the water jacket.

Well, then we collect everything. I installed my own thermocouple, although it is slightly different from Grant’s. I did not file/cut the block for the single-terminal sensor, because... everything connects freely. I don’t know, maybe other people have something different, but that’s how it is for me. The upper radiator pipe was cut off by 5 centimeters to avoid bending. There was a small problem with the bottom one. My ten-piece pipe turned out to be longer in the place between the bends, so I took only a section of beech G from it. I cut 6-7 centimeters from the Kalinovsky pipe and, bending it slightly, connected everything. It was already about 10 o’clock, I was doing it at work, so there was no point or opportunity to run for another pipe. With this connection, the tensile pipe broke a little. I got out of this situation by putting a gas reducer diaphragm spring on it, which fit just perfectly.

Hello, is it possible to preheat the throttle and air vent by connecting them with a tee and sending them to the RB? Really looking forward to the answer

Can you make a diagram, can you take a picture on paper and depict how you want to do it?

Thank you! I just bought a thermostat with a factory connection) I was wondering where to connect it))

Great improvement. But I saw in stores now selling such a thermos with a ready-made pipette. Now the question is, according to the factory, where do they connect this pipette? I have a Priora, I will install this thermos, since it is Turbo. There are 2 outlets on my tank, 1 goes to the thermos, the other goes into the radiator, thin just for this pipette. Is it possible for this pipette to cut into the expansion steam hose with a tee?

Tried it, negative effect! The same thermos and the same pipette are embedded in my 21083 carb, mileage 18,000 km, only excellent impressions, I only installed the RB from GAZ 3110 Volga, it already has two outlets - one into the radiator, the second into the thermos! Even on a carb one I fill it with coolant and don’t unscrew a single pipe to get the air out!

Then I’ll buy a RB from Priora without a condenser, it has two pipettes and the second one is used for the hose to the stove, but I only have one in the RB since it has a condenser and there’s a different system there.

Here... your division! The anchor is in my ass! Bro, what's wrong with your expansion barrel?! Why are you doing this to him?! Pressure gauges, Conrads and more than one! Wow, the air really makes you tense. Most likely the cylinder head gasket.

I used to stress it out a lot, I also thought about the symptoms of the cylinder head gasket, but I cured it in a simple way: I calibrated the expansion tank cap to 06 atmospheres for reset and the flight was normal for the third year!

Of course I'm not hinting at anything. But the air is more of a symptom, and you yourself know the cause (gasket). As a temporary solution it is quite viable. May God give it a longer ride without major repairs. Good luck on the roads.

Thank you very much for your participation, I still have the same opinion about the gasket, now the car has been sitting for 2.5 months, I’m driving my second car-eight. We’ll see, in principle I’m not going to stop at Kalina.

Time changes everything! I’m staying on Kalina for a long time! I’ll probably switch to a plugless system, so I’ll replace the gasket!

I rode without deep repairs for almost 6 years, in August 2022, measures were taken to switch the 21126 engine to a plugless engine with the modification of the STK Export pistons, slightly different than the standard STK, and the head and block were sanded, there was a small fistula between the 3rd and 4 cylinders, the verdict was that the cylinder head gasket was aired as they said, but I delayed the repair type much, the work was completed at a mileage of 92,000 km, the condition of the engine is excellent, the output is almost zero! The photo shows the condition when disassembled at 92,000 km!

Resource for replacing the thermostat on Lada Granta 8 valves

There is no clear interval for replacing the regulator; even the manufacturer does not provide such figures. In practice, owners are guided by the principle of reducing the efficiency of the stove heater.

The average service life of the thermostat for the Lada Granta is 65 – 75 thousand km. Subject to the manufacturer's recommendations and careful use of equipment, the interval can be increased by 5 - 7 thousand.

Assembling parts - preparing for installation

Signs that you need to replace the thermostat Lada Granta 8 valves

  • after the engine has warmed up above 85°C, the large circulation pipes are still cold;
  • incomplete opening of the regulator valve, which leads to difficulty in circulating the antifreeze flow;
  • the valve does not close the large circuit line at all, which leads to prolonged warm-up of the car engine and excessive fuel consumption;
  • depressurization of the line, leakage of antifreeze;
  • mechanical damage, deformation of the body;
  • the regulator is unstable, the heater does not fully warm up the car interior, which indicates the formation of fossils and rust layers in the line.

Consequences of prolonged engine overheating

Features of the Lada Granta version with and without air conditioning

There are no design features for the model with or without installed air conditioning. The shape and dimensions of the thermostat are identical. The only differences are in the method of dismantling the stove heater.

Owner reviews

Positive
1.Vladimir: I’ve been actively using the car for two years now, and there are no comments about the heating system. I know about the problem of premature valve opening, but for me it is not significant.
2.Kirill: after 45,000 km I noticed that the regulator opens the valve already at 81°C. I visited a service station, after diagnostics the technician said that the defect was known, but had not yet been corrected by the manufacturer. Comrades recommended shortening the stock rod.
3.Vitaly: after buying the car, I shortened the regulator rod by 2.0 mm, and the valve activation threshold increased to 87°. This is enough for me, I don’t need to increase it any more.
4.Dmitry: I knew about the problem of underheating even before buying the car, I prepared in advance. Instead of the standard core, I installed 3091.92 V at 90° C. Now the system works properly.
5.Gennady: at 80,000 km I replaced the flow regulator for the first time, did not install the original core, bought a Wahler: 3017.87 D. I have been actively using it for two months, no comments.
6.Alexander: a year has passed since the purchase of the car, the valve opens at 80°C. I know that the threshold is low, but it doesn’t matter to me. I did not notice any increased fuel consumption.
7.Vasily: after purchasing the car, I replaced the antifreeze with imported one, installed a core from Wahler: 3017.87 D.
Negative
1.Ivan: The car is a year and a half old, but I can’t fix the problem of early activation of the valve. On the advice of my comrades, I changed the cores, sharpened the stem, nothing helps.
2.Alexey: extremely dissatisfied with the car, the model is crude, there are many flaws and defects. You constantly need to dig around and fix breakdowns.
3.Vasily: the thermostat was replaced after a mileage of 50,000 km, after which faults were discovered in the ignition system and so on.

Conclusion

The problem of early activation of the thermostat valve on the Lada Grant (2190) is known. Engineers are constantly looking for a solution. As alternative, effective methods, use the tips outlined at the beginning of the article.

Do not forget that the operating temperature of the engine also depends on the brand of antifreeze (antifreeze), its properties and characteristics, and the type of engine oil.

Often the cause of poor heating is other failures associated with the functioning of the cooling system of the equipment.
