The gaps between the body panels are wide but even, the fenders do not bulge, the doors do not bulge, but they move a little stiffly. True, our Kalina was assembled at the beginning of the year, and it still has the old opening angle limiters, while the other two Ladas already have new Czech parts - the gates swing wider and move smoother. Only 1500 rubles for a set of limiters! So I recommend it.


With the appearance of information about the coolant temperature in the on-board computer menu, there are no complaints left about Kalina’s devices. The seats with updated filling are denser and more comfortable than before. The pillow supports the hips, the back profile has become better. It’s a pity that there is still no height adjustment for the chair: I would like to lower it lower. The hallmarks of the Luxury version in the cabin are velor seat upholstery and glossy plastic inserts on the high front panel. The chairs themselves are too soft and distribute the load badly. But now Kalinas are equipped with seats with the same cast frame, but with denser padding, so the back doesn’t go numb after half an hour. We tried such chairs, and on the example of six different cars. There is still no lateral support for the back, but the lower back does not collapse, and the pillow holds its shape. The problem is that all six seats differed at least slightly in terms of rigidity. So be sure to sit in your future car: you need to choose a Lada not only with your heart, but also... Yes, yes, the main point of support for the motorist.

And this point also opposes the new seats of the Kalina Cross station wagon. Here they are hard to the point of discomfort, and the side support bolsters are placed on the cushion so narrowly that I am afraid that anyone who wears trousers larger than size 50 will have to disassemble the chair and remove some of the padding.

I squeeze into this “conductor” and ask the question: what else are they asking for an extra 20 thousand rubles compared to the regular Kalina station wagon?

Apart from the seats and cheerful orange inserts, inside it is a Kalina in the Norma configuration. The steering wheel and instruments are the same as in the Lux, but the front panel is, however, “low” - instead of a multimedia system with a seven-inch screen, there is a regular radio. In terms of functionality, the “radio device,” as the factory workers call it, is not inferior to a system with a touchscreen. A USB connector, a slot for a memory card, the ability to connect a phone via Bluetooth - plus convenient control using buttons.

Automatic transmission is the main innovation of the Lada Kalina 2

Both manual transmissions and new automatic transmissions are installed on the car. The automatic transmission, which consumers really wanted to see on Kalina, is a 4-speed unit from the Japanese manufacturer Jatco. This automatic machine, although it was first released more than 20 years ago, has proven itself well on Nissan cars. Together with a 98-horsepower engine, the box provides comfortable driving, quick acceleration from a standstill and excellent dynamics in city traffic.

And finally, let's move on to the main thing - the Lada Kalina engine. The manufacturer offers a car with two types of power units - 8 and 16 valves.

The first engine has a power of 87 horsepower. It is practically no different from the previous version installed on the VAZ 11183, only it has a smaller mass of the connecting rod and piston group due to a special alloy. The developers have reduced it by 39%, while if the timing belt breaks, the valve can still “bend”. Such motors are installed on Kalina in the “standard” and “norm” configurations.

The 16-valve engine has the same volume as the 8-valve engine - 1.6 liters, but more power, which is 98 hp. Only the luxury Kalina 2 is equipped with this engine. The same power unit is also installed on the Granta, so there is no need to talk about choosing between the Kalina Cross or the Granta Liftback in this regard.

Grant without guarantees - when will cars from Tolyatti stop being so different?

Kalina Cross, whom we have known for a long time, has changed her facial expression and name - now she is Granta Cross. And I have two news for you on this matter: good and... However, the second one is not news at all.

Let's start with the good one. Of the entire optimized grant family, I like the ex-Kalinas more than, in fact, the Grants. And Cross's version is probably my favorite. Yes, I still think that the Vesta-style front end looks comical, visually unbalancing the car. Yes, I regret that the plant decided to save money on cool Kalinovsky headlights with separate lamps for high and low beams and install simple optics with a single light source. Last time I indicated that this is an H4 standard lamp - and I was wrong: now it is called H19. Essentially the same H4, but with a 20% increased luminous flux. Subjectively, I didn’t notice this: the lighting became much worse than Kalina’s. But I know for sure that the H19 lamp is not easy to find on the open market, even in Moscow. Not to mention Adygea, where this test took place.

True, the need for invention is tricky: instead of H19, you can adapt an H4 lamp - you just need to bend a couple of antennae on the base. But technically this is an unauthorized modification to the design, so shhh, I didn't tell you about that.

By the way, Adygea has a lot of interesting roads and beautiful views, and the walk along the Guam Gorge really impressed me. But in order to drive on these roads acceptable, you need a cross-suspension: without normal energy consumption, entry into Adygea is prohibited. Behind the bend, a step ten centimeters high or a springboard depression may await you. The heat and timber trucks are to blame: high-quality mountain forests are being rapidly cut down, although locals say that the situation has now become better and the number of illegal plots has decreased.

The cross does not travel on these roads - it flies. Is it really possible that this impending ravine will not cause either a breakdown or an impact? Indeed! And at the same time, the Granta Cross does not have excess rigidity on small sharp bumps, which so tired me while driving a regular sedan and liftback. And again I was pleased with the noise insulation: Granta Cross is quieter than most foreign cars of class B+.

In addition, Kalina is Kalina, even if it is now a Granta: as was the case in all previous years, it is more pleasant for the driver. Less laziness when entering corners, more connection to the steering wheel and the mood to drive. It is clear that the Cross can hardly be called a car for enthusiasts, but the depressing despondency with which the two Grants in the Zhiguli Mountains imbued me is not even close. Or is the whole point that I was unlucky with a copy then, but now I got a lucky one?

Familiar Kalinovsky interior

Alas, friends, the second news is that the four Crosses I tested were significantly different from each other. However, for VAZ vehicles this, unfortunately, is the norm. The seats are all different - somewhere harder, somewhere softer, somewhere the back is concave, somewhere convex. And if you can still check the seat at the stage of buying a car, then what to do with the suspension and electric power steering? Just believe in luck. The Kaluga company Autoelectronics would be better suited to produce encryption equipment - its amplifiers are so good at misrepresenting the reactive action. I came across one cool car - by Tolyatti standards, of course. Equal effort in both directions, no information content, no shocks on the steering wheel. But on the other Grant Cross the steering wheel was spinning viscously to the right (to the left is normal), the third was throwing pokes at it... Somewhere the tight and long-travel brake pedal was upsetting, especially in contrast to the soft and precise one. There is less variation in the suspensions, and in general I rather liked all the Crosses for their smooth ride. However, it’s still a shame to get a more rolly car when another one holds the body in corners and is not at all stiffer. In this case, the numbers on all parts match until the last line of the barcode.

How AvtoVAZ lacks strict selection of components and careful work with suppliers! The VAZ workers themselves counter – they say, this is exactly what they are doing now. They say that the tolerances themselves are small, but when the details of opposite extremes coincide, the results are not very good.

If you are going to buy Grant, try the version with the AMT “robot”: it’s good now. The lever does not have a separate parking position, so you need to either turn off the engine in gear or apply the handbrake in neutral

But they can, as happened with the “robot” AMT. With the firmware updated last summer, it works logically and clearly. A soft start from a standstill immediately after releasing the brake, and unlike Vesta, there are no vibrations. Shifts are fast, and downward also with over-throttle, so you won’t nod your head. And the best part is that even in extreme heat in the thirties and aggressive driving on mountain roads, the gearbox never malfunctioned.

There is an acceptable amount of space in the back for people of average height, while tall people will ask those sitting in front to make room.

For comparison, I drove a Cross with a manual transmission and the same sixteen-valve engine 21129 with a power of 106 hp. And I didn’t understand why I needed to constantly depress the clutch pedal and move the lever. In the mountains the engine is downright sluggish; every now and then you need to turn it down. So let the “robot” do it! The only pity is that, unlike Vesta, there is no Auto Hold function here, when after releasing the brake pedal on a slope, the car continues to stand for a second or two so that you have time to put your foot on the gas. In such cases, it is safer to hold the grant with the handbrake.

According to our measurements, there are only 434 real liters in the trunk of the station wagon versus 533 for the liftback and almost 600 for the sedan. There is a 14-inch rolling wheel under the floor, there is an opening button on the lid

And they don’t yet offer a stabilization system for the Cross - the car itself, of course, is not “arrogant,” but the buyer still needs to be given a choice. Three trim levels are now available: the Classic version with the well-deserved 1.6 eight-valve engine with 87 hp. costs 554,900 rubles, the optimal Comfort with a “robot” and a more powerful engine is 618 thousand, and the most expensive Cross is priced at 644 thousand. Let me remind you that now all VAZ engines have counterbores on the pistons, which save the engine if the timing belt breaks.

Compared to a regular station wagon, you need to pay about thirty thousand rubles for an additional 23 mm of ground clearance, a nice body kit and wheels. Quite a lot - considering that the Granta station wagon without the Cross prefix has quite a respectable 175 mm of ground clearance and a fairly energy-intensive suspension. And if you remember the prices of 2015, when Kalina Cross first appeared, then... It’s better, of course, not to remember: then it could be bought for 409 thousand rubles.

There haven't been prices like this for a long time. But there are no guarantees that for your money you will get a “successful” Granta Cross with a very good level of consumer qualities inherent in it. And by God, it’s time to do something about this.

Maximum speed and ground clearance

171 kilometers per hour is the maximum speed that Kalina 2 is capable of developing. This is subject to a luxury configuration with a 106-horsepower unit. The standard model accelerates to only 168 kilometers per hour, which does not satisfy all drivers. As for ground clearance, both Lada Kalina and Granta Liftback have the same figures - 160 mm.

The exception is Kalina Cross, which is designed for off-road driving and has a ground clearance of 183 mm. For farmers and residents of the outback, where the roads leave much to be desired, the question “Which is better Kalina Cross or Granta Liftback?” is clearly decided in favor of the first.

Who is faster and more economical?

Which is better: Granta or Kalina? In many ways, the dynamics indicators depend on the preset gearbox. The Lada Granta (automatic) with the most “vegetable” engine accelerates to hundreds in 12.4 seconds. The most powerful engine allows you to accelerate the Grant in 10.6 seconds (in manual mode). Maximum speed is from 178 to 192 kilometers per hour. As for fuel consumption, this figure ranges from 5.7 to 9.8 liters depending on the internal combustion engine, transmission and operating mode.

The Lada Kalina turned out to be a little slower. Acceleration to hundreds with a medium engine and automatic transmission takes 14.2 seconds. But on a 16-valve engine with a manual transmission, acceleration is exactly 11 seconds. The maximum speed varies from 161 to 180 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption is higher than that of Granta. But these numbers will not significantly affect your budget. A domestic hatchback consumes an average of 6.7 liters of 95 per hundred.

Kalina cost

The price of a car depends on its configuration. Equipped with a more powerful engine and automatic transmission, as well as “stuffed” with various functional additions, Kalinas are more expensive than the basic, “empty” version. If we compare the cost of Kalina and Granta Liftback, the older model will turn out to be more expensive, which is a bit paradoxical.

The price for a Kalina 2 car in a standard version starts from 331,000 rubles, while a luxury one costs 405 thousand. Obviously, the fact is that the Granta was created as a budget model, and is characterized by the poorer quality of the body and interior materials, as well as the absence of some functions.

Kalina is different: first test drive of Lada Granta Cross

Lada Granta Cross was presented back in August last year along with the new Granta family, under the wing of which not only the previous Grants in sedan and liftback bodies were collected, but also two Kalina bodies - a hatchback and a station wagon. At the same time, the Kalina brand itself was no longer used in September. Meanwhile, the Lada Granta Cross is going on sale only now, essentially remaining a modernized version of the Kalina Cross station wagon. However, there are more changes here than it seems, because otherwise we would not have devoted a separate test drive to the car.

Rarely does an AvtoVAZ press conference these days go by without mentioning the growth of the brand’s market share. They say that after the “hole” of 2014 it is constantly growing. Very often this achievement remains without interpretation, although the most obvious of them is the sharp drop in the purchasing power of our population caused by the collapse of the ruble. And if you keep this passage in mind, it becomes clear why the factory marketers aimed the premiere Lada Granta Cross at middle managers as well. Yes, yes, no less. And before you fall off your chair, look around: the crisis has passed, but the new reality with middle managers who don’t even think about Mercedes, even a C-class, remains.

By the way, this “classroom task” fully explains why for many years AvtoVAZ has been in no hurry to resolve the issue of adapting its basic, entry-level model line to 92 gasoline: even if there is no money for an expensive car, but if you are a real manager, then to 95 There's enough gasoline! Meanwhile, the same Honda in Russia completely allows the use of 92nd gasoline for modifications with direct injection and turbocharging, and the 8-valve VAZ-11186 engine, God knows what year of design, needs 95th. However, finally this pressing – no joke consumer issue will finally gain perspective. Sergei Leonov, deputy chief engineer of the project, claims that in 2022 it will finally be possible to fill Grant tanks (not just Crosses, but all versions) with 92nd.

How it all began

Sergei Leonov answers questions that are not at all pressing, they seem to have already left the agenda - for example, about blocking the cross-axle differential. The fact is that one of the fellow journalists drove the car into the mud so that even the ZIS-131 would not have gotten out, but the engineers of Tolyatti were to blame - they did not equip Granta Cross with this device.

Meanwhile, even during the preparation of Kalina Cross, various options for enhancing cross-country ability were tested, including an interaxle self-locking differential, and when Kalina Cross was already on the market, they even tried a forced differential lock with an electromechanical drive! The introduction of this device, according to Sergei Leonov, turned out to be so expensive that it would not justify itself.

Since we've rolled back five years, let's remember that the story of Kalina Cross almost became a production drama. The then president of Avtovaz, Bo Andersson, called engineers, showed an illustration of the Renault Sandero Stepway and said: we should have such a car in a month. Our interlocutor today, Sergei Leonov, who was then on the team of Oleg Grunenkov, the project director, recalls that the design team did not sleep for almost two months until they rolled out to the retired Swedish major Kalina Cross with increased ground clearance and a molded plastic body kit of terrible quality: made at random the details also required additional processing. This workaround technology was used for several months until the equipment was delivered. As for the current Granta Cross, the successor to that Kalina Cross, everything is in order with the plastic lining on the doors and along the lower perimeter of the body: the quality is excellent.

In general, in terms of equipment, the Granta Cross is more similar to the outgoing Kalina than to the current Grants. This is how it turns out to be exclusive.

Well, the third advantage is quite unexpected against the background of the features of cross-versions of other models of the brand - Vesta, Xray and Largus. They are characterized by a “dense” suspension compared to the “civilian versions”. And the “Granta Cross” surprised me even during the first acquaintance, when it became clear that compared to the usual “Granta” it not only did not become stiffer, but even increased the smoothness of the ride.

Most likely, this is due not only to the characteristics of the suspension, but also to the wheels. If other models, along with a body kit, acquired wheels with an increased rim diameter and a lower tire profile, then the Granta’s rims remained the same 15 inches in diameter, and the tire profile increased.

As a result, it turns out that “Granta Cross” is a rather isolated option in the “Granta” range, just like the “sports” version of Drive Active. But if the latter is a very specific product that not everyone needs, then Cross is quite capable of appealing to a much larger number of people.

On the highway, the gearbox does not stand on ceremony with switching: it easily throws the needle towards the “prohibited” speeds. Closer to 30,000 mileage, an oil smell appeared - the camshaft seal was leaking, they changed it at the service station during maintenance and advised to use semi-synthetics, although previous times they had suggested and poured synthetics. They say that oil fogging is also due to synthetics. I'm a little upset, of course, by the breakdowns that occurred. All these are known problems, but for some reason AvtoVAZ is in no hurry to fix them.

Even though the cars have the same engines, they can show slightly different speed levels. It depends, first of all, on the body type.
