LADA Granta of the first generation: pros and cons, sores and weak points of the car

The first generation of the budget front-wheel drive car LADA Granta appeared in 2011 and was produced until 2022. This model was produced on the basis of the Lada Kalina, which it replaced on the assembly line shortly after its debut. Compared to its predecessors, Granta received an improved modern interior, as well as a new level of safety. Buyers were offered several configuration options, ranging from the simplest basic ones to top-end modifications, which made driving this car somewhat easier. The new model was in excellent demand among buyers, which is explained by its affordable price, as well as good engines and performance characteristics.

Exterior

The new product received a modern design, it stood out from its predecessors, which was appreciated by the buyers of this car. Unlike previous models, the shape of the headlights and front grille was completely changed, so at first glance it was difficult to determine that this was a Lada and not a “Korean” or a “Japanese” one. Improved aerodynamics had a positive effect on both cabin noise levels and fuel consumption was slightly reduced.

Should I take it or not?

Don't ask the seller why he's giving his to Grant, congratulate him on it! LADA Granta is by no means a masterpiece. If you have golden hands from the right place, then repairing Granta can even be a pleasure, because everything in it will break down often. But it's cheap. Granta is the best way to get acquainted with the world of spare parts and problems during operation.

In addition, when buying a used Grant, do not forget that its history may be far from ideal.

For example, this swallow on Avito costs 180 thousand rubles.

Looking through the Autocode report, we see that she has already been in an accident, including a head-on collision. The cost of repair work was estimated at the cost of the car itself. Almost everything has been replaced and, most likely, the geometry of the body has been damaged. This means that the car is unsafe - parts can start to break at any moment. Only a kamikaze could buy such a car.

But even if the car was not involved in accidents and, in principle, is intact, you should not rush to conclusions. It's better to check it more closely. The grant below, for example, looks pretty good. But the report shows a catch. The car is pledged. That is, you are at great risk of buying a car twice if the owner stops paying the debt to the bank. In addition, there are fines that have not been paid.

By the way, out of the five Grants we checked, three turned out to be pledged. Therefore, be vigilant when purchasing and do not neglect checks, both technical and legal.

Interior

The new car used a fundamentally new dashboard, which received a large black and white screen displaying information about the amount of fuel in the tank and a number of other important engine operating parameters. The ergonomics have been significantly improved, including the steering wheel, which fits well in the hands. At the same time, not very high-quality plastic was used in the finishing, which began to creak literally a few months after the car began to be used. The quality of the seat upholstery has improved somewhat; durable, non-staining velor fabric has been used, which has retained its original appearance for many years. In general, the interior combined simplicity and ergonomics, for which car owners valued these cars.

Installed motors

The base for the first generation Lada Granta was a 1.6 liter engine with 8 valves, developing 82 horsepower. Paired with this power unit was a 5-speed manual transmission. For an additional fee, you could get an improved eight-valve engine with a volume of 1.6 liters, which developed 87 horsepower and was equipped with a manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The top versions of the Lada Granta now have a modern sixteen-valve engine, developing 98 and 106 horsepower, depending on its modification. However, this engine was available exclusively with a manual transmission.

Replacing a generator on a car with a 16-valve engine

Dismantling and subsequent installation of the device on Grant modifications with a 16-valve power unit have their own characteristics: there is a belt tensioner. Therefore, the procedure for removal and installation is somewhat more complicated. As in the previous case, you will need a standard set of tools, and before starting work, the negative terminal of the battery is disconnected. It is necessary to remove the engine protection, if any. After this, you can begin to remove the unit by following these steps:

  1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the generator.
  2. Remove the cap covering the power wire.
  3. Using a “10” wrench, unscrew the nut that holds the wire tip.
  4. Use a key set to “13” to loosen the tension bar nut.
  5. Loosen the belt by unscrewing the adjusting bolt to the left.
  6. Move the generator to the right and remove the belt.
  7. Unscrew the adjustment bolt completely and remove it.
  8. Remove the tension bar.
  9. Unscrew the fastening nut from below.
  10. Remove the bushing and remove the bolt holding the lower mount.
  11. Remove the generator.

To install, do all the steps starting from the end, then tighten the belt.

Prices and options

Having just appeared on the market, the Lada Granta in 2011 in its basic modification was offered to buyers at a price of 293,000 rubles. In total, buyers were offered three trim levels: “Standard”, “Norma” and “Lux”, which differed not only in the list of standard and optional equipment, but also in engines and gearboxes. Top modifications were already equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a powerful engine, and for such a car they asked for 450,000 rubles. Subsequently, the cost of the car only grew; AvtoVAZ explained this by rising costs, including the purchase of foreign components, which led to a significant increase in the price of the Lada Granta.

Standard equipment included retractable seat belts, daytime running lights and a driver's airbag. The “Norma” package received rear seat headrests, a second airbag, and for an additional fee they offered to install an anti-lock braking system. The top-end “Lux” configurations already received alloy wheels, air conditioning, an audio system, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, heated front seats, as well as a full package of electric windows. In terms of its level of equipment, such a machine could compete with budget Koreans and Chinese, but at the same time its cost was already approaching half a million rubles.

Devices for diagnostics of electrical equipment

The set of basic diagnostic instruments includes a circuit tester or voltmeter (although it is quite possible to use a banal 12-volt test lamp equipped with a set of connecting wires). If available, you can use an open circuit indicator, which includes a lamp, an independent power source and connecting wires.

In addition, you should always carry a set of cables in your car to start the engine from an alternative source (usually the battery of another car). These wires are equipped with alligator clips.

It would be a good idea to have an electrical circuit breaker, since this equipment can be used to connect circuit elements and bypass electrical equipment during diagnostics.

Advantages of the LADA Granta car

The advantages of the first generation Lada Granta include its affordable price and high ground clearance, which is important when operating the car on broken Russian roads. The cost of spare parts for the Grant is not too high, and its repair and maintenance is not particularly difficult. With powerful 16-valve engines, this car showed good dynamics, which significantly simplified its control in city conditions.

The car turned out to be quite economical, both in terms of fuel consumption and the car owner’s costs for servicing the car. This is an inexpensive, roomy and versatile sedan that was often used as a car for the whole family. This model was perfect for use in the Russian climate; it had a powerful stove that quickly heated the interior.

Fuel equipment

The fuel circuit consists of a pump, fuel supply lines, a fine filter, and nozzles - sprayers.

Most often, the fuel pump fails for the following reasons:

  • Natural wear of the part,
  • Systematic refueling with low quality fuel, high in chemical impurities,
  • Third-party mechanical damage to the pump housing, filter,
  • Short circuit in the circuit,
  • Manufacturing defect.

Do not rush to replace the pump with a new one; it is enough to carry out preventive maintenance on the existing one. This will save a lot of money on repairs.

The gas distribution mechanism (GRM), its basis is a belt that connects the generator, crankshaft pulleys, and camshaft.

Due to weakening of tension, a break, it is impossible to start the Lada Granta engine. Replacing the drive belt is not at all difficult; the task can be done by a car enthusiast without any skills.

It is enough to loosen the generator mounts, move the housing as far as it will go, and remove the belt. Reassemble the structure in reverse order.

Disadvantages of Lada Granta

The disadvantages of the 1st generation Lada Grant include the build quality and the cheapness of the plastic used, which led to the rapid appearance of “crickets” in the cabin, which were extremely difficult to deal with. One could not expect comfort and good handling from this car; the car was clearly not intended for high-speed driving on country highways.

Also, the disadvantages include the mediocre corrosion resistance of the body. After several years of using the car, the first traces of rust appeared on Russian roads, which forced expensive repairs. The same applied even to minor damage to the body; if the car owner did not repair such scratches and chips in a timely manner, then soon the rusted body panels would have to be replaced.

Car owners note that under significant loads on the engine, the timing belt broke, after which the valves bent, and the engine required major repairs. It was necessary to constantly monitor the level of engine oil, which often leaked through leaky gaskets and seals. Another weak point in this car is the cooling system pump, which quickly wore out, requiring timely replacement.

Problems with the immobilizer (APS)

Often the Lada Granta does not start due to improper operation of the APS. If it is activated, the key is read and the engine starts. The immobilizer (APS) identifies the “native” key by reading the code from it.

If it is incorrect, then the APS blocks the operation of all vehicle systems. Here it is necessary to immediately clarify that APS is not activated upon sale in all trim levels. Lada Granta sedan is equipped with an anti-theft alarm in models 023, 024 and 050.

Lada Granta liftback in the 711, 713, 750 and 751 configurations. Many car dealers cheat when selling and say that the immobilizer cannot be activated. But by law they must do this at the request of the car owner.

If the key is not registered, the indicator lights up continuously for about 20 seconds. without blinking, and then goes out. During training, blinking occurs at a frequency of 5 Hz, at the end of training at a frequency of 10 Hz. When problems arise in the system, a sound alert is added to the light indication; it appears at the 10th and 20th second.

Decoding signals:

1 signal + flashing indicator – the code from the key cannot be read, possible reasons:

  • problems in the communication coil circuit. In this case, you need to check the resistance and inspect the circuit;
  • There is no transponder in the key. To eliminate the problem in the training key, you should check the presence of the transponder and its markings; if it is missing, then use a “clean” key and the CSUD to retrain the entire system;
  • The transponder (located in the red key, you need to remove the red head) may be broken. In this case, for a training key, you need to retrain the system with a clean key, and for a working key with a remote control, you need to replace the remote control with a new one and train the system again;
  • Remote control "alien". In this case, you need to replace it with a clean one and retrain.

2 beeps + flashing indicator – the relationship between the APS and the ICS is broken, possible malfunctions:

  • There was a communication failure on the w line. In this case, it is necessary to eliminate violations in the chain between the APS and the ICS;
  • violation in the APS and KSUD chain. It is necessary to replace them one by one to identify where the malfunction occurred;
  • there is no voltage on the APS and KSUD power supply. In this case, you need to check and restore the voltage.

3 beeps + intermittent indication - “foreign” key or APS. In this case, it is necessary to carry out training using a “clean” key and a “clean” KSUD. For APS, you need to configure the system using a training key native to the ICS.

4 signals + flashing indicator – the controller does not provide confirmation to start the engine. This suggests that the KSUD has already been trained with another system; it needs to be changed to a clean one and retrained.

To find out exactly the cause, it is necessary to make a diagnosis. If the controller is broken, it must be replaced and re-learned.

If there is an APS, then you need to replace it and train it along with all the working keys, since structurally in the Lada Granta the APS is located in the instrument cluster.

If there is a suspicion that the keys have been read, then retraining should also be done.

Step-by-step instructions for training the immobilizer and working keys:

  • close the driver's door tightly;
  • turn on the ignition using the red key;
  • turn off the ignition and remove the key, the indicator flashes at a frequency of 5 Hz;
  • quickly (within the next 6 seconds) turn on the ignition using the black key;
  • further: we hear 3 beeps and after 6 seconds - 2 beeps;
  • turn off the ignition and remove the key;
  • if you need to train several more working keys, then you need to repeat steps 4 to 6 (the maximum number for training is 4 keys);
  • over the next 6 seconds, turn on using the red training key;
  • then: 3 beeps, after 6 seconds - 2 beeps;
  • turn off the ignition, after 6 seconds we hear 1 signal;
  • the indicator starts blinking very quickly (with a frequency of 10 Hz);
  • turn on the ignition - we hear 3 beeps, the indicator goes out, the learning process is completed;
  • turn off the ignition;
  • Now you need to check the immobilizer: to do this, you need to turn on the ignition with a working or training key, if the indication does not light up, then everything went well, we try to start the engine.
