The “Priors” family now has a complete set - a station wagon has been added to the produced versions of the model with sedan and hatchback bodies. Moreover, changes occurred not only with the car body.

COMPETITION in market conditions is a great thing! It seems that Russian automakers have finally begun to understand this. At least the “Lada Priora” station wagon, even with a purely “theoretical” acquaintance, clearly differs in a positive direction from similar models in a similar price segment. In the “Lux” package, for example, rain and light sensors are installed here. In cars of similar cost, you won’t even get such equipment as an option. Well, the VAZ station wagon is already equipped with climate control, ABS, electric windows and alloy wheels in the basic version.

Once inside the cabin, I almost reflexively noticed the quality of its build. After all, on the Priora sedan, which I had the opportunity to test two years ago, the glove box was difficult to close, the exterior mirrors vibrated, and the hatch for transporting long objects located in the back of the rear seat jammed..

And in general, everything there somehow creaked suspiciously and did not inspire any confidence. Therefore, with particular passion, I walked my hand over the dashboard and interior trim. But this time I didn’t find any outright hackwork: the gaps between the panels and interior parts became smoother and smaller, nothing in the cabin seemed to creak.. Well, you can get under way.

I have a presentiment of how knowledgeable people are trying to pull me back, to stop me: they say, tell me about the main thing - about practicality, the volume of the luggage compartment! After all, this is a station wagon! And you’re on your way right away...

We must, of course, pay attention to this. Although, unfortunately, there is nothing special to talk about practicality. The trunk volume of the station wagon is exactly the same as that of the predecessor “Lada-111” - 450 liters (if you load luggage up to the window line) and 777 liters (with the rear seats folded). The indicators are mediocre - in other compact class station wagons the cargo compartment capacity is close to, and in some cases exceeds, a thousand liters.

And what’s interesting is that the station wagon is 5.5 cm longer than the “eleventh”, why didn’t the trunk become larger? The fact is that the external dimensions have increased mainly due to the “plumper” bumpers - this has no effect on the internal space.

To be fair, it must be said that the luggage compartment here is well designed. To make loading easier, the edge of the fifth door was placed quite low, for which purpose a recess was specially made in the rear bumper. They provided a net in the trunk and several small metal loops for attaching things. Here the VAZ team also distinguished itself from its competitors.

THERE IS a fairly common misconception that a station wagon can carry heavy loads that a sedan or hatchback cannot. In fact, the gain is only in the volume of cargo, and the difference in carrying capacity, if we talk about the compact class, as a rule, does not exceed a couple of tens of kilograms. The Priora station wagon has a carrying capacity at the level of its Western counterparts - 505 kg. But compared to its brothers - the sedan and hatchback - it increased by only 15 kg.

However, even because of this small difference, the designers had to slightly change the suspension settings. And as a result... the car's driving performance has become worse.

. Roads in the Kaliningrad region, as in any other part of Russia, are far from ideal. However, the station wagon's suspension copes with potholes more or less tolerably. But a series of gentle “waves” on the asphalt made our car sway so much that it was time to stock up on seasickness pills. Actually, this is a long-standing disease of models of the “tenth” family, but the “Priora” sedans and hatchbacks have already recovered from it. And here’s a surprise – on the station wagon, the chronic illness made itself known again. The reason is the unsuccessfully selected characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers. Therefore, in more or less serious turns, the Priora does not perform well and reluctantly reacts to the rotation of the steering wheel - first it almost completely selects the suspension travel, and only then with a strong trim on board it goes into a turn.

Model background

The roots of the VAZ-2170 project go back to the distant 80s, when production of the first front-wheel drive domestic car, the VAZ-2108, began. This was the first successful attempt by AvtoVAZ designers to create a front-wheel drive car, so on its basis they continued to create new cars - the second generation Samara and the VAZ-2110. Production of the VAZ-2110 could have started back in the late 80s, but the launch occurred only in 1995. The “Ten” sedan was produced until 2007.

During all this time the car has never had a restyling. At first it was carburetor, then injection. At first, an eight-valve engine was installed under the hood, and then (for the first time in 1999) sixteen-valve engines were also installed. In 2007, when serial production of the Prior began, a series of sales of the remaining VAZ-2110 from the warehouse began.

The Priora sedan marked a new mark in the AvtoVAZ model range. Its serial production and sales began in 2007. Body elements have become smoother, and the interior has become more modern. Gradually, the Priora of various modifications replaced the “tenth” family and became one of the most popular passenger cars on Russian roads.

2012-'13 Lada Priora station wagon

Lada Priora station wagon (in-plant index VAZ-2171) has been produced in Tolyatti since May 2009. The car is built on the platform of the Lada Priora sedan and differs from its co-platform, of course, by a different rear part and the presence of a large and voluminous luggage compartment.

As part of the review, we will try to find the advantages, as well as disadvantages, of the Russian station wagon model Lada Priora.

The appearance of the VAZ 2171 station wagon copies the exterior design of the Priora sedan and hatchback entirely, but only up to the doors of the second row, then differences are observed that have a positive effect on the seating position of the rear row passengers and the cargo capacity of the trunk. The straight roof line and almost even glass frames made it possible to significantly increase the doorway in the upper part, making it definitely more convenient to sit in the station wagon in the rear seats than in a sedan or hatchback. The van-shaped stern, of course, does not look like a masterpiece of design art, but in fact it is thought out and competent from a practical point of view. The car does not look like a “barn” in profile; from the rear, the vertically positioned lighting equipment allowed us to fit the correct rectangular tailgate door, which is important given the low loading height.

Overall dimensions of the Priora station wagon: 4340 mm long, 1680 mm wide, 1508 mm high, with a 2492 mm wheelbase and 165 mm ground clearance. Tires with rims 175/65 R14 – 185/65 R14 are installed at the factory. In general, the car body makes a pleasant impression, and during production, more than half of the body parts are made of galvanized and low-alloy steel (they will not allow rust to develop for at least six years).

Inside, we are first interested in the rear seats (after all, we are talking about a universal car for the whole family), their transformation and, most importantly, the cargo capacity of the trunk. It is more convenient to get into the Lada Priora station wagon, and sit more comfortably than in the Priora sedan and hatchback. Legroom is in short supply, but headroom and overall space are noticeably free and comfortable. The trunk in traveling condition with five passengers can accommodate 444 liters (loading along the lower edge of the glass), folding the second row seats (you will have to remove the headrests and put in a lot of effort and skill) we get 777 liters (on the glass). It has been experimentally verified that loading “under the ceiling” will provide a volume of about 1200 useful liters. The luggage compartment is really impressive in its size, the refrigerator will fit in without any problems, but how many bags of potatoes can be loaded... it all depends on the owner. Do not forget that the carrying capacity of the “universal Priora” is 505 kilograms. The trunk can easily be considered one of the advantages of the car, but the disadvantages of the interior, like the entire Priora family, are uncomfortable front seats, poor build quality of the interior and the materials used, and inconvenient transformation of the seats.

Specifications . For the Lada Priora station wagon, only one petrol engine is offered: a 1.6-liter 16 cl. (98 hp) with 5 manual gearboxes. The engine power is enough for confident movement with a full passenger compartment and a loaded trunk, but with the air conditioning on, the engine thrust is not enough, and fuel consumption in mixed mode with a full load rarely drops below 9 liters. The suspension with reinforced rear springs is stiff, especially when operating with an empty trunk. The gearbox is an unsuccessful design, inconvenient control and switching algorithm; over the years of production, its criticism has already set everyone’s teeth on edge, but it continues to be installed on cars.

Price . You can become the owner of a Lada Priora station wagon in the “norm” configuration (hydraulic booster, audio preparation, front windows, ABS with BAS, driver’s airbag) by paying 361.9 thousand rubles. The most advanced version of the Lada Priora “luxury” station wagon (two airbags, electric power steering, heated front seats and windshield, electric heated mirrors, climate system, advanced music, light and rain sensors, artificial leather seat upholstery, parking sensors and other options) “ will pull” by 441.2 thousand rubles.

Suspension characteristics

The Priora's chassis was designed for smooth driving over bumps and obstacles, as well as driving along a country road. Of course, the VAZ-2170 is not an SUV, but it can easily go through many places. The front part of the suspension is independent, and the rear part is semi-independent, which makes the car softer.

Many owners almost immediately replace the anti-roll bar arms along with the struts with a sports kit - so that the car does not wobble when making a sharp turn. Telescopic shock absorbers consistently dampen vibrations when driving over obstacles, so there will be no problems with it. The VAZ-2170 is a front-wheel drive car.

• Front suspension is MacPherson type with longitudinal braces.
• The rear suspension is also with trailing arms. It has a U-shaped transverse beam, to which a torsion-type anti-roll bar is attached.

As for the ground clearance, for the pre-restyling version it was 165 mm, and for the restyled version it was 170 mm. The wheelbase is 249.2 cm, the front track width is 141 cm, the rear track is 138 cm. The suspension can be lowered or raised if desired - ready-made kits for modernization are available for open sale.

The voluminous and rather heavy luggage moves into the bowels of the Kalina, and the movers are already grumbling: everything seems to be fine - the trunk capacity is enough for most items, the opening is wide enough, there is no risk of crashing your head into the open door, but transferring heavy items over the high side is not very convenient . Have you downloaded everything? No, no matter how much we turned the folded stepladder, we couldn’t fit it in; there was no room left for a portable generator either. But it is possible to increase the cargo compartment by folding the rear sofa.

Features of the modification

The Lada Priora sedan has two brothers - “Premier” and “Sport”. Premier is a version of Priora with a wheelbase extended by 175 mm. The “tradition” of making an extended version of the production model came from the VAZ-2110 - this version was also called “Premier”. The extended Priora began production in 2007. Its basic equipment contains much of what is found only in the luxury version of the VAZ-2170, and the center console, dashboard and door panels are complemented with wooden inserts that add style to this car.

All 175 mm “went” to the passengers on the rear sofa - it became much more spacious. However, they did not enlarge the glass - they simply installed another section, separating it from the main glass with a black plastic stand. The car's engine was revved up a bit - the Premier accelerates to 195 km/h, despite the fact that the car weighs 100 kg more than a regular Priora. This model was preferred by AvtoVAZ managers as a company car.

“Premier” and “Sport” cars were produced to order by Super-Avto CJSC from spare parts supplied by AvtoVAZ. The first copy of the Lada Priora Sport coupe was sold in 2010 - a year after the redesigned Priora participated in the WTCC races. In the sports version, they made minor modifications to the engine, but put more effort into the design - sports upholstery and “factory” tuning.

Among domestic car enthusiasts you can often meet gardeners, summer residents, fishermen, tourists, builders, installers and other lovers of large trunks in cars. It’s not for nothing that the well-known “four” held a high rating among VAZ cars for so long - low cost and excellent capabilities for transporting various cargoes. It is equally important to take into account a number of other points:

• dimension of the opening for loading with the trunk lid open

It is better for tall “high-altitude climbers” to bend down - here the door hangs a little closer to the head. But it is much more important that it is easier to lift the boxes: the loading height is less, and the side is half as low as in Kalina. Are you packed? Why did one of the boxes seem to have fallen through somewhere? It turns out that the side elements of the raised floor hang over the niches in the wings without any support. This means that a heavy load should be placed only in the middle of the floor, above the spare wheel. And so they did. And we realized: there is more free space here. True, the ill-fated generator with a ladder was left behind. Let’s resort to transforming the salon “furniture” again.

The amount of ground clearance of a car directly depends on the installed spring. The body rests on it, and not only how much the car will rise above the road, but also the operation of the entire suspension depends on its rigidity and length. There are several options for springs on the Lada Priora. These are classes “A” and “B”, the first one is considered the more severe. In addition, there are several types of springs that were installed directly at the factory at different times.

When choosing springs, you should always look for a reasonable compromise, since installing an overly stiff part and using it on an unloaded car will not allow the suspension to work smoothly, and the car will bounce on every bump.

One of the options for increasing ground clearance is to install intercoil spacers on the spring. These elements do not allow the spring to compress completely, and the stiffness of the suspension increases. However, at the same time, the compression of the shock absorber is limited, which reduces the smoothness and comfort of the vehicle's suspension. This method is justified when using the car on bad roads, since it additionally helps prevent breakdown of the suspension and protect the shock absorber and spring from destruction.

Another simple way to increase ground clearance is to install a spacer under the spring between the body and the spring. This part, made of high-strength rubber, easily copes with the pressure of the vehicle's weight on it, while the suspension settings practically do not change. You need to understand that if the spring sag, installing such a spacer will not be able to increase the rigidity of the part. Therefore, the spring must be changed.

The length of the station wagon is 1 centimeter shorter, but the Priora hatchback is even smaller, the length of this version of the body is 4210 mm. The width of the entire family is 1,680 mm and the wheelbase is the same for all 2,492 mm. But everyone’s height is different, the Lada Priora sedan is 1,420 mm, the hatchback is 1,435 mm, but the station wagon is generally 1,508 mm in height. The high height of the Priora station wagon is explained by the presence of roof rails. In a hatchback, the design of the rear part of the body is such that the car turns out to be taller than a sedan.

Regarding the ground clearance or ground clearance of the Lada Priora

In the new version of Lada Priora, little has changed in all three bodies. The sedan's trunk volume is 430 liters. The luggage compartment volume of the Priora hatchback is smaller, only 306 liters, but if you fold the rear seats (which cannot be done in a sedan), the volume increases to 705 liters. In the Priora station wagon, the luggage compartment volume is 444 liters, and with the seats folded down it reaches 777 liters. Unfortunately, the rear seats do not fold flat with the floor, and the large wheel arches eat up quite a lot of luggage space.

Regarding the tire size of Lada Priora

, then the manufacturer recommends installing 14-inch wheels. The tire size can be 175/65 R14 or 185/60 R14 or 185/65 R14. The most interesting thing is that today, even on Lada Granta or Kalina in well-packaged trim levels, AvtoVAZ offers 15-inch wheels as standard. Why this is not the case on Priora is not clear, although this does not stop the owners of these cars, who put much larger wheels on their Lada Priora.

Well, what is it like for our installers behind the wheel? There are no revelations here - both cars are already familiar. High seating position, good visibility, decent cabin width - the layout of the Kalina's interior space deserves high praise. In addition, one cannot help but notice how much the build quality has increased compared to copies from earlier batches. What will the passengers say? After you unload some of the equipment to seat your household, they will rejoice at the unexpected space. But here’s what’s not good: even in the event of a minor accident, it is the occupants of the rear sofa that will be at risk - there are seat belts, but not a single headrest!

What does a driver need to understand? A sedan is a configuration in which the trunk in the cabin is linearly separated by a partition. The most popular body type among cars. It differs in its dimensions (in millimeters):

• it is longer - 4350;
• height – 1420;
• width – 1680.

It is worth paying attention to the ground clearance (clearance) - 165 mm and the track width of the front and rear wheels - 1410 and 1380 mm, respectively. The trunk can fit about 430 liters of cargo.

In terms of the amount of fuel consumed, both the sedan and the hatchback are almost the same.

However, our installer friends do not live by their luggage alone - we still need to get to construction! On the move, Kalina evokes conflicting feelings. It seems that the 1.4-liter engine (this is the version tested) can be confidently called modern (and economical), but its power is not enough even for an empty car. How will it accelerate when fully loaded? The station wagon loses all semblance of dynamics and, like a KamAZ with a full tank, becomes an obstacle to the flow. What a flow there is - even at the start the engine choke, you have to add gas, fire the clutch.

Lada Priora is available in several body styles - sedan, station wagon and hatchback. The car is characterized by a simple and laconic exterior design, as well as a conservative interior design style. The Lada Priora, which comes in a wide range of body colors, has a five-seater interior.

Engine and transmission

The car is equipped with a 1.6-liter 106-horsepower gasoline engine. The power plant has an in-line layout and is equipped with four cylinders. The maximum torque is 148 Nm. Additionally, the power unit is equipped with the option of electronically controlled fuel injection distribution. The 106-horsepower engine is controlled by a five-speed automatic or manual transmission with an identical number of steps. The large trunk volume of the Priora hatchback and a fairly powerful engine allow the car to be used for family trips.

Lada Priora accelerates to hundreds in 12.6 seconds and can reach speeds of up to 183 km/h. Taking into account the relatively small mass, the level of fuel consumption of the vehicle varies between 5.5-8.8 liters for every 100 km of travel.

The comfortable suspension design and sufficient trunk volume of the Priora sedan allows the car to be used as a suitable model for regular business trips. In the front there are McPherson struts. The rear suspension has a dependent design.

The Lada Priora, whose ground clearance is 165 mm, has ventilated disc brakes at the front. At the rear, the brake system is drum-type. In general, this has a positive effect on the level of safety during operation. The steering system in entry-level vehicles is equipped with a hydraulic booster. More expensive versions of the Priora are distinguished by the presence of an electromechanical power steering. The front part of the car is identical for all modifications of the model, and accordingly, the hood on the Lada Priora is the same on both the sedan and the station wagon.

Differences in configurations

Regardless of the body style, the car is equipped with a front-wheel drive system. The trunk volume of the Priora (station wagon) is 444 liters. If the rear row of seats is removed, this figure can increase to 777 liters.

The basic version of the car (standard equipment) includes an immobilizer, an airbag for the driver and audio preparation. The comfortable interior is lined with fabric materials that are easy to clean. The standard modification of the car is also distinguished by the presence of athermal glazing, which is characterized by an increased heat absorption coefficient.

There is a modification of the car that is most attractive to owners of the Priora model - the “Norma” package. We will consider further what is included in the equipment of such a vehicle. The developers equipped this version of the car with an airbag, full power accessories and central locking. A special feature of this modification is a small hatch provided in the rear seat to simplify the transportation of long cargo. This design solution is relevant for the sedan version of the Lada Priora.

The top version of the car (Lux) has the most expensive equipment. Potential buyers can look forward to a model with improved upholstery and a cruise control system. All information about the operation of the system is displayed on the touch display. In the Luxury configuration, the car is equipped with the option of heated front seats, alloy wheels and rear headrests. This level of equipment makes it easy to cover long distances.

“Priora” is somewhat similar to its rival. The same “empty” steering wheel (its rotation is accompanied by a quiet but annoying buzzing of the electric booster), quite decent smoothness. But the dynamics are much better, even with the air conditioning on. It is clear that with it the car accelerates not as quickly as with it not working, but there is no need to be ashamed. And if you remember that, according to the passport data, the fuel consumption of both station wagons is almost the same, then the conclusion which one wins suggests itself. However…

Priora is equipped with two gearboxes:
