How to replace the radiator of a VAZ 2110 stove (old model)

A faulty heating system sharply reduces the comfort level of the popular VAZ-2110 model; fogged up or frozen windows make driving unsafe. One of the common causes of heating system problems is a clogged or leaking radiator. When this unit depressurizes, antifreeze penetrates inside the cabin, which is indicated by a sharp, characteristic odor. Since antifreeze vapors are toxic, it is not advisable to be in the cabin.

It is impractical to repair this unit, therefore, in order to restore the operation of the heating system, you will need to replace the radiator of the VAZ-2110 stove. Despite the laboriousness of this process, you can do it yourself, since the repair does not require special knowledge, equipment or tools.

Construction of the VAZ-2110 heating system

The heating system of the VAZ-2110 has a complex design and consists of three main components:

  1. The heater unit, which provides heating for the interior, includes the following elements: a radiator that performs the function of heat exchange, a fan motor and a damper that directs the air flow, and a resistor for regulating the blowing speed.
  2. An air duct system that supplies heat throughout the cabin and heated windows.
  3. An electronic control unit, which includes a controller handle for setting the temperature in the cabin (SAUO), a temperature sensor that maintains a given temperature level.

Before replacing the heater radiator with a new one, you need to find out which one is installed on your car. Until September 2003, the VAZ-2110 model had radiators of the old design. Afterwards, a new modification of the radiator appeared. Old aluminum radiators are produced under catalog article 2110-8101050 by the manufacturer DAAZ. Options from other companies are offered for approximately the same price; Luzar, Bautler and others are popular. A more reliable option is a copper radiator, but it will cost significantly more. If you do not know which heater radiator was installed on your car, it is better to buy a copper one.

Old style stove

First, let's look at how to repair the heating radiator of an old-style stove. Its removal is done from the hood side as follows:

  1. Remove the rubber frill seal;
  2. We find the screw securing the frill under the main brake cylinder and unscrew it;
  3. We unscrew the screws securing the right part of the frill (there are 4 of them);
  4. We unhook the 2 clamps located on the frill, securing the hoses and wires;
  5. Disconnect the “plus” terminal and the “minus” wire of the fan;
  6. The left side of the frill needs to be moved forward without removing completely. To do this, just unscrew a couple of screws;
  7. Remove the windshield;
  8. If there is one, then the terminal of the sensor indicating the antifreeze level must be disconnected. Remove the steam exhaust hose from the expansion tank.

Next we shoot one by one:

  • Front window washer hose;
  • Windscreen wipers;
  • Windshield trim;
  • Clamps securing the heater body;
  • Its front part along with the fan;
  • Cabin filter;
  • Another part of the fan housing;
  • All hoses: supply, return and steam exhaust;
  • And finally, not without effort, we can remove the radiator housing.

If you have a copper one and you find a small leak in it, do not rush to throw it away; repair is quite possible for it. Copper is easy to solder, but if you do not have such experience, it is better to entrust this task to an experienced craftsman. Believe me - it's worth it.

Still, copper is in first place in terms of quality among radiators, followed by DAAZ. In any case, before replacing, inspect the unit, clean it, and assess whether it can be repaired.

When installing the same, cleaned, already fixed or new radiator, make sure that the pedal of the plastic fan housing (it is better to replace it with an aluminum one) fits exactly into the groove, otherwise the gearbox will not be able to change the position of the damper, and you will not receive heat.

Tool

Everything you need to replace a radiator can be found in the garage of an ordinary car enthusiast. If there is a need to replace the stove radiator, you will need to buy some materials and spare parts:

  • a set of wrenches, preferably with a ratchet and extension;
  • figured and flat screwdrivers;
  • a set of four new clamps;
  • about 4 liters of fresh antifreeze;
  • new heater radiator of the sample before September 2003;
  • bottle or canister for draining old antifreeze.

Additionally, water and a rag are needed to wash the removed parts, since they may contain old antifreeze, dirt, dust, etc. When working with plastic elements, you need to be careful not to break the latches and fastening points of the screws.

Heater radiator diseases

The heater radiator on the ten was hidden under a million panels, housings and partitions, so it was extremely difficult to get to it. And it was necessary to get there for several reasons:

  1. The heat exchanger was constantly clogged from the outside. The thin cabin filter did not catch small dust particles, which gradually settled in the radiator honeycombs. Some owners even abandoned such a cheap consumable item as a cabin filter, and then not only dust settled in the radiator, but also any debris that the car sucked up like a vacuum cleaner.
  2. The heater radiator was clogged from the inside. As a rule, this happened due to the desire to save on coolant. Then all sorts of “antifreeze” in quotation marks was poured into the cooling system, which was an incredibly useless and often downright harmful substance of a delicate blue color. At best, it was high-quality natural tap water, colored either blue, which is not so bad, or vitriol, which looks really disgusting. The result is scale, corrosion and cavitation.
  3. The quality of the radiators also left much to be desired. DAAZ radiators worked tolerably, because the company had been supplying spare parts to the assembly line for a thousand years, but new and unknown companies soldered and welded radiators extremely poorly and from poor materials. Hence the constant leaks of even new radiators, the places where the rubber pipes were attached were cracked.

Therefore, the radiator often required replacement.

Replacement procedure

The radiator of the VAZ-2110 stove is replaced from under the hood. Before starting work, carefully remove the insulation from the rear wall of the engine compartment. In the opened space you can see the stove body, which is under plastic protection. To remove the heater radiator, you will have to dismantle the wipers, plastic protection, air intakes, as well as the plastic ski under the windshield. When removing the ski, carefully remove the wiring that goes to the windshield washer. They are unhooked directly near the washer reservoir, then carefully removed from the engine compartment.

Next, the plastic housing containing the heating system radiator is dismantled. Before this, you need to unscrew all visible screws and carefully unclip the latches holding its components. This is a complex and painstaking job, in which there is no need to rush so as not to damage the fragile plastic parts.

When removing housing elements, do not damage the stove motor, which is attached to its cover. There is one more feature when dismantling the plastic protection. When removing the plastic housing that directly covers the heater radiator, it is necessary to unclip two latches that are located in its lower part. The problem is that they are absolutely invisible from the engine compartment; everything needs to be done with a screwdriver, carefully and by touch, so as not to break off these fasteners.

The radiator is located in the central part of the case and can be seen after removing the casing. On the right side there are hoses that go to the stove, and a hose leading to the expansion tank. To continue operation, you must drain the coolant from the cooling system. This can be done by unscrewing the hose that is attached to the injector. The disconnected hose must be taken out into some container so that it is below the level of the stove, then all the antifreeze will leave the radiator. After this, you can disconnect the hoses from the stove, since it will be dry.

Sometimes it happens that the hoses become woody, in which case it is better to simply cut them off and then replace them. After this, you can remove the heater radiator from the socket with virtually no effort. By looking at the removed part, you can identify leaks of antifreeze - a sure sign of depressurization of the radiator.

Having made sure that the stove radiator needs to be replaced, when purchasing a new unit, you need to pay attention to its model; you will need the old version, and the kit should include new pipes. In addition, buy new antifreeze, since some of it spills out when installing the heater radiator. A volume of 4 liters will be sufficient.

Before reassembling, thoroughly clean and rinse the seat, then install the heater radiator. Everything is put together in reverse order. When assembling a stove with an old-style heater, we pay attention to several important points. When reassembling the plastic case, you must make sure that its pedal fits into the groove intended for it. All components must clearly fit into their seat; if this is not done, there will be problems with the supply of warm air and the plastic casing will have to be disassembled again.

After assembly, antifreeze is poured through the expansion tank to the level so as not to get a cold heater radiator after repair, and the engine starts. When it warms up, you need to turn on the stove and let it run for a few minutes. This will help ensure that there are no leaks and that you can set the normal temperature inside the car. If the coolant level in the expansion tank drops, it must be topped up.

Search for reasons

If the stove stops working properly, you first need to determine what could have caused the malfunction. There are not many reasons:

  1. Airlock. It may appear when adding antifreeze to the cooling system. To remove the plug, you need to slightly lift the front of the car and turn the engine on at idle for about 10 minutes. If there was air in the system, it will come out. Next you will need to add coolant.
  2. Low antifreeze level. If there is insufficient amount of antifreeze, the cooling system will not function. Over time, it becomes less, so it is necessary to add antifreeze to the required level in the tank. If the stove does not work, continue to look for the reason.
  3. Switch. The fan rotation speed is set by a step controller. When you turn on the stove, it is only at maximum fan speed; operation is not provided in other modes, then the most likely cause of the breakdown is the stove resistor. It will have to be replaced with a new one.
  4. Weak flow at maximum speed. Also, the reason for the lack of heating may be the damper opening system. In most cases, this reason appears when the filter entering the cabin is dirty. The smell of dampness in the car will help determine this.
  5. Flow. This is the most common type of breakdown, which occurs in almost all VAZ car models. The appearance of a leak may be associated with a faucet or stove.
  6. Antifreeze in the cabin. If you find a puddle of coolant on the floor near the front passenger seat or smell an unpleasant odor, you need to check the radiator, as well as the tap. Separately, it is necessary to examine all the pipes that are secured with clamps.

Stories from our readers

“Fucking basin. "

Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.

Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. You’ll laugh, but I work directly on the phone)) If If you want to change your life like me, then here’s what I advise you to do right now: 1. Register on the site 2. Practice on a Demo account (it’s free). 3. As soon as you get something on the Demo account, top up your REAL ACCOUNT and go to REAL MONEY! I also advise you to download the application to your phone, it’s much more convenient to work from your phone. Download here.

  1. Old style heater (until September 2003)
  2. New model heater (after September 2003)

The procedure for replacing the heater radiator of the old and new models will not differ significantly, but I will still tell you separately.

So, we buy everything necessary to replace the radiator (you will need at least 4 clamps) and take a short Phillips screwdriver with tweezers (they will help when installing hard-to-reach latches). It is important to choose a good heater radiator!

Drain the antifreeze:

  1. You can drain some of the antifreeze from the engine block. Unscrew the cap of the expansion tank (so that the pressure drops) and unscrew the drain plug, which is located behind the ignition module (unscrew it and put it aside). About 4 liters of antifreeze should come out of the previously placed bucket (if it’s clean, you can refill it later).
  2. And you can only drain it through the expansion tank. We remove the hose from the stove and pour out about 1 liter of antifreeze. Next, remove this rubber pipe (so as not to interfere) by loosening the three clamps:

Further, depending on the heater, the replacement procedure is slightly different:

Replacing an old-style stove radiator

Replacing a new type stove radiator

The new type heater is attached to the body in the following places:

  1. One screw in the middle at the bottom end of the windshield
  2. Two nuts above the exhaust manifold
  3. One nut in the left corner (near the filter)

If there is a rear window washer fluid reservoir, then it also needs to be removed. The air filter is pressed to the heater with a plastic cover, which is attached to 4 self-tapping screws; remove the filter.
