Checking the mass air flow sensor VAZ 2110

The mass air flow sensor is an important sensor for regulating the fuel-air mixture. The mass air flow sensor counts the amount of air that passes through the sensor and sends this data to the engine control unit. And the control unit, based on the data received, calculates the amount of fuel supplied (duration of fuel injection by injectors). The mass air flow sensor is installed immediately after the air filter, in front of the throttle valve.

If the mass air flow sensor malfunctions, the engine performance becomes noticeably worse: the speed may begin to fluctuate, poor starting, “dullness” when picking up speed, increased fuel consumption, increased or decreased speed at idle, stalls when changing gears and other signs of improper operation.

There are several types of sensors, and they differ in operating principle: ultrasonic, hot-wire, mechanical (on old Opel and VW) and others. Today we will talk about hot-wire anemometers - these are the sensors that are installed on VAZ cars.

What is a DMRV?

This device is very necessary in order to determine the volume of air that fills the combustion chambers when the engine is running. The sensor is usually installed after the air filter in the power system.

When driving, the automobile power unit is supplied with 1 volume of fuel, as well as 14 equal parts of air. This prepares the correct fuel-air mixture. This is the key to proper operation of the motor in the most optimal modes for it. For any violation of this ratio, the car owner will observe either increased fuel consumption, or a decrease in the power of the power unit, or both. If you know the signs of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor, it is easy to identify a breakdown of the device.

The mass air flow sensor is necessary in order to accurately measure the required amount of air. This amount is calculated in the sensor itself and then sent to the ECU, where, based on these data, the required amount of fuel will be calculated.

The more the driver presses the accelerator pedal, the more air enters the combustion chambers. The sensor records the amount and sends a special command to the ECU to increase the volume of injected fuel. If the car is to run or drive more smoothly, then a small amount of air will be needed. This is why you need a mass air flow sensor. It measures the required volumes of air for engine operation with maximum accuracy.

Measuring the volume of air means determining the load that will be applied to the motor. When you press the accelerator pedal, the throttle valve opens and the volume of air received increases.

Sensor device

The sensor itself is a combination of two sensors - control and working, as well as a heating resistor.

The sensor is disassembled.

The platinum thread is visible in this photo.

As a result, air flow and temperature are converted into electrical impulses understandable to the ECU. This is a very gentle and accurate device; it allows you to calculate the cyclic filling of the cylinders with air and updates the parameters every 0.1 s.

Mass air flow sensor diagram.

The working body of the sensor is a heated platinum thread. It heats up to operating temperature (from 100 to 1000 degrees), and when air enters, it cools down. The amount by which the filament temperature drops is converted into an electrical signal and, based on this value, the ECU calculates the mass and temperature of the air entering the combustion chamber. And based on this data, it prepares the required portion of fuel. In short - yes.

Replacement and installation instructions

After dismantling the old non-working sensor, before purchasing, you can ask a friend for a temporary air flow sensor from his car, and then check it in your 2110. If with another sensor the engine works without interruptions, the consumption does not increase, then it’s time to replace your flow meter. This is the simplest diagnosis that can be carried out when the first signs of a malfunction appear.

We have studied the malfunctions and symptoms, what a mass air flow sensor is is now clear. If we succeed in checking, and we know that the flow meter is faulty, all that remains is to replace it. To do this, you need to prepare a replacement unit (you can buy a non-standard model) and a screwdriver. Visual inspection implies analysis, but let’s repeat it again:

    You need to turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition.

Installing a new element is done in exactly the same way.

The mass air flow sensor (MAF or flow meter) is an important part of the car, the proper operation of which determines the engine power and its fuel consumption. You can find it under the hood of the car, where it is located between the air filter and the air pipe directed to the throttle valve. The task of the mass air flow sensor is to measure the amount of air passing into the cylinders and transmit this information to the electronic control unit, that is, the “brains” of the machine. Based on the data from the mass air flow sensor, the control unit decides whether to increase or decrease the air supply to the combustible mixture.

If a mass air flow sensor fails, it is almost never repaired, but simply replaced with a new one. Its design is quite simple, and it consists of a housing in which a device for measuring air flow is placed - a hot-wire anemometer. It is enough to damage the diagnostic device during the process of dismantling the mass air flow sensor or cleaning it, and the entire sensor will need to be replaced. It can also fail after a long service life, but you can verify its malfunction only after checking.

Principle of operation

The piston stroke occurs when fuel is burned with air in a ratio of 1:14, maintaining which ensures optimal operation of the power plant. When the proportion decreases or increases, the engine does not stop working, but there is excessive fuel consumption or a decrease in engine operating power. We need a mass air flow sensor so that air flows in portions. The operation of the unit proceeds as follows: the VAZ 2110 air flow sensor calculates the portion of fresh air, and then sends the data to the main computer, which, based on this information, calculates the portion of fuel.

The harder you push the gas, the more filtered air the powerplant requires. The mass flow sensor detects the increase and commands the electronics to increase the amount of fuel. When moving at the same speed, each portion should be equal to the previous one. The mass air flow sensor receives data on the load of the power unit, and then calculates the required portion of air. When the driver presses the pedal, the throttle valve opens, thereby increasing the volume of intake air - the load increases. When the pedal is released, the load drops.

Advantages and disadvantages of absolute pressure and air temperature sensor

First, let's determine what advantages absolute pressure and air temperature sensors have over traditional flow meters. These advantages and disadvantages will allow you to determine what is best to install on your car and whether it makes sense.

So, let's start with the advantages:

The first advantage is the cost of the sensors. For example, for VAZ cars the cost of a mass flow sensor is about three thousand rubles. While DBP and DTV can be purchased in total for about 1,600 rubles. Service life. Problems often occur in the operation of mass air flow sensors - the device fails due to being clogged with dirt, and the sensitive element of the regulator may also wear out. If the mechanism becomes clogged, then, in principle, it can be cleaned, but if the problem lies precisely in the sensitive component, then it is unlikely to be replaced. In any case, the service life of flow meters is always limited

If we take into account temperature and absolute pressure regulators, they are usually installed for the entire life of the vehicle. Installing two regulators instead of one flow meter, as practice shows, allows for smooth idling on camshafts with the so-called “evil” phase, from 290 degrees and above. Excellent throttle response when pressed

Car owners who have already switched from mass air flow sensors to regulators note that such a system works faster, without “brakes”. More optimal operation of the power unit after replacement. A correctly installed system quickly calculates the required volume of air flow, accordingly, this will lead to the engine crankshaft spinning much faster. As a result, the power unit will produce higher power. Many car owners, after installing DAT and DTV instead of a flow meter, note that at idle speed the power unit operates much quieter. However, this advantage should not be taken as mandatory, since it depends on the efficiency of the engine, as well as its design features. Installation of such a system is possible on turbocharged engines

Excellent responsiveness of the gas pedal when pressed. Installation of such a system is possible on turbocharged engines.

These are the main advantages of switching from flow meters to DAT and DTV.

Despite all the advantages, such systems also have certain disadvantages:

  1. In cars with factory firmware it will not be possible to install such a system. To implement it you will need special sports firmware.
  2. Installing such a system is quite a complicated task, and not every car enthusiast can cope with it. If you belong to the category of car owners who can only fill the expansion tank with washer fluid or change the engine oil, then it is better not to take on this task. If you make mistakes (and without knowledge you will certainly make them), this will lead to a deterioration in engine performance. You will not be able to experience all the benefits of installing DAT and DTV, plus, you will throw away money on the implementation of this scheme.
  3. Another point why you shouldn’t take on this activity without specialists is the need to understand the firmware. And not just look at the main parameters or find out the version, but also work with the firmware, changing the values and adjusting the system to your needs. At the very least, you will need a qualified professional to perform this task.
  4. Such systems actually do not meet modern toxicity standards. With a big stretch, according to toxicity standards, they can be classified as Euro 3 (the author of the video is the Lty D channel).

Basic faults

The mass air flow sensor rarely fails and requires repair, but it is important to know what the signs of its malfunction are:

  1. Fuel consumption increases. This can be determined by the on-board computer. If the flow meter malfunctions, fuel consumption increases by a liter or more.
  2. The car's power decreases.
  3. Uneven operation of the power unit. The car either accelerates slowly or picks up speed too quickly.
  4. The engine does not start or does not start the first time.
  5. Idle speed is floating.

The listed signs do not necessarily indicate a breakdown of the flow meter; the reasons may be the malfunction of other devices, which will require their repair. Therefore, it is necessary to check the serviceability of the flow meter.

What are the malfunctions of the mass air flow sensor in the VAZ-2110

The MAF indicators determine the correct mixture formation of the air-fuel mass in the VAZ-2110. Malfunctions and inaccuracies in the coordinated operation of all components of a single sensor system provoke problems in the operation of the device, and it may also be impossible to start the engine in the car.

How to check frequency-type air flow sensor

Let's look at the example of Citroen Peugeot 1.6 HDI diesel. A similar four-wire MAF sensor is found on the models shown below.

To check, you will need a diagnostic scanner or multimeter that supports this function.

Sensor pinout:

  1. Intake temperature sensor output signal.
  2. Weight.
  3. Not involved.
  4. On-board voltage +12V.
  5. Frequency signal from the sensor.

Connect:

  • Second Pin – “ground”
  • The fifth Pin is the output signal.

At rest with the ignition on, the output frequency should be 5 kHz.

After starting the engine at idle, the frequency should decrease and vary from 1.02 to 3.3 kHz. For each frequency mass air flow sensor frequency table.

Types of mass air flow sensors

We will consider a sensor that makes it possible to determine the volume of incoming air using the example of the VAZ 2110. In the VAZ-2110, as in other cars, the device is located inside the air pipe, near the filter, and is responsible for recording the air flow coming out of the filter.
Mass air flow sensors are constantly being improved; today there are several meters that calculate consumed air:

  1. The main component is a pitot tube. The plate fixed in the sensor changes position under the influence of air flow. The inclination angle of the plate is measured by a potentiometer, which in turn changes the resistance. This serves as a signal for the control unit to determine the volume of incoming air.
  2. The mass production of modern mass air flow sensor devices requires the presence of hot-wire measuring mechanisms in the sensors. The heat exchanger contains 2 thin plates made of platinum. After energy is supplied to the plates to warm them up, one of them remains working, and the second - control. The MAF sensor in this design makes it possible to ensure a constant, identical temperature touching the 2 plates.
  3. The working elements of the film meter are silicon wafers coated with platinum.

Installation location

To save fuel, modern cars are equipped with injection engines with electronic ignition. In a simplified form, an injector is a point injection of a mixture through an injector into a cylinder or into the intake tract. The ECU is usually called the “brain” of the car; it is this housing that regulates the four main parameters of the ECM electronic control system:

  • the ratio of fuel and air in it.
  • download frequency;
  • fuel mixture dose;
  • injection time;

To obtain this data, the principle of remote sensors was used. For example, the moment of injection is determined by the readings of the crankshaft sensor DPKV, and the mass air flow sensor is responsible for the proportions of the mixture. All air entering a car engine passes through the throttle valve, which is located between the intake manifold and the air filter.

Verification methods

There are several ways to check the mass air flow sensor with your own hands.

Shutdown

One way to check the flow meter is to turn it off. To do this, you need to remove the connector that connects the mass air flow sensor to the VAZ 2110 system.

Disconnecting the connector from the device

In this case, emergency mode is activated, the amount of air required is calculated based on the throttle position. If the car moves more dynamically with the sensor disabled, it needs to be replaced or repaired; perhaps cleaning will help.

Checking with a multimeter

To check, you need a multimeter and knowledge of repairs and how to handle the tester. The measuring device must be set to constant pressure measurement mode, designated by the letter V or DCV.

Multimeter for testing

To understand the operation of the mass air flow sensor, you need to know its pinout:

  • a pink or red-black wire leads to the central unit;
  • green wire – grounding;
  • The white-gray wire is intended for voltage output;
  • The yellow wire is used to supply current to the signal input.

Ignition coils

On the original Bosch ignition coil, the quality of the drawings is more accurate and clear. On the fake, all the drawings are shown with a dotted line - ordinary strokes.

The labels on the packages are identical, the labels are also identical.

Let's see what's inside. Even in appearance, the fake reel looks like Chinese garbage - it does not correspond to BOSCH quality. The stickers are green everywhere. The original is darker, the fake is lighter.

If you look closely, all the contacts to which the high-voltage wires are connected are curved, that is, one faces to the left, the other to the right.

The metal color of the contacts inside is yellow, on the original it is white. Made carefully.

Symptoms of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor on a VAZ-2110

Now about the symptoms of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor. You need to understand that you can definitely blame the mass air flow sensor only after accurate computer diagnostics of the engine management system. Even the on-board computer can easily make mistakes. However, we will try to identify the breakdown without involving specialists.

Symptoms of a sensor malfunction may coincide with symptoms of other malfunctions :

  1. Increased or floating idle speed.
  2. It is impossible to adjust the CO level at idle.
  3. The engine stalls immediately after starting, the speed is maintained only when the throttle is open.
  4. Increased fuel consumption.
  5. The Check Engine light comes on.
  6. Dips when changing speed, loss of power and dynamics.

The symptoms, as we see, are standard for any malfunction of the power and ignition systems. This means that a more detailed check and verification of the parameters with the nominal ones is necessary.

Check: parameters and compatibility

Sensor for Bosch M 7.9.7 controller – number 0 280 212 116 according to the VAZ catalog.

The difficulty in calculating the parameters and ratings of the sensor lies in the fact that different devices with different ratings were installed at VAZ at different times and on different engines . These ratings were programmed into the electronic control unit and if we install a sensor of a different type (although visually it may be exactly the same), the control system will no longer work correctly. Dozens were equipped with sensors from GM, Bosch, Siemens , and a domestic sensor from Arzamas or Saratov .

The calibration for each of them is different. Only after 2004 did VAZ decide on the type of sensor and its ratings - this is a Bosch device of the HFM5 type in three modifications:

  • the first was the mass air flow sensor HFM5-4.7 , according to the Bosch catalog its number is 0 280 212 004, and according to the VAZ catalog it is 21083-1130010-01;
  • HFM5-4.7 with article number 0 280 212 037 (21083-1130010-10 according to the VAZ catalogue);
  • HFM5-CL , catalog number 0 280 212 116 or 21083-1130003-20 according to the VAZ book.

Peculiarities

We conclude that the sensor is selected not by the number of valves or engine size, but solely by the firmware version and ECU model.

Bosch sensor (21083-1130010-01) for controller January version 5.1.

For example, for the Bosch M7.9.7 ECU it is necessary to use the Bosch mass air flow sensor 0 280 212 116, and for the January controller version 5.1 - only Bosch 21083-1130010-01. That is, even if a sensor is installed from the factory that does not correspond to the ECU firmware, you cannot expect correct engine operation and normal fuel consumption. By the way, there are often cases when sensors were installed from the factory that do not correspond to the firmware version. Therefore, the first check is for compatibility. And then we take a multimeter and go into battle.

Prevention and testing of mass air flow sensor on VAZ 2110

As a preventive measure, we can recommend timely replacement of the air filter. The use of sports zeros shortens the life of the flow meter. In any case, regular cleaning of the air flow sensor will not hurt.

  1. We disconnect the sensor connector, having first removed the ground from the battery.
  2. Carefully unscrew the flow meter housing from the intake manifold flange.
  3. If dust deposits are detected, blow out the cavities with compressed air.
  4. Of course, you also need to clean the air duct and air filter box at the same time.

Tip: It is recommended to repeat this operation every time you replace the air filter.

If the contamination is severe (with oil and moisture), you can use a special cleaner for flow meters or carburetors; the manufacturer does not matter. To do this, it is necessary to direct the jet not only to visible sensors, but also to hidden cavities where the platinum resistor (thread) is located.

After this, the flow meter is installed in its regular place and the functionality of the electronic part is checked.

Description

The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is located near the air filter to determine the amount of flow passing through the air filter. When a sensor fails, the controller usually generates an error, but if the sensor simply does not meet its original characteristics, this can affect the power characteristics of the machine.

How to check

You can check the serviceability of the sensor as follows: - If you notice that the car has begun to accelerate sluggishly and there is a suspicion of a mass air flow sensor, then you can check this in a simple way. 1. Disconnect the sensor connector. 2. Start the engine. 3. Engine speed should become more than 1500. Try to drive. If you feel that the car has become “faster”, then this indicates a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor; it should be replaced with a new one.

Differences between different versions of mass air flow sensors

There are 3 modifications of air flow sensors: 004, 037, 116. 004 was placed under the Rossiya 82 toxicity standards. 037 was installed on an ECU with a resonant DD and “Russia 83” or “Euro-1” standards. The 116 version was installed on Euro-1 and Euro-2 cars. The latest version of the MAF 116 has a built-in air temperature sensor. Therefore, sensors 004 and 037 (they do not have a temperature sensor) can be replaced with 116, but not vice versa.

Different versions of sensors differ slightly in calibrations. If you install a different version of the sensor (for example, 116 instead of 037), then you need to adjust its calibrations in the controller firmware.

Calibrations of versions 037 and 116 DMRV

Below are instructions for replacing the sensor.

The Bosch 116 mass air flow sensor or mass air flow sensor is a regulator designed to control the volume of air that enters the engine. This controller is one of the elements of electronic engine control systems with fuel injection. In this article we will try to answer the question of how models 116 and 037 differ.

Methods for checking sensor functionality

How to check the flow meter yourself? There are several diagnostic options, we suggest you familiarize yourself with each of them (the author of the video is the Bezdelnik TV channel).

The first method is to disable the sensor

This verification method is the simplest. Every car owner can do it. The first step is to turn off the sensor. To do this, you just need to unplug the connector. Then you should start the engine. As a result, the ECU controller will go into emergency mode. And the supply of the fuel mixture will be regulated only using the throttle valve. Idle speed will be around 1500 rpm. After this, you need to check in by car. If the car has improved its dynamic acceleration characteristics, then it makes sense to look for signs of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor.

Method No. 2 - flashing the electronic control unit

If the standard firmware has been changed, then it is unknown what reaction of the controller is programmed in it in case of an emergency. In this case, you should try to insert a 1mm thick plate under the throttle stop. The turnover should increase. Now you need to pull out the chip from the air flow meter. If the power unit continues to work, then the cause of the malfunction is the firmware.

Method No. 3 - installing a working sensor

Install a known good part and start the engine. If after replacement it begins to work better, the motor does not stall, then replacement or repair of the device is required.

Method No. 4 - visual inspection

To do this, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the clamp holding the air collector corrugation. Then you need to disconnect the corrugation and inspect the internal surfaces of the air collector corrugation and the sensor.

Inspection of duct corrugation

There should be no traces of oil or condensation on them, the surfaces should be dry and clean. If you do not take care of the air filter and change it rarely, then dirt can get on the sensitive element of the sensor and cause it to break. This is the most common malfunction. Traces of oil may appear in the flow meter if the oil level in the crankcase is high, or if the oil sump of the crankcase ventilation system is clogged. If necessary, you need to clean the surfaces using special cleaning products.

Stories from our readers

“Fucking basin. "

Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.

Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. You’ll laugh, but I work directly on the phone)) If If you want to change your life like me, then here’s what I advise you to do right now: 1. Register on the site 2. Practice on a Demo account (it’s free). 3. As soon as you get something on the Demo account, top up your REAL ACCOUNT and go to REAL MONEY! I also advise you to download the application to your phone, it’s much more convenient to work from your phone. Download here.

Let's try to go for a ride. If the car feels “faster”, then we can say that the mass air flow sensor is not working.

By the way, for ECU Y7.2, M7.9.7. The speed does not increase when the chip is turned off!

Method No. 2: Alternative ECU firmware. If the standard firmware of the controller was replaced with another, then it is unknown what is built into it in case of emergency mode in method No. 1. Try sliding a 1mm thick plate under the damper stop. The revs will rise. Pull out the chip from the mass air flow sensor. If it doesn’t stall, it means the problem is with the firmware, or rather with the IAC steps in emergency mode without a mass air flow sensor.

Method No. 3: Checking the mass air flow sensor with a multimeter. This method works on Bosch sensors with catalog numbers: 0 280 218 004, 0 280 218 037, 0 280 218 116. Turn on the tester in the DC voltage measurement mode, set the measurement limit to 2 Volts. DMRV pinout:

  1. Yellow (closest to the windshield) - mass air flow sensor signal input;
  2. Gray-white—sensor supply voltage output;
  3. Green — sensor grounding output;
  4. Pink-black - to the main relay.

External signs of a malfunction of the VAZ 2110 mass air flow sensor

This is the third way to diagnose the sensor. To determine its serviceability, carefully inspect the internal cavities of the air pipe where the mass air flow sensor is mounted. In order to do this, you will need a shaped screwdriver. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the corrugated pipe. The surface of the corrugation should be as dry as possible, without an oil film.

It should be noted that the main signs of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor are dirt on the working surface. It is formed due to the fact that the air filter was not replaced in time. Oil deposits will tell the driver that the oil level in the lubrication system is high or that the oil cutter is not working properly. With these signs, the sensor may still work, but will soon fail.

Next you need to completely remove the mass air flow sensor. You will find signs of a malfunction after a visual inspection of the device. To carry out this operation, you will need a 10mm wrench. Unscrew the two screws and remove the device from the air filter housing. A rubber seal will come out with the sensor. If the seal remains in the housing, this is the main sign of imminent failure.

Is the air flow sensor covered? Don't rush to buy a new one

A new sensor costs from 2 to 3.2 thousand rubles. But before we run to the nearest store or car market, let’s try to bring the old one back to life. This method of resuscitation does not provide a 100% guarantee of restoration of functionality. But it's worth a try.

First, disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Remove the sensor from the vehicle. Remove it from the air filter housing. Disassemble the device using a Phillips screwdriver. Be careful with platinum threads, do not touch them with your hands or other objects. Clean with carburetor cleaner. Spray the liquid 3-4 times onto the areas indicated by arrows in the photo. Assemble the mass air flow sensor and install it on the car.

Accompanying photos to the process

Do not touch the platinum threads in the mass air flow sensor, as this can damage the working sensor. The mass air flow sensor can be disassembled using a Phillips screwdriver and pliers. You can try to revive the mass air flow sensor using carburetor fluid.
If you are a little lucky and act carefully, you will be able to save a couple of thousand rubles

In conclusion, I would like to note that a drop in power and an increase in fuel consumption do not always indicate a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor. But if such symptoms appear, check the air flow sensor first. Its initial diagnosis can be performed independently. An accurate check is carried out using special equipment at a service station. Be careful with your car - it will save your money and time.

How can the regulators of these models differ from each other and is it possible to install 116 instead of 037? There are differences between these controllers, and the point is not in the MAF pinout. After all, if these models were the same, what would be the point of giving them different names?

So, how do the controllers differ from each other and is it possible to install model 116 instead of 037:

  1. The first difference that can be guessed based on the technical characteristics is that the 037 model can produce data with an error during operation. Of course, an error of 2.5% is not critical, but it does exist.
  2. Device 037 is intended for installation in VAZ 2111, 2112, 2123, 21214 cars, which are equipped with controllers M 1.5.4, January 5.1-5.1.3, etc.
  3. As for model 116, its use is relevant on Ladas 21114, 21124, 21214. Installation of this device is allowed on Kalina and Priora. Installation of the device is allowed on cars equipped with M 7.9.7 and January 7.2 controllers.

If you encounter a problem with the device not working, then when replacing it you need to install the same model that has already been installed. But it is worth considering that 037 is not a common option like 116, so it is more difficult to find. The latter, in turn, is more common, and its cost is lower.

Replacement is allowed, but experts do not recommend this. This is because these devices differ in their calibration, so in case of replacement, you will have to change the parameters of the control unit. And you can only get into the “brains” of a car if you understand what needs to be done and have minimal experience.

The subject is this: I have a VAZ 21140 2004 model year. with brains BOSCH 7.9.7. On it the mass air flow sensor died, the readings are 1.02-1.04, depending on the case, and secondary signs: the revolutions drop when the clutch is depressed to 500-600, increased fuel consumption (11-12l/100km), difficult cold starts.

Cleaning the sensor

If you observe signs of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor, then you can try cleaning the device.

By the way, this is the most expensive sensor of all in the line of front-wheel drive VAZ cars. But if yours is broken, don’t rush to change it. There is a small chance of restoring his “health”. For the cleaning process you will need a special liquid that is used to clean the carburetor. Star keys are also useful. Unscrew the clamp, as well as the two “10” bolts. Remove the pipe and take out the sensor. Spray the liquid onto the wire and tube. Work with extreme care, wait until this liquid has completely evaporated and leave the device to dry.

While the device is drying, remove the throttle assembly. You will see plaque inside the throttle assembly. It needs to be removed with liquid. This dirt causes problems with the entire system. Because of it, problems with the mass air flow sensor appear, signs of a malfunction of the VAZ 2115, which bother beginners on automobile forums.

Do not remove the throttle cable. Place the knot on a cloth and treat particularly dirty areas with the liquid. Don't forget to clean the idle air control valve and the space underneath it.

After this, most likely, all signs of problems with the mass air flow sensor will go away, of course, provided that the sensor has no mechanical damage. Therefore, do not wait until you have the first signs of such problems, but take such prevention this coming weekend. It won't take you much time, and your car will truly breathe. You won't recognize your engine. It will start much better, its traction will improve, and you will notice an increase in the power of your engine.

Carry out such preventive maintenance regularly, and your car will thank you.

Features of cleaning the regulator

How to clean the regulator by washing? In some cases, cleaning actually helps to extend the life of the flow meter; this process can be called a component of repair. For cleaning, you can use specialized products designed for this specific purpose. You can also use WD-40 liquid or carburetor cleaner.

How to wash the flow meter yourself:

  1. First, you need to dismantle the mass air flow sensor, we talked about this in more detail above.
  2. Once you have the device in your hands, you will need to use a cleaning agent to wash all sensitive components of the regulator. In particular, we are talking about wire mesh, thermal sensor, and contacts. When cleaning, be as careful as possible and regularly monitor the level of pressure of the jet from the cylinder. Please note that the stream itself should not be too strong; it is best to keep the balloon at a distance of approximately 5-10 cm from the device.
  3. Wait a few minutes, then apply the cleanser again, wait a little again. The cleaning procedure must be carried out several times, but as practice shows, usually three times is enough to obtain the desired result.
  4. Then, you need to pour distillate with alcohol into a medical syringe (you can find it in any pharmacy). Using a syringe, treat all sensitive components of the device, as well as contacts, this will allow them to be thoroughly cleaned.

Replacing the mass air flow sensor in the Kalina model

When the owner of a Lada Kalina feels a deterioration in engine performance along with the presence of the above symptoms, or a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor is identified during a thorough diagnosis, it is not recommended to delay the procedure for replacing the component. If repairs are neglected, the problem will begin to progress, causing the LADA Kalina engine to “lose” its full functionality. The replacement process itself is very simple and does not require detailed comments. It is recommended to observe safety measures regarding preliminary de-energization of the on-board network by disconnecting the terminals from the battery.

How do they check the sensor in Kalina?

How to check the DMRV? It is possible to perform diagnostics manually in a regular garage.

The following methods will come to the rescue here.

  1. Turn off the air sensor and start the engine. In this case, the ECU switches to operating according to the emergency program. The air-fuel mixture is prepared only in accordance with the position of the valve in the throttle assembly. We start moving and feel a change in dynamics in a positive direction. Verdict - replace the sensor!
  2. Alternative firmware version of the on-board engine control module. It is possible that the firmware was previously replaced and the owner of the Lada Kalina does not know what exactly is “hardwired” in it in case of activation of the emergency engine operation program (with the mass air flow sensor disabled). In this option, we place a plate 1 mm thick under the damper stop. The revs will naturally rise. At this moment we remove the “chip” from the connector on the sensor. If the motor stops, then the firmware itself is to blame, or rather, the steps of the XX regulator for emergency mode.
  3. We measure the voltage at the terminals of the connected mass air flow sensor. We set the multimeter to a range with a limit of 2 Volts. Turn on the ignition and take measurements. The absence of a malfunction will be confirmed by a voltage value of 1.01-1.02 V.
  4. We inspect visually. Using a screwdriver, remove the clamp and corrugated pipe of the air supply system to the manifold. We remove the sensor itself and look at its external condition. There are no traces of moisture or scratches. If the air sensor is covered with a film of oil, then we suspect the engine for wear of its elements or the crankcase ventilation system.
