What modifications are required after installing a new motor?

Brake system

. It is necessary to change the brake discs and pads, as well as install VUT from 2108 through an adapter. The rear brake system also requires the installation of new elements. With a significant increase in power, it is imperative to install a front brake system from 2112, and a ready-made set of disc brakes is mounted on the rear axle.

Transmission

. Unfortunately, the gearbox cannot be strengthened in any way. The installation of new bearings and synchronizers will allow you to digest the torque, which is at least twice as high as the factory values. The elastic coupling of the propeller shaft is replaced with a reinforced one. The rear axle gearbox must be supplemented with a self-locking differential with a preload of no more than 5 kg. You also need to install reinforced axle shafts, which have twice the torsional strength.

Chassis

. The shock absorbers are gas-oil all around. It is advisable to lower the suspension by 50mm. When lowered, the rear axle can move forward or backward, so the reaction rods are installed with the possibility of adjustment. Regarding the levers: either reinforced ball joints are installed on standard levers, or, ideally, the installation of new levers is required, where the lower lever has a shifted area for the ball joint, thereby unloading the lower ball joint.

Steering

Bored cylinders will burn the greatest amount of fuel in the same amount of time, thereby increasing the throttle response of the engine.
  • increase the piston stroke by using a new crankshaft, which has a large eccentricity, and selecting appropriate pistons and connecting rods for it. As a rule, lightweight connecting rods in this case are installed, since weight in this case plays an important role. The new piston group allows to significantly increase efficiency and, accordingly, power. At the end of such tuning, it is advisable to install a lightweight flywheel in order to relieve the load on the crankshaft and clutch, which will certainly have a positive effect on the dynamics and acceleration of the car.

Compression ratio

  • The very concept of compression ratio implies the ratio of the combustion chamber to the total volume of the cylinders. This will simultaneously significantly increase efficiency, engine power and reduce fuel consumption.
  • These indicators can be achieved by installing a new camshaft with completely different geometric parameters. Thus, the new element is able to increase the volume of the combustion chamber, while the engine volume remains unchanged. Such work is best carried out together with the installation of a turbine (see below - note). However, remember that this work is not cheap.
  • You also need to know that when installing such a camshaft, the octane number of the gasoline being poured must be increased, as well as improving the engine oil being poured, which has the lowest friction coefficients. When carrying out such tuning, compression units can increase to 10 units.

Throttle valve

Many owners of VAZ two-wheelers resort to engine tuning by increasing the diameter of the throttle valve. Of course, to increase the volume of the air mixture, such tuning is advisable. In stores you can find dampers with a diameter from 52 to 56 mm. However, please note that by increasing the diameter of the damper, you will also have to change the pipes. Quite often, failures occur not because of problems with volume, but because the throttle valve is clogged, in which case it needs to be cleaned.

Inlet receiver

Installation of a zero resistance filter

A zero-resistance filter, or simply “zero filter,” is mounted instead of the air filter and its housing. It is designed to reduce the resistance of incoming air into the system. Large filter throughput allows you to increase engine power by a couple of percent. Remember that the correct choice of filter and impregnation for it is the key to proper engine operation.

This tuning is one of the most affordable.

Channels and valves

  • The exhaust and inlet channels are supposed to be ground , increasing the diameter at the inlet, and not changing the diameter at the outlet. We remove all irregularities and various joints that can in any way slow down the flow.
  • Valves - it is better to use special lightweight or increased diameter ones. It is also expected to use the stiffest or sportiest springs, as well as lightweight valve plates.

An exhaust manifold

This system is designed to improve the release of exhaust gases. People call this system “spider”, and there can be mainly two options: “4-1”, “4-2-1”.

It is advisable to install the exhaust system after working with the gas distribution mechanism, pistons, “nulevik” or chip tuning. Single-purpose installation of this system will not bring the desired results.

Fuel supply

Conventional injectors are not enough to operate the engine at high speeds. Since they are constantly in operation, the working pressure in the ramp is simply not enough. In order to increase engine power, you should install the most efficient nozzles, which can increase the volume of sprayed liquid several times. Such changes work most effectively with the 4-2-1 release technology.

Turbocharging

  • The most effective, widespread and most expensive type of tuning is the installation of a turbine. After all, it is known that in order to increase engine power, it is necessary to supply the largest amount of a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinders.
  • However, to increase the volume of fuel, a mandatory increase in the amount of air will be required, which is what the turbine does. The exhaust gases enter the turbine impeller, then it rotates and drives the compressor, which in turn pumps air into the cylinders.
  • Since the air is pumped under pressure, its quantity increases significantly, which leads to an increase in fuel combustion, which results in an increase in power.
  • Remember that installing a turbine will lead to a mandatory upgrade of the cooling system (diagram of a standard cooling system here).

Is it worth replacing the unit?

It should be noted that recently, quite often, a new engine is being installed in place of the old one. Some engines may be suitable for the vehicle in question and only minor modifications are required to correct the problem. However, during the work the following problems may arise:

  • The engine may not fit the transmission.
  • When installing it, you will have to change the position of some important units: generator, radiator, fuel pump. There is also a high probability that the mount in the engine compartment will not be suitable for the selected engine.
  • A significant increase in power leads to the need to replace or upgrade other units.
  • The cost of the work carried out is very high, and the result is quite vague.

The above points determine whether it is necessary to carry out work to completely replace the power unit. As a rule, when doing the work on their own, many mechanics decide to modify an already installed engine. An exception is the case when the motor is in poor condition.

What will installing a 1.8 receiver on a 1.6 engine in LADA give?

One of the owners of Lada Priora decided to do engine tuning by installing a receiver (intake module) from a 1.8-liter VAZ 21179 (from Lada XRAY or Lada Vesta, article number 21177-1008600-00) on the 1.6-liter VAZ 21126 engine. He determined the effectiveness of such modification in several ways.

Why was the receiver from VAZ 21179 chosen?

:

  • it is as similar as possible to the VAZ 21126 receiver;
  • it is plastic, which means it will not heat the intake air so much, which will have a positive effect on the filling as a whole;
  • According to numerous tests, he showed the results of almost TOP receivers.

Malfunctions

VAZ 21124 engines have the same set of characteristic disadvantages characteristic of all VAZ engines. The most common:

Test No. 1

For maximum accuracy, measurements were taken on one day. First on a standard receiver, then it was replaced with a 21179 receiver, and again for tests. The test results are presented in the graph (black - receiver 21126; red - receiver 21179):

Neither Cycle Filling (CN) nor Mass Air Flow (MAF) have changed much. The central cycle has only shifted a little to the top (4500-7000 rpm), and this is logical, because compared to the standard receiver, the channels of the 21179 receiver are slightly shorter (460 mg/c at 4600 rpm and 5200 rpm, respectively ). The owner believes that the low end (XX-2500 rpm) and midrange (2500-4500 rpm) remained the same, both in terms of graph and feel. But at the top the car rides more confidently.

Test No. 2

Acceleration was measured using a special Drag-On device. As a result of the races, a table of measurements was compiled on different configurations (the last measurement on the receiver was made on light forged wheels, all the rest on conventional stamping):

On the standard receiver, acceleration to 100 km/h was 9.2 seconds, on the 21179 receiver - 9.1 seconds (different disks could affect the result). A noticeable difference is felt at a distance of 400 m. Receiver 21126 - 16.5 seconds, and on 21179 - 16.0 seconds.

Conclusion

  • Receiver 21179 showed itself better than 21126, as an alternative to the standard one - this is an excellent option.
  • Receiver 21179 is not a sports receiver as it is presented in tests.
  • The appropriate price for the 21179 receiver is 3,500 rubles (now it is sold for 5,000 rubles).
  • With the receiver 21179 the response to pressing the gas pedal has become clearer. When you lightly press the gas pedal, the traction has become better (you can feel the acceleration, there is no need to press the pedal harder as before), the top has become brighter.

  • Such actions lead to a reduction in the load on the crankshaft and clutch, which speeds up the acceleration of the car and increases its dynamics.
  • Slightly easier tuning of the stock VAZ 2112 engine, cylinder boring
  • The method is based on the fact that engines, as a rule, all have a margin of thickness at the cylinder walls (reserve margin)
  • From this we can conclude that the volume of the cylinders can be increased by boring; by grinding down the walls, we increase the volume due to them
  • This will immediately increase the engine power, because the bored cylinders begin to burn a larger volume of fuel per unit of time.
  • Do-it-yourself boring is not done, only on specialized equipment
  • After boring, pistons and rings of repair size are installed

What do you need to buy for installation?

  • The minimum required (seals, gaskets, spark plugs, etc.).
  • Crankshaft bearing from 2101. This bearing will play the role of supporting the gearbox input shaft. The crankshaft of the 16 valve engine must be machined for the bearing. Don't forget to fill the bearing with new grease. Often they forget to fill the bearings with grease.
  • The flywheel can be purchased ready-made. You can take a lightweight flywheel from 2112 with a crown 2101, since we still have the starter from the previous engine.
  • The clutch will consist of a 2112 kit and an adapter release bearing.
  • Ideally, the pallet is purchased ready for installation on a classic. Otherwise, a standard pallet will need to be tamped down in some places.
  • Ready set of cooling system pipes 2101 16v. The system is made for a 2101 thermostat and an aluminum radiator.
  • Complete exhaust system kit for 16v.
  • Remote fuel pump, or a complete set of EBN in a classic tank.
  • Flat valve cover with convenient location of the breather pipe.
  • Engine mounts from VAZ 2121 or supports on silent blocks.
  • Diffuser with fans from Chevrolet Niva.

Motor installation

To install a new unit, you will need to assemble a new motor and install it on the brackets, attaching the nuts to the pads. Next, the motor is mated to the gearbox. Please note that the gearbox is secured with three bolts. Next, the cooling system is assembled and the braid is extended from the control unit. There are no difficulties during installation, since you just need to connect the connectors to all sensors, as well as connect the fuel pump. If desired, a lambda probe can be connected or a snag can be installed. To save fuel, I recommend leaving the oxygen sensor.

Gasoline supply

I think there is no need to explain the importance of maintaining a stable, constant gasoline pressure in the injector rail:

  • During normal city driving, the standard fuel regulator is sufficient at high speeds, but a situation arises that with the injectors constantly open, it leads to a general decrease in pressure in the rail
  • As a result, the fuel supply decreases, poor atomization results, and engine malfunction
  • Therefore, boosting the engine requires increasing the pressure by 0.5 - 1 atmosphere, it all depends on the degree of boosting the engine
  • Naturally, it will be necessary to adjust the injection program to ensure the correct mixture composition
  • Today, in the latest (so-called “transitional”) models, as well as new 1.6-liter engines, a drainless system is used; the RTD is located in the tank with the fuel pump assembly and creates a higher pressure of 3.8 Atmospheres

Injectors

A natural process when, when boosting the engine, a situation often arises that the performance (amount of fuel supplied) is simply not enough:

  • In this case, you will need to replace the nozzles, install more efficient ones, or install a second row of nozzles
  • Option two is quite difficult and time-consuming, and it is not always possible to implement it even in a standard block.
  • Therefore, it is easier to install more efficient injectors, having a productivity from +15% to +50% (and it is undesirable to use publicly available injectors used on GAZ cars; apart from high productivity, they have no more advantages)
  • The disadvantages are the speed and non-linear characteristic at the beginning of its range, where a regular car has XX
  • In addition, as a rule, 4-2-1 “spiders” are installed on souped-up cars, which work well in a wide speed range
  • Spiders of the 4-1 system did not take root in civilian tuning due to the narrow range of their effective operation
  • And the principle of operation of the exhaust is based on the vacuum created in front of the closed exhaust valve, this contributes to improved purging of the cylinder

If you decide to use standard products, then you need to carry out additional manipulations with them. They should be significantly lightened and ground in. The manufacturer does not include these stages in the production process. Therefore, this gap must be filled on our own.
