    The model range of the Volzhsky plant contains a lot of excellent VAZ models, among which are 2114, 2110, 2112, as well as 2109 and 2107. The Seven, VAZ-2107, is considered a truly classic model, but other options also have a lot of their advantages. A comfortable interior, anatomical seats for comfortable sitting of both the driver and passengers, armrests in certain models - all this is designed to give the person in the car more comfort and convenience. The design is not so archaic; the VAZ steering column has a special plate, thanks to which the shaft, consisting of several stages, folds in the event of an accident, and the steering wheel does not injure the driver. The worm gear of the VAZ gearbox and the lever system significantly reduce the effort that the driver spends on turning the wheel. Despite this, driving a “five”, or any other “classic”, requires considerable physical strength.

    Inside the steering column of the “five” there is a cardan transmission that leads to the gearbox. The VAZ steering shaft crosspiece is used for connection. The entire mechanism is quite reliable and can withstand very long runs. All parts are made from high quality steel and are carefully inspected before assembly or sale. Thanks to this, there are very few accidents of Lada cars due to complete failure of the steering, and repair of load-bearing parts is required only in case of serious damage.

    The most complex part of the mechanism is the steering gear, which is based on a worm gear. Since the worm gear is initially characterized by gaps and is subject to wear, a special adjusting bolt is built into the gearbox housing. It presses the bipod shaft, preventing gaps from causing the wheel to wobble.

    The steering gear mechanism is in an oil bath, thereby reducing its wear. Regular transmission oil, an analogue of TAD-17, is poured into the gearbox. The steering rods of the “five” are mounted on hinges protected by rubber boots. The steering does not require constant injection and lubrication, but it is necessary to periodically inspect the boots for integrity. To assemble or disassemble the rods, you will need special pullers; you can make them yourself.

    Over the years of operation it has been proven that the steering on VAZ 2107 vehicles has impressive reliability. However, this does not take away the fact that the machine requires periodic inspection and repair.

    1. When performing maintenance, it is important to check for increased play as well as increased wear on the ball joints. To do this, you need to turn the steering wheel from one side to the other. If the wheels do not respond when the steering wheel is turned 5 degrees from its original position, this indicates severe wear. Here you will need to repair the steering column on a VAZ 2107.
    2. To avoid the need for urgent and rather expensive repairs of the steering gear on a VAZ 2107, it is necessary to change the oil in the worm gear housing.     How to remove the steering wheel on a VAZ 2106 video

    The steering wheel is removed in cases of damage, to replace the contact ring of the horn switch, or to replace the steering shaft. To remove it we need a screwdriver, a 24" socket with an extension.

    First of all, we set the steering wheel in such a way that it corresponds to the straight-line movement of the car. Carefully, using a screwdriver wrapped in a clean cloth, pry and remove the decorative trim of the sound signal. Next, use a marker to apply marks on the steering shaft and steering wheel hub that will determine their relative positions; apply marks only if you are removing the steering wheel not for replacement, but for performing other repair work. Using a 24mm socket and an extension under it, loosen and unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut. Do not unscrew the nut completely

    Due to the fact that the steering wheel sits tightly on the cone, if you unscrew the nut completely, when you further remove the steering wheel, it can suddenly come off and cause injury, so in our case the nut will serve as a limiter. Remove the steering wheel by sharply hitting the wheel rim from below with both hands in the area of ​​the hubs. Now you can unscrew the nut completely and remove the steering wheel.

    Install the new steering wheel and reassemble it in the reverse order of removal.

    If you removed the steering wheel to replace the horn switch, you need to:

    • Unscrew the six screws securing the switch.
    • Remove the two middle bolt grommets and remove the switch.
    • Disconnect the wire from the slip ring.
    • Remove the switch springs (4 pcs).
    • Unscrew the three screws securing the slip ring and remove it.

    Make the necessary repairs. Reassemble in the reverse order of removal. Install the VAZ 2106 steering wheel back onto the car.

    4) Now you will need to unscrew two nuts that strengthen the rods to the bipod of the control gearbox (the bipod is indicated by a blue arrow), but before you start unscrewing them, let’s take a little look at what kind of bipod this is, so here it is on the control gearbox itself (screwed to it with a nut), due to this bipod, the forces that come from the control gearbox to the wheels are transmitted, for example, you turn the control wheel and all the force that comes from it is first supplied to the gearbox itself, then the force goes further and reaches this bipod which in turn moves two rods that are connected to it and thus the wheels spin either to the left or to the right.

    After we have sorted out a little bit with this bipod, we will tell you a few words about where and how both rods are attached to it using nuts, firstly, so that you understand what a rod is, for clarity, one of them is shown in the photo below, reddish arrow, this rod goes into the hole (see photo above and the reddish arrows that indicate the same holes into which both rods enter) and is attached to it at the very top with a nut, so if you want to remove the rod from this hole, what is for you in principle, what will need to be done is if you are going to remove the control gearbox, then first take an extension cord and a socket and on top of the car crawl under the nuts that strengthen both rods and then unscrew them as shown in the small photo below:

    How does an electric booster work?

    The electric power steering on the VAZ-2107 starts to work and creates additional torque, which reduces the force required to turn the wheels. Moreover, it begins to work simultaneously with the driver turning the steering wheel. The device is able to reduce the load required to turn the steering wheel by 5.7 times.

    In other words, if you applied a force of 20 kg before installing the device, then after that only 3.5 kg will be enough for a similar action. Stages of device operation:

    1. Using a torque sensor, it is determined in which direction the driver rotates the steering wheel.
    2. The control unit allows you to read all data related to engine speed and vehicle speed.
    3. Using an electric motor, the propeller shaft of the steering mechanism rotates. As a result, the force required to turn the steering wheel is reduced.

    Using a speed sensor, a normal relationship is ensured between the gain of the device and the intensity of vehicle traffic. If the speed is low, it becomes harder to turn the steering wheel. Therefore, the control unit understands that the gain needs to be increased. Conversely, if you are moving at high speed, then you need to apply less force. Therefore, the electric power steering is not involved in steering.

    The device starts operating 5 seconds after the driver turns on the ignition. If suddenly any breakdown occurs in the electric amplifier, the automatic control system will turn it off, as a result the car will be switched to manual mode. This ensures 100% safety in case the device suddenly breaks down. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about the safety of your life.

    When thinking about modifying the steering, we must not forget that any interventions in this part of the machine are prohibited. Of course, replacing the steering gearbox with a newer modification may not cost anything. But with global changes, it will be impossible to pass a technical inspection. The design of the classics has been well studied; any expert knows it thoroughly. Therefore, it will be impossible to hide this without technical inspection. Nevertheless, for those who decide to do tuning at their own risk, we can advise several directions for creativity.

    So, the most common thing is installing a steering column from a more modern VAZ model. The procedure is extremely labor-intensive, but as a result, the VAZ 2105 column gains the ability to adjust in height. For those who like to travel far and have a non-standard build, this is a very convenient option. The new VAZ 2105 column with height adjustment may only require an additional adapter. Such adapters are available in tuning stores.

    The main drawback that the vast majority of owners of the “five” would like to eliminate is the heavy steering. It is very difficult and almost impossible to install power steering on a VAZ, but electric power steering is easy. Special kits are sold, even the VAZ 2105 column does not need modification. But electric amplifiers are not always reliable. There are known cases when, after their failure, the car began to be thrown into the oncoming lane, and even at full speed. Therefore, the installation is not very justified. And if you take the ESD from a foreign car, then you may have to install another steering gear and redo half of the car. You may also need to replace the VAZ 2105 steering shaft.

    A well-lubricated, adjusted and serviceable steering mechanism of the “five” practically does not require additional strengthening or modifications. But if you want, you can modify it too. It is also possible to legitimize the alteration if you pass tests and receive a certificate from a research institute.

    Hello, friends and brothers in spirit! So I decided to write, maybe it will be useful to someone. So, the crux of the problem: there is a lot of play in the steering wheel. Very big.

    Tightening the adjusting screw 2101-3401018 no longer removes the play, but makes the steering wheel rotate tighter. This means that you need to adjust the clearance in the worm bearing 2101-3401129 by removing the adjusting shims 2101-3401055(-6) from under the lower cover of the steering gear housing. To do this: 1) I loosened the adjusting screw on the top cover of the gearbox (first unscrewed the locknut, and then the screw);

    2) unscrewed one lower bolt securing the lower cover of the mechanism housing, waited until the oil flowed out and unscrewed the other three bolts ATTENTION! the second lower bolt, which is near the spar, can be unscrewed without removing the steering mechanism, just very laboriously and with an open-end wrench.

    3) then remove the cap and gaskets, which are there. In my case, spacers with a nominal value of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 mm were installed, i.e. by a total of 1.1 mm. Also, with such gaskets it was possible to adjust the gap in 0.1 mm increments - I was lucky, because... Some people may have fewer of these pads. The adjustment method is as follows: we remove the 0.1 mm gasket, put the rest together with the cover and gradually tighten it by 3 bolts (we don’t touch the one that’s ugly. We tighten it and try to rotate the steering wheel - in the play it should rotate almost effortlessly, easily. Then we tighten the adjusting screw on the top cover, constantly rocking the steering wheel until either the play becomes acceptable, or until the steering wheel becomes difficult to rotate. If we get to the point of tightness, and the play is still large, then repeat steps 1-3 again. Set to 0 ,1 into place and throw out 0.2 mm, assemble and adjust again. I had to remove exactly 0.2 mm, the play became much smaller, maybe a little more than on the Vitara. It’s just that when I removed 0.3 mm, When the cover was tightened, the steering wheel rotated in the play with force, not freely. At the end, tighten the hemorrhoid bolt of the bottom cover, lock the adjusting screw on the top cover, unscrew the plug 14324111 and fill in a check (250 g.) of transmission oil. Then tighten the plug and drive for your pleasure. ))

    Replacing a steering column is a rather difficult task, but it can be done independently if you have some experience in car repair. You will need the following tools:

    • Wrenches 17 (socket and open-end).
    • Socket heads for 17 and 30.
    • Handle with ratchet.
    • Mount.
    • Hammer.

    The column is removed in the following order:

    1. Disconnect the battery.
    2. Remove the steering wheel.
    3. Remove the steering shaft housing.
    4. Remove the wire block from the ignition switch.

    9. Unscrew the 3 bolts securing the column to the body. The procedure is not easy - the distance between the parts and the body is too small, the bolts are difficult to keep from turning. A handle with a ratchet will come in handy here, which will speed up the process.
    10. Remove the column from the shaft. To do this, you need to knock the column off the tie rod splines using a pry bar. This must be done in jerks, resting your feet on the body.
    11. Unscrew and remove the shaft seal installed at the bottom of the column.

    After dismantling the old column, it is necessary to clean the seat from dirt. Before installing a new column, you should check the condition of its hinge joints and needle bearings. If everything is in order, you can begin installation, which is done in the reverse order of removal.

If there is play, then unscrew the nut, tighten the clamping screw a little and tighten the nut again.

    The most important thing is not to pinch the adjusting screw or break the thread. If the screw is tightened too tightly, the steering will be very tight. There is a special standard for steering wheel force - 25 kgf. The force is controlled when the bipod with rods is installed and the fingers are pressed in. The force is checked using a torque wrench. If it is very large, then the adjusting bolt needs to be loosened a little.

    Sometimes adjusting the VAZ gearbox may not give anything. If the mechanism is completely worn out, what can you do? There is no particular point in repairing it, and it will take a lot of time. Therefore, in order not to bother with repairs, the most reasonable solution is to completely replace the VAZ steering gear.     Electric power steering for VAZ 2107: compatibility and equipment

    Electric amplifiers that can be installed on the “seven” are produced by the Aviaagregat plant, located in Makhachkala. The EUR is intended for installation on a VAZ 21214, but the design allows it to be used in the steering of any “classic”. The electric power steering is mounted directly on the steering column of the car.

The gain factor of the electric power steering is 5.7, that is, after installing the electric power steering, instead of a force of up to 20 kg, a force of up to 3.5 kg will be sufficient.

    The amplifier operates using the feedback principle. It looks like this:

    • a torque sensor determines whether the driver is turning the steering wheel and the direction in which the steering wheel rotates on a VAZ 2107;
    • the power steering control module reads data on engine speed, driving speed, ignition key position, processes it according to the programmed program and issues a control signal to the electric motor;
    • The electric motor rotates the steering cardan, easing the driver's efforts.

    The speed sensor ensures that the gain matches the current vehicle speed. At low speeds, the steering gain is lower, making it harder to turn, and when driving at high speeds, less effort is required to turn the steering wheel.

    The electric booster starts working 5 seconds after the car's ignition is turned on.

    If there are signs of a fault with the EUR, the automatic system turns it off, transferring the car to standard manual control mode, which ensures 100% safety in the event of a breakdown.

    How to remove the steering wheel?

    Dismantling the steering wheel on VAZ 2114 and 2115 is carried out using the same method. However, remember that according to the Code of Administrative Offenses, replacing a steering wheel with a steering wheel different from the original is considered illegal modification of the steering structure and vehicle control system. Such tuning falls under Part 2 of Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses on driving a vehicle in the presence of malfunctions or conditions under which its operation is prohibited.     1. Remove the ignition key from the lock.
    2. Turn the steering wheel so that the system locking the steering shaft is activated. Your steering wheel is now locked in a straight position.
    3. In order to subsequently correctly install the new part while maintaining control accuracy, apply a mark to the steering wheel with a pencil. Place a similar mark on the dashboard right next to it.
    4. Using a straight screwdriver, pry the cover with the Lada inscription on the steering wheel and remove it. This element is attached using ordinary plastic clips, so removing it is not difficult. However, due to the thin plastic, the part breaks easily. If you plan to continue using your old steering wheel, be careful.
    5. Under the trim you will see two screws. They hold the steering wheel cover. Unscrew them using a Phillips screwdriver and then remove the cover.
    6. In the central part of the structure you will see a large nut. It should be unscrewed using a 24 mm socket.
    7. The steering wheel no longer holds anything. To remove it, grab the steering wheel with both hands and pull each side in turn. There's no point in trying. If the part has not been dismantled before, it will be quite difficult to move. Do not try to remove the part with one jerk: you may accidentally injure yourself.
    8. If attempts to remove the steering wheel using the method described in point 7 are unsuccessful, use a small hammer and drift. In addition to additional tools, you will need an assistant. One person from the pair should pull the steering wheel, and the second should hit the drift attached to the end of the steering shaft with a hammer.

    Experts recommend not turning off the central nut completely, as it can protect you from serious injury in the event of a sudden break of the steering wheel. Make several turns while performing step 6, and when the part comes off the steering shaft, unscrew it completely by hand.

    Adjusting the VAZ gearbox

    Adjustment of the steering gear is carried out to get rid of play in the steering wheel, as well as all kinds of discrepancies when it rotates with the position of the wheels. The car wheels must first be aligned.

    To adjust the steering gear, you need to unscrew the lock nut on its cover from above and loosen the special adjusting screw. Ask your partner to sit behind the wheel and rotate the steering wheel in different directions with energetic, but not wide movements, while you gradually tighten the adjusting screw. As soon as the steering wheel begins to rotate tightly and the wheels move with the slightest movement, the locknut is tightened.

    This completes the adjustment of the steering gear. As you can see, this procedure is not long at all and can be performed with just a 19-mm wrench and a regular flat-head screwdriver.

    How to remove an old steering wheel

    Here are instructions for dismantling the old-style steering wheel. It's best to have a friend help you do the job and watch a video on how to dismantle the part.

    1. Disconnect the battery by removing the wires from the negative terminal and ground.
    2. Use a short Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws on the back of the wheel. There are only four of them.
    3. Remove the panel along with the contact plate and fasteners. In this case, you need to disconnect the signal power wire.
    4. Hold the steering wheel to prevent it from turning. Loosen the nut holding it in place, but do not unscrew it completely.
    5. Have an assistant sit in the driver's seat and lightly pull the steering wheel in the direction it is removed. Give the shaft several blows with a hammer (sometimes just one is enough). After this, the steering wheel can be easily removed.
    6. There was a nut left on the rod, which you did not completely unscrew so that the steering wheel would not come off. Now you can permanently remove it.

    If you removed the steering wheel to replace the bearing, then disassembly is not complete. You will have to remove the trim and bracket to get to it. Watch the video instructions to make sure everything is done correctly.

    Working with the new steering wheel is easier. To do this, you will have to remove the top decorative trim with the factory logo to gain access to the nut. To replace a worn bearing, you will also have to remove the remaining trim and bracket.

    A pendulum arm or simply a pendulum is a part that connects the steering rods and the steering gearbox. The product is located under the hood symmetrically to the steering gear and is mounted on the right side member.

    For dismantling you will need:

    • a set of open-end or ring wrenches;
    • ball pin remover.

    We perform the procedure in the following sequence:

    1. Remove the right front wheel.
    2. We unscrew the fastening of the rod fingers to the pendulum lever.

    Pendulum repair

    Repair of the unit comes down to replacing bushings or bearings (depending on the design).

    • new bushings;
    • lubricant "Litol-24".

    Troubleshooting and assembly

    After disassembling the pendulum, we check the condition of all parts. There should be no defects on the axle and lever (traces of wear, deformation). With high mileage of the car, bushings are subject to wear. Therefore, they have to be replaced with new ones. There should be no cracks or other damage on the bracket. The pendulum is assembled in the reverse order, with Litol-24 applied to the pendulum axis and the hole under it. The adjusting nut should be tightened so that the bipod rotates when a force of 1-2 kg is applied to its end. A dynamometer is used to determine the force.

    Replacing bearings

    With high mileage of the car, the bearings in the pendulum begin to bite and jam, which requires their replacement. The tools you will need are the same as in the previous case, only instead of bushings you need bearings. Repair consists of the following steps:

The installation procedure is quite complex, like the design of the system itself, and the car owner will also have to periodically maintain the system. As practice and prices on the automotive market show, there is no point in installing such a unit, since its cost is almost half the price of a used 2107.
    2. A cheaper and more suitable option for the “seven” is an electric booster. In practice, this unit allows you to cope well with the load placed on it, especially since its installation is simpler. In fact, the electric power steering works on the “seven” almost as efficiently as the hydraulic booster. It should be noted that the main advantage of such a system is the absence of the need for regular maintenance. The EUR on a VAZ is connected to the on-board network, since its operation requires 12-volt voltage.

    The base engine has a timing belt, and the pistons have recesses for valves, due to which the volume of the combustion chamber is increased.

    To increase engine thrust, you need to grind the heads and install pistons without recesses. This will reduce fuel consumption, but there is a danger that the valves may become unusable.

    You can remove the steering wheel in a VAZ-2107 yourself, but in order for the process to be completed correctly, you need to do it step by step:

    1. The battery lock must be done first to prevent short circuit. To do this, it will be enough to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
    2. Using a small screwdriver, you need to pry off the Lada logo, which adorns the middle of the steering wheel. This logo is not only a decoration of the steering wheel, but also an original plug that covers the fastening element.
    3. After the plug is removed, you can see a 24-size nut inside, which must be unscrewed. Before unscrewing, you need to set the steering wheel to a position in which the wheels of the car will “look” directly from the body.
    4. A size 24 socket must be inserted into the extension so that it is convenient to put the tool on the fixing nut. Next, you need to insert such a device into the so-called knob and try to turn the latch with a sharp counterclockwise movement. In this case, you should hold the steering wheel with your knees so that the structure does not turn when unscrewing the lock. If the nut does not come off the first time, you need to repeat the whole process again, but experts do not recommend completely unscrewing the lock. This is explained by the fact that the steering wheel is quite firmly attached to the shaft, and if it is removed with a sharp jerk, the structure can hit a person hard in the chest.
    5. Once you feel that the fastener has become loose, you need to start swinging the steering wheel in different directions. You can completely remove the steering wheel from the shaft after you hear a peculiar click. This will indicate that the steering wheel is starting to hit the nut, so the clamp can be completely unscrewed without fear.

    Failure of the steering mechanism

    When the gearbox finally fails, the ability to drive the vehicle is completely or significantly lost. How to timely determine the “quick end” of the steering mechanism of a VAZ 2106 car, so as not to encounter this at the most inopportune moment? There are several “warning lights” that indicate that the mechanism in question needs replacement.

This may become a basis for refusing to issue a document confirming the completion of a mandatory technical inspection.

    To pass a technical inspection in accordance with the law, you need to find an official letter from the manufacturer about the compliance of this EUR model with the requirements for installation on a VAZ 2107. This letter (copy) must be taken with you when undergoing vehicle inspection.

    Also, for maintenance, a document is required confirming the installation of the EUR at a VAZ-certified car service center.

    If these two documents are available, the inspection station employees do not have the right to refuse to issue a certificate. In a conflict situation, you should request a written refusal indicating the reasons.
