Serial production of Lada XRAY began on December 15, 2015. More than 3 years have passed since that moment, and the crash test results of the model have still not been published anywhere. In this regard, the Lada.online website decided to collect all the necessary information to show how reliable and safe the crossover body is.
Damage sustained by a car during a crash test
The results of this Lada X-Ray crash test are as follows:
- The hood and front portion of the left fender were crumpled;
- Both headlights were damaged (the mounting lugs on the right one came off);
- The wing moved back, “driving” onto the A-pillar and blocking the driver’s door;
- The hood was also blocked due to the displacement of the wing (to open it, it is necessary to reach the left curtain through the gap formed as a result of the deformation of the hood and loosen the fastening bolts. After this, the hood can be moved forward and removed from under the edge of the wing);
- The transverse beam and the longitudinal spar at the place where this beam is attached were deformed;
- The bumper and radiator grille received cracks, and the radiator moved back to the battery area;
- The upper cross member on the left was severely deformed;
A stronger impact would damage the transmission control unit and power steering reservoir, as they are located on the left behind the cross member. The radiator would most likely have been holed, although it had no leaks after the test. In general, the Lada X-Ray will have to undergo a lot of repairs in the event of a collision at such a low speed. To restore the car to its original appearance, you can contact the AvtoVAZ service center or use the services of professional service stations.
Optics
A serious drawback of equipping the Lada XRay with optics is the lensless block headlights, although they are already divided into low and high beam.
The fog lights do not have a beveled reflector that allows illumination of the roadside, and are installed too deep in the bumper sockets - dirt and snow from the road accumulate in these sockets along the way, and weak fog lamps (not LED) aggravate the poor lighting situation.
Attempts to independently adjust these headlights do not improve the situation.
The red fog lamp, installed in the center of the lower part of the rear bumper, due to the aerodynamic features of the Lada X-Ray, is covered in a layer of snow from the road in winter, and the engine exhaust only aggravates the situation.
Repair at the service center. Price
The service center usually replaces all damaged elements. And this, in turn, affects the cost of repairs, as well as time, because you often have to wait for the delivery of spare parts. From the damage listed above, you can understand which elements will need to be replaced. We will immediately indicate the cost of each part. So, to restore a car you will need:
- Hood ($185-210);
- Headlights 2 pcs. ($625-710);
- Left wing ($75-90);
- Cross beam ($210-250);
- Upper crossbar ($150-175);
- Front spar ($170-$190);
- Bumper ($165-280);
- Radiator grille ($20-25).
In general, you will have to spend from $1,600 to $1,930 on spare parts (it all depends on the suppliers). You will also have to pay the service for restoration - replacing damaged elements, editing some of them, painting work. The total cost of the work will cost about $850. In total, restoring a Lada X-Ray to its original condition in the event of such a minor collision will cost $2,450-$2,780 in service. And this is with the price of the car itself being $10,380-$13,850. That is, for restoration you will have to pay almost a quarter of the cost of the crossover.
Technical characteristics of Lada XRay Crossover
The car is designed for use in difficult road conditions, it has good dynamics and excellent handling. The crossover's increased ground clearance and energy-intensive suspension provide a fairly high level of cross-country ability. The vehicle is characterized by maneuverability due to the use of an engine subframe and gas-filled shock absorbers.
Particular attention is paid to safety issues; a number of active systems are installed on the car:
- ESC - directional stability.
- ABS - anti-lock braking system.
- BAS - Brake Assist.
- TCS - traction control.
- EBD - brake force distribution.
The LADA XRAY crossover is equipped with airbags for the driver and front passenger. This, coupled with belts equipped with a pretensioner, allows you to avoid injuries during emergency braking or an accident. The rear doors are equipped with locking mechanisms, and the seats are equipped with ISOFIX systems for installing child seats.
The hatchback is equipped with an automatic or manual transmission. The five-speed robotic gearbox combines the advantages of an automatic transmission and a manual transmission. Under normal conditions, gear shifting occurs without human intervention; in difficult situations, the driver takes control of its operation. On the one hand, this allows you to save the resource of the power unit, on the other hand, it provides the ability to get out of snowdrifts and puddles.
The machine is equipped with two types of gasoline engines that comply with Euro 5 environmental standards and have the following characteristics:
- Working volume: 1596 and 1774 cm3.
- Maximum power: 106 and 122 hp. With.
- Torque: 148 and 170 Nm.
On machines with a more powerful engine, it is possible to install both mechanical and automated transmissions. The 106-horsepower engine is mounted exclusively on manual gearboxes.
The 1.8 liter 5MT version of the model has the best dynamic performance, capable of reaching speeds of up to 185 km/h, and will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. At the same time, the car can run on 92 or 95 gasoline and consumes no more than 7.2 l/100 km in the combined cycle.
Cost of restoration at a service station
Repairing a Lada X-Ray at a service station will cost less. This is due to the fact that such services do not always replace damaged elements, because some of them can be restored. For example, why buy a right headlight if you can glue the “ears” of the mount back. Also, with the help of straightening, it is quite possible to restore the geometry of the cross member, beam, front part of the spar, and return the radiator to its place. And this significantly reduces costs. Note that some craftsmen, using special equipment and tools for straightening (a slipway, a spotter, a reverse hammer, etc.), can also restore external elements that have been damaged - the hood, the wing.
Lada XRAY
XRAY appeared in serial form last December. Even then, criticism began to pour in that the appearance of the car had little in common with the prototype shown earlier. Where is the lightness and swiftness of the image? She doesn't exist. However, compared to the donor Renault Sandero Stepway, the domestic crossover looks very good. Red suits him especially well.
Initially, the salon makes an extremely positive impression. There is an easy-to-grip multifunctional steering wheel, climate control with a display, and tasteful seat upholstery. But, after sitting, you understand that Xray has room to grow: the chairs borrowed from Sandero are uncomfortable (West’s “furniture” is much better), there is nowhere to attach a smartphone, and it wouldn’t hurt to build a makeup mirror into both visors.
But visibility is good - you can see everything from the driver’s seat. I will only criticize the image from the rear view camera: the monitor has a fair amount of glare even in low light. But advanced navigation, which can guide you along the route taking into account traffic jams, does not allow you to abandon the multimedia system. And sometimes it does this no worse than the popular and free smartphone application “Yandex.Navigator”!
Salon
The interior of the Lada X-Ray is a bit cramped for a crossover, especially in the rear. The comfortable seats are decorated with a high-quality, non-staining and pleasant-to-touch fabric, but even moving the front seats not completely back makes it uncomfortable for the passengers sitting behind them.
Moreover, there is no light above the rear passengers, and there is nowhere for them to put drinks - there is only one cup holder for 3 seats, and the pockets in the backs of the front seats are of small capacity.
Plastic interior trim - door cards, front panel look attractive, but are very hard to the touch and noisy on contact.
The upholstery material is low-quality carpet, not dense enough, and rubber mats for this model are not cheap - 3 thousand rubles.
In the first batches of Lada XRay that came off the AvtoVAZ assembly line, the backlighting of the instruments on the control panel was turned on manually; after modification by the manufacturer, the instruments are constantly illuminated, but there is still no indication of the coolant temperature.
There is no reach adjustment for the steering wheel, only height adjustment.
The location of the window lifters is unfortunate - you have to use them with your hand bent backwards.
The width of the A-pillar trim covers impairs visibility from the driver's seat; hidden areas could be smaller.
The noise insulation of the wheel arches leaves much to be desired - every pebble can be heard from under the wheel.
The display size of the standard head unit is large, but its information content is low - at a time, not counting the amount of fuel in the tank, only one parameter is displayed.

But, as the classic said, young men have hopes. So mine didn’t come true. The potential of the engine is ruined by the obstinate automatic manual transmission (AMT): hesitations, dives when switching... Compared to the smooth and predictable operation of hydromechanical automatic transmissions, the AMT transmission seems like a fiend. Even I, a calm driver, was now and then furious with these delays and jerks. I also didn’t like that the car didn’t move after standing and releasing the brake pedal. XRAY will only roll in response to pressing the accelerator. It's incredibly inconvenient in traffic jams!
Lada XRAY
The smoothness of the ride was also disappointing. The Lada regularly picks up all the little things on the road and bounces on bumps with a larger caliber. But there are no complaints about the energy consumption of the suspension - it does not lead to breakdowns. But where the beating is felt is on the steering wheel. If you drive for five minutes on broken asphalt, you will be completely exhausted. And it would be nice if the reward for this shaking was precise controllability - but it’s not. When cornering, the XRAY is unsophisticated; it takes turns reluctantly and does not provide informative feedback.
Lada XRAY
But off the asphalt, the XRAY moves quite confidently - good geometric cross-country ability (minimum ground clearance is 195 mm!) and good engine thrust at low speeds help. By the way, there was also a slope retention system. The test car is from the first batch - this means that you cannot turn off ESP - this function was not enough in the mud. However, since this fall, Tolyatti residents have made a number of improvements to the Ixray design, including adding an ESP deactivation button. Such a prompt response to customer wishes can only be welcomed.
