How does the Kalina gear selection system work?

In the second generation Kalina, changes were made to the transmission. The rods were replaced with cables. This increased the reliability of the design and eliminated the “soreness” of the first version - the constant feeling of vibration on the shift lever.

The lever falls due to the breakdown of the support on which it is located. This is a plastic platform on which the hinge is installed. The gear shift lever is inserted into a hinge, which is secured in a rubber clip. Over time, the rubber fasteners holding the hinge in the support break and the lever falls down.

Frequent failure of the clip is influenced by constant loads when changing gears and the driver’s habit of keeping his hand on the lever.

So, first you need to lift up the lever casing, and then unscrew the fastening nut, which is already shown in the photo below almost completed:

So, the reason for the rattling is that when connecting this entire structure, a small gap appears between the parts, which is the source of strong vibration.

To achieve a smaller gap, it is necessary to slightly grind off the metal bushing, which prevents these washers from being compressed more tightly. I would like to warn you that you need to grind very carefully and very little, literally 1 mm. If you overdo it, then the lever will move with very great effort.

I decided to update an existing article that was written more than a year ago. In that case, the rattling of the gearshift lever was not particularly strong and was eliminated quite simply, which will be written about at the very bottom.

In the meantime, I want to give a short instruction on how to eliminate lever rattling on Kalina. For this I needed the following accessories:

1. First of all, lift the gear shift cover.

2. Using a wrench set to “13”, unscrew the nut and remove the bolt.

3. Disconnect the rod with the lever.

4. Remove the bushing.

6. Using a ruler, measure 1-3 mm from the edge of the sleeve and draw a line.

7. Wrap electrical tape around the sleeve along the line and begin grinding off the excess.

8. You can remove excess using a grinder or sandpaper, or, as a last resort, using a powerful file.

9. Upon completion, install the bushing in place and assemble everything in the reverse order. Before assembly, be sure to put lubricant where it is needed.

The rattling of the gearbox handle of a VAZ 2110 car is not such a rare occurrence. There are several ways to fix this problem.

As is already known, to eliminate any problem, it is necessary, first, to establish the cause of its occurrence. There can be many reasons for the rattling of the VVAZ 2110 gearbox lever.

For example, rattling may appear due to the installation of a backlash-free gearshift lever from LADAKalina, since in the absence of play, all vibration from the gearbox goes directly to the gearbox lever in the VAZ 2110 interior (in the photo below: on the left is a backlash from a VAZ 2110, on the right is backstage without play from LADAKalina).

Another reason that leads to rattling of the gearshift knob may be wear of the gearbox and engine mounts, as well as other parts responsible for damping vibration of the gearbox and engine.

It is worth starting to eliminate gearbox lever chatter by replacing the gearbox lever ball joint (produced from the bottom of the car) or the gearbox lever repair kit (carried out from inside the car). This gives a small effect, but it is best to start with this.

Usually, drivers of a VAZ 2110 car solve the problem of gearbox lever rattling by simply pressing the gearshift knob and fixing it with hand, so we will direct the first method in this direction. It consists of installing a locking spring for the gearshift lever.

Characteristics of all types of Lada Granta gearboxes

The first manual transmission of this sedan and liftback class model received the index 2180. It was soon replaced by a modernized cable-driven gearbox, which is indexed as 2181. It is installed starting with the “standard” configuration.

The difference between these two checkpoints is obvious. The first and most important thing is to use, instead of rigid rods that increase vibration on the body and rocker, more flexible cables from the Japanese manufacturer Atsumitec. In addition, gearbox 2180 differed from 2181 in other parameters.

  1. The 2181 has cone-shaped synchronizers, which reduces the impact on the gear lever when setting 1st or 2nd speed.

  6. Instead of mineral gear oil, semi-synthetic oil was used from the factory, and the oil volume was reduced to 2.2 liters.

Structurally, the gearbox has become not only more reliable, but also more comfortable for the driver. Vibrations to the gearshift lever and the body as a whole have decreased significantly. The speeds began to turn on clearly and without delay. At the same time, the modernization of the gearbox on the Lada Granta and Kalina 2 entailed an average increase in price by 5,000 rubles. According to experts, the main difference between the updated transmission is not so much in reliability, but in the quality of gear selection.

What is characteristic is that the new editions of the Lada Priora did not receive a cable gearbox; this car is still equipped with an outdated VAZ 2180 with rigid rods.

Features of a robotic gearbox

In addition to the updated mechanics, the Lada Granta since 2015, starting with the “luxury” configuration, can be equipped with a robotic gearbox. The new transmission will be available in “standard” and “luxury” variations. According to the engineers, this device should completely eliminate the negative impact of the human factor, in which various errors are made.

Granta became the first car of the VAZ family to receive a robotic transmission option. The main manufacturer was the Japanese company Jatco, known in its field for the development and production of robotic, automatic transmissions and CVTs. They began installing a 4-speed gearbox, proven over the years, on the Grant. Not the most modern, but reliable.

Features of automatic transmission

The period of adaptation of the robot and the release of the first pilot versions of Granta on the machine lasted quite a long time. During this time, the symbiosis of domestic and Japanese developments was subjected to numerous calibrations. The modernization included about 30 modifications, and engineers from Austria were involved in the process. Only after this did the automatic transmission go into production.

Experts even took into account ergonomic issues: the hand fits comfortably on the gear shift lever. The selection of the appropriate modes is indicated on the selector; the specified mode is also duplicated on the BC screen. The only drawback revealed during operation is the unreliable fixation of the lever in the selected mode.

The gearbox operates in several modes. First and second gears are fixed. There is an overdrive button, thanks to which the automatic transmission will not switch to fourth speed. This mode is relevant when overtaking on the highway. Fixed first two gears are used for off-road driving or long uphill climbs. In winter, the transmission will not engage in higher 3rd and 4th gears until the oil warms up to 15 and 60 degrees, respectively.

A few simple ways to temporarily fix the problem

Temporary measures include installing plastic washers on the gearshift lever axle. This is a fairly reliable method. To do this, you will need soft plastic (it can be successfully replaced by a jar lid) and tools: 10 and 13 mm wrenches, scissors, a screwdriver and a file.

The first step is to remove the gearshift knob cover. To do this, just lift it. The gearshift knob remains in place. After this, you need to unscrew the nut (its size is 13 mm). In this case, you should remember one rule: the tighter this nut is subsequently tightened, the harder it will be to shift the gear knob on Kalina.

After this step you will need a Phillips screwdriver. Use it to unscrew the screw. Then two 10 mm nuts are unscrewed. Release the bolt, bushings and nuts. Lubricate everything with a special lubricant, for example lithol.

A washer is cut out of plastic or a plastic cover, which must be installed on the gearbox lever axis. This is not an easy task, since the gap is small. Rubber rings are put on the axle on both sides of the bushing. To make the process easier, you can lubricate them a little. The clamped axle will stop rattling for a long time. This simple repair will even help smooth out gear shifting slightly.

After such a DIY repair, the cap should fit tightly. If the gearshift lever is still dangling, then you should apply another circle of electrical tape and put on the cover. Sometimes the cause of an unpleasant sound is poorly tightened nuts.

This problem can be easily detected by removing the cover of the device. In this case, it is enough to tighten the nuts all the way so that the noise disappears. Upon completion of the work, you need to accelerate the vehicle and release the gas pedal.

If the mechanism no longer hums, then the gearbox repair is complete.

If the cause of the problem is the size of the metal sleeve

If, after manipulating with electrical tape, the problem was not eliminated, then, most likely, the noise is explained by the peculiarities of attaching the shift lever to the rod. It is precisely this kind of car flaw that Lada Kalina owners most often encounter. However, you can fix this problem yourself. This work will take a minimum of time, and no special knowledge is required.

Unlike its predecessor, the new gearbox has received a lot of innovations. This box was the first for AvtoVAZ to undergo computer modeling; a similar approach to production and engineering made it possible to optimize the design and make it more reliable. The oil sump of the new gearbox has changed from 3.3 liters to 2.2 liters and the oil used is not outdated “mineral water”, but good “semi-synthetic” whose service life is designed for the entire life of the car, namely 5 years or 200 thousand kilometers .

But, undoubtedly, the most important and significant change was the introduction of gear shift cables instead of metal rods. This solution made it possible to completely remove vibration from the gearshift lever, qualitatively increase the clarity of gear engagement and their selectivity, and reduce the lever strokes.

The filling of the new box has also changed. The gear part, namely the primary and secondary shafts, remained unchanged; new multi-cone synchronizers were introduced in first and second gears. Unlike classic synchronizers, the new type of synchronizers are much more reliable, and since, according to statistics, the first and second gears are the most loaded, this solution made it possible to increase the reliability parameter of the new unit. Also, synchronizers of this design simplify gear shifting, making it even smoother. In addition, the car plant’s plans include installing this gearbox on more powerful engines, which means a clutch with a larger diameter is required. Unlike its predecessor, the new clutch has a size of 215mm (approx. It was 200mm), this entailed changing the clutch housing and relocating the starter.

The next change will be especially noticeable at subzero temperatures. In old-type boxes, the gear selection mechanism was located at the bottom and was in oil. When the temperature dropped below zero, the oil thickened and engaging gears until the oil warmed up was difficult. In the new model gearbox, the gear selection mechanism is a separate module located outside the gearbox - this solution made it possible to get rid of the problem of difficult shifts in cold weather during the first kilometers of the journey, and also in the future greatly simplifies the process of repairing and servicing the gearbox. There is protection against erroneous engagement of reverse gear, which can only be engaged in neutral.

Through an integrated approach to the development of a new gearbox, engineers managed to achieve a level of gearbox operation no worse than that of competitors in the price segment. AvtoVAZ plans to introduce multi-cone synchronizers in third gear, as well as switch to a hydraulic clutch drive.

Then you need to eliminate the play between the bushings and the gearbox lever (they are glued together using sealant). You need to remember how to remove all the components so that you can assemble everything later without problems.

The next step is to cut a strip from any aluminum can (from some kind of drink). Wrap the sleeve with this strip, making sure that the edges of the strip and the sleeve meet. Elimination of axial clearance is done as follows: cut a washer from the same can and insert it between the bushing, which was glued to the sealant, and the ring. Lubricate everything with a special lubricant and assemble it into the original structure that was on Kalina before disassembly.

Coat the cut strip and washer with the same lubricant. Put everything together and tighten the nut. At the same time, do not make such efforts that they could break the thread. If you have a locknut on hand, use it. This will help avoid unscrewing due to possible vibration. The renovation can be considered complete.

The bushing with the foil strip fits into place without any gaps, but there is no interference either. If everything is done correctly, then the gearshift lever should move the same way as it did before the procedure, that is, shifting gears in Kalina should not become harder. The final stage can be to check all the actions taken. Start the car, drive, shifting between first or second gear, then check the others.

After testing the car a little, we can draw conclusions: is it noisy in the cabin or not? If everything is done correctly, then the noise is eliminated.

Often after use for 2 years, dull knocks appear from the doors, especially those that open frequently. Most likely the reason for this is the weakening of the hinge axis, beyond which the bolt protrudes in the viburnum. Checking for the presence of play in the hinges is simple, you need to open the door and shake it up and down, if there are small knocks and noticeable play, then the problem is in the bolts. The bottom bolts are the ones that loosen the most, but you should definitely check the top ones as well.

To solve this problem, you only need a 13mm wrench, you need to turn the bolts clockwise, the efforts are strong, but without fanaticism. If you are afraid of breaking the bolt, it is better to first unscrew it slightly counterclockwise.

Until 2008, old bolts were installed on viburnums, which had an asterisk instead of the usual 13 head. If tightening the bolts does not help eliminate the backlash, then we buy bolts of a new modification with a cone-shaped working area and grooves for lubrication. The picture on the left shows the new type of bolts, and on the right the old one.

When replacing old bolts with new ones, it is better to do one at a time, that is, first we change the upper one, and only then the lower one. The door is not easy. If you don’t have help holding the door, you can use something to secure the door; my friend got out of the situation like this.

When tightening new bolts, I advise you to lubricate them with lithol and drip a weak thread locker onto the threads. Good luck.

In order for the gearbox to start working silently, you need to carry out work using a 13mm wrench, pliers and an electric sharpener. First you need to remove the lever casing, then unscrew the fastening nut, remove the bolt, all the washers, and the metal sleeve. The cause of the malfunction in this case is that there is a small gap between the structural elements, in which strong vibration occurs when the gearbox is shifted.

Accordingly, the master’s task is to eliminate the gap. In the design installed on the Lada Kalina, the washers are not compressed tightly enough due to the oversized metal sleeve. Therefore, when the mechanism is disassembled, you need to take the bushing and grind it off slightly (no more than 1 mm). Repairing the gearbox should be done with caution, since if the bushing is ground down too much, the gearbox will shift with great difficulty.

After turning, the bushing should be tightly connected to the washers, forming a single structure. As a result of these manipulations, the lever will begin to move more tightly, but this has its advantages, since it will not make any unnecessary movements. Before putting all the parts of the mechanism into place, they should be generously coated with lubricant. When the structure is assembled, the nuts must be tightened to the maximum.

One of the main problems that arise when performing this work is excessive grinding of the bushing, which may result in the need to replace this element. However, a slight loosening of the nut can save the situation. This will make the lever move less stiffly when changing gears.

There is an alternative way to solve the problem with the Lada Kalina car. It is more complex, but has also proven itself positively. The damper bushings should be glued to the gearshift lever using sealant, and the metal bushing should be wrapped in a circle in aluminum tape (this can be cut from a regular drinks can) and installed in its proper place. You also need to cut a washer out of aluminum and insert it between the metal ring and the damper bushing. Before assembly, all parts should be treated with lubricant.

When the gearbox repair is completed, it is necessary to test the mechanism. First you need to accelerate the car, and then at a speed of about 70 km/h and in third gear, release the gas pedal. If no extraneous sounds or vibrations occur, then the problem has been resolved.

The manual transmission installed on the Granta has a long history; in fact, it is the same 5-speed. gearbox, like the VAZ-2108, but repeatedly subject to serious modernization.

From the beginning of Granta's production, the car was equipped with a model 2180 gearbox, with a shift rod, with the gear selection mechanism located at the bottom (inside the body), the same transmission was installed on the first generation Lada Kalina.

A modernized gearbox with index 2181 appeared in 2012, and in the new transmission:

  • The gear shift rod was replaced with two cables;
  • the speed selection mechanism was moved upward, it began to be located outside the housing, not in oil, as it was before;
  • in 1st-2nd gear a multi-cone synchronizer appeared;
  • The clutch housing has been changed; only 2.2 liters of transmission oil are now poured into the box itself, and not 3.3 liters as before.

The use of cables instead of a rod reduced the level of vibration in the body, and in general, speeds began to be switched more clearly, without “searching” for the desired gear.

But this transmission had one characteristic problem - the 2181 gearbox of the first editions emitted a noticeable howl when the car was moving.

There were a lot of complaints from car owners, so AvtoVAZ decided to refine the unit, improving the technology for processing gears and shafts, and in the summer of 2014, Granta with a quieter manual transmission began to roll off the car plant’s assembly line.
