Absolutely any car gadgets today are powered by the energy produced by the cigarette lighter - a video recorder, a GPS navigator, a car compressor, and even a mobile phone. All this requires energy, which can be obtained using a cigarette lighter. Therefore, when this part in a car fails, all the gadgets with which it is equipped automatically stop working.
Car cigarette lighter
The socket of this device can be used to connect non-standard equipment:
- phone chargers;
- laptops (tablets);
- compressors;
- vacuum cleaners;
- and so on.
In general, any household appliance that has a special adapter for connecting to the cigarette lighter socket.
The main disadvantage of this gadget is its unreliability in providing a long-term electrical connection. And also, switching high currents. The design features of the socket and the car cigarette lighter itself do not allow them to be kept in close contact with each other. As a result, due to vibrations of the car while driving, frequent disconnection (connection) of contacts occurs. Which leads to sparking of connections and in some cases can cause a short circuit. The same applies to adapter devices for connecting auxiliary household appliances.
Fuse diagnostics
To check the fuse, carefully remove it from its seat, connect its leads to the probes of the multimeter and “ring”. If you are using a homemade tester made from a lamp and wires, connect the element being tested to the gap in one of the conductors. Connect the wires to the battery terminals. If the lamp lights up or the tester beeps to notify you that the fuse is intact, you should continue searching for the problem. Otherwise, simply replace the insert.
Never install a fuse with a different rated current, and especially do not use various “bugs”. This will jeopardize the entire on-board circuit of the vehicle. And from a fire safety point of view, this is unacceptable.
The relationship between a car lighter and a radio in VAZ cars
A common problem for all VAZ car models (2114,2115, 2109, 2110, 21099), this is the same voltage supply circuit to the car player, with output to one common fuse, which is additionally responsible for the power supply:
- cabin heater (stove);
- cigarette lighter;
- heated rear window;
- the radio itself.
Thus, a failure as a result of a break, short circuit, etc., in the electrical circuit of any device leads to the shutdown of the rest.
Since the tape recorder is equipped with an additional safety device, coming after the main one, after checking them and replacing them, if necessary, the operation of the head unit, like all the above-mentioned equipment, is restored. If only the cigarette lighter (without the player) resumes operation, the cause of the malfunction should be sought in the car radio itself (which is the topic of a separate article).
Disassembling the center console
Further diagnostics of the device requires its removal. But how to remove the cigarette lighter of a VAZ-2110? Some specialists manage to remove it from the facing panel without dismantling it by picking it out with a screwdriver, but why deform the plastic if it takes no more than five minutes to remove it? Yes, and for this you only need a Phillips screwdriver.
- Unscrew the screws securing the left and right trims of the center console.
- We disconnect the connecting blocks of the cigarette lighter wires and its backlight (it is recommended to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery in advance).
- Push up the front trim (under the handbrake lever). Remove the cover.
- We remove the gear shift knob, and then its cover.
- Unscrew the central screw securing the tunnel lining.
- Move the front seats all the way forward.
- We unscrew the screws for the rear fastening of the upper cladding and dismantle it.
Causes of car cigarette lighter malfunction
Returning to our main topic, namely, why the cigarette lighter and radio do not work on the 2114 and other models, we list the possible causes of malfunctions:
- the safety device has burnt out;
- contact is broken in the fuse block;
- contacts have oxidized or burned due to frequent voltage surges during operation;
- the backlight burnt out;
- short circuit.

I don't claim to be 100% sure, but...
on the cars I drove: VAZ 21011 - 1975. 21099 - 1995 21074 - 2001 21122 - 2002 The cigarette lighter worked and works regardless of the Z.Z. Personally, I don’t like the cigarette lighter, but for those who smoke, it’s more convenient to have one independent from the ignition. The Ministry of Health warned
