Operating rules

If at some point the cigarette lighter stops working, what will happen? All your additional equipment will no longer receive power. As a result, you will be left without a media center, navigator, will not be able to charge your phone, and so on.

There are several important rules that are recommended to be followed when operating your VAZ 2109 equipped with a cigarette lighter.

  1. It is not recommended to connect compressors directly through the cigarette lighter, which many people use today to pump up their tires on the road. It is better to connect it directly through the battery. Such devices consume a lot of energy and create an impressive load on the vehicle's electrical wiring. At some point it may melt or a fuse may blow.
  2. Do not try to insert devices whose connectors are larger than the size of the cigarette lighter into the cigarette lighter socket.
  3. Do not connect metal objects. Also, when connecting the device, do not use equipment that has metal rings on the body. They often fly out, resulting in a short circuit. At best, your battery will quickly run out.

And what's behind it?

Why is a cigarette lighter used in a car?

Nowadays, its nest is increasingly being used for other purposes than its intended purpose. Almost forty years ago, when AvtoVAZ designers conceived the first cars of the Samara family, which included the VAZ 2109, they could not imagine how else this unit would be used.

DVRs had not yet been invented, and the question of where to turn on the recorder was not raised in principle. In the same way, there was no task to connect satellite navigation equipment to the on-board network - there was no such equipment at all. And there was no need to even charge cell phones due to the lack of such in nature. Now it’s all there and is powered by the cigarette lighter.

Such abnormal operation leads to an increase in the load on its nest. This may lead to its failure. Particularly dangerous in this sense is a portable electric compressor, which has become widely used by motorists today. On long and even short trips, drivers often have with them such a compressor, which allows them to drive for quite a long time on a punctured tubeless tire, periodically pumping it up and leaving the issue of repairing the wheel until the tire shop. Care should be taken when making such swaps.

Remember that the cigarette lighter is only designed to light a cigarette, but not to pump up a completely flat tire over and over again. At the very least, for such a swap you should connect the crocodile clips to the battery terminals, and not to the cigarette lighter socket.

How to check the operation of an electrical circuit?

In order to check the operation of the VAZ 2109 unit, it is enough to test each of the circuits with a multimeter.

In carburetor engine variations, this is done extremely simply, since the contacts of the block are completely open. If multiple breaks are found, it will be cheaper and easier to simply replace the entire unit. The new model will also work, and even the 2114 - they use identical ones.

If only one part of the block works, then you will have to look for a broken circuit. The search will make it easier to know the following rules:

  • if the circuit responsible for powering the stove does not work, then you need to look for the faulty element with F4 or F7. The latter is responsible for the operation of the fan, which blows warm air into the cabin;
  • Replacing the cigarette lighter will be required if several circuits do not work at once: F4, F10, block 7;
  • Relay F7 is responsible for the washers, portable lamp holder and rear window wiper;
  • If the fuel pump malfunctions, the “culprit” is the fuse board, which is located on the left side of the steering wheel (inside the car).

These are the faults that drivers most often have to deal with.

Dealing with the fuse box in a VAZ 21099 carburetor is quite simple. The most difficult thing is finding the faulty element. But fixing the problem is not difficult if you have spare fuses available. In the VAZ 21099, unlike the VAZ 2108, they are provided by the manufacturer. Don’t forget to restore them in a timely manner if necessary.

Causes

Practice shows that there are two main reasons for cigarette lighter failure on a VAZ 2109.

CauseYour actions
Fuse burned outYou should look for the fuse inside the mounting block. Depending on the year of manufacture of your nine, the fuse for the cigarette lighter is designated F4 or F10. If it burns out, remove the fuse from the mounting block, replace it with a new one and watch to see if the situation repeats. If it burns out again after a while, this indicates a shortening in the wiring. The peculiarity of this fuse is that it is responsible for several devices connected to it at once. Therefore, check the condition of the remaining elements. Maybe it's because of them that the fuse melts, and not because of the cigarette light
Poor contactIt may be partially damaged or absent completely. Remove the cigarette lighter, check whether the wires are seated properly on the terminals, and whether the device is loose. A visual inspection is good, but it’s better to be more precise. Take a multimeter, turn it into voltmeter mode and check what voltage is between the black and red wires. If the device shows 12 volts, look for the source of the problem in the cigarette socket. If there is no voltage, there is a break in the wiring.

Cigarette lighters are designed for a certain load, exceeding which leads to failure of the unit. When developing the VAZ 2109, engineers at that time could hardly take into account that the socket would be used to connect portable compressors, powerful multimedia centers and other energy-consuming equipment.

Methods for troubleshooting

  • If a blown fuse is detected, it must be removed and replaced. Car enthusiasts often make a common mistake. Visual inspection is not enough to determine the integrity of the fuse. It happens that legs that are oxidized on the sides look completely normal. Before installing a new fuse, it is a good idea to check its legs for strength. Fake, poor quality fuses from unknown manufacturers have easily bendable legs, while high-quality ones are quite resistant to creasing;
  • To check the quality of the cigarette lighter contacts, it is enough to remove it from the socket from the interior. This is done quite simply, no need to disassemble the front panel. By bending the metal latch inwards with a thin screwdriver, you can pull the cigarette lighter body towards you.

In order for the cigarette lighter to serve for a long time, you should not connect energy-intensive devices to the network. The car radio must be powered directly through a battery with a corresponding independent fuse in the circuit. If you keep the cigarette lighter socket clean and make sure the contacts are strong, you can forget about the problem for a long time.

Replacing the fuse

The most common reason why the VAZ 2109 cigarette lighter does not work is the corresponding fuse has blown. This is what should be checked first if the device fails. The fuse box for the Nine is located under the hood in the engine compartment. When you open the hood, you will immediately see this block on the left side of the car near the windshield.

The block cover is stamped with a diagram of the location of the fuses in the block. Typically, the VAZ 2109 cigarette lighter fuse is indicated in the diagram as F4. It has a current limit of 20A. The fuse is conveniently removed from the socket using mounting tweezers stored in a special socket of the block, but if the tweezers are lost over the years of use of your “nine”, you can simply pry the fuse off with a screwdriver. Always have a set of spare fuses of different ratings with you when traveling; avoid using homemade “bugs” - this is dangerous.

Find out whether there was an overload of the power supply circuit or a violation of the standard contact when turning on a particular consumer. Feel the wires leading to the device, according to how the cigarette lighter connection diagram is built: to see if there is overheating or, moreover, melting of the current-carrying wires.

After replacing the fuse, be sure to analyze the reason for its blown.

Instructions for repairing and replacing the mechanism

How to remove and replace a failed cigarette lighter with a new one?

In accordance with the connection diagram, the dismantling and installation procedure looks like this:

  1. First, you need to unscrew two screws located on the right and left of the panel with the radio in the center console. Remove the panel itself while simultaneously disconnecting the control buttons.
  2. Then find the power connector for the cigarette lighter, use the tester to find the plus on it and remove the plug itself. Remember that the color of the wires connected to the device does not always correspond to reality. If the wires are really mixed up, then you need to remove them from the connector; to do this, press the special latch with a screwdriver or an awl. After that, remove them and swap them in order to avoid such a problem later. Bend the latch and install them so that the wires are securely fixed in the seat.
  3. After this, the power wire must be cut if you want to connect a fuse directly to it. This is not necessary, but it is advisable. It would be even better to make a new wiring for the connector, since the existing standard cable is very short. Install a fuse in the electrical circuit and wrap everything with electrical tape so that the device does not fall out.
  4. Then connect the connectors and, using the tester, check if you did everything correctly. You need to make sure that the power and other connections are properly connected.
  5. If the old cigarette lighter was not equipped with a light bulb, you can additionally install one. To do this, you can use a wire to activate the parking lights. Remove the wire from the connected connector, and then connect the power supply circuit of the cigarette lighter bulb to it. The connection must be insulated, then the connector is installed in place.
  6. When these steps are completed, you need to reinstall the cigarette lighter on the previously removed center console panel. It must be inserted from the outside of the panel, where there is a small cavity - a plastic part is installed into it, after which the lamp should be installed and fixed in the grooves. Please note that the lamp itself must be fixed directly in the plastic, and not in the cavity of the device, otherwise this may result in a short circuit.
  7. When the lamp is installed, the device is connected to the connector, and note that you also need to connect the ground. Then the lamp itself is connected. After assembly, you need to check the functionality of the device. If everything is fine, then reinstall the panel and secure it to the console with self-tapping screws. Connect all buttons and connectors to them.

Device and purpose

The operating principle of the device is simple. Inside the metal cartridge there is a thin spiral. When the cigarette lighter is pressed into the working position, current begins to flow through the contacts, exposing the coil to thermal effects. After reaching the maximum value, the thermal relay is activated and the device returns to its original position.

Three wires come to the VAZ 2109 cigarette lighter itself. The connection diagram is implemented as follows.

  1. Red cable. The positive wire goes directly to the cigarette lighter battery. Responsible for heating the element. This section of the circuit is protected by a 20 ampere fuse.
  2. Yellow cable. A constant plus that goes to the lamp. Responsible for lighting the cigarette lighter.
  3. Black cable. Minus. One end is powered to the cigarette lighter body, and the other ends to the car body.

When operating the device on a VAZ, it is important to adhere to several basic rules. It must be remembered that the total power of connected devices is calculated using the formula P=I*A (power=voltage*current). In this case, A = 20 amperes, and the voltage in the car circuit is 12 volts. The maximum power rating should not exceed 240 watts. The cigarette lighter fuse may blow, and the insulating part of the wires may melt.

How to use it correctly

What happens if the cigarette lighter breaks? In this situation, the additional equipment installed on the machine will not be able to receive electricity and, therefore, will stop working.

To prevent this from happening, when using a cigarette lighter, you just need to follow a few fairly simple, but very important rules.

First of all, you should not connect the compressor, which is currently used by many car owners to pump up wheel chambers, directly into the connector, that is, directly. It would be more correct to power it from a battery. The thing is that these types of devices require a lot of voltage to operate and, therefore, create high loads on the wires. As a result, the latter often overheat and even melt. This most often happens on machines where fuses are replaced by jumpers.

Under no circumstances should you try to insert too thick plugs into the socket - they will damage the connector elements, some of which are made of porcelain.
