    A new machine means confidence in quality, reliability and safety during operation. But its functionality and design are also important when choosing. The long-awaited “Viburnum” series of cars was introduced in 2004, and serial production began in 2011. To date, the second version has already been presented, and on its basis the designers have developed Grant's next car. So which is better - the Lada Granta or its predecessors?

    LADA Kalina NFR R1 is a new car from LADA SPORT, prepared in accordance with the technical requirements of the Russian Automobile Federation for cars of the “National” class of the Russian Cup in circuit car racing. In addition to the “ring”, Kalina NFR R1 can participate in the Russian Rally Cup in the 1600N class, track racing (National class), cross-country racing (D2N class), rallycross (D2-Lada class).

    Kalina NFR R1 is an excellent option both for novice racing drivers who want to make their debut in domestic motorsport, and for professionals who have many years of competition behind them.     Lada Granta Sport is an aggressive, dynamic, but not a new car

    The “charged” Granta was produced from 2013 to 2018 . Now AvtoVAZ is promoting Kalina NFR R1 and Vesta Sport , although the past merits and popularity of Grants pushed the domestic manufacturer to restyling the model. It is assumed that the updated cars will be released in the summer of 2022, but in fact there is only equipment that is at least a year old, and the official website remains absolutely silent regarding Granta Sport sales.

    Naturally, the Granta Sport, which went on wide sale, is not a real sports car, but only a good stylization of it . To illustrate: the Granta Sport, which took part in the world touring car championship, had a 320-horsepower engine, and the production model had a 120-horsepower engine. However, a “hot” sedan gives its owner the opportunity to stand out from the crowd of vehicles of the same type, declare his individuality, and implement an active driving style.

    We were able to compare not even two, but all three of their fastest models, and even on the test track. Since we are talking about sports, based on the results of the test drive, we distribute all three “hot” VAZ models to places on the virtual podium. And we start with “bronze”.

    3rd place. LADA Granta Sport

    Only Granta sedans are sporty, this is explained simply. They are assembled in Tolyatti, and the sports department involved in fine-tuning these machines is located there. Liftbacks are assembled in Izhevsk, so they can’t make friends with sports. Although, in my personal opinion, the five-door body has a racing character closer to it. Moreover, I had the opportunity to see such a “Grant” in Izhevsk, but, as I was told, there are only a few individual copies assembled to VIP order.

    You expect a low stance from a “hot” car, but there is nothing like that here. You sit high, upright. The seats have lateral support, but not very pronounced, and the seat cushion is a bit short. But the trimmed steering wheel is nicer to the touch than the standard one.

    The main thing, of course, is the engine. It’s all lies when they say there’s a turbine there. She doesn't exist. There are different camshafts, different firmware of the “brains” (ECU), a different design of the intake system, an exhaust manifold with an increased cross-section of the passage channels. All this together gave the engine an increase to 114 hp. With. power. Plus eight forces relative to the base 106. Probably, if you fill it with 92-grade gasoline, you won’t feel the difference at all. And you need to fill it with 95, it is recommended by the manufacturer.

    During normal driving you won’t feel any crazy “stupidity”. Acceleration is more dynamic compared to the regular version, but this is more due to the change in the final drive gear ratio: 4.3 instead of 3.9. And the box is the same - 5-speed manual. The suspension is stiffer, that’s a fact, and the tires are also low profile – we had standard Pirelli 195/50 R16. But the car doesn’t steer at all in a sporty way, not even once! So go out onto the straight line, rev the engine to high speeds, and only there - near the red zone of the tachometer - do you get your pleasure. 9.5 seconds to 100 km/h.

    2nd place. LADA Kalina Sport

    The “charged” Kalina is much more interesting. It would seem that it’s exactly the same engine, the same 114 horsepower, the same gearbox, the same wheels, equal performance in dynamics and ground clearance. But the feeling is completely different.

    And you can feel it in the corners. The fact is that the Kalina is shorter and lower than the Granta, and its rear overhang is shorter, and the rear track is wider. Just don’t say that these kilograms and centimeters do not give anything. They do, no doubt about it. That was one of the problems in Grant - the long stern! You will feel its absence and the Kalina’s greater desire to follow the steering movements. Here there are already notes of a sporting nature, so “Grant” will move forward. And these are not just my observations. When, during the test drive, the participants were asked to compete in the speed of passing the “snake”, everyone sat down in the Kalina.

    1 place. LADA Kalina NFR

    It's not just about the name. And it’s not that the power of the same engine has been increased to 136 horsepower. It gave only three-tenths of a second in the sprint to 100 km/h (9.2 seconds to “hundred”), since all the changes made the car noticeably heavier.

    It's a matter of feeling. NFR is much tougher. The reason here is in the suspension, especially in the radical change in the front end. That’s why it steers like a real rally car, responding very clearly to steering wheel turns. It is noisier, and its exhaust sound is also serious. And the engine spins up to 6800 rpm, you will feel these “tops”.

    It is brighter both in interior decoration and externally. All these body kits, a hood with “gills”, wide 17th wheels. You can also order 16ths - from the Sport versions, but it is still better to choose larger wheels. Everyone will definitely be looking at this car.

    Lada Kalina NFR or Lada Granta Sport - which is better?

    But only a few know that in the Russian AvtoVAZ model range there are also “heated” versions of civilian versions of cars.

    That is why today we will talk about two domestic “lighters” - Lada Kalina NFR and Lada Granta Sport. And we won’t just talk, but try to find out which car is better.

    The production version of the Lada Granta Sport was shown at the Moscow Motor Show back in 2012.

    Compared to its civilian “brother,” the “sport” version has a more attractive, dynamic appearance. This was achieved through the installation of a different false radiator grille, massive front and rear bumpers, as well as modified sills and huge 16-inch wheels.

    The serial Lada Kalina NFR (the abbreviation stands for “Need for Race”) was shown by the company in the summer of 2014. However, official sales of the new product started only in 2015.

    As with the Granta Sport, the “charged” Kalina has a more aggressive and attractive appearance. The “face” of the car received tinted head optics, a massive front bumper with effectively designed fog lights and an additional air intake in the hood area.

    The profile and rear are distinguished by the presence of sports “skirts”, a small spoiler, a pseudo-diffuser and large 16-inch wheels of a special design. The external dimensions of the hatchback are as follows:

    The hatchback's ground clearance is 40 mm lower compared to the regular Kalina and amounts to 145 mm, which is necessary for greater stability when driving at high speeds.

    Engine, chassis and transmission

    There are many options for choosing engines for all generations of Lada Kalina and Granta. The standard equipment of the second version includes an 8-valve power unit with a power of 81 hp; it is no longer installed on the second generation Kalina. More modern 16-valve engine with 98 hp. present in both trim levels.

    The power units of the Kalina 2 or Kalina or “Grant” variants do not have fundamental differences from each other. For fans of sports modifications, AvtoVAZ has provided the option of installing a 140 hp engine. which is present in sportskaline. In addition to the high engine power, the designers installed a more advanced version of the braking system, front and rear sports body kits and 17-inch wheels. A limited edition of 500 pieces has been produced on the assembly line since 2014.

    Lada Granta Sport, in turn, boasts a 118-horsepower 16-valve unit, which is present in the lineup. The Grant sport car vs Kalina sport version is approximately the same, taking into account the included engines.

    The driving characteristics of each Lada modification are adapted to harsh operating conditions. The modernization of the chassis was carried out jointly by French representatives of Renault and Russian engineers. As a result, its resource has been increased several times.

    A Japanese automatic and 5-speed manual transmission will be available in all car variants. Therefore, comparisons of types of transmissions can be made depending on the preferences of car enthusiasts. Both types have proven themselves to be reliable mechanisms, easy to switch, which have no vibration and an excellent gear ratio.

    The interior of the “charged” Lada Granta Sport is not much different from the civilian version, but there are still changes:

      A large multimedia system display has appeared in the central part of the dashboard.
    • The steering wheel has a leather braid with red stitching, which is also duplicated on the seats and gear knob.
    • It is also impossible not to note the presence of more comfortable sports seats for the front passengers, which have clearly noticeable lateral support.

      The rear sofa has not received any differences - three adult riders can easily fit here, but only two will be truly comfortable.

      The trunk volume is 520 liters, and under its raised floor there is a spare wheel and a repair kit. The quality of finishing materials in general is slightly higher than that of the “civilian” modification, but is much inferior in comparison with foreign “opponents”.

      The interior design of the Lada Kalina NFR is also not much different from its standard “brother”. The first thing that catches your eye is the orange stitching on the steering wheel, seats, parking brake handle and gearbox. And secondly, there are areas on the steering wheel and thick sports seats with good lateral support.

      In all other respects, we have before us the usual “Kalina” with all its advantages and disadvantages.

      In the central part of the dashboard there is a color LCD display of the media center, just below there is a music control unit, and even lower there are three control knobs for the climate system.

      The trunk volume is 260 liters, but by folding the backrests of the rear sofa, you can get as much as 550 liters of loading space.

    Technical characteristics of Lada Kalina NFR vs Lada Granta Sport

    The main feature of both cars lies under the hood. Thus, the Lada Granta Sport is equipped with a powerful (by AvtoVAZ standards) 1.6-liter gasoline engine, generating 118 hp. With. and 154 Nm of peak torque.

    Its “partner” is a non-alternative 5-speed manual transmission, which allows you to change the first “hundred” in 9.5 seconds. and reach a maximum of 197 km/h. According to the manufacturer, on average a car consumes 7.8 l/100 km, but we know that after pressing the pedal to the floor, consumption will increase by at least one and a half times.

    The sports Granta is based on the trolley of the “civilian” model, but with some modifications. The front independent suspension is represented by MacPherson struts, and the rear by a semi-independent torsion beam.

    At the same time, the suspension received stiffer springs and shock absorbers. The steering is complemented by an electric booster, and braking is provided by disc mechanisms of increased diameter: 280 mm in the front and 240 mm in the rear.

    In the engine compartment of the Lada Kalina NFR there is a 1.6-liter gasoline unit that develops 136 horsepower and a peak thrust of 165 Nm. The engine from the VAZ 211127 was taken as the basis, which received an improved intake system and new software.

    The engine’s “partner” is a 5-speed manual transmission, with which the car accelerates to “hundreds” in 9.2 seconds. and develops a maximum speed of 203 km/h.

    The hatchback is based on a trolley similar to its “civilian” “brother”, however, the manufacturer has changed the front suspension. It now sits on a separate subframe and sports exclusive wishbones. But the rear suspension remains the same - with a semi-independent beam.

    Compared to the regular Kalina, the NFR version boasts a more powerful braking system, represented by 296 mm front and 260 mm rear discs.

    Driving qualities, price tag and equipment of Lada Kalina NFR and Lada Granta Sport

    Thanks to a lowered and stiffer suspension, both cars demonstrate excellent handling (at least for their price). The cars confidently hold a straight line and practically do not give up when passing high-speed turns, although, of course, they are far from European “lighters”.

    In 2022, you could buy a Lada Granta Sport for 609.9 thousand rubles, but today it is almost impossible to find it at a dealer. The reason for this is the fact that the first generation of the model was discontinued, and the appearance of the second generation has not yet been confirmed by anyone. But it is quite possible to find a Lada Kalina NFR, but you will have to say goodbye to at least 830 thousand rubles.

    The set of standard vehicle equipment includes:

    Common features of Grants and Grants Sports

    The body (its metal frame) is the same for both models. “Sportiness” is achieved only through design: original bumpers, deflector, door sills.

    The overall dimensions of the crankcases of the main units are identical, i.e. the designers did not need to change the coordinates of their attachment points. The 16-valve gasoline engines of the compared cars are absolutely no different in appearance, the only difference is in the camshaft and ECU settings. The 5-speed manual gearbox and final drive are similar in design, but the gear ratios on the sports version have been changed with an eye to better acceleration dynamics.

    In terms of equipment with specific options, the Grant Sport is quite comparable to the regular Grant, albeit in a luxury configuration. Both cars have a parking system, ABS+BAS, climate control, audio system, windshield wiper with rain sensor, heated front seats and windshield, electric heating and electric outside mirrors, electric power steering, etc.

    Kalina for Race

    Need for Race is the abbreviation NFR. Autoreview's assumption that the powerful Kalina will be designated as GT did not come true. This car is not official yet, no one will name its characteristics, much less prices and configurations. This is an unfinished project, constantly being refined.

    Serial samples will appear, God willing, only by the end of the year. But we have the opportunity to get acquainted with the Lada Kalina NFR now.

    Externally, NFR almost completely repeats Kalina Sport, the presentation of which will take place on June 7. Here are both models side by side for comparison:

    The body kit, made by Andrey Ruzanov, is identical, with the exception of two ventilation holes on the hood of the NFR. This is a “trick” by which you can recognize the most powerful Kalina. But... For some reason, it seems to me that in the process of pre-production these holes will be abandoned - low-tech, almost pointless from a cooling point of view (and from the point of view of dust in the engine compartment - downright harmful). It looks impressive though.

    In any case, NFR can be recognized by different wheels - seventeen inches (Kalina Sport has 16 inches), with five mounting bolts instead of four.

    There are more differences in the interior. The main thing is that NFR made different front seats for Kalina, with more developed lateral support. They are covered in leather, and the stitching is yellow-orange (instead of red on GS/KS).

    There was even an original emblem of the model embroidered on the backs of the chairs.

    That beautiful yellow stitching is everywhere. On all fabric and leather elements.

    The steering wheel is also “leather”, with a deliberately racing risk of zero position.

    Otherwise, Kalina is just like Kalina. Unless, of course, you know “what’s in her gut.”

    And there is the 21126 engine, boosted to 135 hp. The main change is the intake receiver, structurally similar to that used in the Cup Grants. The new intake made it possible to increase torque at medium speeds, in the region of 2000 - 3000 rpm. and equalize the traction characteristics throughout the entire range. The engine now really spins up to 7000 rpm. The camshafts are also original, even more “hard” than on the 120-horsepower engine.

    The issue has also been reworked. And significantly - they changed the exhaust manifold itself, improving the purging of the cylinders. The converter remained standard, and after it - the muffler system from the current version of the Granta Sport. Almost.

    Engine calibration took several months and the work is by no means finished; changes will still be made to the software.

    The gearbox will remain from Kalina, with a 4.3 main pair. Its input torque is at the limit in relation to the 135-horsepower engine. Or even a little bit - the creators have not yet provided an absolute indicator of torque. Just as they do not provide dynamic and speed characteristics; Everything, they say, is still being finalized. But the question of the self-locking differential has been unequivocally decided – it won’t be available.

    The brake discs have increased in diameter to 282 mm. In general, almost all the main elements of the braking system are taken from Renault Megane with a two-liter engine (calipers, brake master cylinder, etc.).

    The rear suspension architecture remained “Kalinovsky”, only the transverse beam was strengthened. Reduced the thickness of the spacer. The springs and shock absorbers are original, made on the basis of those currently used for Granta Sport. It is possible that they will be unified (that is, they will stupidly take Grant ones). In the meantime, Kalina NFR “sits lower” and has less suspension travel.

    Of course, there will be no stabilization system in this car - adaptation would take too much time (and money, which is important). And they learned to cope with ABS on the previous model, making special grooves in the rear hubs that virtually convert drum brakes into disc brakes. This does not affect the braking efficiency; I checked it myself several times on the Dromovskaya GS.

    “Shots” on the pockmarked Tolyatti asphalt at the Kalina NFR is quite an experience. The thrust is smooth up to the maximum 7000 rpm, and even at the limit you can drive quite efficiently, fortunately, there is no electronic limiter here - they didn’t have time to install it. There is no chatter or vibration of the moment, everything is extremely stable. All you can do is rely on your own sanity and not overclock the engine.

    At low speeds it behaves approximately the same as the Granta Sport: at the very bottom there is a dip, and then a pick-up is immediately indicated. The failure is compensated by the stretched clutch engagement characteristic: the pedal has a long travel, and you can start off very smoothly. There is no harshness at start-up, characteristic of sports clutches, with their rigid pressing springs.

    Of course it's noisy. And the engine makes a loud noise, and the straightened exhaust tract... If they don’t work on the acoustics, then the car will definitely not fit into the UNECE rules on internal noise. Although I like the sound character of this car, it is more racing than the Grant Sport.

    The wheels touch the arches in extreme positions and something needs to be done about it. But what can you do if 17 inches is a fundamental point for this model? Vitaly Prilak, deputy director of Lada Sport, promised to “take it into account and sort it out.”

    The suspension is stiff, even very stiff. Every speck of dust on the road makes a shaking sound. Driving around Togliatti is torture, you are constantly afraid of breaking a tire. The tire profile is so small that the rubber performs almost no damping functions. Such tires will be consumables in our conditions. You can still drive in Moscow, but in the provinces, with its unkempt roads, I would think twice before buying such a car.

    I really liked the front seats; lateral support was provided exactly in the area of ​​the back where needed. At least for someone my size. And it’s comfortable to sit down, and you don’t slide outward in turns.

    Let me make a small generalization.

    In this case, this is the initially high “Kalinovka” landing and the upper mount of the steering mechanism (you can’t transfer it to a subframe, for the life of you). The excellent chassis is extremely dissonant with the antediluvian solutions for landing and steering. In Grant Sport this is not so noticeable; the level of complaints there is lower. And the NFR already has plans to participate in real races. And at this point the concept of the car collapses, under the pressure of systemic contradictions.

    Lada Kalina Sport 2 2016

    A sports car from AvtoVAZ, which is currently not the only sports car in the company’s lineup. This is the Lada Kalina Sport 2, which has gained relatively good popularity in Russia.

    Before releasing the car for sale, the manufacturer decided to create a model on which tests would be carried out in order to understand whether there were errors or not; this release took place in the spring of 2008. A month and a half later, the car went on sale, and initially they appeared in the largest cities of Russia.

    The manufacturer itself states that it plans to sell 2,500 models per year. After some time, a new generation of this car was released, it changed in interior and appearance. Externally and internally it is similar to the Lada Kalina, but on the outside, for example, the car is distinguished by some sports body kits.

    Inside, the car in fact has no differences from the regular version, except for the inscription on the seats “Kalina Sport” and the shape of the seats is slightly different, in all other respects it is a regular Kalina in the maximum configuration.

    Differences between Sport Grants and Grants

    The comparison, ideally, should be made on models of the same year of manufacture, but the basic Granta is already available in a restyled version, and the “hot” version has not been produced since the summer of 2022. Therefore, for a complete and objective picture, all innovations must be taken into account.

    Engine

    • Due to modified valve timing, reduced intake and exhaust resistance, and adjusted firmware of the control unit, the VAZ-21126 engine produces 120 hp . versus 98 hp on the untuned version. True, the Lada Granta can also be supplied with engines of 87 (8-valve) and 106 hp .
    • The speed characteristics of the Granta Sport internal combustion engine (power and torque curves) are designed for intensive growth after 3000 rpm , i.e. The power unit is “tailored” to operate at high speeds.
    • The engines of restyled cars of 2022 compare favorably with models of previous releases by the presence of shockless (“stickless”) pistons, which prevent valve damage when the camshaft drive belt breaks.

    Transmission

    • Unlike the base model, which can have three transmission options, the sports Grant uses only mechanics , but the final drive ratio is made more traction (4.30 instead of 3.71). This allows you to increase the intensity of acceleration.
    • The updated 2022 cars also received a new main gear ( 3.94 instead of 3.71 ). The robotic gearbox has been improved: gear shifting has become faster, and the software provides “crawling” (“urban”) and “sport” modes.

    Chassis
