Diagnostics of VAZ PRIORA using a smartphone and OBD 2 Bluetooth Car ELM 327 Reader Diagnostic Scanner
Often those who purchase OBD scanners for self-diagnosis of their car have questions about how to diagnose a car with only a smartphone with an Android system and Bluetooth ELM 327 OBD 2 scanner.
In this article we will try to describe the diagnostics step by step using the example of the VAZ PRIORA diagnostics.
For other brands of cars that support OBD 2 , everything is the same, the only difference is in the location of the diagnostic connector and in the number of sensors available for diagnostics; if your car model does not have any control sensor, then it is simply not in the list of available for diagnostics.
So we have an OBD 2 Bluetooth Car ELM 327 Reader Diagnostic Scanner and a smartphone without any identifying markings. Having rummaged through the menu, we find the item ABOUT THE PHONE and read: ANDROID 4.1.2; Model GT-I9500 i.e. A Chinese analogue of the Samsung GALAXAY S4, for our purposes any smartphone on Android is suitable and you will need to install the TORQUE - diagnostics and engine control - the most convenient in my opinion and you can easily download the Russified version from the Internet.
1. Find where in the car the OBD 2 diagnostic connector is located in the VAZ PRIORA (station wagon), it was found when opening the glove box (glove compartment) behind it on the left side, on the website shop.avtoc.com in the article about the diagnostic scanner for PRIORA this is the location It has already been suggested that there is no need to disassemble and remove the glove box because the scanner is small-sized and fits perfectly into this connector when the glove compartment lid is open, although it is poorly visible and probably the designer could have chosen a more convenient place.
2. We insert the scanner into the connector without distortion; you can illuminate it with a flashlight if it’s a little dark in the garage and you can’t immediately touch it
3. You don’t need to start the engine right away; first you need to pair the scanner with your smartphone
SYSTEM SETTINGS menu item, find the Wi-Fi SETTINGS item and the Blueto SETTINGS item. Wi-Fi SETTINGS can be switched to OFF mode, but Blueto SETTINGS.., be sure to switch to ON mode and then hold your finger on the inscription of this setting, enter the submenu where there will be an inscription about searching for devices and a list of available devices - in addition to OBD II, there may be, for example, BT-300 (wireless earphone) if you have connected such a device previously. If the scanner is connected for the first time, a window will pop up prompting you to enter a code of four zeros or a sequence of numbers 1234,
we point our finger at this empty line and a very inconvenient keyboard appears on the screen, but after several attempts we manage to dial 1234 and press ok ,
we see the message OBD II paired but not connected
That's how it should be!
4. Start the car engine,
We pick up the smartphone again and run the pre-installed TORQUE
If, when starting the program, a message pops up to CALIBRATE, answer NO,
This can be done as needed later.
Place your finger on the screen just below the inscription GRAPHICS and moving your finger in a semicircle will display several more menu items - we are interested in the inscription ADAPTER STATUS, press your finger and view information about the scanner we have connected to the car
Having thus verified the functionality and normal wireless data exchange, you can also interrogate the scanner about its software version, etc., see which vehicle sensors are available for diagnostics
Yes, Priora doesn’t have that many sensors available for diagnostics - I counted seven) and plus duplication of all dashboard readings
5. Let's return to the main TORQUE and start diagnostics by clicking on ERROR CODES
Further actions do not require comments, you need to wait a couple of minutes and if everything is fine, you will receive green inscriptions on the smartphone screen next to the names of the sensors
if an error pops up along with the decoding, for example 304 - ignition system error, then this indicates the need to take the spark plug wrench and replace the 4th spark plug
TORQUE has many fine settings, but the initial diagnosis of the car can be done right away without worrying about the engine size, etc.
In conclusion, about one noticed subtlety - if in step four, when you launch the diagnostic program, you do not see all the green checkmarks in the ADAPTER STATUS, then with the car engine running, on the smartphone we again go to SYSTEM SETTINGS in Blueto SETTINGS .., and if the OBD II inscription is associated with but not connected remains unchanged, then we point our finger at this inscription, and when prompted to disconnect the device, we confirm the disconnection, then we search for devices again, enter the 1234 , and as a result, after re-entering we should get OBD II paired and connected
and you can return to the running diagnostic program.
Decoding combinations
Well, now it’s time to tell you about decoding fault combinations.
Diagnostic connector for connection to the on-board computer
Decoding codes after diagnostics with a scanner
As stated above, if the measured characteristics do not differ from the standard ones by more than 20%, then everything is in order with the car. What are the standard parameters?
Parameter | Meaning |
UACC | Shows battery voltage. To understand whether there is an error in this case, it is necessary to activate all devices that consume the most voltage. Allowable voltage is from 13.9 to 14.5V. If it is less, then it is necessary to check individual circuits of the network. |
THR | Throttle position parameter. As a rule, if it is faulty, the driver will know about it without diagnostics, since the car will move jerkily and the engine power will constantly drop. Press the gas pedal without starting the engine, but turning on the ignition. The TPS readings should gradually increase to 90% (or slightly less). If everything is so, then the sensor is working; if not, it needs to be replaced. |
FREQ | Crank pulley rotation speed parameter. The rotation speed is up to 840 rpm. If this sensor fails, the operation of the motor will be impossible. |
AIR | Mass air flow parameter. It should not exceed 12 kg/hour. Start the engine and press the gas pedal so that the number of revolutions increases to 5 thousand per minute. In this case, the parameter should increase to approximately 250 kg/hour. Naturally, if the device is working properly, then the indicator will be like this. |
UOZ | Represents the ignition timing angle. It should change in the range from 6 to 15 degrees. |
INJ | This parameter bk represents the duration of the injection pulse (the time required to open each injector so that gasoline enters the cylinder). Ideally, this parameter should be between 3 and 5 milliseconds when driving at neutral speed. If the readings obtained during diagnostics are much higher, then, most likely, the injectors are already clogged and need to be cleaned. Or this indicates low gasoline pressure as a result of a clogged gasoline filter or pump. Press down the gas pedal sharply. The injection time should increase to 20 ms. Ideally, accurate diagnosis of injectors is only possible using a test bench. |
FSM | Idle speed sensor performance indicator. Ideally, this parameter should not exceed 50-60. If you press the gas pedal sharply, it can increase to 160-180. |
ALAM 1 | Indicates the voltage level recorded on the oxygen level monitoring device. When the car engine is warmed up, this indicator should increase from 0.007 to 0.7 V. If this indicator differs, then something is wrong with the circuit. |
LUMS_W | This coefficient indicates the rotation of the crank pulley. Ideally, it should vary around 4 revolutions per second. If it is slightly larger, then this already indicates a misfire in the engine cylinders. This means that you should pay attention to checking the spark plugs (whether they are working, filled or not), as well as the condition of the high-voltage wires. |
QT | Gasoline consumption coefficient. With the engine running and idling, it should not exceed 0.9 liters per hour. |
Deciphering codes for self-diagnosis
Checking instrument panel sensors before diagnostics
Code | Description |
1 | This code indicates an excessively high voltage detected by the bk in the on-board circuit of the Lada Grant. |
2 | If there is a break in the gasoline level sensor circuit for twenty seconds, then this code indicates the need to check the network. |
3 | This code indicates the need to replace the refrigerant temperature control device in the refrigeration system. |
4 | Something has happened in the operation of the air temperature control device; the circuit needs to be checked or the sensor replaced. |
5 | Code 5 indicates overheating of the internal combustion engine. In this case, the problem may be a broken thermostat. In addition, this code may indicate more complex failures. For example, if the cylinder head gasket is broken, the engine will also overheat from time to time. |
6 | This indicates an emergency pressure of the engine fluid in the injection system. |
7 | Indicates a malfunction in the brake system. |
8 | Battery malfunction. Code 8 tells the owner of the Lada Grant that the battery needs to be replaced due to the charge being too low. |
Most common mistakes
Below is a breakdown of the most common error codes encountered when diagnosing a Lada Granta.
Error code | Description of the malfunction |
P0106 | The error code indicates an incorrect wiring signal coming from the absolute motion sensor. |
P0107, P0108 | These error codes indicate a very low or high signal coming from the intake manifold pressure control device. |
P0112, P0113 | These error codes on the State X1 on-board computer indicate a breakdown of the intake air flow temperature control device. Or this may indicate an incorrect sensor signal. |
P0115 – P0118 | One of these error codes may indicate that the refrigerant temperature sensor is not functioning properly. In addition, this may indicate an incorrect signal coming from it. You should check the circuit and operation of the sensor itself. If it shows too high a result, and the antifreeze in the expansion tank does not boil, then most likely the problem is with the sensor. |
P0122, P0123 | Incorrect signal from the TPS, the device and its circuit should be checked. |
P0131 – P0135 | These error codes on the on-board computer indicate a breakdown in the operation of the oxygen level control device before the converter. As in previous cases, it is necessary to check the circuit, and then diagnose the sensor itself. |
P0171, P0172 | We are talking about too low or high level of the combustible mixture. |
P0301 – P0304 | The Lada Grant's on-board computer tells the owner that a misfire has been registered in one of the engine's four cylinders. |
P0325 | The knock sensor is not functioning correctly or the Lada Grant on-board computer has detected a break in its circuit. |
P0645, P0647 | BC reports the need for additional diagnostics of the climate system clutch relay. It is possible that the relay itself may break down or the circuit may break in one of the sections, which requires additional testing. |
P0660 – P0662 | A failure or open circuit of the intake system channel length control valve is reported. |
P0830 | Damage to the clutch system. Perhaps the pedal switch itself or another element of the system is faulty. But in this case everything will be fine with the chain. |
P1102 | The oxygen sensor heater gives a too low signal, which the on-board computer warns the car owner about. |
Features of diagnosing VAZ and LADA cars using auto scanners
Reading time
Difficulty of the material:
For fans - 3 out of 5
Most modern Russian cars of the VAZ and LADA family are equipped with an electronic control unit, as well as an on-board computer. Thanks to such electronics, the use of diagnostic equipment is becoming increasingly important.
The presence of all kinds of sensors on important components (engine, electrical, gearbox) allows you to monitor parameters, as well as accurately determine the type of malfunction. All information read by such sensors is sent to the ECU, then the data is converted into numbers using standardized protocols and transmitted to diagnostic equipment via the OBD2 connector. Then, using the software, the parameters and values of the sensors are displayed on the external display.
The OBD2 diagnostic adapter reads and deletes errors , and depending on the capabilities and cost, such a car scanner can solve other problems, including chip tuning.
Types
The device can be made either as a stand-alone portable element or as an entire multifunctional computer complex. Basically, an automotive diagnostic scanner can be of two types - multi-brand and dealer.
The first type of devices has one significant advantage: it is compatible with various brands of cars. Automobile manufacturers use a variety of information protocols and different connectors for connecting testing equipment in equipping their cars.
Therefore, the software of the universal diagnostic device allows you to work with a variety of vehicles, and a set of various connection adapters eliminates the problem of connecting the scanner to systems.
The second type is devices that have the ability to test electronic systems of only certain brands of cars. Devices of this type are equipped with many functionalities and work as a universal diagnostic scanner. At the same time, they provide for the presence of so-called guided diagnostics. Thanks to it, the tester not only indicates a malfunction, but is also able to determine the cause and indicate an option for eliminating the error.
The functionality of scanning devices for each brand has its own limitations. For example, with a multi-brand scanner it is impossible to reprogram the electronic unit, determine the cause of the malfunction and how to eliminate it. To do this, you need to additionally use special decryption guides, and only then select possible repair measures.
What is checked during diagnostics, and on which cars is this possible?
LADA manufacturers are constantly improving their models, while simultaneously improving technical and technological equipment. The only exceptions are models without an ECU, before 1996.
Problems may also arise when diagnosing cars before 2000, but in any case, these models have a connector, you will need adapters (from 12 pin to 16 pin), or use a VAG 12 pin adapter cable.
Computer diagnostics are possible on the following VAZ models:
- 2104 - 2107 (including until 2007);
- 21053 - 21074 from 2010 (euro3);
- 2108, 2109, 21099;

Engine control unit Lada Granta
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, Granta received new “brains” with CAN support (M74CAN). This innovation is capable of integrating “brains” with alarms and radios with a CAN bus.
They often install a “Standard” controller with Itelma number 11186-1411020-22: This ECU is not compatible with earlier VAZ models. In early VAZs, for example, Priora, the ECU came with a K-channel for data transmission.
Location of the ECU for Granta:
The “brains” are located at the bottom of the front panel, or rather under the glove compartment. It will be better visible if viewed from the passenger seat. The ECU is hidden by sound insulation and upholstery, so it will not be easy to get it out.
ECU firmware:
Serial firmware should indicate an optimized dynamic version for the 1.6-liter 8-valve Granta with an “M74” controller and an exhaust gas emission standard of “EURO-2”.
ECU chip tuning allows you to physically disable the second oxygen sensor (“lambda probe”) along with the catalyst. If this version of the firmware is implemented, this will lead to a significant increase in the dynamic capabilities of Granta.
To find out what firmware the control unit has, use the OpenDiag application, together with a diagnostic adapter connected to the OBD2 connector.
Methods for diagnosing ECUs and errors on Lada Granta via OBD2
Self-diagnosis
On Grant, the ECM with the M74 controller has built-in self-diagnosis that detects malfunctions. The ECM detects the problem, then the “Check Engine” light comes on and the error identification begins. Then the code is saved in memory and shown on the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions about auto diagnostics via a computer or smartphone
Engine diagnostics
The capabilities of engine diagnostics via the OBD2 connector depend on the scanner and software. For example, a simple amateur adapter ELM327, together with the OpenDiag application on a smartphone, allows you to read engine errors and decipher them, as well as view temperature sensors and engine speed, both at idle and while driving in real time.
We provide documentation for engines with electronically controlled throttle valves that meet toxicity standards. Read the files by running engine diagnostics.
ABS diagnostics via OBD2 connector
If problems arise with the ABS, before changing or manually diagnosing the problem, read the errors according to the instructions provided. Checking for errors will show you not only the condition of the sensors, but also the wires and connectors.
Diagnostics of mass air flow sensor
Using the Open Diag program, we record the voltage at the mass air flow sensor. The permissible voltage values are:
- if the sensor is in good condition, the voltage is from 1.01 to 1.02 V;
- in satisfactory condition - from 1.02 to 1.03 V;
- a value ranging from 1.04 to 1.05 indicates a near-death state
Important: If it exceeds 1.05 V, the mass air flow sensor requires replacement!
Diagnostics of the oxygen sensor (lambda probe)
The oxygen sensor is checked using the Open Diag program and an adapter connected to the OBDII connector. We analyze the voltage values at the sensor.
When the engine is running, the voltage should change from 0.008 to 0.7V and back. There should be no smooth declines or freezes on the oscilloscope.
Automatic transmission diagnostics
Diagnostics of the gearbox is also possible, but limited by the Granta ECU itself. Yes, you can use professional, expensive car scanners, but we are talking about self-checking.
Using an adapter and an application on a smartphone, you can see errors in the transmission; if there are any, their decoding will indicate one or another malfunction of the box. Also, in real time, data from temperature sensors is taken from the box.
Automatic transmission errors:
P0720 “Output shaft speed sensor is faulty” P0717 “Turbine speed sensor” P0706 “Automatic transmission selector. No signal" P0705 "Automatic transmission selector. Several signals at the same time" P0974 "On-off solenoid. Open circuit" P0973 "On-off solenoid. Circuit shorted to ground" P0963 "Pressure control solenoid. Diagnostics and testing of the electronic gas pedal
VAZ supplies LADA GRANTA cars with an electronic gas pedal (E-gas) to comply with modern environmental standards.
If the pedal is malfunctioning (no responsiveness or increased engine speed when changing speed on the gearbox), then before dismantling and checking the unit with a multimeter, read the errors through the OBD2 connector.
Typical errors related to the accelerator pedal:
- The “Check Engine” light came on on the dashboard (error 0504);
- Error: Low/High signal level of the first accelerator pedal sensor.
Removing errors will not help here; you need to eliminate the cause of the breakdown and only then erase the errors. If errors are indicated and the pedal does not work stably, you should adjust the sensitivity of the gas pedal itself, it should become more responsive.
EUR - electric power steering
If the EPS diagnostic light comes on or the EPS periodically turns off/on, you should first check the electric power steering through the diagnostic connector.
The same Open Diag application, together with a diagnostic OBD2 adapter, will help with this, or
other scanners: Scanmatic, ScanDoc, Motor-Master. The diagnostic process boils down to identifying errors, decoding them and further repairs according to the type of malfunction.
The check can also be performed without a scanner, in this way:
- Under the steering wheel, near the ignition switch, you should find an 8-pin black connector. You will need to dismantle the casing at the steering column (unscrew the fastening screws from the bottom).
- Next, insert a paperclip and close the two contacts, as in the first photo at the beginning of the article. (these are contacts No. 6 and No. 7).
- Turn on the ignition and look at the control lamp.
- The first signal is a long lamp burning - “1”
- Next, we count the subsequent short signals, if there are 3 short ones then “3”.
- In our case, the result was code “13”.
Electric power steering error codes:
11 - The system is working; 12 - No engine speed signal; 13 - Malfunction of the torque sensor; 14 - EMUR engine malfunction; 15 - Malfunction of the steering shaft position sensor; 16 — Malfunction of the EMUR engine rotor position sensor; 17 — Malfunction of the car’s on-board network (below 10V or more than 18V); 18 — Malfunction of the EMUR control unit; 19 - Vehicle speed sensor malfunction.

Grant diagnostic connector: where is it located?
The OBD port has been actively used in cars all over the world since 2001 . AvtoVAZ began installing OBDII on its models starting with Kalina - before that, a 12-pin plug was installed on the tenth family.
The photo shows an example of an installed ELM327 scanner.
Looking for OBD2 on Grant:
- Sitting in the front right seat, we find the glove compartment lid;
- Place your hand on the bottom edge of the lid and move it to the left to the center console;
- Your hand will rest on the diagnostic connector.
As a visual reference, we look at the ventilation grille at the feet of the front passenger - the required plug is located above it.
It is not necessary to look at the port itself - it is easy to find from the driver's seat. The main thing is to know where to look.
How to use
Before purchasing an adapter, make sure it is compatible with your car. After purchasing the adapter, it is important to correctly connect the scanner to the connector. As a rule, the OBD 2 connector is located in the passenger compartment under the dashboard. Models before 2006 usually have a 12 pin connector (GM), and to connect the scanner you will need a 16 pin adapter.
Information on the location of the connectors is presented in the table and photo below.
Location of diagnostic connectors and recommended auto scanners:
No. | Brand VAZ | Connector location | Suitable and recommended scanners + program |
1 | 2105, 2107 (with injector) | On the left side of the steering column | VAG-Adapter + Adapter 12 pin + OpenDiag Mobile |
2 | 2108, 2109 | Below the storage shelf, in the center.
3 | VAZ 2113, 2114, 2115 | In the cigarette lighter area, approximately 10-12 cm lower. | Scan Tool Pro + 12 pin adapter + OpenDiag Mobile |
4 | VAZ 2110, 2111, VAZ 2112 | On the right side in relation to the steering column, under the dashboard.
5 | Lada Priora, Kalina, | In the opening located behind the glove compartment. | Scan Tool Pro 2022 + OpenDiag Mobile |

7 | Lada Largus | Inside the glove compartment on the back wall and closed with a protective cap
8 | Lada Granta | Right above the cigarette lighter. |
Location of connectors on some vehicles:
How to connect to the ECU
First of all, you need to connect the auto scanner to your smartphone/tablet via Bluetooth and enter “1234” as the password.
As a rule, automatic selection of OBD protocols does not work. You must manually select the protocol.
The first application that finally “saw” the ECU was OBD Car Doctor , which connected using the ISO 15765-4 CAN protocol (11 bit, 500 kbaud). Then the ECU saw the OpenDiag Mobile through the Itelma M74CAN .
The following applications were also seen by the ECU through this autoscanner:
- Torgue
- obd harry
- Car Scanner
- CarPref Pro
- OBD Auto Doctor
- DashCommand
- Piston
Programs and applications used
Software that can be used for diagnostics is widely available. The portable diagnostic device Scan Tool Pro or any other OBD2 adapter without its own external environment is capable of working both through a smartphone (Anroid, iOS) and through a laptop running Windows OS.
Common and popular programs for diagnosing VAZ and GAZ are currently:
• OpenDiagPro. Designed for cars with an injector. It monitors not only all the main digital and graphic parameters of the power unit, but also indicates ECU errors. There is a version for PC and smartphones, used for diagnostics via 16 pin OBD2. • Diagnostic Tool v1.31.2 - functional program, a huge number of adjustments. Works via KLine (VAG adapter cable). Only the version for computers and laptops is distributed. • Standard My Tester VAZ program, used when the vehicle leaves the factory. Also suitable for diagnostic operations. PC version only. • The KWP_D program makes it possible to check all brands of domestic cars, a number of popular foreign cars, and their power units. Desktop version only. • The AVTOVAZ New program is also of interest to users. It helps to audit fuel injection, control the operation of injectors and the fuel pump. PC version only. It also works via KLine (VAG).
What do people pay attention to when choosing a car scanner in 2022?
As professionals in the field of vehicle repair say, all such products can be divided into two large groups - hardware scanners and scanner-adapters. The first type is a completely self-sufficient product that connects to the on-board computer and reads all the data independently. The most modern models are equipped with a connector for connecting to a personal computer. Professionals prefer to use such products. However, it is worth considering that the software of this equipment will have to be updated periodically, and this is done exclusively in authorized service centers.
Adapters will require a fairly modern smartphone or laptop for full operation. Such designs are very popular among ordinary motorists, as they are quite simple to use. In terms of functionality, there is also a certain gradation - dealer, brand and multi-brand. The first ones are equipped with special software that is suitable only for one make and model of car, and they are very expensive. Branded car scanners are also professional equipment; they are cheaper and have less functionality. The programs included in such products are designed only for certain brands of cars. The most common today are multi-brand scanners that are suitable for most cars.
When choosing this equipment, you should remember that its cost is directly proportional to the quality of the software. Let us summarize some intermediate results. So, when buying a car scanner, you should definitely pay attention to the program included in it. The wider the software, the wider range of tasks the device can perform. It is advisable to give preference to a universal product, since it is quite possible that you will want to change your car. If you are buying a scanner for private use, it is best to choose a model with the simplest controls. If the design is connected to a smartphone or laptop using a wire or through a wireless interface, then this will be an additional advantage.
When developing this rating of the best car scanners, we took into account all the points mentioned above, but also paid attention to reviews from users and professionals. An important selection criterion was the ratio of price and quality of design; the most expensive equipment was not included in our rating. Now is the time to turn to the analysis of specific models.

Priora connector
The main diagnostic connectors are OBD connectors. On earlier VAZ models, such as 2110, the OBD-1 connector was used. Currently, the most popular connector, which is used in all modern Lada models - OBD-2, has also been abandoned.
This diagnostic block in the Priora is located behind the glove box compartment; the scanner is connected to it.
Diagnostic kit Scanmatik-2
Diagnostic kit "Scanmatik-2"
There is also a Scanmatic-2 diagnostic kit available for free sale, which is quite suitable for the Granta connector circuit (a laptop is required). A diagnostic program is also included in the kit. On the manufacturer’s official website, the price for the set is 13,700 rubles. Car enthusiasts call this system the best for domestic cars. Suppose you need to do the diagnostics yourself. First, load the laptop and install the desired program. Next, connect the USB cable to the computer. Go to Windows Device Manager. A new COM port should appear there.
We are waiting for the Scanmatik diagnostic program to start. We set the above-mentioned port in its settings. We connect the adapter to the diagnostic connector using the OBD-2 cord (OBD-2 and USB cords are connected using the included adapter). The OBD cable indicator LED should glow green if the connection is established correctly. After connecting in the diagnostic program, you need to open the “Engine” tab and click on the “Auto-detection” button. The diagnostic program will search for the “brain” of the car engine.
Diagnostics
Priora diagnostics can be carried out at any service station. This allows you to identify problems with the engine, namely the culprit of the problem. It will help save money, time and effort to find the cause yourself or at random.
Such engine scanning at a service station is carried out with an expensive and advanced scanner, which is quite expensive. Checking the Priora ECU for errors in a specialized service will cost from 1000 rubles and more.
Apple iOS (iPhone/iPad)
Apple iOS (iPhone/iPad) supports Bluetooth LE (4.0) and Wi-Fi adapters. Adapters using classic Bluetooth (versions 1.x, 2.x, 3.x) cannot be used with Apple iOS devices due to limitations in the iOS operating system.
At the same time, Bluetooth 4.0 adapters have a number of advantages over Wi-Fi adapters:
Firstly, Wi-Fi adapters interfere with the mobile Internet (because your iPhone/iPad will try to access the Internet through the adapter's Wi-Fi network), but Bluetooth LE (4.0) adapters do not.
Diagnostics with ELM-327 scanner
Thanks to Chinese engineers, car diagnostics have become much easier and cheaper. Not long ago, a universal internal combustion engine scanner appeared on Chinese websites, which is suitable for almost all cars with OBD-2 connectors.
The ELM 327 scanner on the AliExpress website costs from 5 to 10 dollars, depending on the version.
This gadget is divided into two types and you should pay special attention to this when purchasing. ELM 327 works with our domestic cars only on version 1.5. Therefore, you need to purchase an ELM-327 v1.5 scanner. If you purchase version 2.1, then work with domestic cars is not guaranteed.
It should also be noted that this scanner only works in conjunction with a smartphone. If you have an Android smartphone, then you just need to buy a scanner with Bluetooth only.
If your smartphone is based on iOS, then you need to purchase a scanner with a Wi-Fi module, since Apple smartphones do not allow connecting third-party devices via Bluetooth.
Leading car scanner manufacturers
Today, there are a large number of devices available to users on the market. Diagnostic scanners can be useful not only for specialists in auto repair centers when clients bring a car for a technical inspection. Errors on the dashboard occur quite often, so diagnostic devices will help save valuable resources - time and money.

The diagnostic connector in a car is a fairly functional option. With its help, you can identify many problems that the owner did not even suspect about. Correcting all breakdowns in a car service center or with your own hands will significantly improve the performance of both the engine itself and the car as a whole.
An example of diagnostics using the ELM327 scanner
Below is an example of diagnosing a car with a scanner from AliExpress on version 1.5 using an Android phone and the OpenDiag application on a Lada Priora.
All manipulations with scanning the ECU must be carried out with the engine running or with the ignition on.
We connect the scanner to the OBD-2 connector and wait until the indicators blink.
Next, go to Settings/Bluetooth on your phone. There we find OBD II and pair it with it. When pairing, the device will ask for a password code - 1234 , this code is the same for all scanners.
The next step is to go to the OpenDiag application. Click on the menu button, select the connection type and check the Bluetooth ELM box.
Next, click on the button in the upper right corner and select our device, in this case OBD II. After this the connection will occur.
The connection process is complete, then you can speed up the application itself and familiarize yourself with its functions.
What is ELM327
ELM327 is a microcontroller (chip/chip) that converts OBD protocols used in vehicle diagnostic buses into the RS-232 protocol.
As it happens, to reduce prices, Chinese manufacturers began to simplify car scanners and replace the “native” ELM327 controllers. The main task of clones is to execute OBD AT commands.
This has led to applications configured for standard protocols implemented in the ELM327 not working as intended (but working). For example, instead of PIC18F25K80 (replacement for ELM327), such auto scanners use the STM32F042 CAN controller

Car scanner ELM327 for car diagnostics: description, functions, programs
A car scanner is a device designed to diagnose various electronic systems in a car. With the advent of car scanners, car diagnostics have become a fairly quick and simple process. Modern car scanners based on the ELM327 controller are very compact, easy to use and provide fairly accurate results.
Using the ELM327 auto scanner, you can identify and eliminate some engine problems at an early stage, which will subsequently prevent serious breakdowns and significantly save the family budget.
It is also worth noting that, unlike classical diagnostics, the ELM327 auto scanner can be used by people who do not have professional knowledge in this field. Due to its ease of use, you can find thousands of positive reviews about this device on the Internet.
Description and main characteristics of the ELM327 auto scanner
A car scanner based on the ELM327 controller is a device that is a diagnostic adapter designed to read information from a car’s electronic control unit and eliminate minor problems in its “brains”.
The ELM327 autoscanner, in particular, can help in solving the following problems:
- Reading the values of engine sensors and other electronic systems of the car;
- Identification of faulty sensors and diagnostics of devices for their correct operation;
- Reading and viewing fault codes;
- Resetting errors in the computer memory (turning off the CHEK ENGINE light).
We will tell you more about the capabilities of the auto scanner below in the review of diagnostic programs.
The ELM327 auto scanner is inserted into a special diagnostic connector, which is most often hidden under the fuse box cover, in the dashboard, or under the driver’s instrument panel. The diagnostic adapter communicates with the car’s computer using the OBD-II (On Board Diagnostic) protocol, but on the Internet it can most often be found under the name OBD2.
The OBD-II standard is supported by almost all American cars manufactured since 1996, and European cars since 2001 (diesel cars since 2004). But sometimes it happens that the auto scanner does not work on cars produced before 2003 - this is due to the fact that not all automakers immediately began to implement this standard.
In order to work with the ELM327 auto scanner you will need a reader with diagnostic software installed. Such a device can be a smartphone or tablet PC running Android, a laptop, or a desktop computer. The software is usually included with the auto scanner.
Depending on the type of execution, connection of the ELM327 autoscanner with a reading device is possible through:
- Bluetooth;
- Wi-Fi;
- USB cable.
Diagnostic modes, OBD protocols for Lada cars
The adapter's task is reduced to decoding the incoming stream of data packets and converting them into a form accessible to external software. ELM327 works according to the protocol principle used in injection-type cars. The device receives information from the ECU data bus, processes it and sends it to a PC or smartphone.
Data exchange is carried out through several types of protocols:
- ISO 9141-2;
- Keyword Protocol 2000
- SAE J1850 PWM and VPW;
- ISO 14230-4 - modular system;
- ISO 15765 - CAN.
Lada cars with electronically controlled internal combustion engines use several protocols:
- CAN;
- K-Line;
- ISO 9141 (for individual units).
The fastest option is the CAN bus. The system can operate in duplex mode, which expands the functionality of the on-board electronics. However, we note: each protocol has its own set of diagnostic modes. The most extensive service is offered by the latest generations of tires. For Lada, the standard set of modes is:
- Operational information from nodes.
- Screenshot of engine parameters.
- Errors recorded in the ECU.
It is possible to adjust the characteristics of the lambda probe for individual ECU modules and firmware.
Important:
Some ECUs do not support the full set of functions without the use of a dealer scanner.
Select the car model and year of manufacture to determine which diagnostic modes your car supports through the ELM327 adapter, as well as what protocol the OBD2 port is based on. The data is presented for the following Lada models and their modifications: Granta, Kalina, Largus, Niva, Priora, VAZ 2107, Vesta, XRAY and others.
Note:
(1) — The numbers between brackets (x3) correspond to the number of vehicles of the same type
(2) - DIN horsepower (multiplied by 0.736 for kW power)
(3) - PID is only supported for the primary oxygen sensor (#1)
- Mode X Column: A vehicle showing 00000000 in a mode means that the corresponding PID is not active and that as a result the mode is maintained but does not respond to any requests. None of the vehicles described below support Mode 8.
- Energy column: fuel type, Die for diesel, Pet for gasoline, Hyb for hybrid
- The vehicles on this list are classified alphabetically by make, model, then in order of increasing horsepower.
This mode returns common values for some sensors, such as:
- engine speed;
- vehicle speed;
- engine temperature (air, coolant);
- information about oxygen sensors and air-fuel mixture.
This mode provides a freeze frame (or instantaneous) failure data. When the ECM detects a malfunction, it records sensor data at the specific point in time when the malfunction occurs.
This mode displays stored diagnostic trouble codes. These fault codes are standard for all car brands and are divided into 4 categories:

About the elm327 scanner “SCAN TOOL PRO” on the DRIVE2 auto portal:
Device and diagnostics using a wireless Bluetooth auto scanner
Before you buy an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter, let’s get acquainted with the technical side of the issue and consider everything in order. What are ELM327 auto scanners? In fact, this is the name of the microcircuit. The controller was developed by the Canadian company ELMEelectronics. The internal architecture of the chip reads and converts protocol data from cars of any brand into a code that is decrypted by the program.
To read information, you need to receive it and then convert it; this is exactly why you need an OBD II controller - a “bridge” between the on-board computer/ECU of the car and the adapter ver. 1.5 ELMЗ27.
Types of ELM327 auto scanners and which one is better to buy
Before you buy an ELM327 Bluetooth, you need to know in advance its firmware number, protocol, and also what you plan to use to scan the car. If you have a smartphone on Android or iOS, then you can purchase a wireless option: the elm327 bluetooth or Wi-Fi auto scanner.
