How to open a car hood if the cable is damaged
You can often come across the following request from owners of “fourteeners”: the hood cable of the VAZ 2114 has broken - what to do? Access to the engine compartment of the Samara is possible if the car enthusiast knows a few tricks. The main difficulty is determining the location of the traction break. Often the “thread” breaks directly at the point of attachment to the hood release handle. In this case, you can manually search the indicated area and try to hook the tip of the cable with pliers. If this is successful, then you just need to pull the torn end towards you to open the hood.
If the break occurs somewhere in the engine compartment, then the situation becomes much more complicated. In this case, you will have to remove the decorative grille from the front of the car. This is necessary in order to forcibly unlock the latch pin. The grille is removed in order to crawl up to the hood lock from below and remove the pin. First, let's arm ourselves with the necessary tools:
- An impact screwdriver that will allow you to unscrew and tighten the bolts (they are very firmly fixed and a simple screwdriver would be out of place here).
- A ratchet wrench with a suitable bit. We will need this tool for a kind of leverage.
- We unscrew the bolt, and in its place we put a pin, which will keep the old lock from falling inside the vase door.
- We dismantle the old castle.
- We install a silent lock in this place.

Note. The bolts will need to be tightened with maximum torque. You will need to tighten it using an impact screwdriver. If special silent bolts are used, then they will also need to be tightened with an impact screwdriver to make it more difficult to unscrew.

After installing silent locks, adjustments will definitely be needed. It will need to be done as follows:
- We change the position of the latch, which is responsible for adjusting the car door.
- We check how the door closes. If it is too tight, the retainer screws will loosen. They will need to be moved outward and re-secured.
- On the contrary, if the door closes poorly, you need to move this very latch inward.
Note. When adjusting a door that closes poorly, you need to make sure that the door stands as it should and does not hang down or protrude.
- If it lowers when closing, it is recommended to lift the latch.
- If, on the contrary, the door rises when closing, then the latch is lowered.
We purchase the necessary materials
To ensure that the doors of your car no longer close with a roar and grinding noise, we will install silent locks on it. To do this, we purchase the necessary kit in the amount of two pieces. Each box has two locks.
Well, the second set that we need is a central locking kit. The universal kit traditionally includes four motors, a control unit, all the necessary wires and several strips.

We install silent locks
The first stage of the work is the installation of new and dismantling of old locks. To ensure that you do not have to remove the door trim, this process must be performed carefully and carefully.
To begin, unscrew the bolts one at a time so as not to drop the internal lock. In the same way, screw on the new silent ones in reverse order.
The second point is to replace the old bolt that holds your lock with a new one.
We apply this scheme to all remaining doors. Having completed the installation, we perform a check. If any problems arise, for example, the door does not close well, then try to push the lock deeper. Although, by choosing the option of silent locks without a “flag”, such situations should not arise.
HOW TO MAKE SILENT LOCKS YOURSELF
But some craftsmen suggest making silent locks on the VAZ 2114 with your own hands. You have removed the lock from the door.
- In its upper part, where the pusher is, there is a thin plate that acts as a plug. This plate must be removed, or rather, broken, otherwise it will not open. Under it there are two springs, which push the locking mechanism. One spring, which is thinner, can be removed completely, and the second one can be placed in its place. Lubricate the lock and you can bolt it to where it stood. The effect of removing the spring is no worse than that of new, silent ones.
- There is another way. To implement it, you will need to buy 40-50 centimeters of heat shrink tubing. Of those clamps that you want to improve, you need to unscrew the fingers. Cut the tube so that the threads do not overlap. The cut pieces of the tube must be heated over an open fire using a lighter or candle. The heat will cause the tube to expand, so carefully but quickly slide it onto the retainer pin. Wait until the tube cools down and fits tightly around your finger. Warm up another tube and also put it on your finger. Trim any rough edges, make sure the tube does not overlap the threads, and the upgraded part can be inserted into the retainer.
But a thicker finger can create a problem with closing. This can also be easily fixed. It is necessary to loosen the fastening of the latch on the body, and the latch itself should be slightly moved so that the door closes easily. The locks on the VAZ 2114 are adjusted in the direction up and down and left and right. By moving the lock, you can adjust the doors and thus achieve perfect closing.
In the same way, you can make silent, soundproofing bolts that secure the lock to the door. But for bolts, a single-layer tube will be sufficient.
Try both methods described above to reduce noise. The locks will work much quieter and softer, and the neighbors will stop looking askance at you.

It is important to take your time so that the hole for the screw is drilled accurately.
- Using an “8.5” drill, drill the front wall of the rack, and use a tap to divide the threads into “10” (step “1”). In this case, the removed screw will prevent the door from closing. This can be eliminated by deepening the hole using a socket and hammer.
- Make a hole with a diameter of 10.5-11 millimeters in the front rack, 8.5-9 millimeters in the second, cut a thread, screw the screw into the rack.
- Try closing the door. It may need adjustment.
- Then you can install the lock drives and connect the handles.
First you need to dismantle the external handle and make a plate that acts as a lever (as in the photo). It should almost touch the windshield, but not rest against it. If you do something wrong, the mechanism will not work.
- After making the plate, you need to assemble the handle and install it in place.
- Shorten the side handle drive rod from the used lock to the required length. Bend the tip of one side at an angle of 90 degrees, and make the other in the shape of a ring (as shown in the photo). Put everything back in place and check.
Causes of cable drive failure
A common cause of cable breakage is natural wear and tear. Over time, it stretches and frays in places where it bends. Lack of lubrication also greatly affects its service life.
If the lock and cable have not been treated with oil for a long time, then jamming occurs. The driver has to make a lot of effort to open the hood. As a result, the cable drive fails.
Regularly monitor the condition of the lock and cable. At low temperatures they freeze. When you feel that the hood is difficult to open, identify the cause and fix the problem without waiting for a breakdown. If the cable breaks, install a new one. Try to securely fix it without bending it. Finally, treat the lock with grease. After quality work done, you will forget about the problem with a broken cable for a long time.
