The domestic VAZ 2110 sedan has a transverse engine and is driven by the front wheels. The drive of the front wheels of the VAZ 2110 is arranged as follows: on the left and right, drive shafts are attached to the gearbox using internal constant velocity joints (CV joints), which, in turn, drive the wheels of the car through external CV joints inserted into the hubs.
The left shaft is short, the right one is longer. The outer CV joint has a housing in which a cage with an internal race and 6 balls is located. Thanks to the radial longitudinal grooves in its cage, the rotation angle of the external hinge reaches 42°. The internal CV joint has a similar structure, the only difference being that the grooves in its cage are not radius, but straight.
In addition, there is a retaining ring on its shank, which is inserted into the gearbox. Drive malfunctions are mainly associated with transmission oil leaks, rupture of dirt covers, or wear of metal parts. You can repair the main drive components yourself.

Good afternoon everyone, I have a problem; yesterday I was driving a buggy on the ice and found out that it doesn’t like right turns: the right side is unloaded; the rubber bands of the lever play and the CV joint falls out(
I saw somewhere a topic comparing long sticks from the figure eight and from the viburnum or priors or all together. I'm interested in which stick is longer and whether it fits the slots?

How to insert a “grenade” into a gearbox
In the case when it is necessary to replace, for example, the oil seal of the Lada Kalina automatic transmission, it is necessary to remove the drive from the Kalina box. We will skip the description of this process and focus on installing a grenade in the checkpoint. So, in order to install the CV joint in the gearbox, after the Lada Kalina automatic transmission drive seal is in place, you must:
- Thoroughly clean the drive from sand, dirt and all kinds of deposits. Solvent, gasoline or something like that is suitable for this.
- Before installing drives with CV joints in the gearbox, it is recommended to replace the retaining ring located at the end of the grenade in order to avoid the drive spontaneously jumping out of the gearbox side gear when the car is moving.
- Next, the shank with the slots of the outer grenade is installed in the hub, the thrust washer is installed and the hub nut is tightened until it stops, but there is no need to tighten it with force.
- After this, the shank with the splines of the inner grenade body is placed in the inner joint oil seal, turning the drive slightly so that the splines of the axle gear and the CV joint housing coincide.
- Then the suspension arm is pulled down and with a strong jerk of the strut together with the steering knuckle, it is necessary to press the drive into the axle gear. You can tell that everything worked out by a characteristic click, which indicates that the retaining ring has seated in the groove. But it would not be superfluous to check the reliability of fixation of the entire structure. To do this, you need to grab the fist of the rack with your hand and forcefully try to pull the grenade out of the gearbox. If the drive remains in place, then the entire operation was successful and you can proceed to further actions.
Grenade retaining ring
But there are points that are worth paying attention to when assembling:
- The retaining ring located at the end of the CV joint must be intact. In addition, if a new ring is installed, it must be selected according to size, since there are cases when it is larger than necessary.
- When installing the drive, the inner CV joint and the shaft itself must be kept as straight as possible relative to each other, this will make it easier to drive it into the gearbox.
- If the “grenade” has difficulty entering the gearbox, you can lightly tap the brake disc with a hammer to make the task easier.
What to do if the CV joint does not enter the gearbox
There are times when the CV joint does not fully seat or does not enter the gearbox. Most often this happens due to a large retaining ring. To check this, you need to remove the Kalina drive from the gearbox, remove the retaining ring and insert the drive back. If everything falls into place without effort, then it is recommended to replace the retaining ring with another one of a suitable size and insert the drive into the Kalina box. In this case, it is necessary to align it with the shaft (the straighter it is, the greater the chances for a quick positive result). An assistant may be needed for this. Use a hammer with medium force blows through a wooden block, or simply use a hammer with a rubber tip to drive the drive until you hear a click, which indicates that the locking ring in the gearbox has opened. If the splines of the satellite are intact and the CV joint is in them, then nothing should prevent it from reaching the end point where the retaining ring is seated in the groove.

measure the length of the shaft; shafts viburnum, ten, chisel have different lengths 2108 - 660mm 2110 - 680mm 1118 - 730mm
Tomorrow I’ll try to remove it from the fence on a jack. I can’t go anywhere, the box is empty, I’d like to know how long the right shaft on the 21102 should be - maybe on an eight-valve engine - not like the 16kL. Thank you - I’ve been following the links for an hour and couldn’t find these parameters .

Here is the answer after my request from VAZ specialists for design drawings of the exact dimensions of the right long drive shaft. 2110 may be useful to someone: 06/25/10 “Good afternoon, K.S. I. It is quite possible that your car has a model 2108 drive. It is 7 mm shorter than the “tenth”. According to the drawing, the length of the drive shaft of model 2110 should be 669.4 mm ('eighth' - 662.4 mm) including tips. What is 'wide diameter distance - 450 ml.' It’s not entirely clear, it’s not regulated.” Department of inspection of service and sales network enterprises. Head Office. A V.
According to the drawings it might be 7mm, but according to what’s in stores it’s 9-12mm, I’ve looked at a lot of them. The right shaft itself is eighth, because the tenth one doesn't fit

How the differential and wheel drives work
Due to the fact that the Lada Kalina is a front-wheel drive car, unlike all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, the differential here is located in the gearbox and is called cross-axle because it acts on the front wheels of the car. There are three types of differentials:
- conical;
- cylindrical;
- worm.
The Kalina is equipped with a bevel two-satellite differential. There are also four-satellite differentials, they are installed on more powerful cars. All types of differentials consist of:
- axle gear;
- satellites;
- main gear;
- differential housings (differential cups).
Twin differential
This interacts in such a way that the differential housing receives torque from the main gear and, in turn, through the satellite gears, transmits it to the axle gears, which then direct the torque to the drive wheel drives. Let's look at the design of the drives themselves. They consist of CV joints (constant velocity joints), or, as they are popularly called, “grenades,” and a shaft connecting the joints.
The left drive shaft on the Lada Kalina is shorter than the right one and is made of steel rod, the right one is made of a steel pipe.
Find out: is 4x4 drive possible in a Priora car?
What would the Priora be like if it had a 4x4 drive - would it have increased cross-country ability, the dynamics of the Lada Priora's engine would be enough for two drives, that's the question! Or rather, it would remain as dynamic as it is now, or the acceleration would become even worse. The chassis would be more expensive, there would be a transfer case, perhaps it would be like on the Niva. And this is not a reliable unit on the VAZ 2121. Of course, in nature there is a car with a 4wd drive, but it would be easier to say: the entire suspension has been redone - there is no other way to make an all-wheel drive Priora - it was designed that way.
Lada Priora is a standard city car with easy handling that even an inexperienced driver can handle in bad weather. What kind of drive is economical and safe in the city - front-wheel drive is correct. The Lada Priora, like all AvtoVAZ cars after 2107, has a front drive. But even such a car can be made even more manageable, but this operation will have the opposite, negative “side of the coin”.
The Lada Priora has always been produced by AvtoVAZ as a front-wheel drive car, but a car enthusiast could never dream of an all-wheel drive Priora. Someone may shake their head skeptically, but someone will say that this 4x4 drive formula for a Priora car is just right for Russian roads! Yes, we are not only talking about rural areas: in the city, on the slopes, a good roll of ice is created.
What is needed to replace the CV joint?
Are you planning to change the “grenade” (it doesn’t matter - external or internal) yourself? Stock up on the following tools:
- hammer, screwdriver, pliers, jack;
- a set of keys and sockets;
- bench vice;
- with a mount or a long enough pipe.
You will also need new cuffs, boots, a hub nut with a stopper and a lubricant. These consumables are usually provided with the new grenade.
Debugg
The detection of even small defects in the boot indicates that the joint is filled with dirt and lack of lubrication. The CV joint cannot be operated in this condition, so it is necessary to remove the boot and fill the hinges with new lubricant.
Before applying fresh lubricant, the part is disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and dirt is completely removed. Then the mechanism parts are washed with gasoline, dried and new lubricant is applied. For the internal hinge, 100–110 grams of lubricant are used; for the external hinge, 70–80 grams are sufficient. The CV joint is installed on the wheel and covered with a boot.
Experts recommend installing new, original boots after lubricating the hinge, since old parts lose elasticity and may crack after a short period of time. Non-original anthers do not fit perfectly at the mounting points, so a new portion of dust and water will quickly fill into the gaps.
You can fix the problem yourself
An important condition for the successful operation of CV joints is the choice of high-quality lubricant. Experts advise giving preference to compositions based on molybdenum disulfide, which minimize friction in the components and effectively protect them from corrosion, and also have a minimal destructive effect on the boot.
It is important! It is contraindicated to use graphite lubricant for CV joints. It cannot protect the part from increased loads, and therefore leads to accelerated wear.
What happens if you don't change the CV joint?
It is possible to operate a car with problems in the CV joint if a slight crunch is heard when turning: it is enough to replace the damaged boots and renew the lubrication of the part. When driving a car with a slightly damaged joint, you must reduce your speed when turning.
If vibration is observed when accelerating and a crunching sound is heard even when driving straight, the CV joint must be replaced urgently. A faulty CV joint can fail completely, causing the wheel to suddenly seize. If this happens at high speed, you can expect the most dire consequences.
It is important! On some vehicle models, significant wear or breakage of the tripod CV joint causes the bearing needles to be thrown into the gearbox housing, from where they are lifted along with the oil and ground by the gears. Repairing such an engine costs almost the same as buying a new car.
Video: what can happen if you don’t change the CV joint boot in time
The CV joint is one of the main chassis parts of a front- and all-wheel drive vehicle, and driving comfort and safety depend on its condition. If there are signs of a joint failure, do not delay diagnostics and repairs - otherwise it is unlikely that it will be possible to “cure” the drive.
How to determine the cause
If you suspect that a wheel is jamming on your Lada Kalina, then drive the car for 3-5 km at the maximum speed allowed in this section. Stop, quickly get out of the car and feel each wheel rim. If one is noticeably hotter than the others, you have found the problem node. Remember, there are times when several wheels jam, and each may have its own reason. But this only happens on those machines whose owners did not monitor them and did not carry out routine maintenance.
There are known cases when all the wheels jammed, but there was only one reason - a faulty turbocharger and incorrect adjustment of the VUT. After replacing the faulty part and adjusting the amplifier correctly, the problem disappeared. If the wheels of the Lada Kalina are blocked, then most likely the pads are critically worn out. Therefore, the pistons went beyond the cylinders and could not return back. Because of this, the pistons constantly press the remaining pads against the disc or drum, which leads to blocking or wedging.
Here is the algorithm of actions required to conduct an initial check to determine a list of possible faults:
Action | Result | Malfunctions |
Determine how many wheels are heated and how they are located | 1 | Wheel bearing or wheel brake |
2 diagonally | The brake pedal is stuck, the turbocharger is faulty and the VUT is incorrectly configured
3-4 | The brake pedal is stuck, the turbocharger is faulty and the VUT is incorrectly configured
2 front ones at the same time | The gearbox has failed
2 rear simultaneously or constantly | The parking brake is out of adjustment, the pads are worn out |
How to check the wheel bearing and wheel brake
The technician checks it for sound: you need to turn the wheel rim very hard and listen to the sound it makes. If you cannot distinguish between the sound of a damaged bearing and a jamming brake mechanism, proceed as follows:
- Raise the relevant part of the car using a jack (support the wheels standing on the ground and place a safety stand under the car).
- Remove the wheel rim and tire.
- Remove the brake drum or caliper with disc.
- Check the condition of the cylinders and pads, as well as the disc or drum.
- Spin the hub. It should rotate easily and silently if the bearing is fully operational. If it is hard or makes a loud sound, then it is faulty.
It is advisable to entrust such checks to a person who knows how to do them, because an amateur may not notice serious problems. Remember, if the rear wheel on a Kalina is stuck and it is difficult to remove the drum, the problem is definitely related to the brakes, although this does not exclude damage to the bearing.
How to check the pedal
To determine if the pedal is causing the problem, proceed as follows:
- press the brake pedal several times;
- get out of the car;
- try to lift the pedal with your hands.
If the free play is 1-3 mm, then everything is fine, if more, then it jams.
How to check GTZ and VUT
To test these mechanisms, do this:
- start the engine;
- press and then immediately release the brake pedal;
- manually push the car forward to determine whether the wheels are wedging through the roll.
If the car is rolled harder than usual, then the gap between the GTZ and the VUT is set incorrectly (the length of the amplifier rod is incorrectly adjusted). If the roll-up has not changed, then the VUT check valve needs to be adjusted or replaced.
How to check the gearbox
If you suspect that a Kalina wheel is jamming due to the gearbox, then do the following:
- Raise the front of the car using a jack and safety stands.
- Remove both wheels, then both brake calipers.
- Put the gear in neutral, then try spinning any wheel.
- If this does not work or it is very tight, then remove the drive shafts of both wheels from the hubs, then check the hub bearings.
- If the bearings are good, the problem is in the box. If both bearings do not spin, then you have started your car too much, so it needs serious diagnostics and subsequent repairs.
How to check the handbrake
Before starting the check, remember exactly when the right rear wheel on the Kalina jammed. If after parking, then this defect is caused by a malfunction of the parking brake inside the drums. If while driving, then this check should be done last, otherwise there is a high probability of error.
To check, proceed as follows:
- Support the front wheels, then engage first gear (engine off).
- Support both rear wheels using a jack and safety stands.
- Apply the handbrake.
- Make sure that the wheels are almost impossible to turn by hand. If they turn easily, the pads are most likely worn out or their activation mechanism is damaged, although incorrect adjustment of the drive is also possible.
- Release the handbrake.
- Spin your wheels. If they jam even a little, remove the drums to check all the parts of the wheel brake mechanism.
- If everything is in order, adjust the drive. If it’s not in order, then first repair the problem unit, then just start setting it up.
If you are not very well versed in the operation and adjustment of the brake system, then it is better to entrust the inspection to a specialist, because safety is much more expensive than the small fee that the specialist will charge. When the rear wheel jams on a Kalina, this is an alarming symptom, because over time it will completely lock, and no one knows when exactly.
If the rear wheel of the Kalina is stuck, it is necessary to determine and eliminate the cause, otherwise you may get into an accident or damage the car. It is especially dangerous when the caliper of the right front wheel of the Kalina jams, because it can completely block while driving, and then a skid is inevitable.

Why was all-wheel drive needed?
All-wheel drive transmission of the new Kalina
When starting to get acquainted with the all-wheel drive Kalina, you involuntarily notice that there was no official information on this matter. The classic all-wheel drive for a passenger model is clearly not suitable in this case.
AvtoVAZ has not used all-wheel drive before, and most likely does not have its own developments. Fragmentary information dates back only to 2006.
Using a simplified version with a locking clutch does not pose a big problem for implementation. But the use of various electronic systems as a 4x4 pseudo-drive requires serious development, so it could not appear like that, right away.
And yet, the Lada Kalina 4x4 was created at one of the Tolyatti enterprises. In this case, three conclusions immediately arise:
- work on an alternative all-wheel drive is still underway at the plant;
- AvtoVAZ plans to expand the market by conquering new niches;
- New faces appeared in the company, for example, a Swedish specialist in the place of director and marketer.
These three components allow us to look into the future. Firstly, all-wheel drive is no longer seen as the only reason that gives the car the opportunity to increase cross-country ability. In the developments of all-wheel drive on a passenger car, you can see the more confident behavior of an active hatchback on the highway. Secondly, do not forget the announced appearance of the Lada XRay in 2022.
How does a wheel wedge or jam manifest itself?
If the right or left front wheel, as well as any other wheel of the Kalina, does not jam too much, then while the car is moving it should spin in the same way as the others, but the wheel rim gets very hot and fuel consumption increases. If there is a strong jam, the car begins to pull towards the problem wheel: the left one pulls to the left, and adjusting the wheel toe does not change the situation. If it is completely jammed, it does not rotate, at least when moving slowly, and driving is always accompanied by the smell of burning rubber.
It happens that the wheel disk does not brake constantly, but periodically seems to catch it. The driver does not immediately notice the problem. But as soon as you find it, you need to immediately repair the car, because such tacks can easily turn into a complete blockage.
Exterior and interior
Lada Kalina 2 with all-wheel drive is a piece product, at least for now. If its production is put on the assembly line, manufacturers should be prepared for high competition. Similar cars are available in the arsenal of Ranault, Opel, Subaru and other companies. However, the domestic novelty has its own distinctive features that allow it to stand out from other models.
Which salon do pop stars and showbiz prefer? For example, the car of Alexander Kokorin, a famous Russian football player who recently joined the main team of the Russian national team, costs 75 million! It’s just crazy money, but the car is just “lala”.
At first glance, Kalina 2 gives the impression of a practical car, in which there is nothing superfluous, and every detail clearly fulfills its purpose. It is worth noting:
- a low bumper skirt that slightly covers the wide front wheels;
- hood with open air intake.
SUV based on LADA Granta. Is such a budget employee needed?
A new four-seater SUV based on the Lada Granta has been developed in Togliatti. The creators of the new product want to offer Russians a lightweight off-road vehicle, distinguished by its bright design, sporty characteristics and low price.
The development of a new SUV based on the LADA Granta platform was undertaken by a group of engineers from Togliatti under the leadership of independent designer Vitaly Ivanov. The main idea of the project is to create a “people's Russian sports car”, which is designed for off-road use. Moreover, the authors are confident that the competencies and technologies necessary for the production of such cars already exist in Tolyatti. Autograd has long become famous for a large number of companies that produce tuning parts for LADA cars. As the authors of the project are sure, the new SUV based on LADA Granta will be of interest not only to active drivers, but also to business structures: farms, country clubs, hotels.
The developers chose the Granta platform for an off-road sports car because of its accessibility, prevalence and maintainability. The new car has not yet received its own name. Nevertheless, the first prototype of the SUV has already been assembled. Moreover, the project provides that the new product will have several body design options. Everything will depend on the purpose of the car. They decided to make the prototype in the lightest version - a beach all-terrain vehicle. On the same base you can make a small farm truck.
To create a prototype of a beach all-terrain vehicle, the Granta platform was made 200 mm shorter. The developers borrowed the engine, gearbox, brakes, and electrics from the production model. Thanks to this, the cost of the car, as the authors of the project expect, will be quite affordable. This platform was supplemented with external panels made of composite materials. The panels are completely new and can be replaced with others if they fail. The curb weight of the SUV is about 700 kg. Due to the low weight of the car, a standard engine (98-106 hp) can develop a specific power of almost 150 hp. per ton. If the new product is equipped with a forced engine up to 170-185 hp. from Granta Sport - then the specific power of a sports SUV will be from 250 hp. per ton.
The creators do not provide all-wheel drive for the people's cross-country sports car. At the same time, the car will receive independent suspension on all wheels with original subframes, which will be borrowed from rally LADAs. The creators plan to compensate for the insufficiency of the single-wheel drive off-road with a “short” main pair (4.1-4.3), a self-locking cross-axle differential and toothy off-road tires.
The price of the new SUV can be comparable to the price of the LADA Granta. But this will be possible if at least 1000 such cars are produced per year, and vehicle kits for the sky are purchased at AVTOVAZ.
So far, only the first prototype of the people's sports car has been assembled. The car moves under its own power. However, his appearance is still being worked on. Currently, the project has been paused: the developers are considering possible options for the further development of the car and its production. It is assumed that the appearance, equipment and purpose of the SUV will depend on the requests of potential buyers. They also want to involve representatives of the Russian auto design community in the project. But the developers cite the lack of funding as the main problem in implementing the project. Either big business or government participation can help here.
