Wipers are devices used to clean the windshield and rear windows from dirt, dust, moisture and snow that accumulate on them. Very often, driving without them is simply impossible and even dangerous (especially in rainy weather or snowfall). That is why, in the case when the wipers on a VAZ 2114 do not work, the motorist must find the cause of this problem as quickly as possible and eliminate it.
Windshield wipers VAZ 2114
The principle of operation of the device itself is quite simple - long narrow brushes connected by a special lever to an electric gear motor move back and forth across the glass and clean its surface. In order to improve the cleaning properties of the wipers, the glass washer can also be turned on along with them (if necessary).
The wiper blades themselves are replaceable, and in case of damage or severe wear, they can be replaced with similar ones.
Rear wiper VAZ 2114
When replacing brushes, it is worth remembering that the new brushes must be exactly the same length as the old ones. Shorter brushes will not be able to clean the entire surface of the glass, as a result of which the viewing angle will decrease, and longer brushes will press weakly against the glass, and the quality of its cleaning will be extremely poor.
On the 14th model, the wipers can operate in several modes at once, which the motorist can choose, namely:
- intermittent mode;
- constant mode at 1st speed;
- constant mode at 2nd speed;
- constant mode synchronously with the washer.
Why the rear wiper of the VAZ 2114 does not work
Before going to the inspection, I discovered that the rear window wiper was not working. There is no noise and there is no movement of the wiper either, but the motor should work.
It is clear that since the rear window washer does not work, then three reasons may be to blame:
- Fuse
- Shift lever
- wiper motor
Since a new motor is not cheap, I decided to tinker with its repair myself.
First I checked the fuse. It turned out to be without damage or soot. Then I decided to check the steering column switch. Since all its other functions worked, except for turning on the rear wiper itself, I decided that it was working. It's time for the motor itself.
The windshield wiper does not respond to switching or switching modes
If you try to turn on the windshield wiper, but your VAZ-2109 windshield wipers do not work, and when you switch the lever, you cannot hear the relay clicking or the sound of the electric motor running, the cause may be either in the switch or in the relay or in the fuses.
In this case, you must first check the integrity of the wiper. It is located in the mounting block and is designated F5. You can check it with a multimeter set to tester mode. Then move on to the bimetallic fuse installed in the purifier gearbox. If the wipers stop working on a VAZ-2109 in winter, this may be the reason. This fuse has been supplemented by the latest modifications of the Nine. Its role is to protect the motor from overheating in cases where the brushes are primed to the glass. Check it with the same multimeter that is in tester mode.
Removing and disassembling the windshield wiper motor
All the important parts of the rear windshield wiper are located under the trim. To remove it, I had to tinker, since it was attached to special holders, which are not so easy to remove without special tools. Fortunately, I had a nail puller at hand and it was perfect for removing these fasteners.
After unscrewing the rear wiper mount, I unscrewed the mount of the motor itself. I disconnected it from the block and took it home for inspection.
There appears to be no damage. Then he unscrewed the mount of the motor housing and pulled the structure out of it. The mechanism itself is covered in lubricant; there was plenty of it.
I looked at the gears, they were intact. Next, I examined the wires attached to the microcircuit. They had a raid. I thought this was probably the reason and decided to move them a little (in a good way, it would be better to resolder them), the “dust” flew off.
That’s it, there’s nothing more to look at, I put the mechanism back together and went to connect the motor to the wiring block to see if it works or not.
I turn on the ignition and rear window wiper. That's it, the rear wiper is working. Hooray! I screwed everything into place and went for inspection.

Reasons for wiper failure
There may be several reasons why the windshield wipers of the VAZ 2114 do not work.
The most common of them are:
- Fuse failure.
- Malfunctions in the operation of the electric motor.
- Breakage of the drive trapezoid or its individual rods.
- Broken steering column switch.
The first problem can be solved most simply - you just need to check and, if necessary, replace fuses F16 and F7 (they are located in the common fuse block).
The second reason is the failure of the electric motor (geared motor) driving the device. Such a malfunction is extremely rare, since the electric motor breaks down infrequently, being one of the most reliable elements in the design of wipers.
Steering column switch (guitar)
The windshield wiper starts when the switch on the steering column is pressed. It is logical that its mechanical failure can also cause a malfunction.
Fixing this problem will take a little longer than replacing a blown fuse. If you have even the slightest experience in disassembling a car, you can change this switch in a matter of minutes. Due to frequent use of the switch, parts in its design wear out. Poor quality metal and plastic used in the switch shortens its service life. The cost of a new “guitar” is about 300-400 rubles, so there is no point in trying to fix a broken switch. A typical situation for a faulty “guitar” is setting the purifier to one mode. When considering the reasons why the rear wiper may not work on a VAZ 2114, do not forget about this part, because it is most often prone to breakdown. The replacement takes place in several stages: the protective casing is removed, the block with wiring is disconnected, and the “guitar” assembly is removed. Assembly occurs in reverse order.
For a detailed study of the process of removing the part, you can watch the video with instructions. During the work, it is recommended to clean the second switch from dust and dirt.
Advice for car enthusiasts
When replacing windshield wipers with new ones, you should give preference to modern, frameless models.
They have such advantages as:
- higher reliability (compared to classic models);
- increased service life;
- absolutely silent operation (there are no squeaks common for frame wipers);
- effective cleaning of contaminants.
Such wipers will not only do their job more efficiently, but will also significantly transform the appearance of the car.
Useful video
You can glean additional useful information from the video below:
Rear “wiper” - the rear window cleaner is located on the rear door of VAZ 2108, 2109 cars. It consists of a gear motor, a lever and a brush (“wiper”). The rear window washer consists of an electric motor in the washer fluid reservoir, an electromagnetic valve for turning on the rear window washer, pipes through which washer fluid is supplied and a nozzle above the rear door.
Features of electrical circuits for turning on the rear window cleaner and washer (rear wiper)
— Electric current enters the system for turning on the cleaner and washer from terminal “30” of the generator, when contacts “30” and “15/2” of the ignition switch are closed.
— The steering column switch (right, terminal “53ah”) receives current from the ignition switch, through fuse No. 4 (F7) and block Ш3 (Х3) of the mounting block.
— When contacts “53ah” and “53H” of the steering column switch are closed, the wiper motor on the rear door of the car is turned on; when contacts “53ah” and “WH” are closed, the rear window washer is turned on.

Why the VAZ-2114 wipers don’t work and what to do
The windshield wipers on a VAZ car must ensure that the windshield and rear glass are cleared of precipitation that prevents the driver from concentrating on the road. If the windshield wipers do not work on your VAZ-2114, then it is unsafe to drive onto the road in rainy weather. To quickly solve the problem, you can try to repair them yourself. Any successful repair requires knowledge of the design of the broken unit.
Design of the VAZ-2114 windshield wiper
The windshield wiper on the VAZ-2114, as well as on other models, consists of the following components:
- drive (electric motor with a long shaft);
- gearbox;
- lever system (trapezoid).
It is the last part that drives the wipers.
A worm is cut into the front of the electric motor rotor, which drives the main gear of the gearbox. When the windshield wiper turns on, voltage is supplied to the electric motor and the shaft begins to rotate, driving the gearbox. Thanks to it, the levers move, to which the ends of the wiper housings, located on the outside of the car body, are attached. There is a special hook at one end of the shaft. With its help, the moving contact of the windshield wiper stops in the extreme position is controlled.

Wiper control
The wipers are controlled from a switch mounted on the steering column, which allows the wiper to operate in several modes, necessary in different weather conditions. The VAZ-2114 car has three types of wiper movement:
- intermittent mode;
- constant low speed of movement;
- constant high.
Often in VAZ cars the windshield wiper does not want to work in only one mode, so you need to know not only the design, but also the mechanism for controlling the glass cleaning system.
Intermittent mode begins to operate in the first and second positions of the switch. A relay located on the circuit board of the car and designated in the diagram as “Short circuit” is responsible for its operation. In the third position of the switch, the wipers operate in constant mode at a low speed. To switch the wiper to constant high-speed mode, you need to turn on the fourth position.
Electric motor does not stop in intermittent mode
Intermittent mode differs from others in that at the end of each cycle the wipers stop in their original position. This is achieved through the movement of a cam located at the rear end of the gear shaft. Creates and interrupts the movable contact of the wiper. Violations in the operation of wipers in intermittent mode are usually associated with its malfunction - wear and tear. The problem could also be with the switch board or its contacts.
The cam can be easily replaced by yourself. As for the plate and contacts, if necessary, you just need to bend them.
Causes of malfunction and their elimination
It often happens that the wipers do not respond to switching modes.
If you turn on the wipers and when you switch the lever you do not hear the sounds of the electric motor or the clicks of the relay, the reason may be hidden in three places: In such a situation, you first need to check the functionality of the fuse. It is located on the circuit board designated F5. You can check its working condition using a conventional tester. You also need to check the bimetallic fuse located in the purifier gearbox. If the wipers on a VAZ-2114 stop working in winter, there is most likely one reason - severe frost. The same fuse prevents the windshield wiper from turning on in case of overheating or freezing of the blades to the windshield.
Next, you need to check the relay (“short circuit” on the circuit board). You need to find it and temporarily replace it with a new breaker, and then check the operation of the wipers. If the windshield wiper does not function, we continue to look for the problem area. It is quite difficult to independently verify the operation of the switch. It consists of a complex structure, so it is easier to change it than to try to repair it. If the turn signal refuses to work together with the windshield wiper, the problem area is the switch located under the steering wheel.
Trapezoid repair
If the wipers on a VAZ 2114 work slowly, this indicates the need to repair the trapezoid. Although this cannot actually be fixed, it is enough to replace the failed element.
Replacing the trapezoid
Replacement will be required in case of mechanical damage. The procedure is quite simple, but here you must follow a certain sequence.
- Disconnect the wires under the hood that connect to the fuse box.
- Remove the heater fan protective cover.
- Remove the heater (stove) filter.
- Turn off the stove motor. It just slides to the side, no need to disassemble it.
- The cover is removed from the windshield wiper.
- Under the rubber boot there is a nut that holds the wiper in place. The lid should be slightly raised and the nut will be easy to unscrew. Remove the windshield wiper.
- Remove the rings and spacers from the wiper shaft.
- Do a similar procedure with the second wiper.
- Under the hood, unscrew the bolts connecting the trapezoid to the body.
- We remove the fuse box and the stove motor, or unscrew the gear motor from the trapezoid, after which the motor and trapezoid are removed one by one. There are two ways to get a broken trapezius.
When the relay is triggered, the electric motor does not start
The cause of failure of the electric motor may be either a blown fuse or the motor itself. Fuses must be tested for functionality. If they are in working order, you need to inspect the trapezoid located under the hood; perhaps it has become deformed or a foreign object has gotten into it. In severe frost, again, you should check whether the blades are frozen to the windshield.
If the trapezoid is normal and the wiper blades move freely, you should definitely check the electric motor. To exclude other malfunctions, it should be removed from the car and connected directly to the battery. If it starts working, then it’s time to look for the cause in the electrical circuit.
Symptoms of malfunction
To understand a broken windshield wiper, let's look at what signs it may have.
Symptoms of a malfunction may include the following:
- when the device is turned on, it does not respond at all (the relay does not click, the electric motor does not work);
- the relay is triggered, but the engine does not turn on;
- both the relay and the motor work, but the hands do not move or do not move in the wrong direction;
- the intermittent mode of the VAZ-2109 windshield wipers does not work;
- the engine does not stop in intermittent mode;
- The wipers are slow.
Why does the rear wiper of the VAZ 2109 not work? Troubleshooting and repair
Windshield wipers, wipers, brushes are essentially the same thing. As a rule, we remember their existence only when it starts to rain or when another bird flying by promises us great wealth right on our face :-). It is then that we remember the existence of these miracle devices that can so easily and effortlessly do all the dirty work or simply provide us with normal visibility in the rain, necessary for safe movement.
According to the “law of meanness,” the wipers will stop working exactly at the moment when it rains, snows, or when the glass needs cleaning. But this doesn’t make it any easier; the fault needs to be eliminated, but before that it wouldn’t hurt to find it. In practice, it turned out that finding the reason why the engine does not start is much easier than understanding why the rear wiper of a VAZ 2109 does not work. To be honest, at first, I didn’t even know where to start and what to actually check, the mechanism is as simple as “two rubles” and what -there can be no failures, but the fact remains that the wiper does not work and does not react to anything.
As you may have guessed, today we will talk about the rear wiper, or more precisely, about why the rear wiper of the VAZ 2109 does not work.
So, let's figure out what, how and why.
Windshield wipers do not work: the motor turns and the blades are in place:
- The reason for this may be poor contact or severe wear of the gearbox drive shaft.
- The nut securing the trapezoid to the drive has come loose.
The rear wiper does not work and there is no sound from the motor:
- Perhaps the steering column wiper switch has failed. Check the voltage on the wires with a tester.
- The windshield wiper drive (motor) itself has failed.
Problems with the electric motor
Having checked the wiring and protection elements of the windshield wiper circuit and found no fault, we diagnose the electric motor that drives its mechanism. To do this, it is better to dismantle the engine.
Having done this, turn on the ignition and move the switch knob of the wiper control unit to fast or very fast mode. Using a multimeter, measure the voltage at the motor connector. The device should show the same voltage as the battery. Having made sure that the current reaches the electric motor, but it does not start, we can conclude that the windshield wiper does not work precisely because of a malfunction of the engine.
Most often this happens due to wear of the current-carrying brushes, but sometimes the problem lies in the short circuit of the turns of one of the windings. You can try to repair the electric motor by replacing the brushes or restoring the windings, but it is easier to buy a new one. It costs around a thousand rubles.

Causes of rear wiper malfunction
- Steering column switch not working. It’s easy to check: turn on the rear wiper using the steering column switch and look at the voltage at + terminals 1 or 3 on the mounting block (see diagram). If there is no voltage, the steering column does not work . There is another option: we disassemble the steering column and check for a short circuit between contacts 53ah-53H. If there is a short circuit, then the steering column works .
- Not working gear motor. Either replace or repair a non-working gear motor. A non-working gear motor means a malfunction of both the motor itself: commutator, brushes, fuse, etc., and its components: crank, teeth. How to replace the rear wiper gear motor?
- The problem is in the wiring: either the wires going to the rear wiper gear motor have oxidized or broken. Particular attention should be paid to the weight of the gearmotor and its tightening. It would be better if you cleaned the mass again and attached it to another place. It is also possible that the wire may break at the junction between the roof and the trunk lid.
To check, it is better to check the presence of contact on the rear wiper block using a tester.
As for relay K3, it does not take any part in the operation of the rear wiper, which is a common mistake for beginners in car repair.

Geared motor
The most undesirable malfunction is the failure of the purifier motor. It rarely breaks, but cannot be repaired, so it requires complete replacement. Its price is low, so it is enough to replace the entire part and the vacuum cleaner will work again.
The causes of engine failure are as follows:
- Constant loads and dry work";
- Wear of internal mechanisms;
- Moisture entering the body and causing corrosion;
- Mechanical failure.
Please note that to extend engine life, the windshield wiper blade must be replaced regularly. When the brush wears out, the quality of sliding on the glass is lost, so a large load is transferred to the motor. Repairing a faulty wiper yourself is possible, but requires experience working with electrical appliances and mechanisms. Finding repair kits for this part is problematic, so it is worth considering the option of installing a new engine. The rear wiper gear motor does not require major repairs, but cannot withstand overloads and operates on dry glass. In addition, to extend their service life, it is worth considering the size of the wipers, since it is more difficult to move the wiper on glass.
