Preface

In Soviet times, they did not bother with the particular complexity of depicting trademarks, although the story of the UAZ Swallow, which led to claims from Opel, is indicative in itself (the emblem had to be replaced). Pardon the tautology, the scary-looking “VID” logo, resembling either the first president of Russia or an old witch with a toad on her head, was invented by the wife of Vlad Listyev, a well-known TV presenter and journalist in the nineties of the last century. In fact, the mask of the famous eastern philosopher from Ancient China, Hou Xiang, was taken as a basis. The logo of the upcoming world football champion in Russia visually repeats the award for winning it - the cup. And the three main emblems should evoke associations with love for: football, space exploration and, through iconography, God.

The topic of this article is the logos of the Lada car. The history of their creation, interesting and related facts about them. These logos are from that series of world brands that everyone speaks to themselves, once you see them or reproduce their image using an associative connection.

Lada car logo

It all started with the incompetence of the relevant services of the auto giant, which had just been built on the banks of the great Russian Volga River, near the city of Kuibyshev (now Samara). In a hurry, and after acquiring a license from Fiat to produce a passenger car, simply named, like everything in the USSR, VAZ (Volzhsky Automobile Plant), everything happened in a wild hurry. This is how construction was carried out, documentation was prepared, and personnel were recruited. So they forgot to register the trademark of this brand.

They had already started producing the famous “kopek”, VAZ-2101, when they realized it. On radiator grilles arriving from Italy, the emblem space was left empty. They acted again in Soviet traditions - simply and without being clever. Three Russian letters were added to the exact proportions of the previous emblem, and that’s how the Lada logo – VAZ – appeared.

Incident with the inscription TOGLYATTI

But nevertheless, the “kopek” came out with a new emblem (in total, the logo was modified six times), symbolizing the Volga River and the Russian boats that sailed along it in ancient times. The author A. Dekalenkov set himself the task of making the Russian letter B, that is, Volga, visible in the outline of the boat.

At the bottom he wrote “TOGLIATTI”. Togliatti is a city (formerly Stavropol-Volzhsky), stretching along the banks of the Volga. Renamed in honor of the then General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party - Palmiro Togliatti. In this city, in 1966, a plant was launched for the mass production of a “national” car.

Dashing nineties

In the early nineties of the last century, along with the whole country, AvtoVAZ was experiencing a crisis. The plant could, despite the crisis, actually become “fabulously rich,” since the cost of production was less than half the real price of the car. But the plant did not get anything - everything was taken away by resellers who swarmed around AvtoVAZ like bugs, sucking out every last ruble. The manufacturer was confidently heading towards bankruptcy.

At the same time, it was also a time of radical change. Of course, they also affected the Lada logo. In the West they borrowed the oval shape. The boat was stylized as the Latin letter S, and the sail as a V (intentionally or not, the result was the famous ancient Roman abbreviation meaning “against”). White arcs emanated from the sail in different directions, forming another, this time, unfinished oval. The background is blue, as is the word LADA in large font.

In terms of its execution and the philosophy of the Western type of thinking, the trademark has turned into a full-fledged logo of the Lada VAZ. We have long seen plastic with a chrome plate in cars of the “tenth” Lada family.

From “kopeck” to “eight”

Already on the very first Zhiguli model, the VAZ-2101 sedan, the emblem began to change. The version of the sign without the inscription “Togliatti” also had a wider upper part, and the pronounced “facetedness” of the edging disappeared. And on the VAZ-2103 model the sign changed again - the boat itself slightly changed its proportions, stretched out, and the edging “turned over”, and now the narrower part was not at the top, but at the bottom. Overall, the sign became almost rectangular. Actually, through the efforts of the VAZ Style Center, it nevertheless acquired a clearly rectangular shape, but somewhat later, at the stage of a deeper modernization of the “classics”, the VAZ-2106 model.

Technologically, the first versions of the VAZ emblem were a rather complex product, consisting of several parts. It is believed that the “canonical” Zhiguli emblem contains a relief chrome-plated boat, a chrome-plated edging, and a background covered with ruby varnish, through which volumetric waves shine through, creating the effect of an ancient Russian boat floating on water. These were the emblems on models “first” through “third”, and they remained like this on the first “sixes”, although the sign itself on the VAZ-2106 became, as we already know, rectangular.

However, on the “sixes” of later years of production, especially in the post-Soviet period, the rook lost its former luster - the inner surface of the badge overlay was painted not with red varnish, but with black paint, as a result of which the relief “waves” on it ceased to be read. Now on the Internet you can find numerous know how - recipes for bringing the late rough “six” emblem to an elegant “canonical” look. Note that VAZ-2106 emblems from early years of production are also highly valued on the market - for example, the site from which we borrowed the photo offers such an emblem for 50 euros.

On the “fives”, “sevens” and “eights” the background in the form of waves was completely abandoned - the emblem became much simpler in technological terms, chrome, steel and varnish were replaced by cheaper plastic. And the sign itself continued to “mutate”, and if on the VAZ-2105 the proportions of the rook were close to the earlier models, then on the VAZ-2108 it was slightly “flattened”, and more noticeable roundings appeared along the perimeter of the sign, at the corners of the edging.

Advertising of the domestic automobile industry by V.V. Putin

At the start of its sales in 2004, the Lada Kalina logo was slightly optimized - the image became more voluminous, and the outline of the boat changed just a little. The Lada Granta also traveled around the country with the same sign. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin made a great contribution to the promotion and advertising of both the trademark and the AvtoVAZ cars themselves. While holding the rank of Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, in 2010 he drove more than two thousand kilometers in three days in a yellow Lada Kalina, giving it a positive assessment.

And in 2022, already at the rank of President of the Russian Federation, during a conversation with a resident of the city of Bryansk, the owner of such a car, he called the Lada Kalina a good car. She did not perform so well in “communication” with the president of Lada Granta. At first the trunk didn’t want to open, and then it didn’t start for a long time. By the way, when Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin arrived at the meeting of the Valdai Club, he spoke about the Lada Vesta just as well as he did about the Lada Kalina, mentioning its acceleration, ease of control and smooth ride.

Purchase of AtoVAZ shares by the Renault-Nissan alliance

In June 2014, the Renault-Nissan alliance increased its share in AvtoVAZ shares to more than 2/3. And the next year a rebranding took place, which also included the Lada Priora logos. The new (developed by chief designer Steve Mattin) and so far the latest emblem has already appeared on all Lada cars produced since then - Lada Kalina, Lada Granta, Lada Priora, Lada Vesta, Lada Xray ", "Lada Largus" and "Lada 4x4".

The logo became larger, convex and voluminous (wits called it 3D with sails), the blue color was removed and one full oval remained. Expert opinions, as always, are divided. Many people praise the new logo, while others also blaspheme it indiscriminately. Let's give a neutral opinion about the oval. In car emblems, the oval occupies a share of about 1/3 (this oval is closest to Ford’s) and if the restyling should convince the buyer that the Lada is the most automobile car, then the goal has been achieved.

Dashboard indicator symbols

When starting up, almost all the icons on the dashboard light up - this way the operation of the light bulbs is checked. Some drivers believe that these are messages about malfunctions of some Lada Priora systems.
