Original sizes of brushes on Grant

The length of the driver's windshield wiper is 600 mm. The length of the passenger wiper is 410 mm. Fastening type - “hook” (in English hook).

Foreign manufacturers indicate the length of the windshield wiper in inches, so the suitable length for a passenger blade is 16″. Sixteen inches - 406 mm, probably because of this, brushes with lengths of both 40 and 41 cm can be installed on the right side of the Granta. If desired, you can install a passenger windshield wiper up to 45 cm, but I would recommend staying in the range of 400...410 mm.

Optimal size

The standard size of the Lada-Grant windshield wipers on the windshield, which is indicated in the instruction manual, is 60 cm on the driver’s side and 41 cm on the passenger’s side. At the same time, on the left (driver's side) the maximum size of the brushes is indicated. If you set it even 1 cm more, the wipers will knock and fail faster. On the right passenger side it is possible to increase the length of the brushes. The maximum length in this case will be 45 cm.

Frameless wipers on Granta

Common Mistake

Installing frameless brushes, especially the budget range, does not always lead to the desired results. At speeds up to 60 km/h, the windshield wipers work perfectly, up to 80 - passable. And then, if you drive along the highway faster than 90 km/h, the blades no longer adhere to the surface of the glass - they “fly up”. Although everything looks great from the outside. Let us remember that here we were talking specifically about frameless ones. Perhaps our criticism will not be relevant for expensive solutions.

Previously, in the 2109 and 2114 families, flatter glass was used than on Kalina/Grant. On convex glass, the “right wiper” may not reach the lower corner (see photo). The problem is solved by installing frameless brushes. And what this entails was discussed above.

Signs that require replacement

To determine whether the brushes are worn out and the need to replace them, you should remember these signs.

1. Darkening appears on the windshield. Here you should pay significant attention to the degree of cleanliness of the glass, which directly affects driving safety. If such a factor (darkening) occurs, then further movement is prohibited. The cause of the darkening may be a low-quality detergent. Another factor causing this phenomenon may be the deformation of the rubber band, causing the angle of the edge on the wiper to shift.
2. The presence of large stains of dirt on the surface of the glass. This may be caused by the icing effect of the brushes themselves or wear of the working area, which leads to a decrease in efficiency. Perhaps the fact is that the size of the wipers is not suitable.
3. The effect of “jumping” of the blades, which occurs due to an increase in the lifting force of the windshield wipers. An increase in the speed of movement of the windshield wiper blade inevitably leads to the fact that it simply “jumps” over areas on the windshield.
4. The presence of narrow stripes on the surface of the glass caused by the operation of the wipers. Among the reasons you can find dirt stuck to the wiper or excessive wear of the working edge.

Alternative sizes

It is clear that they are trying to increase the size of the brushes, not decrease them. Let's look at what happens as a result:

• 60 x 40 is the most common option;
• 65 x 40 is a good alternative. The “triangle” at the bottom between the brushes will be reduced to the limit;
• 60 x 45 – use this option only if you are installing frameless frames;

Probably, the reader managed to understand the main idea: the total length of the brushes should not exceed 105 cm. In the latter version, by the way, one “wiper” can come into contact with another. In practice, this does not happen, since the “left brush” is located above the “right”.

The most extreme combination used in reality is 65 x 43!

Alternative to factory brushes

As mentioned earlier, the size of the wipers on the Lada Granta, which just left the factory, is 4.1 cm and 6.0 cm. But they can be replaced with other brushes that have a slightly different size. Namely:

1. 6.0x4.0 cm is the most popular version of windshield wipers.
2. 6.5x4.0 cm is a fairly good option, due to which the triangle of dirt at the bottom of the windshield will be minimized.
3. 6.0x4.5 cm. This option should only be used if you are installing frameless brushes.
4. 6.5x42.5. By purchasing such brushes for your Lada Granta, you can completely get rid of the ill-fated triangle.

Thus, it becomes clear that the total length of both wipers should not exceed 105 cm. It should be noted that in the last, fourth version of the brushes they can come into contact with each other. However, in practice this does not happen, since the left brush is always above the right one.

Performing a replacement

First of all, you need to move the windshield wiper arm away from the glass. Then the actions correspond to the picture: we squeeze the latch, remove it from the hook, and dismantle it. The most difficult thing is to move the hook up (Fig. 2). You need to be able to avoid damaging the rubber band (brush).

Replacing windshield wiper blades yourself

You do not need any special tool for this operation. Everything is done literally by hand and without unnecessary fuss. All you need to do is buy new ones that fit your car. Please note that the right and left wipers are often not the same length.

The brush replacement procedure itself is performed in a few simple steps:

1. The windshield wiper arm is moved away from the windshield to a vertical position. Hold the lever carefully, otherwise it may hit the glass sharply and damage it. First step of replacement. The 'wiper' is installed perpendicular to the glass
2. Open the plastic cover of the brush holder. Hold the holder with one hand and pull the brush down. Remove the cap from the wiper
3. Take a new brush, put it on the holder and close the cap. Pull the brush upward. The wiper is installed. You can repeat the operation on another windshield wiper. Pull the blade down towards you and remove

Frame, frameless, combined

What a “frame wiper” is is clear to everyone: the design of the unit uses a metal frame. The role of the frame can be performed by a narrow strip made, for example, of plastic. And then the structure is called frameless (see figure). By the way, the plastic itself can differ in rigidity, and it is also sometimes reinforced.

Three types of wipers

Hybrid or combined designs use a frame and a plastic strip (bottom picture). In general, a hybrid differs little from a frame wiper: the height is reduced, other characteristics are the same. So, there is no need to delude yourself about the use of “hybrid wipers”.

If the frame brush does not clean one corner or another part of the surface, the same will happen with the “hybrid”.

Winter brushes

If tourmaline is added to rubber, such material will be good at removing oil films. And if the wiper frame is covered with a cover, this will protect the structure from ice. This means that, in general, winter brushes are frame brushes with a plastic cover.

“Winter wipers” can only be frame ones

And for some reason it is believed that it is necessary to clean glass from oil products in winter.

The disadvantages of winter windshield wipers are listed below:

• Availability of a frame (required);
• Increased weight of the structure;
• High price.

In theory, any winter brush is also suitable for summer. The main thing is not to use frameless brushes in winter, since they are not intended to fight ice.

The many faces of U-Hood

Some brushes compatible with the U-Hood (J-Hood) mount have a tricky lock: to loosen the mount, you need to bend the lever. This lever itself is difficult to notice right away (Fig. 1).

To tilt the lever at least to some angle, you must first squeeze two buttons (Fig. 2). So, the sequence: squeeze the buttons, tilt the lever.

Replacement options

It is not difficult to purchase high-quality brushes in the store - analogues. It is only necessary to note: it is worth choosing parts from well-proven brands. All presented modifications can be divided into categories:

• frame;
• frameless;
• hybrid;
• winter.

Frame

They are a classic design. An important advantage is low cost. The downside is the low contact ability at high speed. After 80 km/h the brushes practically stop cleaning. The reason is simple: the air flow lifts the cleaning surface above the glass. Which leads to poor contact. As a result: precipitation and dirt are not removed from the car.

Frameless

They are a good alternative to classic solutions. But it should be noted: they cost a little more. The brush itself is made from a single piece of rubber. This allows the air flow to easily flow around the structure. Therefore, even at a speed of 140-190 km/h, there are no problems with cleaning. But frameless brushes are characterized by low strength.

Hybrid

Hybrid ones do not have the disadvantages of frame and frameless brushes. But they have their advantages:

• good aerodynamics;
• stylish design;
• strength.

Like frameless ones, they are made from a single piece of rubber. But there is a metal structure inside. Making the brush more rigid. This allows you to worry about damage without worrying. These models are distinguished by their durability. Even with intensive use, they will survive 2-3 seasons.

A year ago I bought a Lada Granta car and immediately changed the wipers to frameless ones. In principle, they work fine, but for the winter, of course, I had to change them to winter ones, with a frame, because they can’t cope with ice. My windshield wiper blades are frameless. We walked normally until late autumn. I returned it to factory settings for the winter.

I use frameless cleaner brushes both in winter and summer; in the off-season, on the contrary, I liked them better than with a frame. Frame ones freeze at bending points.

Our winters have been very warm in recent years and therefore I easily use frameless wipers.

I always rode frame 60*45. The triangle, which is so annoying, with this standard size is minimal and there are no extraneous whistles.

If the buyer purchased components with a parameter that differs from the regulated value, then there is a risk of poor quality cleaning of the glass after installation. This is due to the varying degrees of down force created by the wiper, which depends on the size of the wiper blades. If there is a specimen with an overestimated length, then its clamping value will be greater, which will negatively affect the service life of LADA Granta glass. 3. Horse is a domestically produced windshield wiper for the Lada Granta, the size of which is 600 and 410 mm, which is completely suitable. There is one caveat: to install them on a car you will have to use an adapter for a hook.

What are wipers and when should they be changed?

Windshield wipers are a device in which a metal arm is connected to a rubber wiper surface. The wiper blade is secured to the lever with a special holder with a plastic plug. They come in two varieties: framed and frameless.

Frame brushes have moving parts called rocker arms. They hold the cleaning surface on the windshield. The fundamental disadvantage of such “wipers” is the presence of hinged joints, which are vulnerable to the ingress of snow and ice, which disables the wipers. In addition, the rubber brush often does not adhere tightly to the glass, which makes its work ineffective.

Wiper frame design

Frameless wipers have a spring instead of rocker arms, which presses the blade to the surface of the windshield. Such windshield wipers look more organic in appearance, clean the glass better and do not wear out so quickly. You can recognize them by the characteristic curve of their shape. Windshield wipers of this type are installed on most modern cars and have the following advantages:

• Can be used on glass of any curvature;
• They do not impair the aerodynamic properties of the body.

The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant volunteered to help us: it has a couple of stands for life testing of brushes - you can drive it for at least a year. But we limited the test period to four months: this roughly corresponds to a year’s mileage on a live car.

Each pair of windshield wipers was bought in triplicate - just like in Gaidaev’s comedy. The first - on the stand, the second - in the thermal chamber, the third - on the car for comparison: it was and is now.

Rules for caring for windshield wipers

In order for installed wipers to last as long as possible, they must be properly cared for:

1. Lubricate the guide pins regularly. Silicone compounds are suitable for this. If you miss the moment, rust will ruin even an installed expensive model.
2. Be sure to remove the cleaning element and wash it with soap and water. This is necessary due to severe environmental pollution in cities.
3. Trace the position of the leash against the glass - an ideal perpendicular position.
4. Never try to clear frozen glass with wipers. First, manually remove the ice or heat the surface before turning on the automatic brushes.
5. Choose the length of your wipers carefully. They should not come into contact with the gasket during the entire stroke.

Don't forget about seasonality and adaptation to certain models. Using summer wipers in winter will immediately damage them, and the lack of an adapter on the purchased model will not allow installation on a vehicle.

Important! Worn hinges increase the washer consumption several times and create a very unpleasant backlash. Therefore, windshield wipers are not changed according to regulations, but because they fail.

WHAT WE CHECKED

In the old days, a janitor was the name given to the owner of an inn; he had much more responsibilities than waving a broom. There are also many requirements for modern wipers, so we decided to check the following parameters:

ergonomics (packaging, labeling, design, appearance, fastening on a leash);

wear resistance on the stand (analogous to a year's mileage on a real car);

resistance to UV radiation (100 hours);

heat resistance (at +65 and -45 ° C);

quality of glass cleaning on a real car after laboratory tests.

HOW WERE THE RESULTS EVALUATED

Technical indicators were assessed by a group of experts on a 5-point scale; these assessments were recorded in the test report. Ratings for the price/quality ratio were also given on a 5-point scale: according to the principle “more is better.” The calculation method is simple: dividing the cost of each product by the number of points scored, the best attitude was given a score of 5 points, and the worst - 1 point. The rest received proportional intermediate grades. Thus, an “excellent” student could ideally receive 5 points for both technical results and optimal pricing policy. The same applies to the outsider, who in both cases was threatened with one.

Change brushes at least once a year!

The competition turned out to be democratic: long and short, America and Eurasia were represented. Prices range from 300 to 910 rubles per piece. We were pleased that we did not notice the overwhelming superiority of one design over the other. From an engineer’s point of view, everything is logical: advertising is advertising, but there is no need to lose your head. Frankly, only the overseas “Tights” couldn’t handle it: tearing off the tape is almost like hitting glass with a shovel. But the malfunction is not directly related to the type of design: a specific technology clearly failed.

It is curious that “Anko”, “Champion” and “Tights”, even being new, did not receive the maximum rating. Bench tests reduced the cleaning quality of all products, albeit to varying degrees. This reinforces the need for an annual “changing of the guard” on the windshield. Competitors are listed in alphabetical order. The best value for money is the German Heiner Hybrid; Denso, Valeo and Vin scored the maximum points. Our choice ultimately fell on the Korean “Denso”: low price, text in Russian, excellent scores and... And, whatever one may say, the most modern design. You can't escape fashion.

Hurray, there is detailed information in Russian! The packaging is convenient, fixing and tightening does not create any difficulties. “Runs” on the stand created minor stripes on the windshield along the length of the brush, and the temperature chamber slightly worsened the cleaning in the upper part, but no crushing or anything else occurred. The price is one of the lowest.

The complaint about the packaging is standard: where is the Russian language? Everything else is good. The set includes two adapters for mounting on pin-type levers. Fixation on the lever is understandable, although difficult. Staying on the stand resulted in small stripes under the middle and upper parts of the brush, and the climate chamber added a small stripe at the bottom. Ultraviolet light did not cause any harm. The price is the lowest.

The packaging is convenient, but there is no connection to car models (as well as the Russian text). There are small installation instructions. The fixation on the lever is convenient, but removal is difficult due to the non-standard mechanism (you do not need to press on the lever, but pull it). The initial fit was not perfect, and after the stand the picture was supplemented with two stripes - in the middle and upper parts. Not only that, but the rubber band came off! The brush withstood the climate well, but the effect of the UV lamp turned out to be detrimental: stripes appeared along the entire length. The price is average.

The information on the packaging is comprehensive, if you close your eyes to the absence of Cyrillic. Attaching and removing the leash is simple and straightforward. When the brushes move at any speed, there is no crushing effect. After the stand, small stripes are left on the glass along the entire width of the brush. The products did not react at all to climate control and ultraviolet radiation. The only thing I wasn't happy about was the high cost.

You immediately highlight detailed information in Russian indicating car models and installation locations. Convenient packaging, three adapters. Installing and removing the wiper is easy. Staying at the stand did not affect the initial abilities in any way: crushing and other negative things were not noticed. The ultraviolet “tanning” also did not cause any harm, and only the temperature effect slightly worsened the cleaning in the upper part. When checking the heat resistance, softening of the rubber tape was detected. The price is reasonable.
