It will not be a revelation to anyone that AvtoVAZ literally slept through the SUV boom. And one day they decided to somehow make up for this matter and in the summer of 2014 they presented to the general public the all-terrain all-terrain station wagon Lada Kalina Cross, built on the basis of Kalina 2. Design

Changes in the appearance of Kalina 2 are certainly important, but not as interesting as behavior on the road. And the behavior of the Cross version is equally decent both on asphalt and on country dirt roads, which is a merit of the modified suspension. Thanks to the gas-filled shock absorbers, the front wheel track increased by 4 mm, and the reinforced mounting of the rear point of the engine and steering rack, it was possible to improve handling and increase the information content of the “suspension-steering wheel-driver” connection. The suspension, improved together with colleagues in the alliance, led to an increase in ground clearance by 16 mm, and another 7 mm appeared after installing wheels with an increased radius - R15/185/55. They are soft enough for dirt tracks and moderately hard for asphalt.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

The station wagon is prepared well for Russian operating conditions, but not at all 5 points. It does not have all-wheel drive and is not expected to, there is no heated steering wheel, and you have to pay extra for the Era-Glonass panic button. But there is heating for the 1st row seats, side mirrors and windshield, a climate system, a spare tire on a 14-inch steel wheel, and most importantly, a competitive, almost 20-centimeter ground clearance. The trunk of the Kalina Cross is clearly not the leader in capacity in the class (355 liters), but its modest volume can easily be increased by almost 2 times by folding the rear seats.

In terms of reliability, Kalina Cross cannot be called an excellent performer. Firstly, because the “base” has one airbag - for the driver. You have to pay extra for an airbag for the front passenger, and there are no other “airbags” at all. Secondly, the rear passengers have only two headrests by default - the third is offered only for an additional fee. Well, thirdly, the only electronic assistants available are emergency braking assistance systems (BAS) and brake force distribution (EBD), and an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Luxury in the form of rear parking sensors and light/rain sensors is a privilege of the most expensive trim levels. Isofix fastenings for child car seats are, of course, a mandatory attribute in any design.

Multimedia

Do you want a modern touchscreen with a bunch of bells and whistles like compatibility with iPhones or voice control? There's no harm in dreaming! At least, this is what the simple central console of the Lada Kalina Cross claims, which does not have a display without physical buttons even for an extra charge. Here the main place is given to a modest radio with a miniature screen, an SD card slot, 4 speakers and a USB connector. Oh yes, there is also Bluetooth with Handsfree, and many thanks for that. But to be honest: seriously, thank you that at least it’s not a niche for a new radio or even a plug. You can expect everything from Lada center consoles.

Lada Kalina Cross Technical characteristics

The Kalina Cross engine range today consists of two 1.6-liter engines, preferring exclusively 95-octane gasoline. The 8-valve unit produces 87 hp. and 140 Nm, working in tandem with a cable 5-speed “mechanics”, and the 16-valve engine develops 106 hp. and 148 Nm, combined with both manual transmission and VAZ’s 5-speed AMT “robot”. According to the manufacturer, average fuel consumption, depending on the modification, ranges from 6.5 to 6.6 liters. per 100 km, but actual figures may vary. After Kalina 2 was raised, acquired a plastic body kit and received larger wheels, it could not help but lose in dynamics. To compensate for the weight, VAZ changed the gear ratio of the main pair in the 5-speed manual transmission: it was 3.7, and now it is 3.9. The higher the gear ratio, the higher the peak torque, all other things being equal, which means the faster the acceleration. The vehicle's top speed decreased slightly.

The raised cross-country hatchback Lada Xray, which AvtoVAZ dubbed a crossover for advertising purposes, is called by many the highest quality model of the domestic manufacturer, and there is indeed reason for this. Firstly, there is an abundance of high quality imported parts, and secondly, this car has decent ground clearance and a proprietary 1.8-liter engine.

Cars nowadays don't work on anything. There are even hydrogen ones that literally “live” on fuel cells. Water is, of course, good and incredibly environmentally friendly, but it is still painfully unpopular and expensive to implement. Is it compressed natural gas or, as it is also called, methane in a cylinder, like the new version of Lada Vesta CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)! A gas sedan is cheaper.

5- and 7-seater Lada Largus station wagons appeared on the Russian market in 2012, becoming a kind of continuation of the cheapest Renault Logan model, only under the auspices of a domestic manufacturer. As you might guess, the Logan-like Largus turned out to be the first Lada car built on the basis of the budget B0 platform, on the basis of which a number of Lada, Renault and Nissan models were designed.

If the image doesn’t bother you, you like the ground clearance, like a jeep, and in addition, you’ll admire the large capacity in the form of a 5/7-seater interior and a huge trunk, and “not expensive” - that’s all, we’ve arrived. Yes, not on anything, but on a raised Lada Largus with a talking Cross prefix and, of course, DNA from Renault Logan. This model, first presented to Russians in 2015, has no competitors.

Salon

There are no changes observed inside the car either. The new Lada Granta liftback 2022 model year is finished exclusively with simple materials such as fabrics and plastic. Some multimedia equipment is present here only in a rich package. Owners of the basic version will have to be content with only audio preparation, the quality of which also leaves much to be desired.

The center console here takes up a lot of space, although there are practically no parts to customize the car. A third of the entire area is allocated for deflectors. Below them is the main part, on which there can be either a radio tape recorder or a multimedia system monitor. Even lower is a massive panel with washers for adjusting the heater and air conditioning, if provided.

The tunnel, which is almost completely filled with various shapes and sizes of holes for storing things, is not impressive either. Those that have a round shape are unlikely to be suitable for installing glasses, since they are very shallow. In addition, here you can also find a gear shift knob, a massive parking brake handle and even an armrest, but only in the extended version.

Unfortunately, the seats installed here do not allow passengers to feel comfortable. They are small in size and quite rigid. Also, the seats are made only of simple fabric, which is not the most pleasant to the touch. The range of additional equipment is also small. The first row is equipped only with heating, headrests and mechanical seat adjustments in two directions. The rear sofa causes even greater panic, since it is very small and allows only two passengers to sit more or less comfortably. There are no options for them at all.

A nice feature here is the presence of a fairly spacious trunk. Its capacity is up to 440 liters, which is a lot for a liftback. If you remove the back of the rear sofa, another 760 liters of space will be freed up for things. As the test drive shows, this is quite enough for various long-distance trips.

Body changes

The new model cannot be called a full-fledged SUV, but it can cope with light off-road conditions. This is an inexpensive car convenient for the city and rural areas, which has the following features:

The appearance has not changed much in comparison with previous models. The only thing that catches your eye is the significantly increased ground clearance.
The chassis of the car was significantly modernized. The height was increased by 16 mm, and an additional 7 mm appeared due to the use of other rims. In general, the clearance has increased to 23 mm.
The suspension received different springs in the shock absorbers, which made the ride more pleasant and softer.
We used new tires, they are wider, which added 4 mm to the wheel, making the grip on the road better.
You should not expect changes in appearance. The exterior remained quite familiar and well recognizable. The manufacturer did not consider it necessary to change the radiator grille, optics, the shape of the bumpers or other little things that make up the individual appearance of the car.
The metal body received special plastic overlays, which are necessary not only to visually change the appearance of the model, but also to protect it from stones and minor damage, which results in chips on the paintwork, this is especially true when using the car in the forest.
There is also plastic on the wheel arches, it appeared on the rear doors and bumper. This plastic part runs across the entire body, making its shape special, creating its own style for the new model.
