Body design

The appearance of the Kalina 2 hatchback has not changed much. It was assembled from two cars: front fenders, hood - Grant, everything else - AvtoVAZ. The quality of the metal has not been improved much. The spar and front panel are from Granta, which, in theory, should have increased the rigidity of the body, but this did not happen.

The only technological solution in the Lada Kalina 2 is a huge hole with a large mesh in the front bumper. On the one hand, it cools the radiator well at high speed, but on the other hand, all the small stones that fly will fall into the radiator.

What's under the hood

We continue our review of the Lada Kalina, looking at what’s under the hood. In Lada Kalina 2, unlike, for example, the Toyota Corolla, there is full thermal insulation of the hood. Serious technical updates are unlikely to be expected. Among the small ones is the front Grant suspension.

The motor is Priorovsky with an updated connecting rod and piston group. Three engines are installed, one of which is VAZ 8-valve. The transmission is a five-speed manual with a number of changes. The main thing is to replace the drive with a four-speed automatic from Nissan, which is one of the most reliable in the world.

For the suspension, the front caster in the front struts was changed, and the angles for the rear ones were slightly changed. The stiffness was adjusted a little, the springs became stiffer. The car itself was raised a little. All this gives us the opportunity to drive at a higher speed than in foreign cars.

Design

The car looks very impressive. If you remove the brand emblem from the radiator grill, the Lada Kalina can really be confused with a foreign car. Especially in the Lime color. Although the platform that served as the basis for the car is entirely a Russian development. Body dimensions have remained virtually unchanged for more than 10 years. If we consider the Lada Kalina hatchback, its length is 385 cm, width – 170, height – 1500. In the station wagon body, the car has “gained weight” by 19 centimeters. In this case, the curb weight of the car is 1100 kilograms.

Those who prioritize a large trunk volume should pay attention to the station wagon. The hatchback is already a more youthful version. It looks very dynamic, especially on alloy wheels. But they only come as a complete set. The ground clearance of the car is 16 and 18 centimeters for the hatchback and station wagon, respectively. The short wheelbase makes it easy to maneuver in traffic and to park without any problems if there are no free spaces.

The design of the car turned out to be very modern. And although only the bumper, grille and headlights are among the changes, the updated Lada Kalina 2016 looks much more impressive than its predecessor. The optics deserve special attention. The headlights here are lensed, and in the bumper, in addition to fog lights, there are daytime running lights. They come already in the basic configuration. Arches and moldings can be in body color.

By the way, the arches have become more muscular compared to the previous Kalina. It would seem that 15 inches is enough for such a car (meaning the wheels). But even they look small on the 65 tire profile. This gives the future owner great potential for tuning. But there is also a “Sport” modification. There are already 16-inch cast, spoked wheels. They look very impressive.

Any car review begins with a description of the model's appearance. What features are hidden in the appearance of the Lada Kalina hatchback? When you first look at the photo of the Lada Kalina, you understand that the model turned out to be very interesting and unique. The automaker's designers decided to use new ideas and technologies that had not been seen before. First, let's look at the front of the car. This is where the headlights, made using LED technology, are located.

This kind of technology allows you to increase the radius and quality of the glow. Employees of the VAZ company recently began to introduce such an innovation. Before this, all cars had standard lamp headlights that did not differ in quality or range. As for the shape itself, the designers decided to use tapered rectangles with divided sections. This gives the car a sporty look and some aggressiveness. The radiator grille is relatively small in size.


It allows you to control the air supply and prevent overheating of the power unit in the summer. A small feature of the grille includes special materials that were used by VAZ employees in its production. This makes it possible to prevent corrosion and various types of cracking of the part. Just below is the front bumper, made of ordinary plastic using anti-corrosion material, which increases the service life of the energy-absorbing device.

On the sides of the bumper there are round-shaped fog lights. The company's engineers decided to introduce small LEDs into them, allowing them to move during fog and snowstorms. This technology is used by many automakers.

Safety

The serial Lada Kalina was modified not only in the technical part. A beautiful and dynamic car must meet all safety standards. So, AvtoVAZ engineers modified the car body by installing additional bars in the doors. This saves your chances in a side collision. The frame itself is made of stronger sheets of steel. They did not forget about active safety. Thus, already in the basic configuration, the car is equipped with a brake force distribution system and directional stability stabilization.

The latter was developed and implemented thanks to close cooperation with. Now the car has become more maneuverable and predictable to drive. And since the laws of the Russian Federation do not allow driving a car without DRLs, they are already included “in the database.” Belts with pretensioners are equipped with electronic sensors that will sound an alarm if the driver is not fastened and begins to drive. And the red light on the instrument panel will light up. There are also airbags here. There are two of them - front ones for the driver and front passenger. Unfortunately, there are no side ones even in the top version.

Handling and suspension

“Wooden” controls, sometimes incomprehensible reactions to the driver’s actions, poor maneuverability in corners – the old “Kalina” certainly cannot be called a racing car. In order not to hit, as they say, in the mud, AvtoVAZ employees had to teach the car to drive again. A short steering rack, electric power steering and increased rigidity of the mechanism made driving this car a completely acceptable experience.

  • Better handling is typical for a car with an automatic transmission, which, although 15 kg heavier, has stiffer shock absorbers included;
  • Cooperation with Renault is not in vain for specialists from Tolyatti, which has a positive effect on the quality of components and suspension in particular;

The Kalina got the suspension from Granta, so essentially it is a retuned suspension from the previous Kalina, only with newly tuned shock absorbers, stiffer springs and changed wheel alignment angles. And, I must say, the result is pleasing. The car behaves briskly, reacts well both on a straight line and with a lot of turns. In general, it’s true – almost a foreign car.

The interior, by the way, is pleasing, although it is made entirely of hard plastic. It does not creak, and there are fewer elements on the front panel and door trims, tastefully. The downside is the uninformative trunk opening button, which is “hidden under the light switching unit. Note - press a couple of times to be sure, this is our car!

The directional stability, as for a domestic product, is amazing. Potholes on corners won’t make you turn the steering wheel like crazy, and in front of potholes you don’t have to brake too much at all - it flies by with a bang! The only thing that causes a slight feeling of discomfort is the behavior of the VAZ on small bumps. But I think this vibration can be easily cured with soft tires.

Technical characteristics of a used Lada Kalina 2

Steering gear and chassis

The suspension of Kalina, as well as that of the Cross version, copes well with our roads. Frankly, there are no weak points in it. Provided you use high-quality consumables, you will have to remember about it no more than once every 70-80 thousand kilometers. Shock absorbers, ball joints and silent blocks have approximately the same service life. Suspension arms give up later - only after 150 thousand kilometers. Those who want to save money can find frankly cheap and not very high-quality Chinese spare parts, but their replacement interval will also be reduced. As a result, there will still be no significant savings, and you will have to spend more time visiting the service.

The weak point of the used Lada Kalina 2 is the rack and pinion steering mechanism. It can start knocking after 50 thousand kilometers. Most often, tightening the mechanism helps get rid of knocking. If not, then you will have to contact the experts to rebuild it. Fortunately, this procedure for Kalina is not very expensive.

Motor reliability

The base engine for the second generation Kalina is the 87-horsepower eight-valve VAZ-11186. This engine has low-end torque and revs well at high revs. So, despite not the highest power, it can be fully recommended for Kalina. The main thing to remember is that in this engine, when the timing belt breaks, the valves bend. The conclusion suggests itself - it’s not worth waiting until the factory-recommended mileage of 60 thousand, at which time the timing belt needs to be serviced. It is better to protect yourself and do this after the mileage exceeds 50 thousand kilometers.

In addition, owners should definitely monitor the condition of the rollers and water pump. If there is a backlash in the pump, then under no circumstances should you postpone visiting the service. Immediately after starting, the used Kalina 2 engine may make a characteristic clicking sound. Many owners are sure that these sounds are made by hydraulic compensators, but in fact this is a clear hint that the valves require adjustment. If nothing is done, then after 40-50 thousand kilometers the valves will burn out.

The second power unit available for Kalina with the same volume of 1.6 liters develops 98 horsepower. It doesn't make much sense to pay extra for this motor. In terms of dynamics, it is only slightly better than the 87-horsepower power unit. It's another matter if you are looking for a Kalina with an automatic transmission. In this case, there will be no alternative to the 16-valve 98-horsepower engine.

The most powerful Kalinovsky engine with a volume of 1.6 liters develops 106 horsepower. The motor turned out to be very flexible and is excellent even for the relatively heavy Cross version, but the problem with valves bent when the timing belt breaks is also typical for it. If we talk about the general disadvantages of VAZ engines, then they include an unreliable thermostat. Sometimes used engines start to misfire, which can be treated by replacing spark plugs and ignition modules.

Possible problems with electrical and gearbox

The weak point in the electrical system of a used Kalina 2 is the generator. On average, it lasts 3-4 years. Although there is hardly any need to be seriously upset about this. The cost of a new generator and its replacement is low. After a mileage of 75 thousand kilometers, the oxygen sensor will need to be replaced. From time to time you will have to clean the throttle valve, which will help avoid floating speed. If this does not help, you need to replace the idle speed and throttle sensors. Sensors for Kalina are inexpensive.

The most common transmission on Lada Kalina is a 5-speed manual. And if on cars of the first generation it often reminded of itself, then on the “second” Kalina the seriously redesigned mechanism is distinguished by quite high reliability. Thus, the clutch can last 100 thousand kilometers, and the gearbox itself will require repair only after a run of 200 thousand kilometers.

There are no complaints about the Jatco automatic transmission either. With proper operation, it will not remind you of itself before a run of 200-250 thousand kilometers. There is also no need to worry about possible repairs to the machine. Due to the simple design of the box, it will not be so expensive. And they will take it up in any service that deals with similar problems.

The third transmission option is a robotic gearbox, where the clutch automatically closes and opens using servos. And if the “robot” does not work the best on the Vesta model, then on the lighter Lada Kalina there are much fewer complaints about it. Due to the fact that the electronics handle the clutch extremely carefully, its service life on the robotic Kalina is often even higher than on cars with traditional “mechanics”.

For a poor buyer who counts every penny, a second-generation second-generation Lada Kalina can be an excellent car for every day. For the same money, of course, you can buy a Renault Logan, but other things being equal, it will be worse equipped and have a higher mileage. And in terms of reliability, foreign cars do not have a noticeable advantage. As it turned out, Lada Kalina 2 is far from those “semi-finished products” that were produced at AvtoVAZ not so long ago. So you can safely buy domestic “berries”.

“Kalina” looks miniature against the backdrop of “Priora”. However, in reality, the latter only wins in body length: if we compare sedans, then the Priora has this figure by 310 mm longer. But “Kalina” is 20 mm wider and 80 mm higher. True, it is not so easy to notice these differences while sitting inside the cars: the Kalina’s interior is only 36 mm wider and 55 mm higher than Prior’s.

Priora can also be purchased with a coupe body. This modification is produced in small batches, and therefore is extremely rare on the streets. This version is the most expensive: the price starts at 408,300 rubles. “Kalina” has something to answer - the “Sport” package, which is also produced in a limited edition, but is promoted at the highest level. “Sportswoman” is cheaper than “Priora” coupe: 368,100 rubles.

Driver's seat

The driver's seat is comfortable even compared to the Lada Priora. You can adjust it to suit you: the tilt of the chair changes, as well as the distance from the steering wheel. There is a lot of space in the car, the driver does not touch anything with his hands while driving, but at the same time everything is at hand. The large mirrors and visibility are pleasing.

There is a lot of space in the rear passenger seat for a comfortable position even for an adult. Added headrests that were missing in the earlier version. Let's check the driving performance of the car in the city and on the highway.

Noise and vibration

The first thing I would like to note is the absence of rear fender liners! Forgot to put it? No - we're saving money, gentlemen. Because of this “modification”, every pebble or grain of sand is clearly audible when they hit the wheel arches of your car - what a pleasure. Otherwise, the noise was actually reduced slightly. Thanks to the new sound insulation on the front panel, the engine is not so clearly audible. The material on the floor is well selected, which significantly affects the comfort of your trip.

All technological holes are closed with plugs, which makes the resonance less noticeable. The B-pillars, rear pillars and the space in front of the windshield frame are now filled with polyurethane, making street sounds less active in filling the interior of the Lada Kalina 2.

  • Compared to the previous version, the new Lada has virtually no unnecessary squeaks and noises, although the owners will tell you how this will manifest itself in operation.
  • A lover of foreign cars will most likely be bothered by the distinct “clack” of the relay unit, which is located under the front panel.
  • The shaking, we note, has become incomparably less. The poorly placed power unit mounts in the previous model caused strong vibrations on the controls, so here the engineers went out of their way to fix this impressive defect. The new brackets had an effect, but it was still not possible to achieve the ideal.

  • The trunk in the new model has become larger by 10 liters (260 for the hatchback and 360 for the station wagon), although this is not a plus at all. Now the flimsy plastic of the corners has given way to powerful supports;
  • The lid now has an electric lock, and in the “top” it can be opened remotely with a button on the key;
  • The rear sofa folds either in parts or as a whole, but the main thing is not to forget to remove the headrests. The trick is to apply pressure to the back edge of the retainer, not the middle.

Equipment Standard

This is the basic version of the hatchback. It offers an on-board computer, child seat mounts, ABS, EBD, and electric power steering. There is no radio here - only audio preparation. The front windows are equipped with an electric drive. The side mirrors are manually adjustable. The wheels here are 14 inches, with decorative caps. There is a full-size spare wheel. There is no air conditioning. The gearbox is a five-speed manual only. You can buy a Lada Kalina 2016 in the Standard configuration for 386 thousand rubles.

Both cars have electric windows for all windows only in the “Lux” configuration.

"Norm"

The equipment is complemented by anti-lock braking and climate control systems, electric power steering and little things like a mirror in the passenger visor. The first two options are offered only for cars with a 1.4 liter engine (89 hp). This “Norma” will cost 322,900 rubles. Externally, “Kalina” in the “Norma” version differ from the “Standard” in that they have larger stamped wheels - 14 inches. This set of equipment looks more advantageous than that of a configuration one step lower, however, a few more items on the list of options would not hurt.

Exterior and interior

Well, who cares, but now I’m not ashamed of the appearance of a domestic car. The mirrors on the compact body make the car look a little lopsided, but otherwise there’s really nothing to complain about.

The appearance of a car is a purely individual matter, so everyone will make their own impression, and we are only talking about facts:

  • The ground clearance is large (170 mm under the engine boot), which is a lot even for some crossovers;
  • The door frames are not covered with black edging, which is rather a minus;
  • The towing eye, to please domestic car enthusiasts, is stationary here, which forced the designers to work hard to preserve this element;

Problems, but where would we be without them?

To test all the capabilities of this “berry”, we took it to a completely ordinary training ground, marking the track with several cones, highlighting a snake, a long turn and a short section to evaluate acceleration.

So, let's get going, and oh horror! After the first couple of cones on a long turn, the car’s steering wheel became dead and refused to turn anywhere - an indescribable feeling. Several cones die the death of the brave, and a light comes on on the panel indicating a malfunction of the electric booster (well, at least they reported it - thank you!) The steering wheel dies, although it rotates heavily, allowing you to get to the end of the track, where the company engineer immediately responds to the complaint, trying to convince that, they say , the steering wheel was turned all the way for too long. A few minutes of useless debate, and the problem is solved by hard-resetting the system. As soon as we turned off and restarted the engine, the malfunction disappeared and, most importantly, stopped reoccurring, no matter how hard we drove the test subject. We never found out what it was, but the designers assured us that they would figure it out and even issue a press release. Well, let's wait.

On the road

When driving with the air conditioning on, for some reason the relay clicks, but overall the sound insulation is good.

Kalina 2 hatchback with an automatic transmission no longer works with that same disgusting VAZ gearbox. When you release the pedal, the car moves off easily. Small engines have smooth acceleration, and Kalina retains the Priorov’s grip, as if you’re driving a Russian sports car.

Good visibility allows you to closely monitor the road, especially during traffic jams that often occur in cities.

The steering wheel has become more informative thanks to the electric power steering.

The brake pedal is pressed, you need to get used to it. It can be noted that the gas pedal is insensitive. We have no control over cable overlap.

When using the air conditioner, the car does not lose much dynamics compared to the Priora. There is some roll when turning.

If we sum up our test on public roads, we can say that for moving around the city and in traffic jams, the Lada Kalina 2 is a very comfortable car. If you need a new car with an automatic transmission, then this is a very good option.

Engine and gearbox

Did you wait? Yes, yes, now you don’t have to suffer with unreliable and unclear decimal “mechanics”. A gearbox with steel synchronizers on gears, an overhead gear shift mechanism and a cable drive is installed here. In general, the box is difficult to recognize!

  • You'll have to get used to the new switching pattern. The rear is no longer on the left, but opposite the fifth. By the way, ours thought of starting a blocking so as not to “stick” the non-existent sixth speed.
  • But the cup holder in front of the lever is clearly superfluous. Even a small 0.5 cola will interfere when engaging odd gears
  • However, the disadvantages are immediately forgotten when you start working with the unit. The driver will definitely thank the designers for the short, smooth ride and lack of effort. It turns out that you can enjoy our cars too. Included with this gearbox is a 1.6-liter engine - an 87-horsepower 8-valve engine, as in the Grant, or an engine with 16 valves for 106 “horses”

  • “Automatic” is inferior to “manual” in popularity, but the company’s research predicts a fifth of the market is for cars with two pedals;
  • The box can be “locked” so that it does not shift above first or second speed;
  • The service standard for a Jatco automatic is 10 years, but ours, as always, play it safe and give a much more modest guarantee - 3 years or 50 thousand mileage;
  • Interestingly, the position of the selector can be changed without squeezing the brake pedal, which is not entirely safe.

The second option, a more powerful motor, is not entirely clear at first glance. It clearly lacks “lower frequencies”, and for a non-professional it is almost impossible to feel the difference in acceleration dynamics. It is not yet clear what the future owner will pay more for, so the combination of the previous 98-horsepower engine with an automatic transmission may well be considered optimal.

Prices and competitors

Thus, after almost a decade of production, Lada Kalina cars are now on the market in 68 trim levels and three body styles. We can safely say that this is the first time that a Russian car is presented with such a wide selection. The Avto25.ru catalog contains about 550 cars of the berry family, in almost all of these incarnations. And it can be noted that the biggest offer is just the station wagon. The price ranges from 150,000 to 400,000 rubles.

The car is positioned on the market as an urban subcompact or, more simply, a B-class. Chinese cars, despite all their cheapness and “stuff”, are inferior to the competition in the market, primarily in terms of dynamics and reliability. However, there are many worthy competitors from other countries in this segment, among which there is really a lot to choose from: Chevrolet Aveo, Ford Fusion, Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Fabia, KIA Rio, Peugeot 307, Renault Logan, Opel Astra and Mazda3. The advantage of some of the listed cars is that they are positioned even in the C-class, which means they will not be “empty” and will offer even more than you can get with a domestic station wagon. The downside is that most of the foreign conquerors of Russian roads that are suitable competitors for Lada Kalina have already celebrated their 10th anniversary or covered 100-150 thousand km. But not everyone will be able to repair such cars. At the same time, AvtoVAZ products do not experience such difficulties.

Cost and assembly

“At the exit,” Kalina 2 cost 324,000 rubles, which is not much more than the old model. This is with more engine power and a much more interesting configuration. Power steering and driver airbag are available as standard. The “norm” includes remote trunk opening, ABS and central locking. The “luxury” assembly (just over 400 thousand) has a 98-horsepower engine, climate control, multimedia system, fog lights, heated mirrors and seats, in general, “Complete stuffing”! The maximum that can be ordered is a 106-horsepower engine or automatic transmission. By the way, you will have to pay an additional 7,000 rubles for the station wagon body.
