The leading domestic manufacturer does not intend to give up the most profitable segment of the automotive market - “crossovers” - without a fight, and is going to launch the Lada XRAY 2022, which will help consolidate the success achieved.
The most popular car in Russia should be reliable and inexpensive. These are the main components of the model’s success in the domestic market. Crossovers are not the cheapest cars per se, but in the top ten bestsellers, five positions belong to them.
Despite the different price category, the formula for success in Russia for crossovers remains the same - reliability and affordable price. So far, in this regard, the Lada XRAY, as a domestically produced model, enjoys a certain credibility, despite the shortage of spare parts that arose at the beginning of sales and their unexpectedly high cost.
In 2016, XRAY sales were just gaining momentum, but at the beginning of 2017, certain conclusions can already be drawn. So far, the model occupies 8th position, behind the Renault Duster and slightly ahead of the Chevrolet Niva. Overall not bad. If this continues, then we can say that the Lada XRAY has become a successful model.
It will be very difficult to fight Lada XRAY competitors. You need to clearly understand that its success will be brighter, the greater the price difference with competing models. At the beginning of 2022, Renault Duster costs about 639,000 rubles. while XRAY starts at a price of 520,000 rubles.
Is the difference noticeable? In numbers, yes, plus the basic equipment in the Lada XRAY will be richer. We won’t list all the options; power windows, passenger airbags and driver’s seat height adjustment are sufficient.
And yet, in the first four months of 2022, 12,430 Dusters and only 9,805 XRAYs were sold, moreover, the advantage over the Chevrolet Niva is only 279 cars. The Lada XRAY is clearly missing something to win this race convincingly.
Distinctive properties
Upon first inspection, the external differences from the regular X-Ray model are striking - plastic protection, which is implemented around the perimeter of the body, as well as increased ground clearance. However, in reality there are many more changes, and many of them are hidden from view.

- increased ground clearance - in the new model it is 215 mm;
- protective unpainted plastic body kit - installed around the perimeter in the lower part of the body, covering the front bumper, wheel edges, door bottom, rear bumper, sills;
- 17-inch alloy wheels.
On the technical side, the manufacturer has also implemented many changes. Among them, the following points are worth noting:
- in the new model, engineers combined two platforms at once - their own, on which the Vesta family was produced, as well as the French B0, as a result of which many additions and changes appeared;
- the front suspension acquired L-shaped arms;
- car handling has improved;
- electric power steering appeared;
- disc rear brake system;
- Operating modes, of which there are five in total, can be changed using a washer-shaped control device.
The designers did not ignore the interior design, presenting the Lada X-Ray model with the Cross prefix with a modernized interior, namely:
- The front seats received a number of changes, in particular they acquired three-stage heating and a convenient control system;
- the updated model received a multifunctional steering wheel with the ability to adjust it in height and reach;
- if necessary, you can fold the back of the passenger seat, which allows you to transport long objects;
- the rear seats are heated;
- In the new model, there is more space for rear seat passengers, which was achieved through changes in the design of the sofa.
Considering all the changes and innovations of the Lada X-Ray in the new body, we can safely say that this is not just an elevated model, but even a new vehicle. It implements quite a lot of changes and innovations.
Main competitors
The model in question has quite a lot of competitors, most of which are representatives of the Asian automobile industry. Representatives of the budget segment:

Some of the cars above will cost less, others are much more expensive. With an additional payment of only a few tens of thousands to the cost of the maximum configuration of the model in question, you can purchase a fairly popular Hyundai Creta or Opel Antara. All-wheel drive, to wait or not to wait?
We have analyzed various all-wheel drive options, but in terms of production volumes, the investment that would be required to modernize this vehicle is a very expensive undertaking. Therefore, to be honest, we are not yet considering all-wheel drive specifically for the Lada XRAY Cross.
Why is the steering column not stiff enough on the “evil” comb?
It should be noted that this car is still pre-production. Commercial production of the car began just a few days ago. And we know this problem. In fact, we have already eliminated it on those cars.
I was alarmed that the car was being rebuilt in two stages. At first it leaves the trajectory calmly, and then moves to a steeper arc. Why is that?
This is truly a feature of this car. <…> Yes, we observed such an effect, but on the other hand, some experts said that this does not cause irritation, this is a feature that you just need to get used to. And when you understand that it is capable of cornering like a driver, you can switch to active control mode. This helps the active steering to some extent.
Is it possible to buy shock absorbers and springs from Lada XRAY Cross and install them on a regular XRAY?
Basically no. Why? Because we did not limit ourselves to changing only the shock absorbers. In fact, we have changed the suspension design very seriously. Yes, we kept the subframe from the B0 platform, but we strengthened it using a cross member from the Duster. But at the same time, we changed the front struts themselves. Now we use Vesta fists. And we widened the track of the front and rear wheels. Simply taking and, for example, installing a new strut with springs assembly from an XRAY Cross car on an XRAY is impossible. Moreover, the suspension settings are tied to the power unit, which is why we offer only one power unit for now - this is a 1.8 with manual transmission, in the future there will also be an AMT.

But it’s only now that things have come to production versions of an off-road hatchback with high ground clearance. Most likely, the market success of the Lada Vesta Cross will determine the fate of the XRay Cross.
Avtovaz knows the recipe for creating off-road versions of ordinary cars. Moreover, you already have experience. Kalina Cross, Largus Cross and the latest new product Vesta Cross, which may turn out to be the most successful in this series. Cross does not require major modifications. Master the production of plastic linings, install larger wheels and reconfigure the suspension for increased ground clearance. With XRay it will be even easier, you don’t even need to touch the suspension, the ground clearance there is already at a fairly off-road level.
The XRAY Cross exterior will receive original bumpers, protective plastic on the wheel arches, and protective moldings on the doors and sills. Perhaps the model will be equipped with alloy wheels of the original design. The plastic body kit, made of unpainted plastic, is designed to protect the enamel of the body on light off-road conditions. If you consider that we have light off-road conditions in the center of many cities, then there is no doubt about the success of the model’s appearance.
Technical properties, configurations and cost
The manufacturer presents a modified car with a 1.8-liter engine developing speeds of up to 122 hp, a 5-speed manual transmission, and front-wheel drive.
The updated Lada X-Ray Cross is presented in various versions. After the start of sales to consumers, the following configurations are available:
- Classic costing from RUB 729,900;
- Classic Optima - from RUB 766,900;
- Comfort - from RUB 809,900;
- Luxury - from RUB 859,900;
- Luxury Prestige - from RUB 888,900.
Since the raised car has received a lot of changes, its cost is slightly higher than the regular XRay version. A little later, the manufacturer promises to introduce a model with a robotic gearbox.
For now, the car is equipped only with front-wheel drive. It is not yet known whether an all-wheel drive option will appear. If you believe the rumors, not yet, although the manufacturer once expressed such an idea, but then abandoned it.

Apparently, the price of the all-terrain modification will be at the level of its French donor. The cost of the basic version of the XRay, whose sales started in February of this year, is about 600,000 rubles, which is, in principle, comparable to similar cars. As a comparison, we can cite the Renault Sandero, which is closest to it in spirit.
This car is currently offered in its basic version for 589,000 rubles, and a Renault Duster with a front-wheel drive system for 599,000 rubles. As a result, the price of a Lada XRay Cross with an all-wheel drive system, as in the same Duster, may well be 1,000,000 rubles.
LUX package
The Lux version, among other things, provides the following equipment:

- light and rain sensors;
- warming up the windshield;
- USB port for second row;
- eco-leather and fabric trim.
In the top PRESTIGE version, the manufacturer will receive a multimedia system, a long-range camera, rich tinting of the rear windows, LED interior lighting, navigation, and a rear view camera.
Lada XRAY in an updated body has quite rich equipment. However, the cost of the top version is relatively high and equal to the price of a foreign car, so the car has many competitors among models from foreign manufacturers.

The domestic manufacturer, despite the difficult economic situation of the country, sets itself a serious goal - to become the best car manufacturer in Russia. This is exactly what can be seen in the company’s development strategy. Also, domestic nonsense guarantees that in the near future the Lada level will be raised by 20 percent, and exports will increase to 50 percent.
To implement its plans, AvtoVAZ decided to change itself and revise the entire model line, updating all successful models and supplementing it with fresh, modern options.
Regarding the appearance, we can say that all new items will be modeled after the XRay concept.
Thus, the company plans to update the Lada Granta (sedan) model in 2016. Immediately after this, restyling will occur with the hatchback of this model. The modernization will also affect the new generation Lada Kalina model, which will take place at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year. During the same period, improvements will occur to the Largus model.
Also, just recently, the president of AvtoVAZ announced the date for the presentation of the production model of the Lada Vesta Cross. The prototype of this car was liked by visitors to the SUV exhibition in Moscow. A pseudo-crossover in a single-wheel drive version will appear at the end of September this year.
“The goal that the president set for us is to develop two new products this year. The first is XRay Cross in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive and Lada Vesta Cross in 4x2 version. These two projects will be given maximum attention this year,” said the top manager of the enterprise.
Boo Anderson explained that these two projects are “revolutionary” across the company’s entire lineup. A little earlier, everyone knew the new car under the code name BM Hatch, and the all-wheel drive modification was called B-Cross.

In comparison with the XRAY, the Lada XRAY Cross, in addition to the increased ground clearance, has several significant technical differences, mainly a modified front suspension, an electric steering wheel, instead of an electro-hydraulic power steering, which allows you to adjust the steering column according to reach. The design of the new XRay Cross completely copies the concept shown a year earlier. This is a continuation of the development of X-graphics. You can distinguish the Cross model from the front by the bumper, which has a silver lip at the bottom; on the side – along the black plastic linings above the wheel arches; and at the rear, along the outward-facing dual exhaust pipes and a bumper completely made of black plastic. This black plastic “skirt” now encircles the entire perimeter of the car, from the level of the license plate at the rear, runs like moldings along the bottom of the doors on the side, and ends on the front bumper under the foglights.
The XRay Cross is equipped with new 17-inch wheels, which not only complete the X-design image, but also contribute to the impressive ground clearance.

The legroom for people sitting behind has increased by 25 mm, but due to changing the angle of the non-adjustable backrest to a more vertical one, which cannot but raise concerns for the comfort of passengers over long distances.
Platform, suspension, brakes
Lada Xray Cross 2022 is the result of mastering the Renault-Nissan B0 platform by Russian engineers. The position of the subframe has been changed, the running arm is now negative, and in place of the “Loganov” lower arms there are L-shaped arms, like Vesta’s. These modifications should reduce the level of vibrations on the steering wheel, correct slurred reaction (known features of the B0 chassis) and improve handling.

In the city the car consumes about 10 liters of gasoline. The 1.6 cc engine develops power up to 110 horsepower. The mechanical transmission is borrowed from Renault. The engine and transmission of the car are of Tolyatti origin. Ground clearance is 195 millimeters. High ground clearance allows you to easily overcome any city curbs. Due to the fact that the stabilization system transfers torque to the other wheel when one wheel slips, the vehicle has good maneuverability.
The luggage compartment has a capacity of 320 liters. However, with the rear seats folded down, its volume is 772 liters. Under the trunk there is a special recess for the spare wheel. On its side wall there is a niche covered with a plastic lid where the jack and wheel wrench are stored.

Due to the fact that the new Lada has regained its previous chain drive, there is no longer a need to frequently replace the timing belt. The Xray's closest relative with front-wheel drive is the Renault Sandero. The independent front suspension received MacPherson struts. The rear semi-independent is equipped with a torsion beam. Since the beginning of 2016, about ten thousand units of these Lada cars have already been sold. This sale significantly exceeds the result that experts predicted.
The Russians had not yet had time to test the new hatchback from Tolyatti - XRay, the sales of which began in mid-February, when information about a new modification of this model appeared on the Internet.
A little history. A real sensation was created in 2012 at the Moscow Motor Show, when the XRay Concept premiered. It set a new design style and served as the basis for this car in the subsequent development of the company. The public received the following incredible emotions during the premiere of the XRay Concept2 in Moscow in 2014, which became even more similar to the production version of the model.
After this, dealers finally presented the Lada XRay crossover hatchback in August last year. The manufacturer stated that about 1,000 models will be created by the end of 2015, and 50,000 units in 2016. And already in December last year, as promised by the company, a brand new car went on the production line. “A tall model in a hatchback body, belonging to the B-class, created in an SUV style” - this is exactly how AvtoVAZ positions this new product.
I would like to remind you that in its design, the Lada XRay car has much in common with the Renault Sandero Stepway car, which is very familiar to Russian consumers. But if this French manufacturer produces only models with a front-wheel drive system, then the domestic development should eventually acquire all-wheel drive, representatives of the AvtoVAZ company have already said this more than once.
Most recently, the company’s press service also mentioned the date of appearance of the modification with the Lada XRay Cross all-wheel drive system. From their words, it became known that the new product will appear in the second half of next year. Apparently, this VAZ brainchild will be the first domestically produced serial full-fledged crossover, which will be offered in two variations: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

It is known that the all-terrain version of the model, like the standard version of the Lada XRay, will be stylistically designed on the appearance of the conceptual version XRay Concept2, but according to preliminary information, the platform from the car, including the entire chassis, will be taken as the technical basis for the Cross version, which is most likely will make the car longer compared to the concept.
It should be said that the standard XRay is based on the Renault Sandero.
The all-terrain XRay will differ from the initial version in increased ground clearance (although in the base it is quite large - 195 mm), the car will receive a new protective body kit on the front area. The new product will also get a new bumper, original lining on the massive black wheel arches and on the door sills. The car will stand out due to the presence of a modified roof rail.
The plastic sill protection is made in an unusual style - it increases in width towards the rear area of the body. The rear optics will be completely different. It has a more complex appearance compared to the rear optics of a regular XRay.
There is information that in addition to increased ground clearance, the wheels will also increase. They will remain sixteen-inch, but the tire profile will be slightly larger.
Interior
The interior trim is made using inexpensive, but fairly high-quality and durable materials. The interior of the Lada X-Ray Cross 2022 is implemented in contrasting colors, with light predominant on the dashboard, the sides of the seats and on the plastic door trim.
- The design of the steering wheel, supplemented with activation buttons for on-board systems, provides a free view of the dial indicators of the instrument panel.
- In the center of the oval cutout of the console there is a media information display with push-button settings. And in the lower part you can see the controls for the air conditioning system.
- The tunnel is equipped with gear shift and handbrake levers, as well as a multi-mode selector washer for the chassis stabilizer. The steering column is adjustable not only for tilt, but also for reach.
- The front seats with elastic filling and moderately designated lateral support are equipped with a typical set of standard settings and three-stage heated seats. The top modifications provide heating for the rear three-seater sofa.
The new body provides rear-row passengers with more legroom. If it is necessary to transport large and long cargo, you can fold the back of the sofa and more than double the 361-liter volume of the luggage compartment.

The design of the new 2022 Lada X-Ray Cross matches the family style of AvtoVAZ with its signature X-shaped features. Stampings on the body, as well as the X-face, are characteristic features of the company. But at the same time, it is obvious that the crossover from AvtoVAZ looks much more brutal than its brothers in the concern. The aggressiveness of the model is given by the original plastic linings on the body. The manufacturer placed them not only on the side sills, but also on the lower parts of the door panels and wheel arches.
The front and rear bumpers also have an original appearance. The manufacturer managed to achieve this by introducing silver inserts into the lower parts of these elements. In addition, on the rear bumper there is a special cutout for a bifurcated exhaust pipe. It is worth noting that most of the aft element is not painted in body color. This also adds brutality to the car. The chrome “LADA” inscription in the center of the trunk has already become traditional for the domestic automaker.
On the roof, in addition to the “shark” fin, which acts as an antenna for the radio, there are also silver roof rails, but nothing can be said for sure about their functionality. But this does not apply to other elements of the car body. Among them we can, of course, highlight additional lighting devices. These include front and rear fog lights, as well as turn signal repeaters built into the side mirror housings.
In the cabin, all the plastic feels hard to the touch, along with the dashboard, which is not the most convenient in terms of stability. This is exactly what the owners of the Lada XRay Cross attribute to the disadvantages of the Russian crossover. But otherwise, all the elements fit harmoniously into the interior and complement each other perfectly. In advanced trim levels, the car interior has two-tone combined upholstery. The center console houses a small touchscreen display of the multimedia system, under which is located the climate control unit. Also in advanced trim levels, the car’s steering wheel has the ability to control the audio system, leather braiding and electric heating. Another significant disadvantage that the Lada XRay Cross has, according to its owners, is the rather small space in the back row of seats. Otherwise, the budget model is fully consistent with the price segment in which it is located.

The test drive made it possible to clarify the fuel consumption of both engines in mixed modes in the amount of 7.2 and 8.0 liters per 100 km. The acceleration dynamics are 11.7 and 10.4 seconds, respectively.
