The vehicle is equipped with a three-phase alternating current generator with electromagnetic excitation, a diode rectifier unit and with a built-in voltage regulator, model 9402.3701 or similar. The maximum current is 80 or 90 A. The generator is driven by a poly V-belt from the crankshaft pulley. A generator is an electrical machine that converts the mechanical energy produced by the engine into electrical energy. When the rotor rotates, an alternating current is generated in the three stator windings of the generator, to convert it into direct current, a rectifier unit based on semiconductor diodes is built into the generator. The voltage generated by the generator depends on the rotor speed and the strength of the excitation current flowing through the rotor winding (excitation winding).

To regulate the current in the excitation winding, an automatic voltage regulator is built into the generator. It maintains a constant voltage in the vehicle's on-board electrical network within 13.2-14.7 V, regardless of engine crankshaft speed. With the simultaneous operation of powerful electricity consumers and low crankshaft rotation speed (idling), the voltage in the vehicle’s on-board network may be below the specified limit. At the same time, the battery stops charging, and if current consumption is high, it even begins to discharge. Below are recommendations for different models of domestically produced cars.

VAZ - 2106

G-222 is a more powerful and stable self-generator compared to the standard G-221. It has a built-in battery charging relay and increased output (50 A versus 42 A), suitable for the “six”, provided that brushes from the G-221 are used or the connection diagram is changed.

VAZ - 2107

How does he work

On the very first VAZ 2106, contact regulators were installed. It is almost impossible to see such a device today, since it is hopelessly outdated, and it has been replaced by an electronic regulator. So, the main element of such a regulator is a winding of brass wire (about 1200 turns) with a copper core inside. The resistance of this winding is constant and is 16 Ohms. There is also a system of resistors, the connection method of which can change depending on the required voltage. The highest resistance these resistors can provide is 75 ohms. This entire system is housed in a rectangular PCB body with contact pads for connecting wiring brought out.

Operating principle of the relay regulator

When the driver starts the VAZ 2106 engine, not only the crankshaft in the engine begins to rotate, but also the rotor in the generator. If the rotation speed of the rotor and crankshaft does not exceed 2 thousand revolutions per minute, then the voltage at the generator outputs does not exceed 13 volts. The regulator does not turn on at this voltage, and the current goes directly to the excitation winding. But if the speed of rotation of the crankshaft and rotor increases, the regulator automatically turns on.

The core located in it is pulled inward, after which the contacts on some internal resistors are opened, and the contacts are closed on others. For example, when the engine is running at low speeds, only one resistor is used in the regulator. When the engine reaches maximum speed, three resistors are turned on, and the voltage on the excitation winding drops sharply.

What factors should you consider when purchasing a new generator?

When choosing a generator for VAZ cars, it is necessary, first of all, to calculate the total power of all energy-consuming devices and devices in the on-board electrical network. The power of the power source must exceed this total value by 20%.

The type of engine must be taken into account when choosing a generator model. A generator paired with a gasoline engine can be compact and more economical. A diesel generator should be larger and more expensive.

The choice of generator also depends on the technology of combustion of the fuel-air mixture in engines of various types:

  • In gasoline engines, fuel is supplied using a carburetor or injector. Here, the fuel-air mixture is sucked into the combustion chamber due to the vacuum created. There it is compressed and ignited by a spark from the spark plug. In this case, the supply of mixture to the combustion chamber is not regulated (does not depend on engine speed).
  • Diesel engines use only an injector. Here the combustible mixture is injected into the combustion chambers under pressure and enters through the nozzles. Their opening is regulated by an electronic device (controller) with many sensors that respond to the speed of the vehicle, the voltage in the on-board electrical network and other indicators. Such engines consume less fuel, but are more energy-intensive due to the presence of auxiliary electronic devices. A car with such an engine requires a more powerful generator.

Dismantling and repair

After you have succeeded in removing the device, you need to perform an inspection and find defective parts. It is better to carry out diagnostics at a service station in order to be sure which part needs to be removed and a new one installed. The work must be carried out in a garage with an inspection hole. Disassembly is performed as follows:

  1. The negative terminal must be disconnected from the battery;
  2. The next step is to remove the power plant mudguard. After this, access to the generator excitation wires will appear - they must be removed;
  3. Using a 10mm wrench, you need to unscrew the nut that secures the wires to the positive drive. Now both wires can be removed;
  4. Next you need to remove the belt. Having opened access to the device, unscrew the adjusting bolt and then pull the unit out of the top bracket;
  5. Now you can remove the tension bar. While holding the device, unscrew the lower fastening nut and remove the bolt;
  6. Disassembly is complete - the unit can be removed.

After performing troubleshooting, you can understand whether the VAZ 2110 generator needs to be replaced or not. In some cases, it will be enough to replace a few worn parts. When disassembling, you should have a diagram at hand. If you have no experience working with electrical appliances, it is better to contact a service center.

If you have no idea how the generator unit works, and you have never encountered it before, then it is better not to risk it and give it to professionals for repair or replace it with a working device.

Dismantling

To remove from the car and then disassemble the generator on the VAZ 2110 and replace failed parts, you will need to perform a number of standard operations.

  1. It is advisable to carry out work in an inspection hole or overpass in order to gain access to the engine compartment from below.
  2. Remove the battery (without this it is impossible to get to one of the nuts holding the device).

Adjusting belt tension

Often one of the causes of generator malfunctions is the belt and its insufficient or excessive tension. You can easily check the optimal tension yourself by pressing on the belt installed on the pulleys. It should bend no more than 10 mm.

To adjust, simply loosen the generator on the bracket and move it towards the engine.

There is a special long bolt on the adjustment bar. By unscrewing or tightening it, you can change the belt tension. If the reason is not in this part, then you can move on to the brush assembly and the voltage regulating unit.

Brush repair and regulator replacement

In most cases, neither the brush assembly nor a device such as a voltage regulator is subject to repair. And not because it is difficult, but because it is impractical. It's easier to replace these parts with new ones. By purchasing assembled units, everyone can replace them themselves in a few minutes. But many motorists prefer to change the brushes themselves, especially since this is allowed and allows you to save some money.

The process of replacing a generator on a VAZ 2110 is simple. It consists of removing the battery from the machine and disassembling the back cover, after which you can remove the old worn brushes and install new ones in their place. The voltage regulator is even easier to change. It is enough to unscrew the two mounting screws and remove the unit, replacing it with a working one.

Relay repair

Often the cause of the malfunction lies not in the generator, but in problems with the relay. The most common reasons include the following, which lead to the need to replace it.

  1. The graphite brushes are worn out (the worn-out brushes cannot provide reliable contact, and the generator does not receive power).
  2. Breakdown in the electrical circuit (associated with an increase in voltage).
  3. Broken fasteners, broken wiring, etc.

The relay, by the nature of its malfunctions, occupies an honorable first place in problems associated with the generator. Many people, out of ignorance, look for the cause in the generator, although it is worth checking the relay and, if possible, quickly replacing it. To make sure of this, you need to hang one of the front wheels and start the engine, then turn on second or third speed. Next, you need to remove the terminal from the negative terminal of the battery. If the engine does not stall, the cause of the malfunction is in the relay.   • Mounting the generator on a VAZ 2110. There is an upper mounting bracket that uses 2 bolts. The lower mounting bracket most often has one bolt, but there may be two, in which case minor modifications may be necessary.   • In modern Katek generators, the voltage wire and brush holder are located together in a non-separable unit. Therefore, if the voltage regulator fails, the entire assembly must be replaced. Structurally, this regulator can have a hybrid device - when radio elements with electronic devices are in the same circuit.   • It is prohibited to check the vehicle's electrical wiring with a megger or a lamp powered by a voltage of more than 12 V. If such a check is necessary, you must first disconnect the wires from the generator.
  • The insulation resistance of the generator stator winding with increased voltage should be checked only on a stand and always with the terminals of the phase windings disconnected from the valves.
  • When electrically welding components and parts of the car body, you should disconnect the wires from all terminals of the generator and battery.

Generator type 94.3701 – alternating current, three-phase, with built-in rectifier unit and electronic voltage regulator, right rotation (drive side).

When is a generator replacement necessary?

How to remove and replace the generator - step-by-step instructions

Principle of operation

In order for the generator to supply current to the load, the field winding must be energized. This, in fact, happens when we turn on the ignition. Next, the crankshaft of a running engine causes the armature to rotate. At this time, electricity begins to be generated in the stator winding, which is sent to the on-board network.

In VAZ-2110 cars, the generator produces alternating current, and all consumers are designed for direct current. To convert it, a rectifying diode unit is used.

But that's not all. The fact is that the voltage produced by the generator constantly changes depending on the number of crankshaft revolutions. To stabilize it, a voltage regulator relay is used.

As a result, at the terminals of the device we have a constant electric current of stable voltage.

What's wrong with the belt

The VAZ-2110 generator belt serves as a drive for the rotor of the device. It transmits torque from the engine crankshaft to the armature pulley. The operation of the generator directly depends on its condition. An important point is belt tension. If it is loose, the pulley may slip. Because of this, the device will not be able to generate the current required parameters.

A sign of a loose belt is a characteristic “whistle”, which is more likely to occur in wet weather. The same symptoms indicate its wear and tear. Over-tensioning the belt distorts the rotor shaft. This contributes to accelerated wear of the device bearings.

The optimal belt tension is such that each of its fields in the middle between the pulleys can be shifted to the opposite side by a maximum of 15 mm.

Location, dismantling of the VAZ 2110 generator

The unit is located under the hood at the bottom right, at a level below the right headlight, opposite the passenger seat. Dismantling work does not cause any particular difficulties. The device is planted deep in the engine compartment. It is more convenient to remove it downwards.

  3. Loosen the fastening, remove the negative terminal of the battery.
  4. Pull off the rubber protective cap, unscrew it with an M10 wrench, remove the nut and washer from terminal B+. An open-end wrench will do. A ratchet wrench or head will speed up and simplify the process. - Disconnect the wire with the connector.
  5. Unscrew and remove the alternator belt tension adjusting bolt.
  6. Reduce the belt tension and move the generator closer to the engine.

  8. Knock out the bottom bolt, remove the top one with the bar.
  9. Holding the generator with one hand, remove the belt from the pulley with the other, release it, and remove the device.
