Lada is trying to increase its share in the German market and is starting sales of the Vesta station wagon with an off-road design. All the details are in our test!

The Russian car brand Lada does not enjoy the best reputation in Germany: outdated technology, strange design... However, with the help of Vesta SW Cross, the Russians want to make a real breakthrough. In 2012, the Renault-Nissan concern received a controlling stake in the Russian enterprise and began updating its model line. The first visible result: in the summer of 2022, the modern Vesta sedan appeared on our market. And now the Vesta SW station wagon and its pseudo-off-road version SW Cross with increased ground clearance are coming onto the stage.

The plastic decor of Vesta SW Cross hints at off-road capabilities

Vesta is built on AvtoVAZ’s own platform, which includes a Russian-developed engine and transmission. Body length - 4.41 meters. Characteristic design details include the outline of the letter “X” on the front and sides. Overall, the Vesta station wagon looks really fresh.

Interior: simple materials, plenty of space

Modern design, modest materials - this is how you can characterize the interior of the Lada Vesta. According to impressions of the quality of finishing, the model is comparable to Dacia cars. The materials can be considered practical, high-quality and even quite pleasant to look at. Of course, there is no smell of high technology here - the interior is dominated by analogue dials and classic buttons.

There is plenty of space inside and the interior quality is on par with Dacia models.

The central tunnel with a small niche is slightly wobbly, and the seats are truly shapeless. Another drawback: the cup holders on the central tunnel are made so small that they cannot clearly hold even a small bottle.

There is enough space in the driver's seat; the steering column can be adjusted in height and reach. There is enough space in the back row even for a tall adult. However, the rear headrests lack a range of height adjustment, so tall passengers will have difficulty.

The luggage compartment accommodates 480 liters of luggage when loaded “under glass” (with the seats folded - at least 825 liters). Both raised floors, which can be removed separately, are also well thought out.

Equipment: good even “basically”

Unfortunately, the Lada has a rather poor set of safety systems: four airbags (like the Dacia Sandero), ABS, ESP and an emergency braking assistance system - that’s all, you can’t get more even for an additional payment. But the basic equipment already includes air conditioning, a multimedia system with Bluetooth support, cruise control, electrically adjustable mirrors, rain and light sensors, central locking, parking sensors, heated front seats and a cooled glove box.

Already in the basic version, the car is equipped with a multimedia system that supports Bluetooth connectivity.

The next highest-ranking “Standard” package adds 16-inch wheels, front and rear armrests and metallic paint. The “Comfort” version, which is one step higher, is also equipped with a rear view camera, a navigation system and lightly tinted windows. Finally, in the Luxury package you get a heated windshield, climate control, as well as USB connectors and a heated rear seat.

In SW Cross, the role of the minimum configuration is played by “Standard”, and with 17-inch wheels.

Engine and prices: from 12,990 euros

In Germany, Lada offers only one engine for all versions of the model - a 1.6-liter gasoline unit developing 106 hp. power and 148 Nm of torque. You can only choose a transmission: a 5-speed manual or, for an additional fee of 700 euros, a 5-speed robot (it is only available in the Luxury package). With both transmissions, the car can reach 180 km/h and fuel consumption is 6.5–6.9 liters. By the way, for 2900 euros you can install gas equipment on your car.


Buyers are offered a choice between a manual transmission and a “robot”

Prices for the basic Vesta SW station wagon start at 12,990 euros, but this car can only be obtained in the white “Glacier” color. The “Standard” version costs from 14,990 euros, the “Comfort” package – from 15,950 euros. Well, whoever wants to afford complete “luxury” should be prepared to shell out 16,250 euros.

As for the Vesta SW Cross, the “Standard” version is priced at 15,990 euros, the slightly better packaged “Comfort” is priced at 16,950 euros, and the full “Luxury” version is offered for 17,290 euros. In general, Cross in all trim levels is almost 1000 euros more expensive than a regular station wagon.

Lada provides a five-year warranty for both versions: three years of standard warranty and two years of additional warranty (does not apply to the basic version).

Conclusion

In the budget segment, Vesta SW and SW Cross are interesting alternatives to their classmates. The Lada models are supported by a truly attractive price and rich equipment. However, of course, there is no need to expect miracles.

Don't be fooled by the basic package: this car is offered in only one color and with a warranty of only three years. A decent Vesta station wagon will cost from 14,990 euros.

In any case, the new model has a good chance of success. Of course, if it gets rid of the negative image of the brand and an extensive network of dealers appears in the country.
