The model may be of interest not only for its affordable price, but also for its relatively good functionality; it has the necessary minimum of options that make the car comfortable for daily use on the highway and in the city. The car will also perform well on light off-road conditions, so it can become a faithful assistant for trips to the country. The station wagon is already known to the Russian buyer: the first car of this type appeared back in 2015, since then it has been significantly improved, turning from a concept into a production model. The station wagon is produced in Izhevsk, you can already buy it, since production began back in 2017.

Not only the appearance of the body will be attractive, many buyers will like the bright interior design in orange tones; it is planned to interest young people, since the car is made in a modern style, has convenient design elements, and an interesting design. The quality of the materials used has improved significantly, the front panel has changed shape and become more functional. Lada, as always, has many competitors, but in any case, the new product will be able to find its niche in the market and gain some popularity.

How will a cross-country bike differ from a station wagon?

The model will be produced in two different bodies – Lada Vesta SW Cross and a similar station wagon. They will differ mainly in the following:

  • If you compare a station wagon and a sedan, their dimensions will be almost the same, but the cross will be slightly longer and wider, and the wheelbase of the model will also expand.
  • The SUV will receive a plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body, which serves as protection against minor damage and scratches.
  • A standard car is lower than an off-road car, its ground clearance is similar to the height of a sedan.
  • The cross-version will receive more additional options, its equipment will be much wider than that of the station wagon.

I have never hidden that I don’t really like VAZ cars. And my beloved editor often had to cut out from my texts some epithets, metaphors and other literary references to the editorial Vesta, on which I had to travel more than one thousand kilometers. I forgot about it, but he probably remembers. Otherwise, why did he ask me to drive a Lada Vesta SW Cross?

I looked back to see...

One of the strongest features of any Vesta is the exterior. Outwardly, even I like Vesta. But the SW Cross version is practically a masterpiece. Note this point: I praise VAZ, but there is no sarcasm in my words. This rarely happens. But the station wagon really looks very decent.

In the parking lot next to Vesta there was another “shed”, the brand of which, unfortunately, I didn’t even remember. But I noticed that I compared a foreign car with a VAZ, and I liked the VAZ more. Unlike many faceless carriers of potatoes, bags of flour and tomato seedlings, this station wagon is quite harmonious. And even its cross-version looks like the designer was kissed in the eye by God. Everything is in its place here, all proportions are observed exactly. The machine, which is quite large in principle, does not look bulky, but rather solid.

It is especially worth noting that the ground clearance of the SW Cross is quite decent - 203 mm ( for the Hyundai Creta , for example, it is only 190 mm), but the Vesta does not seem like an SUV or even a crossover. This is the same case when it’s not scary to approach the curb, and the car doesn’t smell like a UAZ. In general, the car came out beautiful. I looked attentively and suddenly turned around... And still good!

I don’t like, however, that the trim on the arch on the left rear is crooked, but I hope this is the merit not of the factory, but of the specialists from the official dealer who installed the locker. Well, it happens.

Give me some fire!

The interior of the SW Cross is also different from what was in our editorial sedan. Firstly, it became brighter. Yes, that same sparkle that I lacked in the sedan has become abundant here. This is especially noticeable on the dashboard, which is greatly enlivened by bright orange lighting. The plastic inserts on the dashboard look cheap, like the bottom shelf of a supermarket instant noodle, but match well with the inserts in the seat upholstery. Carbon-look plastic inserts further diversify the interior and please the eye (and at the same time the soul).

The second thing that distinguishes the SW Cross interior is its full-fledged armrest. Albeit without adjustments, but well located and decent looking. It's laughable, but for the owner of this particular car, a normal armrest was one of the factors that forced him to choose a “raised” station wagon rather than a sedan, although nowadays you have to stand in line for the SW Cross, and “ordinary” Vestas are available from dealers in available in almost any design.

We can’t help but mention the luggage compartment. Of course, the station wagon is designed to heap bags from Auchan, skis, suitcases, a ficus in a pot, two spare wheels, a canary in a cage and a diesel generator through the back door. And then all this rumbles there mixed with the chirping of a bird. But in SW Cross there is no need to fear this. If desired, you can put some things in a small compartment fenced with mesh or in an organizer. If you need to transport something large, you can remove the rear shelf. In general, if this is a “barn”, then it will have a convenient shelving and cabinets.

Well, if you’ve already started looking at the car from the outside, let’s open the hood. There is nothing new here, but pay attention to this detail. We scolded our Vesta for its constantly dirty engine: everything flew under the hood from the road at once. Everything is clean here, even though the weather is not at all conducive to this. Either the seal was changed, or the slightly higher height from the road had an effect, but so far the engine compartment looks new. And this is good.

SW Cross and Russian road

Let's now see how this nice car drives. But first, of course, let's get behind the wheel.

Sometimes sitting high helps a lot. And some people just like to sit higher. In this car you can really climb to a decent height, and most importantly, do not rest your head on the roof. There is enough space in the cabin, you can drive and play the button accordion. And this is also a plus.

The disadvantage begins as soon as you start to move away. Yes, here again these three damned Russian letters are to blame - AMT, aka automated mechanical transmission, aka “robot” in common parlance. You can probably get used to it too. Maybe he doesn't kick that hard. I even admit the thought of its durability. But even when I die, I will ask just two questions. One is about the meaning of life (but this is not certain), and the second is how such a box could be made.

Dimensions

The cross was not created from scratch, the base of the already existing Lada Vesta sedan was used, which is why the dimensions of the body of the new product are no different from the dimensions of the version familiar to motorists. However, the bumpers were replaced, so the car became 15 mm wider on the sides. The height has not changed at all, but the ground clearance has become higher: now it is 203 mm.

The main body parts repeat the usual style of the Lada Vesta, so the cars are generally similar. Despite the similarities, the cross also has its differences, as it is made in the off-road style traditional for crossovers:

  • The bumpers are more massive and have shiny linings that look like metal.
  • The perimeter of the body is protected by a plastic body kit; it also makes the car visually wider and heavier, although the material is actually light.
  • The roof of the car is sloping, which meets modern design requirements, which the domestic manufacturer has decided to keep up with.
  • There is an antenna on the roof; it is shaped like a fin and looks neat and stylish. The sporty appearance is complemented by a spoiler located on the roof.
  • The rear pillars also attract attention; they are partially painted black, narrowed, while the car windows are tinted, which visually creates the effect of the absence of pillars.
  • The car received large R17 alloy wheels and was complemented by an interesting exhaust pipe: it is quite large and has a square cross-section, which makes the sporty image completely complete.
  • The manufacturer has also expanded the color range: in addition to the usual tones for Vesta, Cross will also receive a new shade - “Mars”. This is an orange color that has great saturation, while the body kit will be black. In addition, another interesting color called “Carthage” will be available. The shade changes depending on the lighting, becoming darker or lighter.

Looking to the future

Today it is clear that the new Lada station wagon will be almost completely identical to the sedan, at least up to the B-pillar. This is in appearance. For clarity, you can compare photos of both cars. Body dimensions, all main components and configurations will remain the same. It is not entirely clear whether the Vesta Cross will be an all-wheel drive vehicle.

In January 2016, AvtoVAZ management abandoned all-wheel drive for the station wagon. This was due to financial considerations. However, in 2022, manufacturers expect to return to the 4X4 version.

Most likely, all-wheel drive will be borrowed from the French or Japanese, because the Alliance continues to be AvtoVAZ’s main partner. So far, Lada Vesta Cross is being called a front-wheel drive SUV.

As for the power units, the station wagon will probably be equipped with the usual Vesta 1.6 liter engines with a power of 107 and 114 hp. With. For all-wheel drive, a 1.8 liter engine with a power of 123 hp will be used. With. The transmission will also remain the same. The five-speed manual transmission fits quite well with the presented engines. By the fall, it will be known for sure whether the LADA Vesta CROSS will receive an automatic transmission, which is represented at AvtoVAZ by the AMT robot.

The characteristics of the car will remain the same if AvtoVAZ does not acquire a new power unit by the time of release.

As for the price, the prices for the station wagon will change in relation to the Vesta sedan. If now the basic Classic package starts from 514 thousand rubles, and the maximum Luxe Multimedia package reaches 658 thousand rubles, then the new station wagon in the fall will cost more, about 100 thousand rubles.

According to the latest data, the LADA Vesta CROSS station wagon will be assembled at the Izhevsk Automobile Plant. In particular, equipment for the production of plastic body kits has already been installed and tested there. The first parts require careful checking and adjustment.

The design style of the doors and seats immediately catches your eye. High-quality fabric is used, there are bright orange stripes on the chairs, there are inserts on the doors of the same color, they are made of plastic. The finishing is combined, but if you prefer calm tones, you can refuse this option, and they will prepare a car for you with a completely standard, discreet interior. In addition, a blue finish is offered. This interior looks no less original, but attracts less attention and does not distract the driver. Not only the inserts will be blue, but also the stitching on the seats.

Six months later, after the first show, the Lada Vesta Cross was again put on display. True, not at the international auto show, but in the exhibition pavilion of the Togliatti enterprise. The car has been transformed. The slope of the roof towards the rear of the car immediately catches your eye. This is exactly what the concept presented in 2012 had. Apparently, reviews from motorists about the appearance of the Lada X-Ray played a role. The Lada Vesta station wagon is completely close to a real crossover.

The combination of a 122-horsepower engine and a manual transmission is fire! There is always enough engine, although there are three passengers in the car besides me and some luggage. The gears successfully cling to each other - there are no problems either on the highway sections or in the plugged uphills at the exit from Sochi towards Solokhaul, where there is always a lot of traffic. The clutch does not require filigree footwork: you just release the pedal and go. Only occasionally did a slight itch irritate me, but this, as the engineers assured me, was a consequence of the fact that the engine calibration had not yet been completed.

The car will be offered in several trim levels, while Comfort and Luxury versions are available to the buyer. Cross Lux will have the following features:
